We were visiting friends in the area and they had highly recommended coming to this restaurant! There's rich history here and the ownership has been impactful for the area. Because it's the only restaurant as well, there's an expected wait for food. It is fun by a wonderful family, who would love your patience and patronage. Walking through the snow, we easily crossed the restaurant and asked for a table for 4. The young lady let us know that the wait would be 30-40 minutes for food since there is only one cook. We agreed and just decided to talk to pass the time. The interiors is decorated as pastel, Valentine's, Easter, Christmas vintage vibes in a little log cabin. The menu has an abundant array of Hispanic food, breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner options. I was ecstatic about having chili cheese fries and a taco salad! My fiancé chose a chicken sandwich with zucchini fries. Our friends ordered fish tacos and the steak with eggs. Our friends let us know ahead of time that everything on the menu is delicious. We have had dinner here a few times now on the way to the nearby scout camp. They are pretty much the only option around, along with a gas station and a general store. There is a diverse menu of sandwiches, salads and dinner options. The last time, went with the French Dip which was cook perfectly and served with Au Ju and horseradish. It comes with fries but you can sub out for another item. The beer selection is simple. Prices are very reasonable, given that they are a bit in the sticks. Highly recommend if you need a bite to eat when you are in the area. read more

We have drove past a few times going up or down the mountain and last weekend we decided to stop in for lunch. My husband got the huevos rancheros and I got the grill cheese and mozzarella sticks. He was VERY impressed by his food. He said it's the best he has ever eaten. I'm pretty sure he's talked about it multiple times since we have been back home. My grill cheese was perfectly toasted and the cheese blend was delicious. The sticks have a thick, crispy breading on the and are pretty thick. I was very happy with my choice. The waitress was hilarious, we felt very welcome and made us feel right at home. Inside you will find historical pictures of the restaurant and gas station through the many years it's been open. Don't sleep on this place. We will make sure to stop every time moving forward. Really great experience. Love the Oaks! As a local in AO this is our only restaurant in town but we are super lucky to have Monica & Joel to provide us with such delicious, fresh cooked meals. I took the scenic HWY 38 for first time in probably 30 years and stoped at the Oaks. The owners Monica and Joel are fantastic and the food matched. I had the Hardshell Tacos , 1- ground beef and 1- shredded beef on home made taco shells. The beans were homemade as was the rice and salsa . A perfect 10 in my book and I am a big time Mexican food lover. I will make a point from here on out to come up HWY 38 and leave the same just to eat here. read more

The new waitress (Hispanic gangster looking woman and staff) is very rude and have no manners on how they speak to customers. This waitress behaves as if she was in her hood. Passing through on our way to the Apple orchard and decided to get a little snack. We ordered the 3 Taco plate (I asked for fish) with a side of rice and beans and a slice of cherry pie. I was given 2 two shrimp tacos (whether they had fish or not, she didn't say). I looked at my receipt after opening up the box of food I ordered and realized she charged me $16 for "custom order" guessing that was for the 2 tacos and $6 for another "custom order" for the slice of cherry pie. After riding the motorcycle for hours to get to a nearby campground I too was exhausted to cook anything. I didn't find anything interesting at the general store next door so I entered The Oaks and sat at the counter. The waitress cheerfully brought me a much-needed ice tea while I examined the menu. The menu was full of standard diner fare at decent prices and there were quite a few items I wanted to try but I just didn't have the appetite. I finally ordered a pizza to go and admired the rustic mountain cabin decor while I waited. The locals seated nearby were friendly and the waitress kept my tea filled too. I got the pizza back to the campground and the smell finally got to me. I was surprised at how good it was. Honestly, I was expecting a frozen pie heated up, not the tasty treat covered in fresh ingredients that I ended up with. I savored each slice while I watched the sunset and cuddled by the campfire. Monica has the BEST fish tacos on the mountain and the refried beans are made fresh in the kitchen. While Mexican food is the specialty, the breakfasts are great too. Sometimes the service is sketchy and here's why: Hwy 38, beyond Angelus Oaks, to Big Bear is currently closed due to flash flood wash outs, which has made her business suffer. Sometimes it barely pays to stay open but her food remains fresh and delicious. With reduced traffic, it's not practical to retain full wait staff. It's my hope that folks will make The Oaks a destination place for great food to keep this gem of a restaurant in business until the highway reopens. And here's a bonus: there's one table on the porch where your well-mannered dog can join you to enjoy the beauty of the mountain atmosphere. read more

Rode up to the mountains today for breakfast but found establishment to be under new ownership and has a B rating. I was hungry but concerned about the B rating so figured fried zucchini should be safe, it's cooked at high temperature. The zucchini was obviously frozen because when I picked it up it was very limp the coating fell off and was dripping water and oil. My husband ordered French toast expecting the thick delicious toast we use to get, instead it was a thin soggy piece of French toast. Very disappointed read more

Not only is this the best restaurant in the area, it's the only restaurant in the area! All jokes aside, I had a wonderful dining experience here. My visit was for breakfast with 3 others on a Sunday morning. This restaurant is filled with charm and character. It was like going back in time. I loved the community feel. The little trinkets for sale were fun to look at. The restaurant has a huge parking lot that was empty when we arrived. Seating (all inside as there is no outdoor seating) was readily available. The menu had the typical breakfast options. We ordered a burrito, oatmeal and 2 other breakfast plates which I can't recall. Our food was presented quickly and was plated in a bland manner (strictly business... lol) and in good portion relative to price. The food was simple but tasty. Service was outstanding. My son enjoyed his fettuccine Alfredo although he wished the pasta portion was a bit more. They serve breakfast all day so I ordered a side of French toast. Ok. Hadn't been here in over two years as the last couple visits here were bad. Came on Friday 08-23-24 as it was a great morning for a drive and thought I'd try this place again. Super nice and very pretty waitress took my order and I have no complaints in regard to the service. The food however was pretty nasty. Got two tiny little eggs and a ham steak that was about the size of my IPhone Max that was so over cooked that it was literally a job to chew it. I'm not even sure it was real ham. As I was paying my over priced bill I noticed that this restaurant is now sporting a "B" rating so apparently they've got issues with something in the kitchen going on. Pretty damn sad. Absurd!!! Horrible!!! Very nice gal that worked there (owner??) let me use the restroom because I said I was going to buy a malt or a shake or just ice cream. They didn't have malts or shakes. She asked if I would like a sundae. Yes! Sounds great. I needed it to go because I wanted to sit in my car waiting to meet a craftsman. She brought me a styrofoam cup with OLD freeze/thaw/freeze/ thaw terrible ice cream with some caramel drizzle in the bottom and some kind of pink drizzle on top and a few little nuts on top!! No Chocolate, tasted HORRIBLE ....AND.... She charged me TEN DOLLARS!!!!! If she did not have the ability to make a nice ice cream something.....she could have just suggested I go to the convenience store Nextdoor for an ice cream bar!! Would have been MUCH better than getting ripped off for $10 for garbage! I am another person that will not go back to the Oaks Restaurant in Angeles Oaks. It used to be a great place many years ago. Went for breakfast on 7/13/24. Upon arrival the door said "closed for private event," so we tried the door and asked the hostess/waitress if they were open and, in fact, the sign was old and they were open for service. As the second customers inside, we seated ourselves and were provided with menus. We chose our meals fairly quickly as there aren't too many breakfast options. We ordered our meals (4) which took about 20 minutes to arrive. During this wait, we noticed a "B" rating posted near the door on the inside of the restaurant. Sadly, we joked that we'll end up with digestive issues after this dining adventure. LoL We could see our food sitting on the service shelf for about 5 minutes before it was dropped off to us; arriving cold and VERY unappealing. The home fries were lacking peppers & onions and were just cold fried cubes of potatoes; the eggs were cold too! Sourdough toast was actually white bread and also cold. The coffee was only warm and refills were hard to come by as the service was slow, friendly but slow. Note: a dead ant was also found floating in one of our water glasses. Upon finishing our meal, we were provided with our bill via clover mobile pay device. We had to decipher our bill, as each of the 4 meals ordered said "custom item" instead of a meal description. Lastly, within an hour after our meal, 2 of us found ourselves with digestive issues. Being inquisitive, we looked up the "B" rating through the County of San Bernardino Health Department and found that The Oaks file reflected scores of a 1 for finding rodent droppings, a dead rat on sticky tape in a food storage area, cleanliness issues, random food stored in odd places, and a crockpot with cheese sauce in the fridge. Overall, the food was edible but cold and VERY underwhelming. The coffee wasn't hot and the service was slow but friendly. Take warning if you see less than an "A" rating if you drop in to try this place. read more

What a gem! The food is good, the staff is attentive, and the mountain location makes it a great place to refuel after riding the Santa Ana River Trail. My favorites are the vegetable omelette, the fish tacos, and the fruit of the forest pie...with ice cream, of course. Oh, and their coffee is really good too. There's a bike rack out front where you can park if you ride up the old Mountain Home Creek Road (locally known as the John Elliott trail). New owner Monica makes this a perfect stop on your trip to or from Big Bear. Conveniently located right on the 38 in Angles Oaks. Monica greeted us ( in elf attire for the holidays). The ambiance is warm ( from a toasty pot belly stove in the muddle of the restaurant), welcoming and full of holiday spirit. Monica handled each of our four orders ( think Sally in Harry Met Sally) with a smile and an "I can do that". The hot cocoa was delish the omelet was huge, delicious and exactly what I wanted.
