It was a great day at Vancouver. The sun was able to peep through the dense cloud. The peak of the Grouse was visible from the downtown below. The ride to the peak was beautiful as the cable car ascends to the top. The beautiful sunset with reflection on the water was indescribable. The salmon chowder soup and beet salad was refreshing. The short ribs was soft and full of flavors. Disappointed with cod fish , it was dry and lack seasoning. The grand finale with hazelnut chocolate was worth it . I really want to love this place but I likely won't return at least for a very long time. I've now been 2 times in the last 3 months. On my most recent visit my party of 6 did the vegan tasting menu. 1 person in our group is vegan so we've tried several vegan tasting menus around the city. I understand that the chef rotates each month so future visits will be an entirely different menu and perhaps experience. The food was nothing special and very vegetable focused (no mushrooms or carbs). 3 months ago, my vegan friend raved about a soup she had on their menu and said it was worth returning for. This time there was no dish that anyone in our group would return for. Most of the dishes had a soft texture with a contrasting crunch but it was overly hard to the point you could hear the person sitting furthest from you at the table chew their food. The restaurant was not that quiet either as most if not all tables were full. I feel that some music could enhance the atmosphere of the place to make it more lively. The view from this restaurant is truly amazing even at night. Our waiter was great. He checked on us and asked us about the food. We came here for an anniversary dinner. While the weather did not cooperate for views the food more than made up for it. It's a fixed (2 or 3 course, your choice) menu. We did the 3 and got the shrimp and beets for course 1, gnocchi and halibut for course 2, and the tiramisu and tart for course 3. You also receive an amuse bouche. All the dishes were complex with unique flavors. We loved every bite. They also have a great cocktail and wine menu for pairing. Our server, Alfie, was amazing!!! Visiting grouse mountain is almost every summer activity but never dined at this beautiful little restaurant called observatory. The ambiance is not only beautiful but cozy & picturesque too. There are many food and beverage options but we tried the 3 course menu & I must say that it's worth the price. Every item was delectable and the service added cherry on top. A pretty sweet and lovely deal to visit the conservatory and grouse mountain with a 3 course meal. It's a tiny little space so any traffic feels like a lot of movement but lovely and classy nonetheless. First we started with a pre appetizer to get the taste buds going. And then we had the duck confi and tiger prawn for starter. As much as I like duck, I've decided duck confi isn't my preferred style of preparing duck. The tiger prawn on the other hand is cute with a Chinese twist (bok choy on the side) and is jumbo! The prawn is huge and bursting with flavour in your mouth - 10/10! Next, we got the angus beef and halibut for main. The angus beef is slice into lovely slices and cook to perfect doneness (medium rare) the sauce is tasty but the lentils and corn is a little chewy, not to my likely. Halibut on the other hand, the zucchini puff pastry on the bottom gave it a lovely touch. Lastly we finished off with the Tiramisu and peace jalapeños cheese cake. The reverse tiramisu is delicious, with popping flavours yet all mending together perfectly. The cheese cake on the other side, the jalapeños is a little too interesting for my liking. Lovely evening overall, window seats may be hard to get and really only the two tables at the tip would have a view least covered by the gondola anyways but regardless one of you will still get a lovely sunset given the size of the room. read more

Yes, it is expensive. Let's get that out of the way first. However, when you consider the cost includes the sky ride up to the restaurant, it really is much more reasonable--especially for the quality of the food. It is, ultimately, a special occasion level place in my mind. It was a cloudy night, so I can only imagine what the view is really like. But I can tell you that there is not a bad view in this small dining space. Almost all the tables have a direct window view. Even those not on the windows have a good view out over the mountain. Our server,Alfie, was excellent. He answered questions we had about the three courses and the drinks. He checked on us with each course and made sure we were satisfied with each course. The courses were each excellent and good quality gourmet dishes. From what I understand the items for each course do very overtime. So I'm not sure what you may get when you go. Five stars for the view (and exhilarating ride getting there) and three stars for the food. To get there you go through North Vancouver, past the Capilano Bridge and park at the base of Grouse mountain. From there you take the gondola to the 3700 foot summit for dinner at The Observatory. While the food is elaborate, it strikes me as one of those restaurants that is trying way too hard. Certainly the scallops were spectacular looking, but not a particularly tasty or easy to eat preparation! But it's been a while since I visited, and I should go back to see if things have changed--and for the view. read more

Food pairing on point! Alfi guided us through our meal. We had a '16 Shiraz from Argentina that was to die for. Menu to choose was 3 course. I started with tiger prawns with Asian veggies- double YUM! Second course was angus steak with a corn lentils tasty but I was told it would come medium rare seemed a bit more cooked then that- tasty none the less. Desert was top-notch tiramisu. This restaurant is more like an experience. With each reservation, you get to enjoy a beautiful gondola ride up to the majestic mountain and can spend some time up there prior to your dinner or even after. The service is exceptional, the waitstaff make sure to pay attention to every detail and cater to your every need. The portions and selection are a bit lacking but taste delicious nonetheless. I opted for the seared scallops which were perfectly translucent in the middle and paired with a crispy pork skin on top...yum. Whenever I see duck, I tend to go straight to it but the beef tenderloin sounded so good with that crispy potato fondant that I made my counterpart order that and we got to split our dishes. The duck was paired with a sweet fig sort of sauce. Finally the dessert which sounded a bit overwhelming but looked beautiful and tasted just as good. I went for the safe choice of the cranberry chocolate combo and it was delish. If you're not in desperate need of a sweet treat at the end of your meal then I'd opt for the 2 course over the 3 course. read more

Do not book this place. The table reservation is confusing. I booked a vegan menu when I didn't intend to. The reservation confirmation had this point at the very bottom of the email. They charged me $60 to do so. Then when I got there, and didn't want to proceed, charged each of us $25 just to get off the mountain. Our experience with them was terrible. We took the shuttle to the base of the gondola and arrived at 2:00. As recommended when we called for information, we made a dinner reservation for 5:00 which allowed us a free gondola ride to the top. What they didn't tell us was that the free gondola ride was not available until 4:00. That meant that unless we wanted to pay for the gondola (which is not cheap) we had to wait 2 hours at the bottom and there is nothing but a Starbucks there. Waiting 2 hours would have eliminated any opportunity to explore the area at the top. We decided to cancel the reservations. They kept our deposit even though their misinformation was the problem that led to the cancellation. So we paid $40 because they screwed up. If you want to do this adventure, be careful because they are happy to trick you into paying a deposit for nothing! read more

Presentation is good, but flavor lacking and unimpressive. Limited menu choices for supper. Liked choice of 2 or 3 course dinner - but considering the food quality, I would say definitely over priced and absolutely forgettable! Whether you are a "local" or a visitor to Vancouver, you are paying for the experience but certainly not the food. In future I would take the sky ride, have a drink, enjoy the view, and forget about dining. read more

Spectacular location. Food presentation is as picturesque as the view from the restaurant itself. The service is similarly exceptional. Considering the amount of effort/time it takes to go for a meal here, it is quite disappointing that you cannot choose where you'll be seated (-1 star). The whole point of this place is to sit at a window. We've been lucky enough to always get a good seat, but I feel bad for those that took all the time to come here, and didn't get a window. So, please let people choose their seats when they make the reservation. The meal was acceptable however to be honest I've had butter steak at the The Keg for a much more reasonable price. The bread was admittedly (by their staff) heated frozen bread, and when our entrees took over an hour to arrive, our request for extra bread was fulfilled however we found out they had actually charged us for a section portion of bread! I included photos of our dishes; the grilled octopus, butter poached chicken, AAA beef tenderloin and ling cod. Altogether you're more paying for the view than the quality of the food, which was good but not great. So it's been years since we have been up to Grouse. I guess I am going to be the first to review the fondue menu. Here we go: first course - cheese fondue with bread and fingerling potatoes. 4/5 stars could easily be 5/5 with more bread options and purple and gold potatoes. 2nd course. - 2/5 here is where they lost a full star for me. The meat we had Beef, Scallops and Shrimp. Quality was good but everything had no seasoning. Veggies Broccoli, Carrots, and Bok Choy. The main issue with this course is the seasoning of the meats. Now the next issue. The broth...... sigh when you have meat and veggies that are unseasoned your broth needs to be way more seasoned and be the star. Unfortunately this failed. I asked for salt and added a lot! The other problem is you are give BBQ sauce and Terryaki sauce to mix in or use on your food I think it was Sweet Baby Rays bbq. A lot of help would be something to really spice the broth get creative here. 3rd course - 5/5 chocolate fondue great waffles pineapple and marshmallows chocolate was good bitter just enough. Service - good and prompt elevated a bit other servers talked more about how to do the fondue. I mentioned the issues with the broth and they only charged us for a 2 course meal. Handled well and hopefully the feedback is made to the manager and chef. Over all nice experience we love Grouse. It was a good experience we weren't expecting a superb meal but some improvements could be made to make this great or a tailed experience food wise but the view and service saved a two star review. read more

Food is about 3.5 stars but service and views are 5 stars. Lots of other people were celebrating birthdays here while we were here. It's a nice place to come for that purpose or if you have guests in town. Dinner here includes your Skyride ticket so you don't have to do the Grind before your meal :) You're allowed up 3 hours prior to your reservation. Service was excellent and they even have a different set of thicker drinking glasses if you come with kids. Food was quite variable. I loved the pea soup, the bread basket and the chocolate pretzel tart for dessert. Fries with the truffle mayo and the falafel main were very good. Unfortunately my halibut was totally overlooked and the gnocchi was as well (too large, wrong texture - not pillowy). If you're a foodie and coming for food, this would be a pass. I'm wavering between 3 and 4 stars - it's 3 stars for the food and 4 stars for the experience. This is a great place to take people who are coming from out of town or to visit if you are a tourist yourself. Not only do you get an unbeatable view of the city, but you also get the free gondola ride up the mountain an hour before your reservation. As mentioned by other users, you don't get to choose where you sit but we arrived an hour before our reservation and talked to the hostess about getting a seat at a window, and since we asked early she was able to accommodate when we returned for our seating time. I wouldn't guarantee that this would always happen, but we had good luck. My biggest warning about this restaurant is that the food is only ok, so try to come on a day that is not cloudy so that you can enjoy the view, which is the top reason to be at this restaurant. At the beginning of dinner it was cloudy and we couldn't see anything. It was really disappointing and if the clouds hadn't cleared then the night would have been a wash for us! There really isn't very much to do on the mountain in the snow if you aren't dressed in winter gear or wanting to do snow sports. We thought we could go see the bears or walk around, but there was still a lot of snow (it's April) and we weren't dressed in winter gear so we were stuck in the main building with not much to do before dinner besides watch some promotional videos in the empty theatre. The menu is a little limited, but what we got was mostly good. We shared the Salad of Spring Greens & Vegetables and Burrata as a starter. The burrata was a bit difficult to split between 4 people - as other people mention, it really was a work of art. Both dishes tasted good. For mains we had the Halibut, Beef Tenderloin, and Poached Chicken. The beef tenderloin was the standout dish...better than the steakhouse we went to in Vancouver just a couple days earlier. The poached chicken was a little bland and seemed slightly undercooked. The halibut was the weakest dish of the night, as it smelled strongly of fish and the person who ate it was sick later that night...not sure if it wasn't cooked properly or if he just wasn't used to eating halibut as he'd never had it before. For dessert we had the chocolate cremeux, which was also good. We got tea as well, and one of the pots was not hot enough. This reminds me of my favorite ski place - Heavenly in Lake Tahoe, NV - only there isn't a great restaurant at Heavenly. Its situated to make the most of the surrounding area and treat to get a good table near a window. The food is good for the money. In San Francisco a tasting menu can cost so much more and you can get so much less. Yes the portions are not large but depending on what your looking for ask the server for advice and help in choosing something. Service - the people working here are good at what they do and they appear to enjoy thier jobs as well. Its a beautiful "office" to work at - not hard to understand why anybody would enjoy being here no matter what the situation - work or enjoying a meal. The best part of the dinner was probably the ride up the Skyride. It's included when you have a reservation at the restaurant. Arriving at around 8:30pm, it was nearing sunset and the view was absolutely gorgeous. Even though we had a reservation, we still had to wait for our table. The restaurant is small, with an excellent view of Vancouver. White table-clothed tables, candlelight, it's a perfect romantic setting. Their wine list is this super thick binder of all sorts of wine. I opted for a cocktail instead. I started off with a Pinenut & Salt Spring Island Goat Cheese Beignet with cracked pepper aioli, parsley and frisée salad. These were soft and flavourful, and the goat cheese added that extra deliciousness. Qualicum Bay Scallops- 3 medium sized seared scallops, on a bed of spinach purée, crab risotto, salmon roe. Scallops were ok; they weren't fully cooked. The crab risotto and salmon roe blended together well, and made the dish very tasty. The portion was very small though. Dessert was the Apple Financier, with lavender panna cotta, and ice wine poached apples. The panna cotta was smooth and fragrant in lavender. Ice wine poached apple was light and crisp, with that hint of apple freshness. The apple financier was also great, soft, and a bit of crunch on the outside, and a bit of almond flavour. Service was good throughout the night, the dinner ended pretty quickly though, as all portions were quite small. The ride back down was also beautiful. Something about the night scene of Vancouver..... This place is worth a visit for the experience more than the food. It's technically a good deal because it includes the skyride up the mountain, so for that special occasion or out of town visitors, try it out! read more

On your way driving up you just need to make a right into one of the free lots down by the Grouse Grind entrance, which is a little farther away than the paid lot right in front of the skyride. 2. You can get free skyride tickets, just make a reservation with the restaurant. At the beginning, our server brought us little complimentary cups of carrot soup to try. Tasty! I was very impressed by the amazingly soft and warm bread & butter they brought out as well. As others have said, the scallops are pretty amazing. Ours were done three ways, ceviche, pan-seared, and mousse. The pan-seared scallops had great flavour, and I really liked the ceviche as well, delicious fresh scallops! After our dessert, our server brought complimentary chocolate cups filled with hazelnut chocolate. From beginning to end, our experience was perfect. Usually from places like this I don't expect much from the food as they are mostly about the view, But I was proven wrong here. The upside... if you make dinner reservations, you don't have to pay for the tram up the mountain! That's about it, everything else was a bit of a disappointment. Restaurant opens at 5pm, we arrived a few minutes early, and they weren't ready to start seating. Another couple arrived shortly after us and was seated, so we went back up and were then brought to our table. The restaurant was empty (as now is not their peak season), but they sat us in the table adjacent to the other couple, with the tables almost on top of each other. This seemed rather unnecessary; over the course of our meal, two more tables were seated (so it wasn't like they were busy). Now, it had a spectacular view, so I get wanting to allow everyone that option; they could have taken a couple of tables out to give patrons a bit more elbow room. Our waitress was... odd, and moderately friendly at best. Food portions were slim. Taste was good tho! Price... did I mention you get a free tram ride if you make a dinner reservation? Considering the price of the gondola, the prices didn't bother me that much, but if that weren't the case, I'dve been pretty disappointed. Now, I imagine during the full swing of Summer & Winter, this place has higher appeal, we just came at their low season, when the staff just didn't seem as interested in their guests. read more

I don't think this is appropriate for such an expensive restaurant ($29 for the cheapest entree). (I've attached a few photos on this.) 2) The food The bread wasn't fresh - chewy, hard, and disgusting. (I attached a video.) The chicken was okay; the bacon made it quite salty. The drinks (Coke is $4!) are marked up extremely, as is everything else. I mean, the vending machine outside sold Coke for $2.50! I know that it's like this because of the view, but they'd have more customers if it were slightly cheaper. Overall, I don't recommend this restaurant. This was a really great experience for us. It's my 28th birthday and we wanted to do something really special, so we went up to Grouse Mt to eat. We were lucky to get a table right against the glass. The view was breathtaking. The ambiance was wonderful. The service was phenomenal, very professional and friendly. The food was beautiful, but I have to admit, most of it looked better than it tasted. The beet and blood orange tartar, pumpkin seed panecotta were incredibly balanced and had fresh light flavor, but my steak was admittedly a pretty chewy and uneven. My fiance's clam and cod dish was very enjoyable and very wonderfully cooked, but unfortunately there was 6 clam shells, yet only 2 or 3 bits of actual clam meat, so that was a bit disappointing. It really doesn't get any better than this place. Definitely one of the coolest experiences in Vancouver! The secret to coming up to Grouse Mountain is to set a reservation for the restaurant. The entrees are $39 per person and they give you a complementary ride up the mountain! Normally just for tickets up (they call it the "Alpine experience" is forty something CAD! But if you go eat at the restaurant you get an awesome meal AND the same Alpine Experience! Okay, so by now you can probably guess that I'm a food cart/fast food/bar food kind of girl. But man, this restaurant blew me out of the waters! I got the pork something and it was literally firework-amazeballs in my mouth. The pork belly pieces were super crunchy on the skin parts but so moist and delicious in meat parts (if that makes sense). It was incredible and left me very confused. In a good way. I've never eaten so slow and tried so hard to experience all the different flavors and textures in my mouth before. I feel like a grown up now. If you come visit Vancouver or live here and never have tried the Observatory, you are missing out. This is one of the places to try before you die kind of places. read more

I was a little sad because I had higher expectations for this restaurant. The set menu was $49 and this does not include the lift ticket up. The restaurant itself had a fantastic view, the tables were spaced far apart from each other so you don't feel squished and the decor was set in cabin style. The waiters were extremely attentive and friendly. However, the menu had a lot to be desired for. The set lunch menu allowed you to choose from a fonduta, fresh lentil soup, or rocket salad with iron steak. The appetizers looked great but I had higher taste expectations for the taste. The main menu was the goose, black cod, or pork chop. The food again was presented beautifully, and this time the goose and the black cod were yummmy. The dessert, however, was not up to par. The maple pumpkin, the cannoli and the roasted pear all tasted bland. I'd probably try this place out once, and that's it. read more

Very hard to find a better view than the one one gets dinning at The Observatory. And the food is just as good to match. I had such a wonderful experience here I would definitely go back. The wine list is very extensive, understandably offering a lot of options from vineyards in B.C. If you're not from the area it's a nice way to try something that you wouldn't normally get 'back home'. Our party tried several different bottles, and although unfortunately one bottle was corked, our server suggested a similar alternative and complimented that bottle on our bill. A welcome gesture as certainly it's not their fault if a bottle spoils unbeknownst to them. I would strongly suggest to make reservations, as it's virtually impossible to get a table without one. read more

Dine Out 2018 We had a great time - even during a zero-visibility snow storm! This is a great place to take out-of-town visitors. Good value since reservations at the restaurant includes a free gondola ride up and access to Grouse's mountain top activities (ice skating, theater in the sky). Observatory reservations also gets priority to the gondola access. We tried the tuna, beef cheeks and winter melon tart - all which were delicious and fair portions.
