This was such a yummy spot! We stopped in for lunch and were seated right away. We all got a different stir fry and each one was good!! The menu was perfect for a rainy day lunch. The inside was cozy and the environment was friendly. I can't wait to go back! I've been passing this place since I moved to Frederick 5 months ago, and haven't gone because I thought it was mostly sandwich/ salad fare, but there was so much more! I celebrated my birthday here with my family and had a great time. My mom and I have allergies to gluten, dairy, and soy, so it can sometimes be difficult for us to find food that isn't a salad! The menu here is very accessible to gluten free and vegan diners. Our server Jeff had the patience of a saint while we ordered, helping us to find something that was safe for our allergies. I had the curry and split pea soup (fantastic) and the coconut swordfish special with a curry flavor, rice, and cauliflower. The menu has a wide variety of flavors, as my mom had the creole stir fry with shrimp, granny had an Italian penne dish and my aunt had the Polynesian stir fry. I love this place. I'm gluten-free and dairy-free and I try to look for places with fairly healthy fare-- and I have lots of amazing options at the Orchard. Their menu goes all over the place, which at first was unnerving because in my experience restaurants who don't have a focus end up slacking in some area. However-- I'm delightfully blown away every time I eat here. They get it all right. Breakfast food, ethnic food, American food-- they do it ALL the right way. Highly recommend-- even for people who don't usually eat at "healthier" places. My only wish is that they have at least one GF and DF dessert. My boyfriend will eat the coconut cream pie regardless and deal with the stomach ache, but I'm usually not so dedicated. read more

The Orchard is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Frederick. I've never had a negative experience with food, service, or atmosphere, although the prices can add up quite quickly, especially if you order the large entrees. To save a bit of money, I usually go at lunch. I'm a vegetarian, so I've always appreciated the large number of vegetarian items on the menu. They also have great options for people who are gluten-free! A few recommendations: - The Veggie Salad is delicious and MASSIVE. I usually get it with the sesame vinagrette, and the included tofu bites (as well as the bread and hummus that come on the side) give it a little extra protein. - I've loved all of the stir fries that I've tried at The Orchard, but the Indonesian stir fry is especially wonderful. - The grilled avocado and brie sandwich is perfect for a light lunch in the middle of a busy day. - The restaurant gets their coffee (the "Orchard Blend") from a local coffee company, Dublin Roasters. It's very good! Extra tip: the fried tofu bites that come with the veggie salad and a few other dishes are excellent, and you can get an order to go for just a couple of dollars. Visited The Orchard (2nd time in 2 weeks) with my family, my parents, aunt & uncle - the whole gang. Had some great soups to start (Thai Chickpea) as well as the Hummus platter & Tempura Mushrooms (the garlic dipping sauce rocks on this one). Everything was unbelieveable fresh, well prepared & hot to the table. Happy peeps all around! For the meal, got the Chicken Reuben sandwich (note: this restaurant caters to vegans, but they do serve Chicken & Shrimp in their sandwiches & stir-frys) with the Tomato Tahini dressing - a little messy to eat, but overall really good & filling. Didn't order desert this time, but last week my wife & I got the Chocolate Peanut Butter Square, which came out looking like a piece of fudge....but when we cut into it, it was smooth like a mousse or filling, with fresh house made whipped cream on top, great way to end the meal! If you are looking for a consistent great meal without pretentiousness, just good food in a great little restaurant, try The Orchard next week. read more

I went to Orchard because of a review I read in Yelp, and the review was spot on! This is a fantastic restaurant. The casual yet classy arty contemporary feel really works and makes the dining experience special. Although packed, the noise was nothing more than a warm hum and you can easily enjoy the meal without having to raise you voice. The service was outstanding, friendly and welcoming. Even though our server was very busy, he took the time to answer my questions at length. The meal itself was superb. We had the shrimp asparagus appetizer, tomato bisque soup, and a house salad to start with, all of which was fresh and flavorful. My entree was blackened chicken over linguini with a curry sauce and my dining mate got salmon and shrimp over pasta with a peanut sauce. My entree was the only disappointment of the night as I felt although full of taste the portion was too big and the meal felt heavy. However the other entree was incredible. Dessert was wonderful and the coffee was hot and fresh. Yet the biggest highlight had to be the bread. Whole wheat honey that is baked fresh daily and was incredibly light and fluffy. It was amazing. A final comment goes to the outstanding service we received. We had to walk to a a show down the road and it was raining and we didn't have an umbrella. Our server went through the lost and found and came up with one for us. It was an incredibly kind gesture. I highly recommend The Orchard. Came here for lunch one day to try it out after seeing all of the positive reviews. I got the borscht soup to start, which was actually pretty good. As for the entree I got the veggie melt and my fiancé got the avocado and Brie. My veggie melt was not great, some veggies on a flatbread, however I will say the dipping sauce was actually quite tasty. My fiancés avocado and Brie was better, but nothing to get too excited about. Adding some flavor and seasoning to these sandwiches could have made a big difference. If I return I would try some other entrees besides the sandwiches. read more

We met our daughter and her husband here yesterday. It was quite good. Everyone was pleased with their dishes. As a former Frederick Countian, it brought back memories. Originally, The Orchard was located on Patrick Street where the Civil War Medicine Museum is now. I used to eat there for lunch quite often. This would have been in the early 1990s. My husband even remembered the tempura we usually got for an appetizer. They still have it--but we didn't get it. I think it's probably been 10 or 12 years since we ate here. This location is great. It's at the corner of Church and Market and for you long time Frederick residents, it's in the former Downtowner. My daughter doesn't remember the Downtowner. Well, it sure doesn't look like the Downtowner. It's modern and airy and clean. (I used to eat at the Downtowner too!) Two of us got stir fry and two got sandwiches. Everything was yum. My avocado and brie on homemade bread was excellent. They'll add shrimp to your stir fry for a small fee if you aren't vegetarian. My husband said his was good. Only suggestion for improvement would be the tea. It was unsweet and not that good. But then, I am a tea freak. Most people would probably be satisfied. Daughter and son-in-law treated. They are so sweet! Give it a try if you are in downtown Frederick. read more

In my opinion, this is the best "fancy" restaurant in downtown Frederick. It sure beats the heck out of that new crop of places like Acacia and the Tasting Room and all of that nonsense. I've always thought that the Orchard felt much more sophisticated than little old Frederick, but that was mostly back in the day, and now that Frederick fancies itself sophisticated, that may be less true. But it is still good. They always have good stir fries - you choose the style (Indian, Chinese, Thai, etc.) and what you want (meat, tofu, seafood). And the desserts are good. And the prices are reasonable. And you don't have to deal with all the trendy poseurs. read more

I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a few years and finally did yesterday with a dear friend. I was very pleased with the entire experience. We sat outside to enjoy the beautiful weather and people watching. The server was pleasant and attentive but not intrusive. We had the shrimp and asparagus appetizer which was delicious! The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the asparagus was fresh and al dente. The garlic cream sauce was to die for! Our entree was the zucchini Parmesan. It was a good sized portion in a light breading served with tomato spinach penne in a garlic sauce. I'm a garlic lover but this dish was a bit too heavy on it. Stopped in for lunch while spending the day in downtown Frederick and we were immediately seated upstairs at a quaint little table off in the corner. The service was prompt and courteous. The menu had a lot of options and we ended up ordering the tuna pita melt and the chicken pita melt. I loved the fresh micro greens served with the salad and a side of fruit. I don't give 5 stars very often unless everything, including service, is excellent. This was a pleasant experience on this Tuesday afternoon with two of my friends. We tried the special soup of gazpacho and found it extremely fresh tasting. We ordered the Chef Salad that came with a twist. A wonderful blend of avocado, freshly shredded cheese, and a chicken salad scoop. The balsamic vinegarette blended well with the greens and toppings. Bread on the side was soft and tasted like a nice artisan bread. We capped off our lunch with a warm strawberry cobbler that melted in our mouths. We decided to split it among the three of us, but I could've eaten an entire cobbler myself it was so good. The coffee, which is supplied to the restaurant by a local roaster, was nicely mellow and a nice complement to our dessert. Our waitress was responsive and attentive. We arrived at 8:30 and there was only one couple dining so I asked the waitstaff if it was too late to eat (I used to be a waitress so appreciated customers who were aware of closing times and cleanup). She assured us it was a fine time to sit down and order dinner. We were a table of four so ordered 4 beers. We then asked the waitress what appetizer we should order and she recommended the Pan Seared Moroccan Scallops with Flatbread. She said the pita (She was referring to the flatbread) was their own in-home made pita and was delicious. The flatbread was cold and "hard chewy", making it difficult to eat and the scallops were not whole scallops but bits of scallop and were also at room temperature and seemed to have been microwaved due to cold spots. We didn't want to return the app given the late hour we arrived and that it would have overlapped with our entrees. For dinner we all ordered Stir Fries and unfortunately, they were only warm, not hot and not very good. That being said, the interior is very cute and tasteful and our waitstaff was very nice it's just the food was not great. We will return because it might have just been an off night, maybe because we showed up so late. We will be back for another try because it was such a nice restaurant. read more

We were very excited to try this Resturant as our mother spoke highly of this restaurant. The food was excellent and the portions were a nice size. However it was at the end of the meal that left a distaste in our mouth. When we reviewed the bill it ended in .96 cents and there was a Rounding Fee of .4 The server explained that because they didn't have pennies the Resturant rounds up. This up charge was not explained to us prior to receiving the bill. As a consumer we were not pleased to have this unexpected charge. Even though it was only 4 cents as you multiply that over a course of day lunch/ dinner to a week, month & year that adds up. read more

went here for the first time on saturday and really liked the food. i had an iced herbal berry tea which was one of the best iced teas i've ever had. also had the chicken cobb salad with garlic ranch dressing. the dressing was amazing - i wish i would have asked if they had any for sale. DH had some type of shrimp stir fry and really liked it, although he felt it was a little skimpy to only have 4 pieces of medium sized shrimp on it. for the food i would give 4 stars. service was ok, but slightly pretentious. when my husband asked for coke, the waitress replied curtly "we don't have coke or pepsi products." ok - that's great, i get that they're going for the healthy vibe here. but how about you offer some alternatives? turns out they had "natural sodas" and this would have been a great time for her to offer that instead of snatching up the drink menu and flouncing back to the kitchen. for the service i would give 2 stars. all in all good food and prices, and "meh" service. when you balance the food vs the service i would rank it 3 stars. read more

We were en route from upstate NY to a destination way in the South, and had been driving all day, much of the drive through a rainstorm. We were very tired and famished, and decided to stop to eat in Frederick, a place neither of us had visited before. We were ready to sit and NOT drive for an hour or so, so our meal could be something other than the usual quickie travel food. We drove down Market St., saw there were lots of possible places to eat, and just parked the car and walked. We saw a couple of places that probably would have been OK, but somehow as tired as we were, we chose to look a bit farther and kept walking. Then we saw this amazing place. The Orchard was immediately attractive, for its name and appearance, so we took a look at the menu and said OH YES! We had the most wonderful experience. The ambience was warm, the fragrance was of baking bread and our waiter was very kind and quick. The warm basket of bread was so welcome, and our entrees were divine. I had the Hunan bean curd and my daughter had one of their vegetarian sandwiches. The portions were very generous and everything very fresh and delicious. There were so many things on the menu we could choose from (vegetarian) and I wish we lived nearer to Frederick, because we would definitely be repeat customers. The price was reasonable, but not cheap, as I would expect for such a nice place--which, by the way, does all their own baking! For dessert, we shared a piece of pie, which was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. It was an oasis of fine dining, in the desert of fast food, which is mostly what we ate during that trip. Thanks to Yelp, we found this great place in the middle of downtown Frederick. As others have noted, the wait was long for our party of four to be seated (on a first Saturday). Reservations would have been a good idea. Once we sat down, though, the food overcame any frustrations with the seating process. The zucchini parmigiana, with its tempura batter and creamy penne, was the perfect blend of flavors and textures. The Polynesian stir fry had great mix of vegetables and chicken with a flavorful ginger sauce. Others raved about the European stir fry. Desserts were also delicious - the peanut butter chocolate custard square was rich, but not heavy. The apple crunch seemed unusual at first (since you expect one thing, but the granola delivers a different texture), but grew on all of us as we shared. No one could get a bit of the cheesecake as my uncle devoured it too quickly. Lots of vegetarian options, healthy ingredients, a wide range of cuisines with choices to make everyone happy. Our server was very nice, quick, and responsive. We were tempted to give this place five stars, but wanted to reserve the right to go back and try more things before the final judgement. read more

My wife and I shared dinner here on a Saturday night. It was busy but the server checked in on us plenty, stopping to chat about our baby. We called ahead and were seated right away. We started with the scallops, they were awesome: tender, tasty, and quick to arrive. Then we ordered two stir fry dinners the Japanese with veggies and the curry with tofu. They were tasty, and both of us got generous servings. The Japanese was a touch salty, the curry was mild with a coconut base. We also got the blueberry cobbler...super good, enough to share, warm plenty of whole berries inside. Wonderful little find in downtown Frederick. We were reading menus outside establishments in search of lunch and ran across this gem. Sounded like they had clean, non-greasy yet tasty food. And indeed they did! The fruit plate was enough for 3 people, the tempura chicken was a large serving and outstanding. Honey mustard was fresh and crisp. The tuna melt was yummy with fresh tinaties, crispy small celery bits, homemade flat bread and wonderful cheese. All this and a low price plus exceptional service from the friendly staff. For those used to chains, be aware that the portion sizes here are smaller than many have become accustomed to, and the sandwiches don't come with chips or fries on the side. If you aren't satisfied with a meal out unless you have to loosen your belt afterwards, this may not be the place for you. The bread you get before your meal is very tasty and their salads (with house made dressings) are great! So fresh tasting. Appetizers are awesome. Try the vegetable tempura, or the spinach and cheese eggrolls. Entrees are very good, and usually large enough to share. Seafood primavera, salmon satay, sesame chicken, all good choices.
