We live 300 miles away from the restaurant but have family nearby; the Orient is a must have when we visit. Food runs the gamut from authentic Chinese cuisine to American style Chinese. The General Cho's chicken is awesome as is the beef and American broccoli. The shrimp egg foo young is amazing with lots of large shrimp. The wanton soup is a meal in itself, large full wontons! Mix it up with wonton in egg drop soup. The fried noodles and hot tea are on the table and are excellent. Service is a bit eclectic but excellent and super efficient, food comes very quickly and is served family style. The place is busy and can get loud, but no one cares because the food is delicious. read more

A wonderful Cantonese restaurant with white linen, excellent service and delicious food. We had the shrimp Egg Foo Young and Shrimp Chow fun. Portions were large and reasonably priced. The Brown sauce was perfect- flavorful and not too thin or too thick. The Egg Foo young pieces were light, airy, and enormous. To be clear: not a big fan of Chinese food especially American (no insult intended). This place ranges from canton specialities to General Tso American. Fresh crisp veggies and high quality meats covered in a well-balanced not-too-sweet-oily brown sauce that is at once familiar and better than the one you grew up on. (Btw they sell the sauce $2.50). Beef or chicken broccoli, egg rolls, lo mein (yadda yadda) all good, surprised by how good fish filet was though (again in brown sauce). Steak Kew was great. Last time got beef turnip stew. Gristly weird meat and heavy 5 spice flavor that I did not like. But...sometimes I feel I am not a good judge of this cuisine so I refrain from opining and just report here. Outside of White Bear and X'ian this is one of the few Chinese places that I keep coming back to. But, the service is really bad and the wait staff isn't that friendly. The longer: We walked in on a rainy Saturday and they seated us right away (thanks!). The space is huge, nothing overly special, and crowded. There are a lot of wait staff, too! The food here is just super fresh. Everything tastes like real meat or seafood, which isn't always the case at Chinese restaurant. We had wonton soup and pork fried dumplings to start. Both were great. My mom ordered pork spare ribs, and two of the ribs were really, really fatty- so she asked the waiter and he said "they're supposed to be like that" and walked away. So, she was disappointed, but I had chicken & broccoli (basic) and my dad has shrimp in garlic sauce with string beans, and both of those were super yummy. This is my go to chinese and dimsum spot. They push the dimsum carts on the weekend. They are definitely underrated for their authenticity. I ate here again today with my wife and two of her cousins. This has become an annual tradition over the last few years. My wife makes the pilgrimage to the Pinelawn national cemetary to lay wreaths on the graves of her departed family at Xmas. Eating here afterwards is my reward for making a 2+ hour drive each way for what amounts to about 15 minutes at the grave site. I think this restaurant is even better than I remember it to be from last year. The dim sum service is a well-oiled machine. Service was fast, water and tea were refilled without asking. If you want a dim sum dish that you don't see on the carts, ask and they will get it for you. We had chicken dumplings, shrimp balls with shittake mushrooms, pork dumplings, egg rolls, shrimp rolls, Chinese eggplant, and several other dishes. They sprinkle worcestershire sauce on the egg rolls instead of soy sauce, which was delicious. Try this at home next time you get Chinese takeout. read more

I did a Yelp search for dim sum on Long Island and found only one restaurant with dim sum cart service. The Orient in Bethpage, looked good so we gave it a try. When we arrived at noon on a Sunday, the dining room as packed. There was a good variety of tables of various sizes. We were seated at a four seater. As it works here, you could order dim sum through a small menu on the table, or just wait for carts to roll by. There was one dim sum lady rolling a cart through the dining room and strangely, a bunch of waiters in their black and white uniforms were doing the same! It was a strange sight, but I guess everyone pitches in at this restaurant. We should also note that as we were sitting here for a little over an hour, the dim sum kept changing and rarely did the same cart come around twice. There were new items coming on all the time, though spaced out far apart. In fact, I saw sticky rice roll out just was I was leaving! And now the food: we had beef cheong fun, chiu chow fun kor, egg rolls, fried squid, har kow, spare ribs and a plate of sliced fish over rice. Overall, the quality is quite passable, especially for dim sum in a suburban setting. I felt the cheong fun skin was a bit thick, but reminiscent of 1980's style cheong fun. The same goes for the chiu chow fun kor, which was thick and heavy. The har kow was interesting in that the shrimp was very firm. The fried squid was excellent and fairly tender. As for the rice plate, we really liked the fried slices of fish and gravy. Overall, we enjoyed the loud and happening environment at the Orient. There were tons of families eating and from what I overheard, discovering new dishes. I made the observation as I was leaving, that the non-Asian patrons were served fried wonton skins with sweet and sour sauce. Although I'm Asian, I wished we got a plate of it when we were seated. As for the service, it was fast and efficient, with waiters quickly responding to our requests. In the end, I would definitely come here to get a dim sum fix if I didn't want to go to the city. I've had dim sum in Flushing and tried the Wheel, but the Orient wins hands down. We come here on Sundays and sometimes on Saturdays for dim sums. Come at 11:00 a.m. and you will be seated quickly. Within minutes, the carts and trays make their way towards you. They're filled with a variety of little steamed treasures and gems that put others to shame. We found out about this place from a limo driver. How right he was! It's like a little buffet that comes to you. Bamboo baskets and plates which hold a large variety of wonders your taste buds jump for joy. We finished our meal with mango jello. Excellent service to go with excellent cuisine. This was my first time dining at The Orient for lunch. They have a wide variety of lunch specials that come with an egg roll, soda, or soup, and a choice of rice. We got the Pepper Steak with Onions Lunch Special, and it was very tasty, but I would've liked some more spice as the sauce was on the sweeter side. We also got Dim Sum, which were good to share. Some highlights were the Pan-Fried Leek Dumplings and the Steamed Lotus Paste Buns. The Pan-Fried Leek Dumplings had a crispy exterior and were filled with fresh and flavorful leeks. The Steamed Lotus Paste Buns have a chewy and fluffy outside and are stuffed with a thick and rich Lotus Paste that had a sweet and slightly caramelized flavor. This was my first time trying Pan-Fried Leek Dumplings and Steamed Lotus Paste Buns. I was pleasantly surprised that the food overall was not very salty and oily as some other Chinese restaurants that I have dined at. However, I found the Crispy Shangai Pork Spring Rolls to be too oily, but that is expected as wonton wrappers generally soak up a good amount of the oil they are fried in. Fried Rice was not freshly prepared, soggy with no taste. Moo Shu Pork was tasteless as well, with no crunch to the vegetables. Lo Mein was cooked wit too much soy sauce. The best dish of the disappointing meal was the Yat Gar Mein, except for the fatty pork slices. This was the second disappointing meal in a row for the Orient, following a sub par restaurant visit, normally a tasty experience. This is THE takeout Chinese Restaurant from my office and probably the surrounding area. For takeout, it seems there are as many people coming and going with their orders as there are people eating in. Excellent quality and I have to add quantity. The portions are so huge that it's enough to split a dish and you will be more than satisfied. The food is prepared with a perfect amount of sauces - they don't drown the food, but rather just add enough to give it a really nice flavor. Lunch specials go for $6 - $8 and includes choice of Egg Roll, Soda or Soup. It also comes with either White or Pork Fried Rice. Sesame Chicken, Any Lo Mein Dish and Chicken w/ Cashew Nuts are favorites. The only reason I took off one star is that they are not exactly the friendliest of people. Get the feeling that they just want you in and out -fast. I guess that with their reputation they really don't have to be. After all, it is the food that really matters and they have mastered that. They accommodated a dietary striction for a member in our party. We all enjoyed the stuffed eggplant, the pork dim sum, spareribs but the spring rolls were a bit too greasy for me. Food was good, service lousy, a bit overbearing and crude. Went with 4 adults, a 7 year old and a 12 year old. Not once when we ordered some appetizers, or our 6 meals were we told that it was family style portions. (Our 7 yrs old grandson's plate was enough for 3 adults) (Waste of money) My wife ordered a dish prepared a certain way and the server said no problem. When her dish was brought to the table it was not what she was promised. A different person came by to check on us and said is everything ok. She told him what happened. He yelled for the original server and then began to loudly berate him in Chinese. I do not speak Chinese, but do know when someone is being humiliated by his boss in any language! My wife said never mind she'll eat it that way, at which time the mean guy plopped the plate down in front of her, mumbled something and walked away. No "I'm sorry", it won't happen again, nothing. What a terrible way to treat an employee and to do it in front of a patron of the restaurant while scaring 2 children at the table was just plain terrible. An incredible takeout meal! I ordered via chow now ordering server for takeout. In under 10 minutes, my dinner was ready. Get the boneless spare ribs!
