Before I came here someone said 'know when you're having authentic when half the customers are Chinese' and they were right. Everything my family ordered was great. The Peking pork chop wasn't too lean and wasn't too fatty ... perfect tenderness. The sautéed string beans was nicely cooked with some pickled radish and had a great bite to them. The chicken with ginger and scallion had a nice hint of white pepper which was great too. The reason many Chinese restaurants whether take-out or sit down have gone down in quality and taste over the years is because they no longer cook fresh ingredients on-site. They buy bulk premade entrees, vegetables and all their sauces just to heat them on the stoves. There are large supply warehouse commissary's that make everything for them. In addition, when they deep fry certain items, they use toxic man made vegetable (seed) oils like soy, corn, peanut, canola, etc. and not pork lard like they used to that is natural and healthy. You can tell by the bitter taste (rancid) and oil soaked foods. What a shame. read more

We ended up here due to lunchtime while driving to an appointment. We ordered from the lunch special. I had shrimp with Chinese vegetables, and an order of hot and sour soup served with a lunch special. Hubby had shrimp with string beans with fried rice. Not to mention that Hubby ordered appetizers to try. The eggplant stuffed with shrimp and steamed shrimp rice noodles were his favorites, so I tried those. The appetizers were ok. It sure has been a while since I've had the Orient, and I apologize for my absence! Decided to do take out on a Friday night. Tried calling in, but no answer. I went there to place my order for take out. They were busy as expected, but the wait was well worth it! My order included: Wonton soup- delicious. Not overly salty and a generous serving of wontons for a pint! I believe there was 5 wontons! Egg roll- amazing and huge! Not greasy. Lots of yummy filling. Fried to perfection. Chicken Fried Rice- flavorful, not overly salty Basil Chicken- unique and yummy flavor. Came with string beans and snow peas. The basil flavor was nice and not overpowering. Worst customer service!!! Shrimp with mix vegetables and many other things were ordered. Only 4 shrimps I called to let them know . She raised her voice asked me if I was sure. I told her yes why would I call?! Then she what do u want me to do? Then she spoke to chef and told me impossible. So then asked me again what do u want me to do are u sure impossible with raising her voice. Mind you not first time with issues and attitude. Let's just note this never asked for money or free anything. I just wanted them to know and I'm a good customer. They need to realize we are the paying customers and are from the neighborhood and I do have better things to do than to call middle of my dinner and ask them a question. Everything was delicious. Most of my favorites were there. I went Saturday morning for dim sum and was able to get a table right away. I liked watching the carts steaming with food pass by. Came here in the middle of quarantine time but Long Island was open for indoor dining so I decided to travel all the way into LI just to get some dim sum! We had ordered a ton for 3 people and practically all the basic dim sum you can even think of (was too excited and only snapped 1 picture) :( But I did record a little so I'll def post it soon or on my YT channel! They didn't take our temperatures or anything upon arrival but everyone was super distant (table wise). Let's talk about the food! The shumai was def good and the sticky lotus leaf wrap was everyone's favorite! I really liked the beef rice noodle rolls, highly recommend! The typically ha gao (shrimp dumplings) wasn't as great but it could've been a hit or miss type of day. Overall, I would def return if I was ever in this part of long island again. Downhill Alert This place used to be great so we were always able to look past the nasty attitudes of the servers, but this is no longer the case. The last three times we went the food has been below average and the prices keep getting higher each time we go. Yesterday we had four tiny lunch specials for $80, and my kids did not touch their food, even though they used to love this place. We met my husband's family here for dimsum. The restaurant is in a strip mall where there wasn't much parking in the lot as there is a gym 2 doors down. I've never been here, but my SIL says the NY family has been coming here for many years for dimsum. I thought the food was pretty good. My husband didn't think it was great. Chicken feet are my favorite and I thought it was on par with other dimsum places I've tried. We arrived around 11:30 am and the place was maybe half full. More people arrived later. Not nearly as busy as the places in Flushing, which is kind of nice. No waiting for a table. Dined here with my family for our family-friends birthday a couple of weeks back. Our family friend loves authentic Chinese food and we had not visited this restaurant yet so we decided to come check it out. We came on a Saturday night for an early dinner, and it was already pretty busy. Thankfully we were seated right away. We started off with some egg rolls, bbq spare ribs, and soup dumplings. The egg rolls and ribs were tasty. I wasn't a fan of their soup dumplings. I've definitely had better from other places. For the main entree's, we shared the sesame chicken, pork-fried rice, beef lo main, and filet steak with asparagus and lotus root. The steak dish was definitely my favorite. It was very tender and tasty. The sesame chicken was also good, as it was not heavily breaded like other places make it. Overall, some of the dishes were good, and the others were mediocre. This is always my control when it comes to ordering Chinese food; if a restaurant doesn't make this well, I don't end up coming back. I thought this place made the dish well with more meat than expected. I do with for more vegetables though. General Tso Chicken - Not all batter. Are you kidding me with the average rating of this place?!?! The Orient Restaurant is reminiscent of old style Chinese restaurants in downtown Manhattan! They herd you in like sheep, it's slightly chaotic, but the food is brought out in mass and is outstanding! The Wonton Soup is more of the War Wonton variety in my opinion, but it is excellent in it's own right! The Lo Mein had that smoky flavor and was packed with pork which made me appreciate it even more! The General Tso's was a little too gooey with the sauce drenched over it, but the flavor was good and chicken chunks of a nice size. The Pork Fried Rice was quite possibly the winner with the abundance of pork and egg which made it quite hearty! Answer: Not the worthy Fortune Wheel but The Orient, a local treasure, the subject of this review. On Friday, October 2nd, I hosted a dinner for 8 here. It is in a small strip mall on 107, almost across the street from the old Grumman. There is parking in front of and behind the strip of stores. Our group was seated promptly and the server took our orders promptly. Service was polite and attentive but at times clueless because we had to tell multiple employees that we were not dining family style. No big deal. Just a communication glitch. I started my meal with a Ting Dao. Yummy and refreshing. Followed with the Egg Drop Wonton Soup. Nice broth and flavor but I wish the Wontons were a little thinner. Next up, Clams with Black Bean Sauce. It arrived in a HUGE portion. The Clams and Bean Sauce were perfectly cooked well-seasoned and delicious, spectacular enough to be the sole reason to come here. My side of Yong Chow Fried Rice was next. It was tasty and loaded with ham and shrimp but a little dry. Would order something elese next time. My companions loved this place. I tasted the Tangerine Chicken and it was fabulous. So flavorful and not over-breaded as at some places. One diner raved over her Spare Ribs, another over her Peking Pork Chops. Been coming to this restaurant for the longest time. I love the dimsum here and the owner Tommy is always on his A game and doing his best for the restaurant. The servers are always circling around and are attentive to all customers if they want something in the cart. This is the place for dim sum! I've gone to Chinatown for dim sum many many many many times and this restaurant has just as much variety and flavor as any of the major dim sum restaurants in Chinatown. We don't eat pork, so it's important for us to have other options. The beef rice noodle, beef balls, chicken buns, shrimp rice noodle, seafood buns are just a few examples of what we can enjoy. I'll be honest, we've only done take out here since we first tried this place a few months ago during the pandemic. But the food is so delicious (even after reheating) and we always end with a sweet egg custard, taro or sesame bun! read more

They're all fresh made in the morning. My favorite things are the Pan Fried Chive Dumpling, Crystal Shrimps, Shrimp Rice Noodle, Ribs with Black Bean Sauce, Eggplant with Shrimps, Tofu Wraps, Sesame Balls and so much more. Our search for Long Island dim sum continues. I left one that was a mile to try this restaurant and result was the same. The owner jumped up and asked if we dining in. We were seated quickly. I can see this restaurant also had a big takeout business. We had to ordered from a menu for our dim sum, no carts. The baked roasted pork bun was warm but the pork lacking in flavor. The pork shu mai had a strange taste and I figured out they put Chinese sausage with pork. The beef rice noodle roll was hot and tasty and the chive seafood dumpling was good. The har gow was lacking in flavor. Service was good. I surrender. I am waving the white flag. I will wait for phase 3 dining in restrictions to be lifted in NYC. read more

The Orient has been there for a long time. I do like their dim sum quite good and fresh with friendly staff, and the little custard filled tarts they serve on Saturday and Sunday. A few days ago I ordered takeout. I gave my name. They usually ask for the last 4 digits of your phone number. I would take one star away for the takeout. Upon picking it up, I really had trouble with opening their door. I am not sure if it was a wind bubble or if the door is broken but I had to use my body weight to open it. Though I do have to say when I ordered the scrimp in lobster sauce, the young lady did suggest the lunch menu, that I ordered with a fried rice side and wonton soup along with my additional order of a pint of pork Lo MeIn. I suggest also that if you do not need them, tell them when ordering, not to put in plastic silverware. I have enough for a (pre pandemic) BBQ and never have to buy them. But I forgot, and, along with them, came the little packages of sauces and fried noodles. So, here's the critique of that food. ---the soup was salt water. The 2 wontons in it were all boiled dough. Nothing to write home about there. The Lo MeIn, well , I wondered how long it had been sitting and the shrimp and lobster sauce was to say, average. My husband choked when he ate it and something got caught in his throat. I asked about dessert and they have a few flavors of Jello, one being coconut. I did not order it but went to the restaurant next door to check out their deserts. I loved this restaurant a number of years ago, haven't been here in a while seeing how I live in Oceanside. We recently purchased a business about 1.5 miles away and I was excited to take my Chinese wife here.   Atmosphere is classic and the staff was very nice.  We had three Dim Sum dishes, then ordered our food. We were surprised how quick the  entrees came to the table.  We ordered a fish dish, a steak dish, and a vegetable dish. All three were slightly warmer than room temperature. Both my wife and I love our food Hot. It truly made no sense how this food could not be scalding hot, considering food that is delivered to my house from a Chinese restaurant is much hotter than this food that was made 60 feet from where I was sitting. Part of the reason was the plate it was served on was ICE cold.  Anyway my wife and I did enjoy the food and the dim sum.  I wanted to expressed my concerns to management, so I could keep coming back. I'm explaining what happened AFTER I paid my bill to a young lady behind the counter. As I am explaining it to her, the owner/manager walks past me, pushing me aside as he walks past me saying out loud yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway we won't be back.  Like I said we are new to the area and my Chinese wife and I will find a different Asian restaurant to frequent. We will scratch this hasbeen place off of our list.
