Gonella's has one of the best Italian sub sandwiches in metro Detroit. My favorite is the six layer Italian on a soft roll. The different meats are fresh and full of flavor. The turkey sub is also quite tasty. Even though the prices have increased, the sandwich is worth it. The staff are super friendly and the inside is always very clean. Tony just brought home my "veggie" sub. Told the girl everything on it. I said to him "what do you mean by everything" he looked at me funny and I showed him this. In a time when venturing out for food should be a special treat, this sub was a huge disappointment. The veggie sub had nothing I couldn't find in my fridge. It had shredded lettuce, tomato, onion and three cheeses (American, Swiss and provolone) on a thick white bun. That's all. no pickles, no yellow peppers, no green peppers, and no special sauce to make it unique. This sandwich that lacked any semblance of imagination costed $6.50. Good sandwiches on a hard bun. Owner is a nice guy and really takes pride in his subs. Deli is very clean and has a lots of room for extras. I would recommend this deli to all new customers. I tried here and asked for a 14 layer and requested just cheddar and Swiss and the guy said the second cheese was fifty cents more ????? I do say the sandwich was delicious but it didn't look remotely like a picture of one of the other reviews. The price was fine for the weight of the sandwich but it wasn't what I was expecting. I have tried a lot of different Italian subs, and so I tend to be very skeptical when I hear "the best Italian sub in Detroit." I too had felt like Gonella's was never going to open so I was extremely thrilled when they did. I eagerly placed my order and went and picked it up. I was pleased to see that this is a nice Italian deli, very clean, where I can pick up Italian specialty foods without having to travel a long distance to my favorite Italian bakery. I took home my sandwiches, 8-layer Italian subs, to my family, and we dug in. They were quite large, and very good indeed. The mixture of meats and cheese is certainly delicious and more varied than you would get on an Italian sub elsewhere, the bread was fresh, the amount of toppings was perfect, and the dressing was not a goopy ladleful of oily dressing, but a light vinaigrette. It was a hot day, and it was just what I wanted. I will definitely be back. read more

Please don't be fooled...This place is worst of the worst...Been going to their place for 20 years...But its my last trip, it will not happen again...All inexpensive, bottom shelf meats, the least expensive to be found anywhere...Meat is Pre Cut, not cut to order like Jersey Mikes Subs or other shops that know how to build a quality sandwich...I drove all the way from Novi for a sub, I ordered a salami and provolone sub, with the works. I was told they were out of "already cut" salami, so I requested another meat. I was told they were out of that pre cut meat as well. Please be aware that both whole means were standing right in front of me of me, the only thing stopping me from enjoying a sub was their refusal to put the meat on the machine and cut either meat to make me a sandwich, The owner was standing right there and did nothing...Beware!...this place is not what you think, it sure wont happen to me again...What A Joke! read more
