Delicious fish and chips! I believe it was $16 for two large pieces of halibut and $11-13 for a two piece cod order, which is pretty comparable to other places in the Portland metro. The batter was light and crisp. The chips were nicely seasoned. I really liked the potatoes and the fish was fresh. I was quoted about a 25 minute wait but they had my order in about 20 minutes. My interactions with the couple were pleasant and efficient. I would definitely choose this cart again when visiting this food cart pod. read more

Nothing wrong with starting out 2018 with a review of a really good fish spot at a food pod that I didn't know existed. Thai, sushi burritos, Turkish, beer and really great fish and chips all at Piedmont Station. As for Halibuts? Well, late in the evening, it was one of only a few carts open but the only one that had a line. Halibut, cod, salmon, catfish and prawns all on the menu and made while you wait. I went with the cod and chips and I got two pieces of fish, plenty of fries and house made tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. The tartar was creamy and mild and the cocktail sauce was LOADED with horseradish and went straight to my nose like wasabi does. So good that I was dipping my fries in it. The fish was clean, light, fresh and not greasy at all and so tasty. It couldn't have been a better way to end my night. This is a nice little are up on Killingsworth, not sure how many of you end up in North East Portland, but this cart is worth it for the trip. Enjoy! read more

I've been here twice now and two things stand out: great fish and great people! Really, the fish is to die for. The halibut is so tender and perfectly battered. The cod is fall apart flaky. Perfectly cooked. Just delicious! Both times I've been there the man and woman cooking (I assume the owners) engaged in conversation. They were passionate about their food and so friendly. Delicious! Very well done fish and chips. I had the halibut. The good: Great flavors, tender and crispy breading. The tarter sauce was great. The bad: (which doesn't reflect the rating because it's little stuff or not their fault) For $19 the pieces of fish were a bit small. Could have been a few bucks cheaper or one more piece of fish. They gave me the wrong beeper so my food was there for a while and wasn't hot when I got it. 4.50 stars. I don't know where the impostors are located and have no interest in finding them. I've been to a couple of famous fish and chips joints in my time (most of them outside the States) and I'll note that The Original Halibuts is probably at the top of the food chain. I say probably because I tried their fish and chips with halibut as opposed to cod, and I can't say with full confidence that the cod is as excellent as the halibut. What i can unequivocally note is the halibut and chips dish is absolutely fantastic. A number of people have compared the halibut coating to tempura. I get the reference, but I'm not sure I'd necessarily agree. It is a thin layer of nicely browned coating that has a nice crisp finish to it. The halibut has a great firm feel to it. The food truck provides tartar sauce and Heinz malt vinegar and lemons. Give your order a light squeeze of lemon, a generous pour of malt vinegar (my minor complaint is I wish they went with their own here), dip your fish into the tartar sauce and devour. People also talk up the clam chowder which in fact was quite tasty. As everyone notes, there are liberal chunks of the important stuff (clam, bacon) interspersed with the potatoes. A cream flavor carries the day and would likely be especially soothing on a cold winter afternoon. It was fine in 90 degree weather as well. I wasn't in Portland for too many days and this isn't even the most famous food truck within the Piedmont food pod. That said, I certainly am not second guessing my decision to come here. read more

Ok this place is a gem. The Halibut is BOMB! It's so good. My brother took my family to this food truck park, The Original Halibut is one of the trucks all the way in the back. While I was deciding which trucks I wanted to try I noticed a steady flow of people heading toward this truck. So I gave it a shot. I didn't know what to order so I followed the trucks sign "Try us.. Just for the halibut" and let me tell you, I have ZERO regrets. It was so good that I had to share a piece with my wife, aunt, mom, dad, brother, and sister in law and they all admitted that they should have ordered from here. The food was awesome. First time there last Friday. The man and woman working today were super friendly and helpful. Not sure what the other yelpers were crying about... I got the True Cod 2 Piece and added 2 pieces of catfish. I wanted chowder, but they had sold out and would take 15 minutes to get some more made. I declined and waited for my food. As my food finished, the owner told me the chowder was finally ready and offered me a cup to sample. Told me I'd want a quart and he wasn't lying. I went to pick it up, and I was condescendingly told to ask my wife to order from a different app, and to take a picture of the side of the truck because he would prefer us to order direct in future. I don't enjoy lectures on what to do with my money or on what I should or should not discuss with my wife. We were driving to get some boba tea when we saw a group of food pods on the way. Instead of going to an actual restaurant, we thought we would check out these out which is how we happened upon The Original Halibuts! We had been wanting fish and chips the entire trip so we figured this sounded like the perfect option for us. Since we weren't too terribly hungry, my fiancé and I decided to share just one order. The man who was at the truck was very friendly and helpful. He suggested that if we wanted the best type of fish he had that we get the halibut, so we did. Our order came out in a timely manner and everything was piping hot and crispy! The breading on the fish was good but the pieces of fish were fairly small. If I had gone there hungry, I definitely would've been able to finish a whole fish & chips plate on my own. By far though, my favorite thing was the tarter sauce! I ate pretty much all of the fries with that ... no ketchup needed. They have lots of seating available although it wasn't too busy at the time we went. Went here after my wife and I's hike and I gotta day that I was absolutely impressed! What's different about his fish and chips is the quality and how fresh his fish is. He doesn't need to season the heck out of it because he sources such a great catch of halibut and doesn't want to cover it up, which makes sense. Lightly fried and breaded. No more than what is necessary. You get 2 thick cuts of fresh halibut, fresh fries, homemade cocktail sauce and homemade tarter sauce for about 15 bucks and it's worth every penny. It is everything you could want out of fish and chips without feeling unhealthy afterwards. The owner is a colorful guy as well. Funny, genuine and a little different as is appreciated is Portland. Probably among the best fish and chips you'll find in Portland. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who likes fish and is okay with not getting a seasoned or fried to hell piece of fish. read more

What a gem. These folks have halibut figured out and the clam chowder is on the same plane. I started eating "Fish & Chips" years ago in Illinois. Probably frozen chunks of cod, in batter so thick it was hard to bite through it. After I moved to the West Coast I still resisted halibut because it was a couple dollars more expensive. Then one day I tried it. Clearly better, but still way too heavily battered. Then I read a glowing review of The Original Halibut and tried theirs. Their halibut (a generous two filets) is perfectly cooked and delicately battered (think tempura). The clam chowder is its equal - I haven't counted but probably more clams than potatoes. Not watery like many (they post the recipe on the website). Clams are tender not chewy like the cheap stuff. Enjoy! read more

Was so excited to try this cart as I always crave a good clam chowder. I'll separate the food and service experience. Service: The man at the cart offered my dog a treat which was nice but that's about as nice as he'll get. I ordered cod and clam chowder and asked if we were eating there or to go, and I wasn't sure yet so I just ordered to go to be safe. He said "I'll just give you a lid then." He left me a bad impression while I was waiting for my food. My partner went to go grab the food and the nice lady also working the truck asked if we needed spoons and forks, and the man said "they're gonna eat here and waste our to go box, what's the point of ordering to go." We actually ate there and took the rest home, so no matter what we needed a box. Food: The food was really good. The chowder was thick and flavorful and the fries were seasoned so well. We loved this place when we were recently in Oregon on vacation! This food cart is located within the Piedmont Food Cart Station and it was so yummy. We came upon this place on Yelp and noticed it was only a few blocks away from our Airbnb so we decided to give it a try our first night in Portland. We were incredibly impressed. We ordered the halibut and the cod baskets. The fish was delicious and the fries were so crispy. Each basket comes with 2 large pieces of fish and a hefty amount of fries! The owner offers malt vinegar and my boyfriend found a new obsession! He poured it on everything for the remainder of our trip. Lets just say this place made an impression and the owners personality left a mark as well! First of all, to everyone who thinks it's overpriced, the prices are clearly listed and Dave is more than happy to answer any questions you have as to the quality of the fish he uses so YOU can make the CHOICE to get something from them or not. The person that posted a picture of halibut at Fred Meyer (that's been likely twice or thrice frozen and thawed before it even made it to the seafood section) and suggested you could make the same thing at home, is quite frankly, an (redacted). If you're a good enough home cook to be able to deep fry your fish where the batter is perfectly crispy and golden brown while the fish is perfectly moist and cooked then you shouldn't have to pay for having your food cooked for you. If you want more for your money, just get a box of breaded fish filets while you're at Fred Meyer and pop em in the oven at home where no one can judge you. I've had the cod, salmon and the halibut and they've all been consistently great and super fresh. It was all well worth what I paid knowing the fish supplied is not like anything I could buy myself at Fred Meyer, much less cook it as well as they do. Anything that comes out of their deep-fryer is perfectly done and their clam chowder is as good as it gets this far from the coast. Please remember that that quality food that you get from them is prepared and cooked up inside a vehicle that was originally meant to haul your Amazon Prime purchases to your door. With that in mind, I'd add a star simply for degree of difficulty if I could. So for myself, in my mind, I get more than my money's worth anytime I eat here. Just think about this. For a few bucks more than that specialty coffee you paid $5-7 for because the coffee beans were harvested out of the droppings of a jungle cat, you can get quality seafood. read more
