Lemon Meringue pie to go. I forgot to take photo of the slice of pie when I cut into it.

The last real retro diner left in the area and I had not dined here. It is known for its breakfast as the menu consists of many items with a huge variety of egg dishes, griddle items, biscuits and gravy, etc. Also, popular are the BBQ items but I do not eat pork, nor beef so I opted for a grilled crab melt with soup of the day being Chicken Rice Soup. The sandwich and soup were delicious! Many rave about the fresh baked pies so I took an entire Lemon Meringue pie to go for dessert. (I was disappointed when I ate a slice; the crust was hard, not flaky and the lemon filling was orangey, not yellow. But it did taste like lemon.) The servers are very efficient and cordial. And I was lucky to find a parking spot in the back.

My friends wanted to meet up together and get brunch, so we decided to go to this place. We made a reservation, so seating was easy. It was quite packed today on a Sunday, but we sat all the way in the back. After taking our order, it did take quite a bit before we got our food. Veggie Benedict: I always have to order this if a restaurant serves it and I will say this place did not disappoint. The Hollandaise was on point, being thick and not runny. The flavor was also good. The Benedict itself was simple, with tomatoes and avocado. I wish it did have spinach though (that would make it a Florentine Benny). But I still enjoyed what I ate. The each was poached perfectly for me, with it only running once I broke the whites. My only disappointment was I asked for crispy hash browns and I felt it was not crispy enough for me. Overall, had a nice brunch and I would love to come back again and try more.

This will forever always be one of my favorite restaurants. I have been coming here with my family since I was a kid. The French dip sandwich on Dutch crunch is OUT OF THIS WORLD. The meat is so juicy and tender. I order it every single time we go. The mashed potatoes are made fresh and never disappoint. They have a wide variety of different foods, from breakfast, bbq ribs, tri tip, salads, the best pies! The servers are always very attentive and very friendly and helpful. The ambiance reminds me of an old school hofbrau, but the food never disappoints!

*****Food Review***** The Original Hick'ry Pit has been a Walnut Creek fixture for decades. It's located on the south end of city, next to Kaiser Hospital. On 01/17/2025, I came here for an early dinner with two friends before heading across the street to catch a high school basketball game. It wasn't too busy when we walked in at around 6pm. The hostess greeted us, and we were seated at a table in the new bar area. The nostalgic ambiance remained the same in the main dining area. Our server was a friendly Asian woman, who promptly brought us menus and water. After a few minutes of deliberating, my friends opted for the Western Sausage Omelet and the Veggie Scramble (with egg whites), while I got the Wood-Smoked Chicken Salad. Our food arrived quickly since our server sensed that we were in a hurry. My salad was overall so-so. The produce was fresh, and the chicken was moist, tender, and plentiful. Taste wise, very little smokiness was noticed, and it actually reminded of Costco rotisserie chicken. Additionally, I found a sharp piece of inedible tendon in my food. Hopefully, management will see this review and the kitchen staff will do a better job shredding the chicken from now on. This place is frequented by many local seniors and I certainly don't want anyone finding such surprise. Service we received was adequate. The total, with tax and an 18% tip, was close to $67. This place remains my top local choice for pies, but their food definitely needs some improvement. 3 stars.

Came here to try the barbecue. It's like an old diner inside. Staff are great and service was nice. Tried the 3 meat barbecue plate with grilled vegetables and beans. The St. Louis ribs are delicious they do those very well. Tri tip was decent and the pulled pork was average at best. The beans were over seasoned and the grilled vegetables were mostly carrots and steamed, not grilled. Tried the SF chocolate pie for dessert it was ok. Overall it was ok.

I love the vibe old school diner foods just ok like most diners. The help is awesome old school very helpful . You can't shake the vibe off it's good brings you back . Plenty of parking but this place caters to old crowd just like us but watch their driving they are a bit on the crazy side you know what I mean. Anyway I would go back for the old school vibe not the food

Where do I start.. we had a small ten person group.. so we ordered many items and got to taste each others food. Ribs and egg Benedict were my orders.. I took home over half from their huge servings. Service was great.

Classic diner feel with some good food! I have been coming here all my life and it's a great easy go to. The breakfast is great, sit at the counter if you are in a group of 2 or by yourself! Bbq or smoked meats are also very tasty and perfect catering for a party! Also don't forget to try their pie! For our most recent catering experience, make sure you hold on to your receipts. They lost our order, the manager attending to us was very rude and not helpful, however the head chef took over and saved the day. He was very kind and friendly and made sure we got everything we needed! We got ribs and tri tip which were cooked to perfection!

The ambiance is cool, they play oldies but goodies, they have a full bar and 5 television near the bar . The service is good and we got our food delivered fast. I would have gave them 4 stars but my French fries were overcooked and greasy my husbands were cold. The ribs were so good and full of flavor. The meat fell off the bone. The beef rib sandwich was also so tasty and the meat was cooked to perfection.

Well I have to say I was terribly disappointed in the breakfast. I expected so much more. The gravy was obviously instant and I expected homemade. They only had hash browns no country potatoes biscuits were okay but not spectacular. Bacon was mediocre eggs were just eggs. What got me was a coffee it could have woke up to dead. Service wasn't that great either but of course I tip nicely. Waitresses seem more interested in sitting around talking catching up on gossip rather than providing service. Most restaurants The waitresses are running around filling up your coffee mug. Not here I don't know why I expected so much from a restaurant. I thought with the country name like hickory pit it would be a little bit more becoming. I expected the food to have a better quality not like a Denny's. I probably won't go back Sorry no photos I didn't bring my camera

The menu is a as large as their pies. Given the restaurant's name I was surprised there weren't many bbq options compared to the other offerings. The bbq was good but was it really bbq'd? We shared the meat plate and it was plenty of food. The milkshake was good and alas no room for pie. The service was slow from time to time. We were seated way in the back of the restaurant so maybe that is why we were forgotten about. While there wasn't anything bad there wasn't anything stellar so we probably won't go back.

Since we were there so early we were able to get seated right away without reservations. Walking in my first impression is this restaurant is beautiful! It's professionally decorated/designed. We ordered the ube latte, matcha latte, marnier French toast, coconut moffle, and millionaires bacon. Service was great! Everything came out very quickly! The ube latte actually had a very strong ube taste and not just the brilliant purple color. And you could tell it was freshly prepared since it was still a tiny bit warm despite being an iced drink. The matcha came with cute latte art and was filled to the brim. The matcha was a good strength without crossing into overly earthy. The French toast had a very smoky flavor that reminded me of the smoke when a birthday candle is blown out. I don't know how they did that. It was a very unique flavor. The moffle was a very balanced and tasty dish. The Brie went well with the raspberries. The waffle had a nice chewy texture from the mochi. I didn't get a lot of coconut flavor but I still enjoyed it a lot! The millionaires bacon hit all the right notes for me. You have the saltiness, a kick of spiciness, some sweetness, etc. The only negative for me was the front door/entrance should stay closed more. There were some flies that distracted from the lovely experience. But that may not be completely possible given how popular they are there are probably a lot of people coming in and out at any given time. We left stuffed but without leftovers. It is a little pricier for breakfast. I think after tip it was around $100. So it was $50 per person. This is one of the best brunches I've had in a long time! I can't wait to come back and try their other items.

I told my food server I thought the fries or salad went with my sandwich and I wanted the $6 charge removed, he said he'd have to ask his manager. After waiting quite a while for someone to come to our table, we finally placed our drink order. I ordered a cappuccino and asked for sugar. When it didn't come, I reminded our server. She still did not bring it. I waited roughly 15 to 20 minutes, long enough for my cappuccino to get cold, before I had to physically get up and ask someone else to find our server. Only after reminding her again was the sugar finally brought over. It then took another 30 to 40 minutes for someone to come take our actual food order. Our server was unfriendly, disengaged, and gave the impression that she simply did not want to be there. There was no warmth, no apology for the delays, and no effort to check in or improve the experience. The food was also disappointing. Other than the pizza, most of what we ordered either arrived lukewarm or simply did not taste good. Between the poor service, the long waits, and the underwhelming food, the entire meal felt careless from start to finish. I understand restaurants can have difficult days, but this was not just a small delay or one missed item. It was a consistently poor experience throughout the visit, and frankly, not what I would expect from Main Street Kitchen.

The waiter mentioned it had been on their menu for 22 years and that people traveled there to try it. I can believe it! Speaking of service, it was exceptional. Along with our friendly main waiter, there were other staff refilling water glasses and changing table settings quickly as needed. We waited on nothing but also never felt interrupted. Since Va da Vi IS a wine bar, I should mention that wine was also wonderful. I tried their Pinot Noir flight and enjoyed all 3 of the 3 oz samplings, especially the 2023 Status Quo and the 2023 "Klee" by Roots Wine Co. Is it pricey? Well, a little, but not for the quality. I've eaten at places just as expensive and left far less satisfied. I can see the bill adding up quickly for a group who wants a huge meal, but if you're into just sipping and nibbling on amazing food and wine, come!
