The Original Timmy Chan is one of those restaurants that folks in Houston tell you that you have to try. Especially the one on MLK street. So that's what I did. I ordered the shrimp fried rice and wing combo. The fried rice was super fresh and hot. But I was a little turned off by the little shrimp they used. Definitely not seasoned and tasted rubbery. On a random Sunday around 4PM this spot was already packed, with lines out the door, parking lot full, and drivethru line out into the street. It definitely feels like an experience and something like a southside staple. This is definitely not a spot for the faint of heart. Barred windows, bullet proof glass, security guard patrolling the area, def not a place to sit and eat (not that they really have any dining space). However, during the day, with my oblivious and overall nonchalant nature, I felt fine. We waited in line to order, which took a little bit of time as it does seem a bit understaffed for the number of customers. Ordering was somewhat difficult as I could barely understand the cashier and wasn't aware of all the options and sides. We (over)ordered the orange chicken, 4 wings with shrimp fried rice, and catfish and shrimp meals along with 2 teacakes. Food came out after ~15-20 minutes and we grabbed our food and headed out. Portions are very generous for the price and food was good. Its Chinese-American food and they seem to do it well. I thought the catfish was really moist and tender, the chicken wings were really crisp and well seasoned, the orange chicken didn't travel super well but the flavor was nice, more orange than I expected. I'd say I was pleasantly surprised by the food. There is no place for hate when it comes to Timmy Chans! Place has been phenomenal for decades. Only losers complain about their cash only rule. You might have to wait in line but it's worth it. It's not much to look at from the outside or inside, does not offer any frills, had difficult parking, but prices are pre-inflation throwback, the food is pretty good overall and comes in generous servings. My favorite part of our meal was the fried chicken, catfish, and shrimp which each had a nice southern style breading, a salt and pepper seasoning, and tasted fresh. Our fries were also really tasty with a good thickness and crunchiness and were not too oily. The orange chicken was ok, but not that special and was probably my least favorite thing we ordered. I decided to try this restaurant to see what all the hype was about, but overall, it was just okay for me. The first issue I ran into was finding out at the drive-thru that they only accept cash. After waiting in a long line, I had to maneuver my way out, find an ATM that actually worked nearby, and then come back to place my order. That alone made the experience more frustrating than it needed to be. The food came out hot and fresh, which I appreciated. However, the shrimp in the shrimp fried rice had a very unusual bright pink color that honestly made me question it. The fried catfish and shrimp were heavily breaded, to the point that it took away from the flavor of the seafood itself. On a positive note, the shrimp lo mein was pretty good, and the fried biscuits were definitely one of the better items I tried. I used to go here in the 90s for their famous wings and rice. Recently decided to give it a couple more try this year. It sure has gone downhill. First order of 6 wings and rice came with 12 winglets instead of whole wings. They should have let us know they were out of whole wings. Decided to give it another try. This time, the wings were full wings but was over cooked and dry. It was more on the darker side than golden. The batter was bitter indicating old oil was being use. I've been a fan since childhood and wanted to introduce my children to some good food. I ordered an 8 piece wing with pork fried rice and it was enough to feed a family of 4! The kids and I enjoyed the well seasoned chicken wings which were fried to perfection and pork fried rice with all of the fixin's, sprouts, green onion, and plenty of fried pork. Maaaan, the drive-thru line for this place is nuts, everytime I pass by it on the freeway. It's the only location open, now that the Southloop location was closed down, due to the pandemic. I was craving some chicken fried rice with some egg rolls (veggies and meat). That's what I used to get from T.C.'s, growing up in Third Ward. It was the weekend spot to hit up and the before\after the club food for me and my friends. Not this location, but they were all over the place at one time. I drove into the badly constructed parking lot, masked up, and walked into the restuarant. It was empty, aside from a lone security guard, and the workers behind the counter. Behind the counter to ceiling plexi-glass partition, the young lady asked for my order. With a sense of delight, I ordered the chicken fried rice, an order of egg rolls, and one of their tea cakes. When it was time to pay, she killed my enthusiasm when she told me that they only took cash. I saw no signs in the lobby, but she them pointed to a small sign behind her. She then told me that there was an ATM at the corner store, across the street. I looked over and saw that the parking lot of the corner store was filled with the local "riff-raff." I chose to use Google Maps to find the closest bank ATM...which was about 3 miles away and sat in the middle of a huge, run down strip center parking lot. I was desperate and hungry, so I threw caution to the wind, drove to it, and hurriedly withdrew $20. Back at the restaurant, I paid for my food and waited about 10 minutes for my food. They called my order number, I grabbed the food, jumped into my car, and high-tailed it out of there...scraping the bottom of my car on the 45 degree inclined parking lot exit. At home, I laid everything out and began to partake. Long story short, the chicken fried rice was extremely salty, the egg rolls tasted like they had a vinaigrette mixed in, which left a weird, filmy taste on my tongue, and the tea cake tasted bland and more like a vanilla cookie than a tea cake. The restaurant is small so I assume most order to go, which is what I did. The lines are long and bleed out into the street but it moves rather quick. They only take cash so keep that in mind. I love LOVE that they offer plain fried rice because I hate veggies in my rice. They also offer the veggie fried rice as well. My little sister had us come here and after hearing about it in South Park Mexican's songs for years I was ready. She got the Mongolian beef and it was pretty tasty honestly.
