Came to check out this place was recommended by a family member . We placed our order and was waiting for some time . We were planning on leaving due to the wait. There was an employee named Tim came and asked if we were ok and if we needed anything . I told him that we were waiting for our drinks and within a couple minutes he brought our drinks to us . Not sure where the server went but we were very well satisfied . If it wasn't for Tim and his professionalism we would have left and most likely not came back . DO NOT COME HERE- HORRIBLE SERVICE On a Saturday evening a group of 4 of us came by. The security guard checked our ID, then we went down the stairs and strolled right through the door of the entrance. As we entered, we hesitated as we scanned the room for an open table in the dim room where people were either sitting at booth, table or random chairs. There were several scattered tables that were open but had empty bottles, used napkins and other trash left on it from the previous customers. Kinda gross, but sat down and we pushed the mess aside. We sat for 10 minutes before a little guy wearing an over-sized bow tie asked if we checked in. 'Check-in?' we question him. 'Yeah' he replied, 'You need to check in with the girl at the door', as he sped off to help other patrons. 'Okay' my friend said, and we knew then to just leave the joint. First, there wasn't a girl at the door when the server told us that AND there was no girl present when we first came in. Second, there were other people who came in after us who didn't 'check in' and were not hassled. One of my friends said this is the second time here and they received non-existent service the first time. By reading some of the other reviews I'm starting to think this place is DISCRIMINATES. Not even sure why this is considered a "Speak Easy". Is it because it has a dark-lit, old and dilapidated looking atmosphere, and a lack of signage to the actual location of the bar? After living in Chandler for some time, it took me forever to finally discover this place. I had passed by that little basement staircase many times not knowing it was a fun little speakeasy. Speakeasies were secret establishments that required a password to enter during the prohibition days. We have many of them all over the Valley. This one has been in Chandler for quite some time and is named for Chandler's long association with ostriches. The entrance has no name. Just a red light over a wooden door. Inside, Ostrich is full of life and makes you feel like you traveled back to the 20's. Old photos, whiskey barrels, leather booths, old books, and life size ostrich statues make up the decor of this place. They also have fun tiki nights where they will discount drinks if you wear Hawaiian attire. The bartenders are engaging and love to display their skills for making classic cocktails. My most recent drinks were the Blue Hawaiian and the Scorpion when I last visited here. The Ostrich is always an adventure and makes for a good time with friends. They partner with Crust restaurant right above them for food if you are needing a bite. read more

My speakeasy seeking PIC and I rolled up here on Friday, June 16, 2023 about 4:45 pm. I mentioned this because Crust was hosting a corporate event for avionics companies. We realized we needed to explore for another 15-minutes, I wandered off to find a geocache, and Audrey sought out the entrance for The Ostrich (a suggestion by her daughter) I returned from not finding the cache, but Audrey and Daniel wheeled the corner. She introduced us, and Daniel mentioned to find him again at 5 pm so he can guide us to the secret entrance. (Later) Daniel does guide us to the secret entrance, and briefly explains the history of the speakeasy. It was so cool! A false wall that's a door was very James Bond-ish. Once again, I'm gonna harp on the missed music opportunity with the contemporary tunes versus period music *sigh* I am alone in the thinking of providing an experiential vibe with decor, dress, patrons, and music. I digress. The walls were adorned with mugshots of celebrities! Of course, the token ostriches needed to be present. On to the main event ... the drinks! We were acknowledged immediately when we posted up at the bar. I ordered a Room 301 since none of the set menu drinks that were specific to The Ostrich had rum in it. Audrey ordered a Mexican Firing Squad. Both cocktails were well done by our mixologist. After our obligatory drink photos we toasted and happily sipped away. In the meantime, we ordered the meatball sliders which were plenty for us. Again, I would've awarded 5-stars *IF* the music matched the experience. Regardless, I would highly recommend The Ostrich any day, and any time they are open. read more

Great place! Unfortunately the music was WAY too loud. Me and my table were yelling at each other because we had to fight against the club music. Even the server said she enjoyed serving in the other half of the room more than the side we were sitting in. Too dark, too loud for a dining space. MAYBE if there was a dance floor...it was giving very much gay club vibes (which I love cuz I'm gay but this was the WRONG setting for that). We left early cuz we wanted to be able to hear each other while we enjoyed our drinks (found ourselves at Hidden House down the street). Drinks were DELICIOUS. Server, Emma, was amazing! This is definitely one of those places you come for an experience. My ears are still ringing from how loud it was inside and my stomach is growling however I'm still really glad I went!! Just finding this place alone is a part of the experience , " look for the orange lamp". The Ostrich is supposed to be the hidden gem of downtown Chandler, it's underground and tucked away . Don't be like me and wandering lost, ask for help. I'm still new to the area but I believe it's by Crust. Our waitress was slow and very disorganized but I do want to add that the place was very busy. Keep in mind, this place is underground, so it gets pretty humid. I felt my makeup melting off every minute I was there. No one in my group particularly enjoyed their food and drinks except for their spicy garlic bread balls, they were AMAZING. If I'm ever in the area, I might just stop in and order that and grab a picture under the Snoop Dog photo. I might not have had the best experience but it's an experience nonetheless . Since there's not much of a night life scene in Chandler, I would still recommend giving this place a chance. Drinks were served in small glasses so you think you are getting a full size drink for an outrageous price. Mine was definitely watered down, as well. We arrived for a 74th birthday party in 20's costumes and the entry instructions were clear - unmarked entry, knock twice, then say you're there for the giggle water (as the passcode phrase). Unfortunately, none of that happened. We got to the door and knocked twice but no one answered so we opened it and instead of the hostess asking us for the passcode phrase, she just pointed to the party area. Very disappointing. It would have been a fun start to the evening. Champagne birthday toast was served in plastic 'glasses' so they wouldn't have to be washed. We asked for glass but host said they didn't have enough to serve 20 people. The food came from the pizza place (Crust) above the speakeasy and it just okay. Crust was a good description as there was not much in the way of toppings. Discovered they serve food from "The Crust" restaurant upstairs and they have a great Happy Hour. Our server was very knowledgeable about the cocktail menu and was able to explain how each one tasted. read more

Very very cool idea. First the cons: it's very busy and packed in a small tight space. It's hot and stuffy inside and not a lot of room. It's hard to order it's so loud in there. Service is a little slow but with how busy and cramped it was, it's not a Suprise. Also could use a good scrubbing down there. The pros: the bartenders are very friendly, helpful and fun. The drinks are delicious and freshly hand made. The idea of the speak easy is fun and creative. It's not over the top expensive, it's reasonably priced. Such a great bar. The bartender asked what I was into and I said citrus, absinthe flavor and whatever else they felt like. My drink came out with rum, absinthe, lime, basil, a couple of other ingredients and was 100% delicious. Our group spent about an hour at the bar cracking jokes, laughing, chatting and having an otherwise wonderful time. The bar staff takes pride in crafting tasty beverages here. If this space wasn't a 40 minute drive, you bet I'd be back more often than the two or three times I have been in the past 10 years. We had the best restaurant experience tonight that we've had in a very long time. Jocelyn was kind, knowledgeable and had great suggestions. To begin with, we're not drinkers and we didn't see any non-alcoholic mocktails on the drink menu. When we inquired she said, would you like tropical, fruity, spicy, sour... then she asked the bartender to make us something good. The results were perfect! We ordered calamari, which was light and crispy, plus bruschetta. They have 5 different flavors of bruschetta, and you get 3 thick slices of rustic bread split in half (therefore 6 pieces), which you can mix and match! We picked artichoke & feta, mushrooms & truffle oil, mascarpone & fig. All were delicious but fig was my fave, hands down. The hubby loves truffle and I don't, so I can't comment on that option. We ordered too much food, because suddenly there was a pizza and a calzone on the table that we didn't have room for! When I had asked Jocelyn for help with ordering, she gushed about loving the veggie calzone. How could I not choose that? We also brought home a Long Island Pizza, which was too good even though we only had one piece each! Finally, the atmosphere is speak-easy-ish, it's kind of hard to find the basement entrance even. This hidden gem sits below an Italian restaurant (whom in my opinion had the better drinks) was really cool and surprisingly eclectic. Get reservations, we ended up having drinks at the Italian restaurant while we waited to get in for almost 45 minutes. It was worth the wait because I learned that the Italian restaurant also supplied the food so we knew what to order from sitting at the bar and looking at everyone's food. It's a "speakeasy" mainly a fancy word. It's a bar. I had the pornstar @$12, my friends had the blackberry mule @$10, and the fairy @$12. Prices range from $10 -$16 per drink. Our drinks were handcrafted and delicious. Get on the wifi before you walk in. It's a bunker in there. No cell service, and they make you confirm your email address to log into the wifi. (Which is why you have to stand out side the place to make the connection. ) The experience is great. Prices are high but fair for the neighborhood and superficial inflation we are in. But sadly, neither food nor drinks were as good as the past. Drinks were badly balanced- the rattlesnake too sour and clover club way too sweet. The chanhattan is usually a safe bet, but had an odd off taste to it. We ordered our usual faves for dinner- the chopped salad was good but missing the promised artichoke hearts. Little Nicky and Grandma's pizza both had good flavor, but arrived at the table cold- like they had been out of the oven way too long before servers picked them up. Disappointed. Seriously, my friend and I had about 9 different cocktails between the two of us and there was not a disappointment in the bunch! The service and staff here are incredible as well! They know their stuff! One of the bartenders, who was just magical, even made a mockup of a "bartender's roulette" choice based on my friend's and my booze preference and let us sample before they went all in to finish the cocktail. It was perfection! They can also tell you great anecdotes about the cocktails and great history of the cocktails themselves and behind some of the spirits in said cocktails!
