The first thing you notice about the place is that its always clean. Even at its busiest, this place is Clean. Unlike other places on campus where you always find dirty tables, dim lighting, and shady looking spots on the counters. If you come in early, you can find a seat, however, forget about eating inside, or on any of the outside tables from 10:30-2, the place is PACKED and loud, so you're probably better off ordering to go. The service is very slow, both during lunch rush hour and throughout the day. Not sure what they do back there, but a pizza can take as long as 10-15 minutes to be ready. Want some fries? Another 10 minutes. The place is serviced by students, so be ready to see some frowns and blank faces while ordering, if they blink, that means they probably heard your order, if you get your receipt you're in business! The only good one there is the manager, things usually move a lot quicker when he's tending the counter. The place has two drink options: medium and small, so be ready to keep walking back for refills (which are free and self-served). The pizza is a bit overpriced, 4 bucks for a personal 6inch , one dollar more will buy you a combo (salad + drink). The fries savoriness varies with the weather, soggy one day crispy the next day. They have a cold counter with food items such as: cake, chips, pre-made sandwiches, etc. The only items I really like are their club sandwiches, which are 5 dollars, alone, extra for a combo. They're usually satisfying, but I swear they use leftover bread because i've gotten several bread varieties in the past. Oh! There's also good internet access, so you can browse and eat. Overall, if you're in lower campus, its much more convenient than the Nugget, UDP and the USU. and definitely much cheaper than the Chartroom. Quite frankly, if you're regularly in this area of lower campus, you don't have many options. So unless this place was a total dump, I highly doubt anyone would go out of their way to go elsewhere (especially if crunched for time). But it's not a dump at all, in fact, it's pretty decent for a student-government run campus eatery. Typical fare (burgers, salads, sandwiches, pizza), okay prices, clean environment, seating both indoors and out. I have a part-time job in the building next door, so I'm here fairly often. The Outpost Grill is located right next to the engineering buildings at Cal State Long Beach. Because the engineering buildings are so far away from the rest of campus (or maybe not that far - just too far for a lazy person like me), The Outpost is extremely convenient. That's my number one favorite thing about it. The Nugget is the other similar alternative on campus, and in my opinion, has better food and portions. However, The Outpost trumps The Nugget in every other way. There are both indoor and outdoor seating areas, the dining room is clean, it's spacious, and it has lots and lots of windows, so it's nice and bright. I love sitting at the high tables (makes me feel taller) and just hanging out with my laptop, eating and what not, in between classes. They also open fairly early in the morning and have a full breakfast menu. Just a note: it can get pretty busy during peak times (not nearly as busy as The Nugget) so finding a table can sometimes be a bit tough. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a table to open up, though. I just walk around looking sad with my food in my hand, and usually someone who was just wasting table space gets up and leaves. Just kidding. Not. The LB Burrito is my personal favorite to get on the menu and it's on the all day breakfast menu now. My friends and I find ourselves hanging out here all the time during class gaps. The Price - Overpriced The Environment - Extremely convenient if you're in the lower campus area closer to parking lot 11 - Spacious, with indoor and outdoor seating - Connected to a convenience store for your on-the-go snacks, beverages, and scrantrons/blue books (we all know how crappy it felt when we forgot this and had to travel to upper campus just to buy one, especially for an 8am class) - Well ventilated, A/C, and 2 flat screens To sum it up, it's pretty great to come here to relax, study and take a break...NOT for eating. read more

Why is this place so bad while the nugget is so good? How hard is it to prepare a breakfast where your eggs are not drowning in syrup? I asked them to fix it and the genius in the kitchen just put the syrupy eggs on a new plate. It sucks that all my classes are in the engineering building and it's a long walk to the nugget, but it's worth the walk. Last time I ate here was a year ago. I ordered a personal pizza and it came out with ingredients on half the pizza and they pretended it was normal. Go to the nugget instead of this place. You won't be disappointed. Patty melt, on rye bread. Thats my standard over here. With seasoned fries on the days I'm feeling adventurous or hungry. As a design major, all I have to do is mosey across the street to get to the Outpost... and now that it has been completely remodeled, it looks SO MUCH better than the old Outpost that use to be here. It is now so much more roomy, has plenty more seating, and multiple TVs to catch up with the latest sports/weather/news. I absolutely love their little "sauce bar-esque" area, where you can mix and match your own flavoring with what they have availible for your own pleasurable needs. Not the best sauce selection, but our standard ketchup, mayo, hot sauce, mustard is available, along with radish and barbque sauce. I AVOID this place like the black plauge during the lunch rush hour, there is usually an INSANE amount of people, due to the fact that there really are NO options for food around lower campus... and I love the fact that if the line is too long, I can always just walk across to the convinence store next door to grab a cold sandwitch or some other type of food to eat. So far Ive only tried the Philly cheese steak, the chicken wrap, the chili dog and the Chicago dog here and they're all pretty good. And I must admit compared to the Nugget on CSULB campus this place is a lot better for price and quantity of food here. The service is great here but the seating is terrible, people can be very selfish here and for a four seater table one person will be sitting there usually messing around with there phone. I wish they would some how correct this problem but what really can you do? nothing really. Im just so glad I had the chance to finally try this place, its always on the far reaches of the campus. Tip: although some of the outdoor tables are availble makes sure to get one underneath the edge of the roof. I usually get a turkey burger from here but today I decided to try something on the value menu which was the pretzels and cheese. Did not think they could go wrong with pretzels but they did. My pretzels had at least two table spoons of salt on them and the cheese is disgusting . Would avoid anything on the value menu if they treat these items like such. read more

YUMMY. Chicken tenders combo, LB burrito with salsa on the side, turkey burger combo, and breakfast ranchero bowl are all tried and true. The latter, a huevo estrelleda over refried beans and tots, is not available at the Nugget. LB burritos are sometimes inconsistent in the manner that they are prepared, it depends on who's the chef that day, but on average they are muy delicious-frankly, the best breakfast burrito I've ever had! Make sure your LB burrito has tots because they recently tried to replace the tots with breakfast potatoes and it's alright. Friends and I have all agreed that the tenders are more delicious when bought from the Nugget. If you have a chance, buy the freshly baked cookies from the convenience store next to the library. As I work right across the street, I'm a fairly frequent customer. I've always received great customer service, and their food is good. I'm a big fan of their breakfast burrito (for breakfast) and the BBQ burger (for lunch). The biggest bummer for those of us on campus year-round, is that they close so early during the Summer and Winter... Best place on all of CSULB to get a bite to eat. Good food and a great vibe. Revamped the menu from last year and it has even more choices to pick from. Pete's BBQ cheese burger with season fries is my personal favorite but you can never go wrong with the sweet potato fries either. But nothing beats showing up to the Outpost after your Thursday classes are through and grabbing a fresh brew. Staff is awesome and management really puts in the effort make this place great. One time I showed up during the peak of the lunch rush. At-least 150+ were in the building and after placing my order I was able to grab a seat ( which can sometimes be difficult as there is a big seating area but during lunch it does get crowded). Usually orders are called through the speaker system but they weren't working that day. Food orders were called out by cashiers which was working out pretty well but after waiting 30min I still had not been called. I talked to the manager Salvador and he sincerely apologized for making me wait. He ran back to the kitchen, yelled out my order to the chefs, and gave me a free order of large fries with my burger. He valued my service and I really felt that he appreciated my business so I really do enjoy going here. This is the only place I eat on campus and since I'm always in the ECS and VEC it is super convenient to walk over and eat a good meal. I recommend anyone on campus to eat here over The Nugget because it has better seating, more personal service, and the food is MUCH better here too. read more

The Outpost is the ONLY place to get decent food down at lower campus. I came in today because I was dying of hunger. Ordered a veggie tuscany wrap and paid a little extra for chicken. It took a little longer than usual for the food which was understandable because its the first week of school. When my order finally finished, I noticed that it was in a spinach wrap instead of the wheat wrap that I ordered. So i asked the girl at the counter about it to double check if it was mine. She asked the cooks in the back and apparently they messed up. No big deal. I offered to just take the order so the food doesn't go to waste but they insisted on making a new one. So I guess I'll wait another 10 minutes for it.. When it finally came out again, it was missing the chips that comes with the wraps. The manager made up some BS excuse about how the new wraps don't come with chips.. Errr... okay... Then why is it listed in the menu that it does....? Whatever. I was hungry and just wanted some food in me. Sat down, took a bite of the wrap and realized that there was no chicken in it.. Honestly, I normally wouldn't care but I paid nearly $2 extra just to have some skimpy meat in my wrap (and boy was that wrap skimpy). So I made another trip to the counter and asked them if they can just give me my $2 back or maybe give me those skimpy salads they give out as sides. They ended up switching my wheat wrap with no chicken for the spinach wrap with chicken that they left on the side... -____-' The girls behind the counter were nice, its just that manager of theirs.. As an engineering major, I am here far more often than the Nugget (as a senior anyways). I still prefer the Nugget over this spot, but I do greatly appreciate the breakfast burrito and its salsa here. They have some pretty good sandwiches and flatbread pizzas. Solid beer selection for "dry" campus pub, but prices don't really reflect university students' income for something that definitely helps calm the nerves. As far as wait times go for food - expect 5 mins if it's slow, or 10-12 if it's busy. The better of the two places to eat at csulb that serves alcohol. Plenty of seats and tvs playing sports. The best way to beat the line is to get the tapingo app and order through that from your seat and then when it's ready they'll call your name. One of the best deals here to eat is the chicken tenders and seasoned fries. Also the chicken tenders here are bigger than at the nugget. If your not up for that try the bbq ranch quesadilla. The beer options are great. Even though there's not a big variety the few they have are very good in my opinion the 805 and the dos equis amber. But expect to spend over $5 per beer and food. I am giving 2 stars for this establishment, only because of the poor workers who work here, otherwise, i would have left 0. I use yelp to find food places in the area, but never have I wanted to sign up to write a review until now. This is my first(and last) time visiting Outpost grill. Knowing it was lunch time, and that it would be busy, my friend and I opened the doors to a very long line of people. They have music and a couple TV's inside, its well lit, and clean, but the line was moving VERY slowly. They only had one cashier, who would take an order, get whatever drink was needed, grab food from that kitchen window, call out a name and take another order. The cashier was doing 3 peoples jobs at once. Where are the other workers in this place? Especially at lunch? An older guy came out, and started talking to the cashier about something and they stopped taking orders for a couple minutes while they did something on the computer. I guess there are more important things than waiting on customers paying money. The older guy(who I found out later was the manager) called out some names, ran back to the kitchen, (I could hear him yelling something to the cooks), and then came back out and stood there until an order came out of the window. After 20 minutes in line, I finally got to order. The cashier looked tired and stressed, yet still had a smile on his face, apologized for the wait and offered me a free drink. The food was fine, I ordered a BBQ chicken pizza, and it was very good. My friend ordered the BLAT wrap(i think thats what its called). I will say that I couldn't believe the manager though. As he called my friends name we went to go pick up her food and he requested her name and what she ordered. She told him her name, but couldn't remember the wrap she had ordered. He told her "If it was you who ordered food, you should know what you ordered." Excuse me? We just waited a half hour to eat, and you're going to speak to us like that? It was embarrassing. It's no wonder you have no employees. And I feel bad for the ones you do have. I would have rather of waited for the cashier to eventually get me food and not disrespect my friend and I in front of 50 people. Kudos to the cashier and cooks. I work at CSULB and started eating here over the summer because we moved into the SSPA building which is right next door. The food quality over the summer months, when not as busy, was decent, but now that the semester is in full swing, the food quality has gone WAY downhill, to the point of me not eating here any longer. I used to like their veggie burger when done properly but it is very touch and go now. Today I ordered one and when I flipped the bun over to take out the horrible wilted lettuce, there was mayo ALL over the bottom bun...like someone had grabbed it and threw it in the paper with mayo all over their hands...btw, the veggie burger does not come mayo, so it was horribly gross. I threw the whole thing away. Also, when they are in a hurry, the patty is not done well. I went to the Outpost Grill last Monday and ordered some food and I didn't like it but I said I will give it another chance. So today I ordered a Turkey California with lettuce, tomatoes, avocado and fries and it was so delicious. I asked the cashier who cooked my food and they said someone name Richard and the cook looked up. Thank you Richard, it was great. You can tell the food was made from the heart and took time. I've been to the outpost many times, but never ordered food. Today's first time ordering was rather pleasant and the food wasn't as bad as I thought it might turn out. When you first enter the outpost, the place is usually packed with people and it might be a little hard to find seats. And horray for the air conditioner! Jennelyn (I beleive) was the one helping me at the cashier and she had a very positive vibe about her. She was very friendly, which made my ordering so much more enjoyable. I ordered an LA dog combo and opted out of my fries for some sweet potato fries. The LA dog came wraped with bacon with tomatoes and mustard on top. I wish the hot dog would be more authentic with street hotdogs with jalapeno and onion! Overall the hotdog was okay, but I really liked the sweet potato fries. There's something about the texture that I really like! I'll be coming here often in the future since my class is in the building next door. read more

After the many years studying here at CSULB and coming to the Outpost, I'm finally coming around to this review! There's many different options here which are pretty similar if not the same options as you get up at the Nugget. Their food selection is extensive. Ranging from burgers to salads, fountain drinks to beer, and breakfast burritos to snacks. I normally grab the breakfast burrito with sausages if I crawl into here in the mornings or I get the chicken tenders with fries for lunch. I've never had a problem here other than finding a table during rush hours. Coming here year after year, everything still stays the same which I don't mind. The Outpost is located at lower campus which is nice since you don't have to walk up campus to the Nugget if you want something to grub on. This place offers a nice change of options to what you can eat since everything else is basically fast food. The reason the Outpost isn't getting higher than a 3 star from me is simply because there isn't a wow factor. It's just conveniently located and the food is not bad. read more

Only place I regularly eat on campus because I spend most of my time in the DESN building next door. Their cheeseburger is really good, usually what I order. Reasonable prices too, I believe you don't pay tax here if you show CSULB ID which is nice. Service is good and usually quite fast aside from the lunch hour rush during regular semester. I also like the fish tacos really tasty. I only gave them 4 stars because they don't have that many healthy options on menu, and every time I order anything from breakfast menu its just way too greasy. They also serve some craft draft beers here and a few bottled brands. But usually don't order the beer because its overpriced. read more

This is probably my first and last time I'm going to order from this place. I came in wanting two breakfast burritos to bring home. The girl that helped me was very friendly and I appreciated that. However, when I got my food, I saw that my two breakfast burritos were merely wrapped in paper and salsa on the side in uncovered paper cups (not to-go cups that are covered like at other places). When I explained that my order was to-go, the man that gave me the burritos told me "this IS a to go order; we just wrap them in paper". What's the difference between this and a for-here order? When I asked for a bag, he gave me a brown paper bag and walked away. I thought that this dainty paper bag was probably going to rip on my way to my car. Surely enough, the bag ripped as soon as I got into my car, spilling the contents of the bag everywhere. I work in food service so I know what being courteous to customers is...and this was the opposite! Outpost Grill, you have no excuse not having to-go boxes or to-go cups for sauces because I am aware of other restaurants on campus with these kind of options.
