My poor Owl cafe is now horrific I'm so sad... My sister and I flew into ABQ looking to move back home. We were so excited to eat at the owl again! Two Mexican combo plates a sampler of beans, guacamole and queso later I was disgusted. ;) CANNED QUESO IN NEW MEXICO Please God no. The sampler of beans were tastless and over cooked. The combo plates had the nastiest enchilada I've had in 60 years plus the taco tasted like grease and get rid of " shamrock" foods pre made taco shells. COME ON Cook the food!! You know it's crap. Us two girls that don't eat much paid OVER $80!! All my friends in ABQ told me later told me it had turned so nasty after covid and they were saddened by it. We feel totally ripped off and disgusted. The food is horrible. We ordered a Veggie Burger and Tuna Melt with fries. Veggie burger is straight out of the freezer, over cooked and greasy. The "tuna" in the tuna melt was more like a brown sludge. Hey, OWNER: I dare you to eat your tuna melt and feel good about it after. I'll even buy it for you. We ate half and no matter just how hungry we were, couldn't do the second half of this disgusting tuna sandwich. Fries were greasy , soggy from frozen. $36.00 including a generous tip. It surprises me when a waitress sees a half eaten plate and doesn't ask "if everything was ok", nor does the cashier. Guess they already know, it's crappy food and why hear from another pissed off, disappointed customer? I've gone for breakfast twice. Great staff. Love the owl count they have for the kids to occupy them. Food servings are ginormous so you need a take home box. I was a little surprised to have an omelette the first time with huge chunked of potato mixed in with the egg. The next time, I chose a little differently so that didn't happen again. I would give The Owl Cafe 10 stars if I could!! Truly!! My husband and I live in Albuquerque and California. Visiting a month at a time in Albuquerque. We have passed the restaurant many times and today decided to stop in for lunch. We saw the parking lot was full, which is always a great sign. Are we ever so pleased we stopped by!! We were greeted very warmly by Meg, our server. She did a fantastic job and made the whole meal enjoyable with her smile and humor. Meg answered all our questions about the dishes we were considering to get. The menu is extensive and all the dishes sounded amazing. The meals that we selected were extremely tasty! I opted to get the Huevos Rancheros with the red & green chile on the side. Posole that we ordered, as well, was delicious! Just the right amount of red chili and pork. Towards the end of our meal we had a very nice gentleman come by our table and asked how everything was. Come to find out he's the owner named Ski. ;) We had a very nice conversation with Ski and we told him how much we enjoyed our dining experience and look forward to coming back. He is a very nice and down to earth gentleman. A hands on owner that enjoys his restaurant and his customers! Ski & Meg thank you both so much for making a enjoyable afternoon dining out for David and myself! I really love this place the one time I was here before today. Today was bad. I know restaurants are struggling and we're in this pandemic and I really hate to leave anything negative but my daughter's silverware was crusted with old food today and mine were very spotty. The waitress was nice about it and brought us another setting but it threw off my appetite and we couldn't really stomach all the food. Also the bun was crusty and the burger fell apart not even halfway through it. The malt and shake were very good as was the deep fried bacon appetizer. I think they are doing a great job but the dishwasher messed it up for me today. Not hating but it was gross. Maybe they should do like every other restaurant I've been to during this pandemic and give out disposable plastic ware. read more

Very cool building with a great atmosphere. Retro jukeboxes at the table that can control the songs on the radio is a very nice touch. I got a New Mexico Hot Dog and it was delicious! I wasn't expected it to be such a large portion too! Nice and clean area and they also have special milkshakes. I got a butterscotch coffee shake on the way out and it was very delicious. The staff was also very patient with me as my friends had their orders ready, but I was too distracted going through the jukebox to look at the menu in a timely fashion. A basic diner. They got my order wrong then, in fixing it, got it wrong again. I had ordered biscuits and gravy, gravy on the side, with sausage and hashbrowns well done. As soon as she set the first plate down, she realized the gravy was on everything and took it without me saying anything, but when she brought the replacement, the hashbrowns were barely cooked (I didn't ask her to fix it because I didn't want to make a fuss - they were trying). There is a juke box at every table and several along the counters. We stopped for breakfast. I had Huevos Rancheros and my wife had Huevos Mexicanos. Both meals were good. Hmm I've got mixed feelings about this place... good and bad.. It's been here for a very long time and the decor is amazing. You really feel like you've taken a trip back to the past! The staff is very friendly and there is hardly ever a wait time. My in-laws love coming to this place. Now to explain the 3stars... every time I've been here its led to serious indigestion. Let me clarify.. The food is GOOD. It really is, its flavorful and yummy. However.... It's so greasy, GREASY, in my experience each of the 3 times I've been here thats been the case. It may have to do with the fact that I don't cook with much oil and so my stomach isn't used to it but because of that I'm not a fan. Visited twice while in ABQ. First time was a busy Sunday morning, waited about 10 minutes for a table for 2. Food was delicious! I had French toast - it was cooked perfectly, with scrambled egg and bacon - both cooked perfectly as well! A few days later, our second visit, I ordered the same thing again - why chance not liking what I order? Well - it wasn't nearly as good as the first visit. We got sat right away, wasn't busy at all, but my French toast was burnt. There was no way I was going to eat it, so I asked if they would remake it. Well, they did. But it wasn't much better the second time. Bacon was a little undercooked. One of my biggest pet peeves with restaurants is the inconsistency of food based on busy v. slow, and of course the cooks. It's a simple dish, it should be made the same way every time. Overall, definitely worth visiting, but food was definitely better on the busy weekend v. a slow weekday. The best thing to happen to New Mexico. After driving forever, no hotels anywhere from here to Texas we decided to stop for a pick me up. They were closing soon, but so graciously sat five of us with a smile. The place was packed at close to 10pm so we knew it would be awesome. After doing our drink order we were brought complimentary beans with green Chile and crackers. Being from AZ I'd never seen anything like this, but oh man I'm going to have to figure this out because I need this snack in my life! So flavorful and spicy. Not too hot to not enjoy, but enough to kick to want more and more. After looking over the menu we orders the owlragious nachos for an appetizer. So huge and again so freaking good! Only downside we couldn't eat them all or we'd never finish our dinner. I ordered the green Chile burger which was spicy and delicious, perfectly cooked and fries. So filling. My daughter had the owlchiladas which of course I had to taste. Perfection; great spice, cheese and chicken combo. Best open enchilada ever. My boys had chicken fried steak and roast beef dinner they loved it as well except they did say the didn't care so much for the mashed potatoes...but they ate them all lol.
