My partner has been vegan for just shy of 15 years, so when we finished climbing at Hoosier Heights Bloomington I figured we should stop in. We've been 4 or 5 times now. It's amazing! Every thing on the menu can be made/is vegan. Their cashew queso is wonderful and a great way to start the meal. There is also a nice craft beer selection. I really liked their ranch chik'n wrap and my partner's favorites include the BBQ sandwich, the Rueben, and the jerk tofu tacos. Their vegan cupcakes are phenomenal and are recommended to everyone! What I enjoy about Bloomington is the variety of restaurants it has to offer for its residents. We not only have a collection of international cuisine available on 4th street, but we also pride ourselves on supporting local businesses. However, it been hard to find a restaurant that offer vegan and vegetarian friendly options without only eating a salad and fries from their menu. I heard positive reviews about The Owlery through friends but didn't have an opportunity to go until my brother suggested The Owlery for our birthday dinner. I was excited because they designed their menu around vegan/vegetarian comfort food and it did not disappoint! The place is not only warm and inviting, but also has an indie aesthetic when you walk in. The space is small, cozy, comforting, and filled with several owl trinkets to match the theme. I found the trinkets to be Snapchat and Instagram worthy, so I posted a birthday picture to show off the place to my friends! The server was also friendly and seated us right away with our menus. I was surprised to see that almost all the menu items were either vegan and/or vegetarian! This was a first to me because I often have one meal I pick when I go to certain restaurants. I noticed honey is in some of their menu items, but it is also the only animal product they use. I also liked the ability to substitute vegan cheese as an alternative if you're vegan! The Owlery has all your traditional favorites, ranging from a B.L.T, Chicken Sandwich, and Fish and Chips! Don't let the items fool you for they were either substituted with tofu or tempeh as a meat alternative. I ordered the Grilled Tempeh, which also included black beans, shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, and a side of salsa. I not only felt good about what I ate, but the Grilled Tempeh felt like I was eating authentic, homemade Mexican food. I was also able to enjoy a cup of Brown County Coffee, a local favorite, with free refills! It was also our birthday, so we couldn't miss having dessert! We let our server know and she was happy to point out our options. It was fitting that The Owlery would have slices of funfetti cake that was also vegan friendly. She even went out of her way to get a box, so we could take the cake home to enjoy later. I wanted to give them another chance after a few bad experiences since the pandemic when they changed owners. There were several times we couldn't order from them because they were out of our old favorites or we knew not to order something because it wouldn't be the same. Another time my fries had what was the texture of sand in them. When I complained they denied it was sand and blamed it on their fryer oil. No offer of a refund or replacement even when they seem to know their oil is full of sand like gross stuff. They're the only meat free restaurant in Bloomington so I really wanted to love them again but when I saw the prices it was a no for me. I get it that food prices are up etc...but I can't afford to buy from them again, especially when they've consistently been such a disappointment. Sorry to see what they've become because I doubt they'll survive in the competitive restaurant industry. The Owlery was never the best veg place to eat, but we had a couple items we really loved like the tofu appetizer with coconut on it and peanut sauce, the roasted veg. salad, peanut rice bowl and a couple others. This is a great place for anyone...veggie or non-veg. They have stuff that doesn't sound too experimental and I can get my non-veg friends to love. Also, they typically have a $3 pint of some local brew. All items can be made vegan. That's a huge perk. Some come vegetarian (and you may have thought it was vegan) so do clarify as needed. I personally love the BLT with fried green tomatoes and avocado. Its a summertime special to add the fried green tomato as they try to serve seasonally Its a great low key environment. From hipsters to courthouse workers that work across the street frequent this establishment. Plenty of healthy options and also delicious vegan desserts. I've eaten at The Owlery with a Vegan friend four times in the past two years. Between the two of us we have eaten most of the main courses, several of the lunch offers, and a few of the appetizers. (The last time it was the cashew cheese and chips appetizer and cashew should never be mentioned in that description, nor should cheese. Call it bean dip). Although we hoped for a better experience neither of us wants to go back. We've seen and eaten enough. Inconsistent quality of food, unless it's bad. Earlier this year we had the dinner menu to choose from and my friend had the Southern Plate. BBQ Seitan, collards, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a cornbread cupcake. Potatoes and cornbread were good, she said. I sampled the Seitan and thought it was ok. Last time we were there I ordered the same thing. My Seitan had the acrid, overly-seasoned taste you get when you dump too much pepper into something and don't care. I can eat hot chilis but I couldn't eat that, and it was supposed to be the same thing we ordered the time before. The collard greens also, over-salted and too much vinegar. I could eat the cornbread and the mashed potatoes, pretty good, but that's not a meal. Our server asked if everything was ok and turned to leave and I called her back. No, I can't eat this, I said. She said she would get a substitute for the Seitan and offered me tofu chicken or grilled tempeh. I thought to myself, Please, not the tofu chicken! because I've had the tofu fish and it's just tofu with the sort of breading you'd put on fish. The chicken can't be much different. I thought tempeh would be good, because I like tempeh. I got a plate of four planks of tempeh grilled sometime in the past, with no seasoning (not even salt) and no sauce. It was warm. I choked down a couple of pieces because I was hungry. I could have put mustard or ketchup on it from the table's condiment array but I didn't think that would help. If they'd given me 15 minutes in their kitchen I could have made something good with that tempeh, but as I got it, it was just raw materials. My overall impression of The Owlery's food is that the servers have no confidence in it and the cooks have no clue. It's as though the restaurant is owned and operated by people who are not Vegan nor vegetarian yet think there's a market for such things. So they asked themselves, What do these people eat? and decided it was tempeh and tofu disguised as meat. They'd never eat it themselves so they don't know that tofu has zero flavor on its own or that tempeh by itself is bitter and chalky and the grill marks taste like burned beans. Because they are burned beans. Shortage of veggies at this Vegan/Vegetarian restaurant is shameful. It's not hard to cook better than this. I do it every day. Their cornbread is good, but I make way better cornbread. Better mashed potatoes, too. I give them two stars because there is so much room for improvement and it would be nice to have a good restaurant of this sort in Bloomington. Last thing I have to say: Change the oil in your freaking deep fryer more often, please. read more

I first came here years ago, when I first began a journey in plant-based life. This place rocks. The menu has everything from vegan queso to vegan fried chicken, and I've never had a bad meal. I usually come with my meat-eating friends, and they've always been surprised at how tasty everything is. As others have said, the space is usually crowded, but I like it--it's lively. Some of my personal favorite things here include the BBQ sub (piled SUPER high with cole slaw--amazing) and the Southern plate (oh my goodness. The seasoning in the potatoes is incredible. The corn bread is sweet enough for dessert, but even if it is heresy to the South, I enjoy it. Eat it as a dessert). A couple of years ago, I lived in Canada, and was a meat-eater. I loved poutine -- fries smothered in brown beef gravy and cheese curds. What is a non-meat-eater living in Indiana to do? Where can I get good poutine? Answer: The Owlery in Bloomington! Their poutine is phenomenal, and the portion is huge. The vegan gravy is awesome, and you can choose to top it with dairy or non-dairy cheese. I've only visited Bloomington twice, and I went to The Owlery each time. The food is fantastic with a wide range of options, including those that involve meat subs (like tofu or seitan) and those that are purely veggie/grain/legume based. Even meat eaters will find something to enjoy here! They also have SUPER reasonable prices on local craft beer (as well as cans of PBR for $1. Ah, college towns!) It's worth the pilgrimage if you're a vegan especially, but definitely worth a visit for anyone in town. Keep in mind that the restaurant is quite small, so (especially if you're with a big group) you may want to arrive early if you go on a busy night. read more

Good food, Horrible Service. The food is good - lots of vegan options and most are hearty portions. But the service is lacking. The staff are a bunch of hipsters who think they are too cool to treat people with respect. Waitstaff rarely come back to fill waters, even when there are only a handful of people in the dining room. There are no personalities here, just people with blank faces who won't even look you in the eye. What's the use in having a great menu, if you don't have a great staff to compliment it? I'm in Bloomington for business and my coworker is Vegan, so we thought we'd give this a try. For a meat lover, they have really good food! I had the peanut vegetable bowl with tofu. I put the peanut sauce on the side, which was a good choice. The vegetables were sautéed/grilled perfectly with enough flavor without the sauce. The tofu was similar to croutons; it was grilled on the outside, but yet not too crunchy. It was delicious! I'm planning to go back and try more vegan food! Also, my coworker who is Vegan loved it. The service was attentive, they were knowledgeable in the menu items and were helpful since it was our first time there. From someone who considers cheese as a main food group it is incredible how similar the vegan substitute is. Great tacos and entrees. They have a decent craft beer list. Something for everyone. As a vegan in Bloomington I love this place and my non vegan friends love it too! The only reason I won't give it 5 stars is because of the service. The service is very inconsistent between servers and some servers act as though we are an inconvenience when we ask for something (makes me prefer takeout). The food makes it worth it, my favorites are the Coconut Macadamia Tofu, Fish Tacos, and the Quesadilla. I really wish they kept the Chicken Fingers around on the menu. Went for Sunday brunch and so did a lot of other people! The place was packed! Had a short wait, maybe 15 minutes, for a table. But, it's obvious they could easily use a bigger place. Everything on the menu sounds good with the exception of eggs. I had the grilled vegetable salad and my son had the tofu Benedict. I also ordered a side of home fries which were fried redskin potatoes. Portions were generous. We pretty much cleaned our plates. I just wished they didn't use so much oil. I was really excited to eat here, and my friends and I agreed that we were not disappointed. One friend, a former Bloomingtonian, was stoked about the Upland Brewery beer. I was excited about many things: -vegan eats. -supporting an awesome restaurant that appears to be owned/staffed by rad people in many bands I very much enjoy. -great atmosphere, adorable and clean. -the music playing. probably someone's iPod. It was an awesomely amusing mix. Carrie Nations ,Gin Blossoms, Weakerthans, Defiance Ohio, the Cranberries, all together? I say amusing but I can't pretend I don't love that "Hey Jealousy" song and that Cranberries song from My So-Called Life. Oh yeah, food. I had the "chicken" sandwich with buffalo sauce, my friend Aaron had the "chicken" sandwich with bbq sauce, and Alex had the "fish" sandwich. I will have to say that this place is cool! the food they serve is nice for people who would like to retain a completely vegan diet and enjoy things like biscuits and gravy or a piece of cake. Unfortunately, that is about all this place is good for. The environment is bland and not inviting or attractive. Someone who is involved in the restuarant industry will notice there is way to much empty floor space with no tables or chairs leaving unredeemed profit to walk out the door. Which means to the average consumer that they will have to wait a LOOOONNGGGG time to get a table. The girl at the front who seats people seems unable to perform her job in this role. We (me and my girlfriend) went at 11:30 on sunday for brunch. Laura said it would be an hour wait. I said "Ok, we'll go get coffee and come back in 45" she said "ok." We came back 40 mins later and she said they called our name and since we weren't there they gave our table to someone else. I said, thats fine, no problem can we have the next available two top. She was unapologetic or empathetic and said we now have to wait another hour to be sat. We went somewhere else. Roots on the square is a better option! read more
