The food is expensive, but the steaks (bone-in NY Strip for me) and chops (lamp for my wife) and service was very good. We sat inside and enjoyed the NY-style bar and a booth in the back. I was a little disappointed by the side dishes. Keep in mind that my benchmark is the original Smith & Wollensky's in NYC. The cream spinach was too creamy. The onion strings seemed to be all batter. I went to Palm last night for my 3rd anniversary. Atmosphere: I found a nice HAPPY ANNIVERSARY card waiting at our table with signatures from the staff. Nice personal touch. The booth material made me sweat a bit, it was a bit uncomfortable. We were seated in the back, which was fine. Service: Our server, Somchai, was entertaining and checked on us every 5 minutes or so. Plates were cleared very quickly after each course. He bagged the leftovers up for us. They also gave us a nice (singing) surprise with a complimentary dessert! Key Lime pie, it was delicious. Food: The traditional calamari was probably the best I've ever had. I'm trying not to hype it up too much, but the flavors were on point and it wasn't too salty. We shared the 36oz steak, super delicious. It came back a bit rare but Somchai quickly noticed and offered to take the rarer pieces back for a few more moments of cooking. I ordered the lobster truffle butter, but as Somchai mentioned when I ordered, I didn't need it, I should have listened. The lobster mac and cheese was, again, the best I have ever had. There was massive chunks of lobster and it had the right amount of cheese. The bits of bacon on top were the icing on the cake. Drink: The wine list is extensive, we opted for a $50 bottle of Pinot. We're more of beer folks so we didn't want to go all out and not even notice the beauty of the wine. It was fine. Granted for a steakhouse, the steak isn't all that great. You would think that might be a problem; however, I was completely enamored with this place!! When we first got there the host (later found out to be the manager Kurt) checked our coats and took our umbrellas for us. After we ordered we were eye-ing this bowl of huge pickles someone ordered and one of the waiters (not ours) offered the pickles to our table as well. What a treat! The Palm has a special salad, seafood and 9 oz filet mignon and dessert for $45.95. Although the special advertises as no substitutions whatsoever our waiter allowed us substitutions all over and we all shared so I can attest to quite a few of the menu options Appetizer: lobster bisque was absolutely amazing. I was surprised to see someone else said it was spicy because I don't do spice and didn't know it at all. It was pretty pureed - no chunks of lobster - but had such a great taste. The caesar salad w/ no anchoives, which is one of the actual options with the special, and the argula salad were both very good. On a side note, I was so happy the waiter checked w me whether I liked anchoives or not because I would not have known to order without. Entree: We all got the 9 oz filet mignon. Although some of us had quite large portions and others had smaller. Didn't think it was very consistent. I'm also not sure if the waiter confused the dishes or the chef just did not cook the meat as requested. I ordered med and it was red inside. My friend ordered med-well and felt it was far too cooked and another ordered med-rare and thought it was cooked more than mine. None of us are ones to complain and none of us were very impressed with the steak. None of us finished it and most of us asked for a sauce to try it with. The lobster on the other hand was to die for! Absolutely amazing!! It was very juicy and just perfect! One of the girls had a hair on hers which she noticed immediately. The waiter brought her a new one a minute later and comp'ed her glass of wine. Sides: mashed potatoes = awesome, asaparagus = dry, lacked taste, mushrooms (all different types) = perfectly seasoned and amazing, creamed spinach = sooo good!! Desserts: chocolate peanut butter pie = very strong taste of peanut butter which I love, but not very chocolatey, key lime pie = not a very big key lime pie fan but thought it was very good, creme brule = delicious, but have to admit I've had better On a side note that service was amazing. The manager even gave my friend the pin he was wearing because she complimented it! And for all those yelp-ers out there who wonder about the decor we got the full story from the manager.. it's a tradition that started back in the 20's when famous people would come to eat in NY they would pay for their meals by putting caricatures on the walls and now it's progressed into a fun little thing that even features batman and patrons who spend big bucks! read more

I was very dissapointed in my experience. Went with a group of friends on Friday night. My steak was extremely overcooked. I ordered medium - it came out well done, and the manager acknowledged as much. He offered to get a new one, but I didn't want to be eating after all of my friends. In the end, he took off my drinks, even though I said he didn't need to. The martinis had ice in them, the crabcake had no flavor. The desserts, however, were great. I love steakhouses, and enjoy good service. I was very dissapointed, and would probably not go back. Definitely not worth the reputation it has in this town. read more

Went to the Palm last night for diner and had a very nice experience. The restaurant has a distinct old school feel to it which is nice and the service was good. The server was polite and answered our questions. Our water was refilled constantly, a small but important detail on a warm day, and we received our bread basket very quickly. The steak was cooked very well and was quite good. My only real complaint, and hence the three start rating, is that nothing really stuck out. Everything was good but nothing was great, and for the prices that the Palm is charging something should stick out. I know that that is not much of complaint but it feels pretty important to me. I would definitely return to the Palm but I would rather go to other more memorable steakhouses instead. read more

Went to the Palm with 4 others. We were in DC to see an exhibition at the Corcoran Art Gallery and the Martin Luther King Monument. We arrive at 8:30 pm. We were shown to our table immediately. Three out of five ate mainly delicious vegetables. The other two had the surf and turf special with two lobster tails. All five diners were very happy with the food. The service is impeccable from the hostess to the wait staff. We loved the restaurant from the time we arrived until we left. We will return. read more

I don't eat here often. It's a "special occasion" restaurant with the price tag to match. But the food has been consistently fantastic, the service (yeah, Larry!) consistently attentive and flexible and the entire experience consistently top-notch. Certainly some of the best meals I have ever had have been out of The Palm. Yep, it costs you. But try the cheesecake. Or marvel at the Fred-Flintstone-sized and perfectly tender prime rib. Try the mushrooms. Ask for an oddball drink. Even for the price, I find it a big value. It's worth it. read more

Great atmosphere. Very good place to take clients to wine and dine. Have eaten here three times and have gotten the steak sandwich off the lunch menu. Runs around $20, but it is clearly worth it. I've been to the Palms in NY, Charlotte, and Atlanta and while this one wasn't my favorite, it was still a fantastic dining experience. Waiter was extremely friendly and didn't pressure us with up-sales. I tried one of the classic Italian dishes (chicken parm) for the first time while my girlfriend got the steak and as usual we were stuffed before we were halfway through. Came for lunch with my office a couple of weeks ago. It was ok. I ordered the 3 course lunch they offer and was disappointed. I chose as my protein the filet medallions and ordered them med rare. I had a really negative experience booking a reservation online and changing the name under which the reservation was under. After booking the reservation online, calling to confirm that the reservation was made and changing the name - I thought that everything was set. The party showed up for the reservation and they were informed that there was no reservation under that name. I called back once this incident occurred and asked how I should approach modifying my request in the future since calling did not work. The person on the phone was very very rude! Not a bad restaurant, but to be honest, for the price you pay, I've had better meals elsewhere. The salmon I had tonight was very good, but nothing special about the presentation nor the 'side' which was a thumb bowl with some cut up small veggies, two forks worth. Let me get right to it: both my friend with whom I dined and I agree that The Palm serves the best lobster we've ever had. Everything was delicious, but the lobster was just amazing, amazing, amazing. I have to also mention the softshell crab, which was prepared perfectly to produce the most thrilling flavor and consistency. I could have eaten like three of them. Seriously. Five stars for the food alone. Service was flawless. Crowd was fun and typically Washington: well put-together, elegant, and including a few famous t.v. personnalities who shall remain nameless. Décor understated and pleasant. Wine list great (though do try one of their signature cocktails to start out with: yum!) Prices are not low, but definitely worth it. Loved it. I always eat at the palms all over the north east. My party had salmon(excellent) and two 49.95 steak specials which were very good and 2 of the 3 nights we ate there were excellent : taste, quality and cooked to perfection. The manger Jeff was excellent and very helpful with arrangements. The waiter Michael was also top shelf. The Buffalo mozzarella is the BEST I have ever tasted at any restaurant, I was told it is flown in from Italy twice weekly, and the tomato's are huge and tasty. Also the veal parmasian is the best of any i have ever had,pounded thin with delicious cheese glazed and sciziling, a must try. the $49.95 special also includes a salad and desert, which makes this a great value. The raisin bread with sweet butter is outstanding. Also the 4 cheese potatoes are outstanding, but can only have every other visit ! Great Job, I highly recomend. read more

They give you a LOT of food. The 5-lb lobster is enough for at least 3 people to share. I ordered the 3-lb and it was a lot for me...along with the sides. Like any steakhouse, everything is dripping with butter. Fattening but tasty. The creme brulee is not good. I've had better elsewhere. Service is good and quick. Be prepared to be packed in like sardines. Tables are tight and you will meet people at neighboring tables. All in all, an ok restaurant. read more

I recently went to this restaurant to celebrate my cousins birthday. The atmosphere was nice the service as well but I really was disappointed on the food. The calamari was over cooked, salty and dry did not enjoy it at all my wife order chicken parmigiana and she didn't not like it at all she only ate two bites out of it and last we decided to order desert which was the cheese cake and sadly the desert was not good at all. My girlfriend and I, along with three people I work with and their significant others decided to give the Palm a try during restaurant week last night. We had a table reserved for 8 at 9:00pm, but a few of us arrived early and had a drink at the bar. We were seated right on time as the rest of the group arrived. I'm pretty sure all of us knew we would be ordering from the Restaurant Week menu even before we arrived considering the value, and we were not disappointed with the selections available. I chose the Caesar salad, Filet Mignon, and Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. My girlfriend went with the Lobster Bisque, Salmon Filet, and Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. The meals were somewhere around $35 for the three courses. My Meal: The Caesar was good but it's hard to screw up a salad. The filet was also good and cooked just as I had ordered, but had I paid the full $42 price listed on the menu for it, I would have been disappointed. The chocolate peanut butter was unbelievable, everyone else at the table that ordered it agreed with me. I also had a few glasses of their house cabernet, which for $8 a glass was a good bargain. Girlfriend's Meal: She thoroughly enjoyed the lobster bisque. I had a small sampling of it as well, I much prefer a good she crab soup. The piece of salmon they brought out was huge and half of it made the ride home to the fridge. She also went with the chocolate peanut butter pie, which she loved. For a drink she decided on a PALMarita with dinner, which to new surprise tasted like a pomegranate margarita, but it was served in a martini glass. The staff was outstanding. They were very attentive and were in the same good spirits as the rest of us. You can tell most of them have been there a while and really like what they do. All in all, we had a great time. My portion of the bill was around $135 for food, drinks, and tip. We will definitely be going again. Next time though, I will have to try the chicken parmigiana considering the roots of this place are Italian. read more

We readily pay top dollar for quality food, but were very disappointed in the quality of food. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either, we'd give it a C+. We tried some other restaurants that had lower reviews in Dupont Circle the three previous nights and the their food was comparable and less expensive. The dining experience was loud, therefore, we had difficulties hearing each other across the table. But the service was very unfriendly and rude, almost like you were bothering them.
