I found myself at Mastro's for a work dinner while in the DC area for a conference. Steakhouses are the favorite for networking and educational dinners in my world - and even though there's a location in NYC, I had never heard of the chain before. That being said, I was curious to see how it stacked against other steakhouse chains - so off we went. Mastro's gives off similar vibes to other steakhouses I've been to - the interior is dark, with over the top finishes and an overall masculine aesthetic. We were seated in the main dining room - it wasn't too large, though I'm not sure if there were other rooms. There were no real surprises on the menu, though I noticed they had a good selection of wagyu cuts from the US, Australia, and Japan. We decided to start with drinks and then some apps - namely, the wagyu roll, house salad, crab cake, and seafood tower. There was no question the seafood tower was the biggest showstopper. We were able to choose which seafood to put on it, and it came adorned with dry ice for that dramatic effect. To top it off, they even flashed strobe lights against it when presenting to make it extra Instagram ready. The seafood itself was delicious, and the other apps were good as well. My only critique of the apps was the house salad - they were too heavy handed with the dressing, it would have been better if it was dressed sparingly. While the wagyu was tempting, I went with the filet for my main. The beef was cooked well (not well done), and topped with an herb compound butter which really added to the meat. We also ordered sides of broccolini, lobster mashed potatoes, and lobster mac and cheese. These were all good, though I don't find the existence of lobster mash necessary; lobster mac and cheese is enough. We finished with dessert - chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate layer cake, their signature butter cake, and cheesecake. Dare I say the chocolate covered strawberries were the best? The chocolate coating was more of a spread so it didn't fall off at first bite, and it came with whipped cream mmm. It might have been because the fruit was a repreive from the relatively heavy meal, but it was a standout for me. Though the butter and chocolate cakes were also delicious I'll call a spade a spade. Service was great - they were very attentive and consistenly made sure we were taken care of. Overall, I wouldn't say Mastro's was the best steakhouse I've been to, but they hold their own. I don't know if they're on the same level as other chains, but I wouldn't be mad if circumstances found me here again in the future. read more

The food was very good, but the service was extremely disappointing, especially for a birthday dinner at a restaurant of this quality. Our server was noticeably inattentive. At one point, he came to our table and explained that there were other people celebrating their birthdays and that he was busy attending to them. I understand that restaurants get busy, but telling a customer that other birthday celebrations are taking priority is not appropriate. He knew it was my birthday as well and even apologized for "ruining" it by mentioning this. It was an incredibly strange way to address his lack of attentiveness. When our food arrived, the server did not promptly come to plate our food. We eventually plated it ourselves, and only afterward did he come over and say that he had been planning to come plate it for us. At that point, the service had already been missed. There were also multiple staff members assisting with service, which made the lack of coordination even more noticeable. The kitchen was quite slow as well, and the garlic mashed potatoes were cold by the time we were eating our steaks. There were also clumps of mashed potatoes left on the table, which our server picked up with his bare hands. These may sound like small details individually, but together they made the service feel surprisingly ordinary for the setting. The food itself was the highlight. The filet was very well seasoned, the garlic mashed potatoes were excellent despite the temperature issue, and the signature warm butter cake with ice cream was phenomenal. My dining companion said his filet was the best filet he had ever had. I also found the dress-code enforcement somewhat inconsistent. I had made an effort to dress appropriately for the occasion, and my dining companion did as well, but I noticed another guest being admitted in denim shorts. My dining companion independently commented on how people were dressed, so this wasn't something I was looking for--it was simply noticeable. Ultimately, I would return for the food, but I hope the service is substantially better next time. Our team visited Mastro's Steakhouse during our Principal Retreat, and the experience was outstanding from start to finish. We kicked off dinner with the shrimp cocktail, oysters, and lobster bisque, which were all fresh, flavorful, and a great way to start the meal. Since I can never pass up good sushi, we also ordered the Spiny Lobster Roll and the Crispy Garlic Tuna. Both were excellent, but the lobster roll was the clear standout and something I would absolutely order again. By the time the entrees arrived, it felt like we had sampled half the menu, but I still made room for the twin lobster tails. They were perfectly cooked, buttery, and worth every bite. To finish the evening, we shared Mastro's famous Butter Cake, which lived up to the hype and was the perfect ending to an incredible meal. The food, service, and atmosphere all made for a memorable team dinner. We love coming to Mastros to celebrate our birthdays, but this time was just a random night out to enjoy a nice dinner. Unfortunately this location does not have social hour, which has great deals on martinis. However, we still enjoyed the Cosmo and the Espresso Martini. We shared a wedge salad which the kitchen split in half for us. There was a very generous amount for both of us! We also shared an 8 oz filet which they cut into slices for us to also share. We ordered the steak rare and it came out perfect even with it continuing to cook on the hot plate. We added the garlic butter for the first time which was yummy but not needed. The creamed spinach is our favorite side dish to enjoy with the steak. We sat at the bar top here and had great service. read more

I'm a Yelp Elite reviewer. I don't write reviews like this lightly. But what happened here deserves to be documented. We walked in at 7:30 PM. We didn't leave until 10:30 PM. Not because we were enjoying ourselves. Because we spent the entire night chasing down our server, Elena. It started early. My friend, a Native American attorney, asked a question about the menu. Elena didn't answer her. She turned to me and asked me to explain the menu item to her. A grown, accomplished woman sitting right in front of her. That's when we realized what was happening. She assumed my friend didn't speak English because she's an older brown woman. That's not a miscommunication. That's a assumption rooted in bias. It set the tone for the entire night. We ordered Wagyu steaks. Expensive ones. Two of us ordered medium rare. One ordered medium well. We received the opposite of everything. No one came to check on us. We had to physically hunt Elena down to flag the problem. Management eventually agreed the steaks were wrong, but only replaced one at first. We had to flag him down again for the second. We told Elena at the start that food and alcohol needed to be on separate checks for business expense purposes. Simple request. She brought one combined bill. Then when she finally separated it, the comped drink that appeared on the first bill was suddenly back on the alcohol check. When we questioned it calmly and asked for the manager, she got an attitude, walked away, and stood with other staff pointing at our table. We asked for the manager twice. He never came. She grabbed my card in a rush without taking the other person's card for the separate alcohol bill. More confusion. More waiting. The food, when cooked correctly, was fine. But no steak is worth three hours of being ignored, talked about by staff, and treated like we were the problem. Elena made it clear from the first interaction that she had already decided what kind of table we were. That's not a service failure. That's a character failure. Mastro's is, without question, my favorite restaurant in DC. It delivers the perfect trifecta: great vibes, an incredible atmosphere, and exceptional customer service, all under one roof. The menu never locks you in. Whether I'm craving steak, branzino, lamb (Cajun seasoning is the only way to get it in my opinion), or you just cocktails, there's always something calling my name. We went on a Friday night with family and had a reservation for 6pm. It was relatively quiet when we arrived, with most tables still empty, which made for a nice, relaxed atmosphere. Our server, LK, was amazing--attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the evening. We started with the Blue Point Oysters, which were fresh and flavorful. For my entrée, I had the 8oz Filet Oscar Style, and it was absolutely delicious--cooked to perfection and so tender. Went to Mastros for a company party of sorts. It was a lovely evening with a delicious, robust meal. A few things were just a little off but otherwise a great time had by all. We led off with calamari and some other appetizers. I felt like these were the only real areas for improvement. The calamari was fine but lacked flavor on its own. This was the same with the beef carpaccio. They both just needed something more. The shrimp presented in dry ice were the largest I'd seen and flavorful and the cocktail sauce quite good. The accompanying ground horseradish was yummy and potent. The bread assortment was also quite good with the pretzel loads particularly tasty. I also had a wedge salad, which actually wasn't a wedge but it tasted quite good. Especially the blue cheese and bacon. Might have been a bit better with a little blue cheese dressing too. I ordered a filet at 8 oz and medium rare with wagyu butter. I also had the DAOU Cabernet arrive with the steak. We had a variety of sides with mashed potatoes, lobster mashed potatoes - which I'm generally opposed to because it usually lacks lobster. This actually has a good bit of lobster but it felt a little overdone. We also got some asparagus and broccolini. They were fine but ordinary. The steak was perfectly cooked temperature-wise. I usually prefer a ribeye but I wasn't going to tackle a 22 bone-in cut. I wish there was a smaller option. The wagyu butter sadly melted completely on the scalding platter. It tasted great. I wish I had salt later and a fellow diner agreed. We were headed towards full already when the butter cakes arrived with ice cream and whipped cream. The butter cake was delicious and some complimentary chocolate layer cakes were fine for coworkers celebrating milestones. I feel the butter cake was just short of another local steakhouse but it was a close, close race. Service throughout was attentive, quick and professional. I went to Mastros last night to celebrate a friend's birthday and unfortunately I was left disappointed. We were a party of 9 with a reservation and unfortunately we were not seated until about 20 minutes past our reservation time. We went on a Friday and while I understand the restaurant was quite busy the service was very slow all night. It took a while for them to come take our drink and food orders, and once those orders were placed it took a while for the drink and food to come out. We ordered appetizers, bread baskets and our drinks all at the same time. The drinks came out first but it took such a long time that the waitress's has to come and inform us that the bar was backed up. As a table we ordered about 4-5 appetizers and it took over an hour for them to be delivered. The 3 bread baskets we ordered also arrived after the appetizers, so it was an over hour wait for bread. For my meal I got the pork chop and creamed spinach. I appreciated the waitress informing me that the side dishes were very large and letting us know if someone in our party already ordered a particular side dish so that we would not have too many. While my pork chop was nicely cooked it overall lacked flavor. The creamed spinach was good; however l, I was disappointed with the protein. At the end they brought out a slice of chocolate cake with "happy birthday" written on the plate for my friend which was nice, but she and the rest of my party was disappointed in the overall service from the meal. From waiting an extended time to be seated, and waiting a long time for drinks and food, it did not seem like the experience was worth the over $1,000 we paid as a group. To not make this review all negative I wanted to add some positive things I enjoyed. The singer in the longer/bar area was excellent. She took requests and because she was right next to our table we got to interact with her a lot. Additionally my creamed spinach tasted well, and I could see the effort our waitress was making to reassure us about all the delays. The ambiance of the restaurant was also nice; however I wish we were seated in the main part of the restaurant not the lounge section. I'm not sure if the person who made the reservation requested that area, so I can't speak on why we were seated there. Mastro's never disappoints. It's my favorite steak house in DC. As soon as I walked in I was greeted my the hostess who was very friendly. I arrived a little early so the table wasn't ready yet but it did not take long for us to be seated. The ambiance was nice as always. They offered entertainment which included a singer on the piano which was delightful. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. She made sure that we had everything we needed. My first review of 2025, let's go! 2024 was a wonderful YELP year! To end the year perfectly my King picked Mastro's for our final date night of the year! He would pick the BEST steakhouse in D.C. Arguably one might say there are other great steakhouses in D.C. but Mastro's to me is most definitely one of the top steakhouses in D.C. Ambiance is romantic with the dimly lit lights, white linen covered tables. There is live entertainment by the bar. Love it when I come in and there is music; I'll change my table reservation to a bar setting for that alone. For NYE they had the restaurant decorated in balloons! So pretty! Service is always stellar for me! Love that waiters work together. What's not to love! This has always been a great date night place for me, even since my first review many years ago. It was our birthday so we wanted to splurge a bit. PARKING: I took an Uber, but my friend did valet. She said it was worth it as parking garages are about the same price. SERVICE: The hosts were friendly and they took very good care of us. Our waiter was nice though seemed to look a bit tired. I had no complaints with service. AMBIANCE: Very beautiful restaurant but the music was... Interesting. Good music just seemed very random for the setting. FOOD: LEMON DROP: One of their bestsellers. I love lemon drops in general and this did not disappoint. Loved the lively presentation. BREAD: I love bread but I'm very simple with it. A nice simple fluffy roll with soft butter and I'm happy. They have a variety, including one with nuts and fruit. If I was to come back, definitely specifying the one I would like. LOBSTER MASHED POTATOES: Delicious and fair amount of lobster and butter. Probably my favorite item out of what I had. 22 oz RIBEYE: I could have used a bit more seasoning on the ribeye. I initially asked for Wagyu butter but, it had much bolder almost overpowering taste for my liking so I opted not to use it. BUTTER CAKE: The butter cake was heavenly. It wasn't overly sweet, the sauce complimented it well and it was well portioned. OVERALL: The service was great and we enjoyed what we had but I'm not sure if I'd return on my own. A month later and I'm still reminiscing about my experience at Mastros last month. If you didn't visit Mastros DC for Valentines Day dinner, then you missed out. I enjoyed Herb Roasted Branzino with a side of Garlic Truffle Cauliflower. I asked for a mocktail with mint, and Eli executed it perfectly. The only problem with the menu is that there are too many delicious options, and one can only eat so much. Everything worked out perfectly for my Valentine's Day dinner though because I left with a to-go bag of chocolate cheesecake and a separate order of chocolate covered strawberries. Both were delicious even after a couple of days in my fridge because they were already so freshly made. The chocolate cheesecake is out of this world. What makes this cheesecake extra special is the Oreo cookie crumb crust and premium cocoa, espresso, dark chocolate ganache. It also came with plump raspberries. I came to Mastros for a stress-free experience and delicious meal; my expectations were exceeded. Customer service is 5 stars, the food and drinks are 5 stars, and the live music and ambiance are icing on the cake. read more

This is definitely a dining experience place to visit. They stressed the dress code at reservation as well as follow up call, which made me worry if I was dressed well enough. Although most patrons followed the code, I didn't see anyone turned away who didn't. We both tried the Mambo salad which was like a Caesar Salad but with a horseradish kick which was intense at times but still with the try. We ordered the pork chop and tuna for entrees which both had amazing flavors. My only wish would've been to have the sashimi prepared sushi over sticky rice rather than diced carrots. I would recommend the creamed spinach as a side. It was delicious. We were surprised with a slice of chocolate mousse cake they presented us for our special event. It's hard to convince me to eat at many of the steakhouses in DC because they are so lackluster when it comes to GF and cross contamination, but I finally gave in to Mastros. Mastros has outdone every other name in the game (Joes, CG, Occidental, even...) Not only was my allergy accommodated and repeated back to me multiple times, but the cut of meat and the flavor was out of this world. We chose this spot to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. The atmosphere was great: a spacious, dimly lit interior with live music. However, we hit a bump right away with a long wait for our table--even though we had reservations. Standing at the front for nearly twenty minutes(!!) was uncomfortable, especially with the two hosts who kept glancing over and whispering, which felt quite unprofessional. Once we were finally seated, things took a positive turn. Our server was fantastic--super friendly and bubbly, and she made a real effort to lighten our mood. We ordered the bone-in ribeye, lobster mac and cheese, and garlic mashed potatoes. The ribeye was great! It had a wonderful smokey flavor and was cooked perfectly, although my boyfriend's steak didn't quite match the beautiful char mine had (even though we ordered the same thing.) The lobster mac was tasty but had a strong mustard taste that I didn't love. But mashed potatoes were heavenly -- pureed to perfection with a strong garlic flavor and an almost melt-in-your-mouth softness. To finish, we tried the butter cake, which was super soft and a generous size! Overall, it was an average experience, mainly due to the service at the beginning. Mediocre food and service. I don't understand how they can charge premium prices and position themselves as upscale dining when their steak is not well prepared and the service lacks professionalism from front desk to table. Probably one of the worst experiences we've had in a while. We gave it a try after our favorite places didn't have availability for a last minute reservation. This is a long review but it was just such a strange experience. I will start with the food: We ordered two American wagyu ribeyes to share, one medium and one medium rare. They didn't let them rest before slicing them and, by the time they brought them to the table, the juice was all over the plate. They bring them in a very hot plate- understandable- but the plate seems to never cool off so by the time you are half way through your meal, the remaining steak is already well done. We had carpaccio as an appetizer, which should have been described as an arugula salad with carpaccio. The little carpaccio in it was terrible. Service: Server talked and talked, and gave a lot of instructions before us ordering, like she had a script that she had to cover, including that the plate they were going to bring our food on was going to be very hot and we should be careful. This was a point she emphasized, which we later thought it was to cover their backs in case of a lawsuit because the plate (not the one with the steak) was sooooo hot that the side of creamed corn kept simmering and we had to put our napkins all the way up to our chests to avoid food "jumping" on our clothes. Crazy experience there, it was like having a frying pan instead of a plate. The waitress was very pushy while we were trying to enjoy our first drink and the appetizer. At some point we told her that we were not ready and she insisted that since we had our menus to the side that meant we were ready and that is why she asked us, and to call her when we were ready. She was clearly annoyed. Awful! Last but not least, front desk and pre-arrival: They called my husband twice the day of the reservation and also texted him to check if we were going to arrive. When we checked in they only asked if we had a reservation, none of the 3 ladies in the frontdesk say good night, welcome, "is your first time dining here?", none of the niceties you usually say upon arrival of guests. I visited Mastro's Steakhouse to celebrate my birthday and unfortunately, the experience was far from what I expected. The food lacked flavor and seasoning across the board, and the steak itself did not reflect the quality I anticipated from a restaurant of this caliber. Every dish felt uninspired and bland. While the ambiance and atmosphere were upscale and enjoyable, the food simply did not measure up. I left genuinely disappointed, especially given the occasion. Mastro's takes fine dining with a live entertainment music atmosphere. There is a cozy atmosphere vibe. Offering both bar seating and dining room options. The menu offers a full menu of chops and seafood and the sides and appetizers can all be shareable. The bone in ribeye was cooked perfectly and we had delicious wedge salad to go with it. Of course if there is anything you have to order is their butter cake. It is what they are known for and served with a very generous portion and served with whipped cream and warm ice cream. I always look forward to having this whenever I dine here. It is an absolute must. Of course I always get fantastic service either from the dining room or the bar. If you are in a city with a mastros and looking for a fine dining experience give them a visit you won't be disappointed. read more

So far so good. The musical guest is amazing so far. She's singing Victoria Monet and doing a good job so I love it lol. We had ALOT of food. Lobster Mac. Lobster mashed potatoes. Caesar salad. Broccolini. The sides were great. The broccolini and lobster Mac tasted the best. I had a NY strip. Tastes great. I had it cooked medium but May do medium rare next time. First time here & impressed as we first walked in. The initial host that welcome us was friendly at first, then that turned into rather awkward behavior as him and another staff were arguing about another staff being on shift way longer than he/she should have been. Tip to management, proper etiquette- remind your host/staffs not to show negativity to/around your guests! Any disagreement should be taken aside away from the eyes of your guests! Besides that initial awkward moment upon check-in, our server was great! He was cordial and attentive and made sure our experience in the dining room was exceptional. Freshly baked bread/pretzels is welcoming and tasty. Perfectly broiled and well-balanced flavor Rockefeller Oyster served in a hot plate is a must. The filet cooked to perfection, and the branzino was mouth-watering is a good pair. And a massive portion of lobster mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach to complement the main will fill you up! Was actually shocked to see a full-size lobster tail in the mashed potatoes- nicely done! And finally, simple elegant vanilla ice cream to end the night. The dining room was busy that night, but due to the high-ceilings and perhaps deadening materials around, it reduced the noise to an acceptable level. The ambiance of the restaurant is lovely. Nicely lit and quiet. We had a reserved private room. The customer service was great. The waiter was very attentive to accommodate our party. The martini was absolutely amazing. Flavor profile was delicious. The only reason I gave three stars was due to the Sea Bass. It was cooked well but lacked in flavor. They could have even put a flavorful glaze over it to bring more flavor to it. Or maybe let it marinate for a few hours. SN: The live piano was awesome. She also let us come to the piano and sing with her. I would give her 5 stars just for her live music!! read more

Celebrating my birthday I decided to visit one of the most talked about steakhouses in DC. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. When you first walk in there is a bar that you can sit at before the reservation is ready. As a starter I choose scallops and I never had one like this, it was well cooked and the sauce and cheese paired well. For dinner I had way steak with Mac & cheese. This was my first time having wagyu, what they say about it melting in your mouth is true. I recommend this to anyone who would like to try it but I wouldn't make it a usual item, it isn't filling at all.
