My two starving college kids and I were looking for a place to eat an early dinner in the area. I love the downtown Overland Park area and this was an obvious choice. We ordered the buffalo chicken dip, fried pickles, buffalo wings, and my kiddos each got a sandwich which they loved. I had heard amazing things about the wings here, but personally I had a hard time eating them. Getting the meat off the bone was a messy challenge and I wasn't enjoying them enough for all that work! The buffalo chicken dip was so good and we enjoyed the other stuff as well. They also had a M-F Happy Hour going on and I sipped a weak $4 margarita. The food was excellent pub food, we had blt's with fries and the chips and salsa appetizer. We went on New Year's Day so it was packed due to everywhere else being closed I think. Even busy we were seated immediately. The environment was loud due to the amount of people, we haven't been on a normal non holiday. The staff was friendly and helpful. We are wing lovers, so popped in for their "famous" wings. It was self seat and then hope that a server comes around. We did wait a few minutes. The server was kind. We ordered the wings and fries, which only come wet and buffalo. My set of wings were not warm to the touch, very good Buffalo sauce, very good blue cheese dressing. The wings were ok, they are huge and very awkward to eat. As I mentioned the sauce on the wings was good, but I wouldn't say there was really any flavor to the actual chicken, it was all in the sauce. It's a sports bar, so its very loud in there. Burger on sourdough was really good (better than a certain place nearby that is supposed to be known for their burgers and name rhymes with Smurg And Darrell). I don't understand. Why do people go into this place? We were there with a family group. It was busy with a party of some sort. Our waitress was so slow. She brought our drinks out one at a time...two if we were lucky. Finally ordered...nothing fancy, but the food was so mediocre. My aunt had ordered the chicken nachos and the chicken was green. Like actually green. It ended up being some weird seasoning but it was not good and the menu didn't mention it would be specially seasoned. When the coolest part of your dinner is that your table looks like a giant peanut, you start questioning things. And...if you think your waitress is slow when you get there, wait until it's time to leave, then you'll see what slow really is. read more

My husband had heard great things about The Peanut so we gave it a try. The wings are impressively large and the hubby liked them. Tried the BLT which I thought was just okay. The fries, which had an upcharge, were oddly hard and fairly tasteless. Music bingo was the game of the night and even though it was not crowded, it was very noisy. Easily some of the best bar food in town! And it's a native Lawrence bar, so you know it will be a good time. If you are from out of town, the BLTE (with egg, over-easy) is the best sandwich ever! Get that with some tots, and you are set! The wings are excellent also, but it's a commitment! If you know me, you know I absolutely love the wings at The Peanut. They're the best in the city to me. I'm a big fan of the original at 50th and Main, and while very different, the Downtown OP spot is a winner. I like that it has loads of seating, loads of TV's, and even a small patio area to watch people go by. I don't love that it's dive-bar dark in here despite being a nicer place. It has a Moe's Tavern vibe to it that I don't think fits. Wings here are just as good, as is the famous BLT. Certainly a good spot, well above average when it comes to sports bar fare, and one of the few spots I recommend that's actually fun to watch a game at. read more

Normally I give restaurants and bars a few extra days to sink in before deciding/wanting to write a review, but I couldn't wait to share my thoughts about The Peanut. The Peanut--at least from what I've heard, this one and NOT the original--is a sports bar done right. It's got all the major and minor components necessary: equal parts commercial and divey, superior lighting, TVs at all different angles, and last but not least: AMAZING WINGS. Their beer menu is a bit lacking- maybe about 14 in total- which seems like a lot but compared to places like Rock N' Brews, 14 is nothing. But their beer menu aside, their wings are quite possibly THE best wings I've ever had. NOTE and WARNING in case everyone above me hasn't warned you already: the wings run LARGE. As in, one "wing" is both a drumstick AND a wing. So take your count and multiply it by two--AKA, get half-dozen if you're a regular human being, and get the full dozen if you're The Mountain from Game of Thrones. Or just straight up starving. The dozen wings are about $20, and the half-dozen are a little over $10. I was skeptical at first, since the half-dozen came in only one flavor, buffalo (the dozen wings has two flavor options, but the flavors weren't listed on the menu). But the wings turned out to be amazing. I'd rate their wings better than their competition (*cough*B-Dubs*cough*), which is no easy feat to accomplish. Perfect to the crisp on the outside, and soft/tender/juicy/[insert delicious meat adjective here] on the inside. Buffalo spicy, but not spicy enough to stop you from going on your chicken wing rampage. I came here on a Sunday afternoon for football, but I could probably pop in here at any time on any day of the week to chill with a beer, wings, and some sports, knowing I'll have nothing but a great time and a happy belly. We walked in, sat at a booth, and waited for about 15 minutes. No server came to our table. It seemed that the only service was at the bar. We left and went to Maloney's, where we were served immediately. We might return, since the decor and menu at Peanut are better than at Maloney's. The only positive things was the waitress who told me to have a good night on my way out and the blue cheese dip for the wings. After a talk post with a large majority of people declaring The Peanut as having the best BLT in town I decided to try it after a long day out taking pictures. I called ahead and placed a to go order to pick up on my way home. First negative, smokers right in front of the door. Not standing to the side of the door, but right in front so that they had to move for me to enter the building. I use to smoke and was very respectful of non-smokers. I am also one of those former smokers that has an issue with rude smokers. First thing that will keep me from going to a business is their lack of concern for their non-smoking customers. The bar looks like the type of bar I would hang out at. Not a dive, nothing fancy, just a good place to catch a game or hang out with friends. It is quite dark inside and could use a little more lighting. The bartender was not very hospitable. I walked up and told him I had a to go order, which he promptly went to get. He came back with the order and sat my ticket down not saying a total or anything. I handed him my card, he cashed me out, brought my ticket back to sign, sat it on the bar, said here you go and walked off. I was a little annoyed at this just because he used a nice tone didn't make him nice in the least. As I was leaving the waitress told me to have a good evening with a smile and a friendly tone. Definitely a difference between her warmth towards a customer and the bartenders lack of it. The packaging for the wings to go is terrible. A paper tray covered with a sandwich wrapper. The BLT was in a plastic container and I was left wondering where the disconnect is to packaged their wings in the same manner. The BLT was a BLT. Nothing special. Defiantly not great as made out by many people. Just bacon, lettuce, and tomato on wheat bread. Not thick cut bacon, not blown away bacon flavor, just bacon. Not a great quality wheat bread, just a wheat sandwich bread. I am really missing what makes people so enamored with it. It was edible though, making it the best part of my meal. I got cottage cheese as the side with the sandwich. I know this is going to sound weird, but the cottage cheese was chewy. I don't think I have ever experienced such a low quality cottage cheese and really wasn't sure what to think. I posted a picture of the wings. If this is the normal cooked level of their wings, I am also missing the overwhelming love for the wings. They were terribly over cooked, burnt to be exact which also made them grossly dry. Even with the amazing blue cheese dip. They ended up in the trash because there was no getting past the dry charcoal flavor. The wing sauce was really good though. I tasted some that was in the bottom of the paper tray and the flavor versus heat ratio is perfect. To bad the charcoal wings overwhelmed that flavor. There were a few positives that kept The Peanut from being an outright 1 star. I would go here for drinks or a game after eating elsewhere. read more

Have been here several of times. They have fabulous, monsterously big wings. They also have good hearty chili, though tonight's chili was quite over-salted. It's packed and loud on weekends. Service is decent. Wish it seemed like the server would actually mention the salt issue to the cook or manager when I asked her to pass along the info. She offered to replace the meal, but since it was the whole reason I was there, there wasn't anything else I wanted instead. Today I was served wings with a sauce that had no resemblance of true Buffalo wings. If I wanted that I would have headed over to Buffalo Wild Wings. With all the changes in downtown Overland Park, it's nice to see consistency. The Peanut still has some of the best wings I've ever had. The service is prompt and friendly, and the staff is always attentive. I love coming here and sitting outside on the patio. I guess the idea is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The Peanut didn't even bother to print up new menus - they just took old ones from their other 3 locations. Don't know if that means they are just lazy or don't care about this location. As it is, this is at least the 3rd concept to be in this space in the 4 years I have lived a stone's throw from Downtown OP. There's a bigger question here - why do restaurants and bars fail - especially in such a fantastic location? No question the food is good - I had one of their BLTs and while I didn't have their wings on this occasion they are pretty great. The waitress even took the time to change the channel for me to the Barca game. Service and food was good. Just hard to get excited when I don't know if the place will be there in 6 months, you know? They opened last Wed 3/14/12 and they are pretty set up. They have a few remodeling things they are still going to do like rip out the weird half moon seating in the middle of the bar where no one can see you. The waitress was ok, took her a while to see us because we were sitting in the strange area that will be ripped out soon. Margarita was just ok, not good just ok. The RumpleMinze shots were awesome. The food was really good. When they remodel I am sure this will go to a 4 star rating, but for now it is a 3. If you are not familiar with downtown Overland Park it is street parking and it might be easier to park in the Farmer's Market area and walk over. There are a ton of TV's on every wall. This was the first time I tried the famous wings at The Peanut. I don't normally eat wings, so maybe I'm biased. As I held up a wing to my mouth I had to retract my hand because the sauce/spice was so overpowering, but I slowly worked my way into it. Wow! I decided to go for a second one. Thank goodness for the extra napkins our waitress dropped off. However, the highlight of my trips to The Peanut are always the nachos! They're amazing! It's about $8 or something for a ginormous plate. Totally worth it. Hope my picture will awe you. I'll definitely come back here if I'm craving nachos, maybe wings. read more

We have been going to The Peanut for years and today we decided we would not be returning. Service was great. Food was subpar. We went at lunchtime and it was busy. Not a problem. It's the prices for the food. $7.00 for mozzarella sticks. They were mushy on the inside. They clearly buy the cheapest frozen brand they can find. The mozzarella sticks from Costco taste better. And the sauce was cold. Right out of the fridge cold. SEVEN DOLLARS! Now comes the meals Kids meals don't include a drink and most of the "meals" don't come with a side. So you're looking at close to 13 bucks for your child to eat. If you want them to have a meal.. $8.00 for corn dog nuggets PLUS $2.75 for a drink. No side ... I ordered buffalo chicken wrap. So much sauce I couldn't even taste the chicken. I substituted the side for fries. $2.00. Offered a side of ranch, charged. The fries were under done. HOW DO YOU SCREW UP FRIES?! Husband ordered the Rueben, the corned beef was more like roast beef jerky. They took our daughters hamburger off due to being extra well done when ordered medium well. Fries also under cooked. Our total bill was $61.21 WASTE OF MONEY For a local business to rip off their customers like this is outrageous. Give the kids meals a side and a drink if you're going to charge 8 bucks. Your food isn't fresh so you shouldn't charge people like it is. You need to have a few drinks before the food tastes good. read more
