My wife and I stayed here for a couple of days and what a great decision. The resort was very good about keeping you up to date prior to check-in and sending you the access code prior to arrival. The check in process went great and although our room wasn't ready upon arrival she made very sure it was completed as soon as possible. The suite was very roomy, clean, and provided everything you may need. The private beach had everything for a good time on the water and also very quiet. Although expensive were really enjoyed our stay here and will highly recommend. read more

This resort is a very small and quaint resort. There are only 10 cabins with beachfront. Cabins include kitchen, dining area, small sitting ares, and small patio areas. The managers of the resort are amazing and are there to assist you. They have kayaks, paddle boards, and paddle boats for you to use from the beach. We took the kayak out and had a great time paddling around. The only thing I would suggest is getting a few new double kayaks as we had to dump the water out of we and fix the seat before taking it out. The cabins are very clean and even though the resort is right off the main highway, it is quiet and you have a key pad to enter and leave the resort. They also have 1 handicapped accessible cabin. The kitchenette alleviates the stress of having to dine out 3 times a day, especially on the busy weekends. We loved every moment we were here and we stayed 5 nights. We had a much needed vacation which was romantic, relaxing, quiet, and healing. Island Bar Resort gave us all that and more. We had such great memories in the Keys in general but this resort made our vacation perfect. As soon as we stepped in, soft music was playing in the room from the radio clock and there was chocolate key lime pie on the bed with a hibiscus bloom. It really made me drop the feeling of stress almost immediately, I felt like I was really away from the crap life I was living. The room was adorable and decorated with pictures and souvenirs that were taken by the owners from their own trips around the world. They even have a digital picture frame on the dresser showing all their amazing photos of wild life, landscape, and places they went. The TV is a flatscreen which is mounted on the wall and could be pulled out to face the bed. We were really impressed with every detail that went into this cottage -- the chocolate on the bed, how clean and maintained everything are, kitchen had paper towels, mini fridge, cooking pans, and a stove. It also had a mini cooler, a wine bottle opener, and wine glasses among all the other kitchen necessities! There was a small grill on the patio of our cottage as well. And oh, let's not forget they have free wifi! (But for folks who gets followed by work via internet, let's pretend they don't). The shower was large though the actual bathroom seemed crampy but who cares! Just do your business and stop hanging out in the bathroom! ;) They have a guest book which was really helpful to read as there are suggestions from previous guests in there. The cottage also has a binder that was full of places to eat/see and activities suggested, etc. I'd happily choose this place over any hotel in the area. Our own little cottage was right on the beach and we had the beach mostly to ourselves on most days and nights. My fiance jumped right off the dock on our first day but we mostly soaked up the sun when we were home on the afternoons. Our cottage has a mini cooler which was extremely helpful for our snorkeling trip and we used it to keep our drinks cold. This place is particularly special to us because it's where he proposed to me on December 19, 2012. Everything was perfect. We'll be back here again, no doubt. read more

Let me just tell you that this tiny row of 10 cottages is a home away from home dream getaway!!! This mom and pop run mini resort has covered every little detail if you were to stay in this home away from home! These little cottages are UBER clean, with kitchenettes, small fridge and microwave, awesome seaside-esque décor, unobtrusive flat screen TV's with little DVD players, Wi-Fi, down to your own little charcoal grill outside. A short jaunt to the private beach (which looks as if it actually gets grated every evening!)...and you can work on your latest novel or your tan. You can see straight down into the water here which is like having the Discovery Channel live and in action right in front of your eyes! AWESOME!!!! AND kayaks (1 and 2 person) and snorkeling gear are available for the folks staying at this little resort! You really don't have to leave this spot at all! This just has a homey, comfy; don't-really-want-to-go-anywhere-else feel! But if you do want to frolic in the Keys, all you have to do is go to the office and chat with Carol and Mike and see what local hot spots that they might recommend. It is expensive here, starting from $136 or so on up, which is the only reason why we couldn't stay at this location longer than 3 nights. With a 12% tax it was a good little chunk of change for our short little stay. But all things being equal...I did not leave with much Buyer's Remorse as I truly did have a wonderful experience here. I cannot say enough positive things about the owners of Island Bay Resort by the way. These folks are incredibly accommodating and completely customer service oriented. They even made up a Happy Anniversary sign for my hubby and I with a little pack of chocolates! So nice and personal! Not something you'd find at a Hilton for sure! I just loved the incredible energy at this petite hideaway in Tavernier. You just don't find little spots like this run by phenomenal people like that anymore. It's almost with trepidation that I write this review. For every great review I know more people will want to stay here, thus our little secret place will be outed. We discovered IBR about 5 or 6 years ago now and have never been disappointed with our stays. We love the small resort atmosphere and private beach where we can watch the most spectacular sunsets. Although this place isn't for everyone, no pool, no gym, no room service; for others it's a hidden paradise. We are convenient to dive operators in Key Largo, lots of restaurants and other water sports while staying here. It's pretty quiet and private, a good place for us to unwind from our busy lives in the north. Mike and Carol have always been friendly and welcoming when we arrive. The grounds and cabins are kept immaculate at all times. If you are looking a small, boutique resort to stay at while in the Tavernier area, I can reluctantly let you know of my secret hideaway. read more

We came down here for a friend's wedding, and were definitely impressed by the secluded private beach and overall island decor. The cottage we stayed in, Bahia Honda - #5, was very cute but the pricetag of $168 a night seemed rather steep for a tiny one room efficiency. This was our first time in the Key Largo are so perhaps this is the norm. Owners, Mike and Carol, were very sweet and even let us take out the kayak and hang out on the beach until our flight later in the day. All in all, a beautiful place but without checking prices at other resorts (especially one with a pool as this beach is very shallow HOT waters) would have to be a 4 star read more

The best experience I have ever had in a hotel/resort--period! First off-let me say that I have stayed in dozens of other hotels in the Florida Keys. I grew up in Florida and have taken many-a-vacation to the keys. The attention to detail at Island Bay Resort is amazing. The property has everything you could possibly need on a relaxing vacation (kayaks, a relaxing tiki hut with plush cushions, hammocks, games, lounge chairs, umbrellas, showers, etc). Paradise Found! 10 adorable cottages...humm...which one to stay in? We had the Flora and Fauna cottage #3 and were very delighted with our 4 night stay! When it was decided where we would go for spring break, we knew that we wanted to stay in a unique place. We found it! Island Bay Resort! Each cottage has a different theme. The grounds are quiet and beautifully landscaped. Lots of details have been put into making your stay wonderful! After site seeing in the mornings, we would come back to this little resort's beach because it was beautiful, clean, and comfortable to hang out in for hours at a time. We followed the owner's suggestions for places to eat and they were great. Our favorite place ended up being Snapper's. The setting was spectacular, with a private beach, ample seating to relax and read, individual cabins that made one feel cozy, and were beautifully decorated. The rooms had a small kitchenette. Spent a week at this adorable resort in July. It was a 76th birthday fishing trip for my father in law so I was looking for a place that met my mother in law's standards while being fisherman focused. This was a perfect place !!! The bungalows were immaculate! Each was decorated differently. My in-laws were in #8 and it had fishing rods and reels as decorative elements...it was adorable! Comfy beds..small kitchenettes so we could have our bagels in the morning. My husband son and I had the adjoining bungalows 9 and 10. The bathroom was amazing..we took a picture to take to our contractor because the layout and color scheme was so user friendly and bright and pretty. I was amazed at how quiet our units were...right off of Hwy 1..but landscaped so well that it was like a literal Oasis! The resort has its own little beach and dock...when the men weren't out on a deep sea fishing excursion, they were fishing and CATCHING shark and other fish. Highly recommend..I could imagine this as a great place for a family reunion or wedding...with all of the 10 bungalows for the party. read more

We had the best time here! Taking into consideration that we are in the middle of a pandemic. The property was very clean and sanitized. They had an employee going around and sanitizing all of the beach chairs, and anything else the public came in touch with. The owners were super friendly and accommodating. I am a local and usually bring my dog to the beach here. I have always been told locals are allowed on property after 3pm, which it was. Today I was asked to leave by two ladies in a transportation cart because they thought it was "inappropriate I was there" and they said that they had an event going on. (Later I found out the reason of them asking me to leave was because they thought my bathing suit was slutty! Unbelievable) I said okay, got my dog out of the water and began to dry her off. While packing my things I called over my server Danielle (who is absolutely amazing by the way,) and began to ask her for my tab. While we were talking the ladies in this large vehicle aggressively drove over almost hitting my dog! They then began to question why I was talking to Danielle, MY SERVER!! In which she spoke for me and asked them what the issue was. I didn't know what to say to them as I was in awe by the fact that they had just put my dogs life in danger. I am so disgusted by what happened to me today and will never recommend this garbage place to any one. I have heard of so many bad things to happen here like vehicles being stolen, drugs found in hotel rooms by children and just dirty sheets and rooms in general. This was just icing on the cake for me. If you don't believe me how bad it is then you should ask why the people who have worked here 10+ years have now all left... turning into one of the worst resorts in the keys. read more

My husband and I stayed at Island Bay Resort from August 13-17, 2017. Our hosts, Mike & Carol were very gracious, informative, and it was a pleasure to stay with them. We utilized the paddle boards, cabana, and even watched the ISS fly over with Carol & Mike one night. We were in the Key West Cabin, waterfront. The cabin was well furnished and decorated beautifully. All the amenities of a hotel room and more as the cabin has an efficiency kitchen, but without the hotel atmosphere. Every year we take a family trip to the keys (30 years and counting). This year, on our way out, we stopped at several motels to check out potential locations for our trip next year. The last stop on our list was this motel. We were greeted by an extremely rude man who told us we were not welcome because we were not guests. We were simply looking at the property to see if it was a place we would be interested in. No disruptions, simply driving by and taking a quick look around. One would think that when you are told we are interested in becoming guests that you would take us to the office to discuss, but instead we were asked to leave. You are correct, sir. Please don't expect us to ever become guests. We will take our business elsewhere. read more

We wanted to get away and escape our busy lives so I was searching for a quiet place off the beaten path so that we could avoid the craziness that comes with a holiday weekend at the beach. We hit the nail on the head with Island Bay Resort!! The rooms were clean, the hospitality was impeccable, the beach and sunset view were breathtaking and we were just minutes from tons of fun activity possibilities. We spent one day swimming with the dolphins and touring the area and then just grilled dinner and chilled at our "Key West" cottage. :) I can't say enough about how amazing our trip was. The BF and I came down to relax in the Keys, since this place is my home away from home. We both work very hard and needed a break. I came across this place online and it seemed exactly what we needed. No big chain busy hotels with tons of noise and people and kids. Somewhere not crowded, a little private beach and boat dock, semi-secluded with all the beautiful plants, a private cottage not hotel room was divine. This place is a gem. Owners Mike and Carol are very nice and attentive. They gave us suggestions on where to go and eat. We loved our room, #7 Conch Key. It had everything we needed, was beautifully decorated and super clean. A nice home-like feel. Outside they have a cute set-up of tiki huts, hammocks and lounge chairs. What I really enjoyed about this place was the privacy as only guests staying at the resort were allowed access to the beach. Also, that they only have 10 rooms so that means not many people will be staying there. The BF and I enjoyed late nights out on the hammock listening to the surrounding waters and watching the stars. It was definitely romantic. The sunsets I heard were amazing, but we were never around at the time to watch it due to exploring. I fancy this place much and would highly recommend if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of big hotels and want to really unwind and relax. I've stayed at the Island Bay on two different occasions now, 3 and 4 nights respectively. The resort is a tiny little place straight off Highway 1 in Tavernier in the Florida Keys. There are 9 'cottages' most of which are efficiency's but a couple are small one bedroom rooms. I've only stayed in an efficiency so will comment and describe these. They are basically one room with a small kitchenette, table, chairs and a bed. The bathrooms are always immaculate with a small shower and toilet squeezed in. The rooms are all decorated on a theme, I've stayed in birds and boats which is nautically themed. When you enter the rooms there is always a CD playing softly in the background with tropical music on and which really sets a relaxing mood. Opposite the line of 'cottages' are parking bays. A path leads down from each one to a small white sandy private beach and dock from which you can watch gorgeus sunsets and the fish (plenty of tarpon) in the water. Each cottage also has a deck and BBQ. I love it here, its so peaceful and relaxing. There is no swimming pool but enough sun loungers to soak up the sun. The owners are really nice and always helpful with suggestions etc. Prices are not cheap, the cottage efficiencies start at around $140 a night off season and this sleeps only two and the one bedroom which sleeps 3 is nearly $200 a night but I always try and stop here as it's a perfect way to start a relaxing Florida Keys vacation. read more
