TLTR warning! We had brunch The People's Kitchen in Lansing. Got there at 12:15pm and didn't start eating until 1:50pm. Well, some of us started at 1:50pm. Others of us started at 2pm and 2:10pm. We had nice servers and a great time because I love my family, so any "forced family fun" is welcomed by me. My one son actually went and moved some of his stuff into his apartment in East Lansing while we waited for food. He came back & we still didn't have food. As a food service instructor, I really felt management dropped the ball. Not enough staff and it wasn't fair to the staff that WAS there. We sat by the bar where they were submitting orders. A lot of cooks not knowing what to do, standing around looking at a computer screen and empty flat tops. When I went to use the facilities, I passed an open door to the kitchen where 5 people were standing around having a "discussion". I wanted to step in and say, "Now, is not the time to discuss the problem. Now is the time to cook & serve." Also, upon being seated, the hostess said, "We can seat you but you'll have to wait an hour for food. If you order appetizers they'll come out faster." I did order appetizers and everything arrived haphazardly in no particular order. My 2 appetizers were 2nd to last to arrive. Also, a manager-type came over and said "We're short 2 cooks this weekend and we are really struggling. We probably should've closed for the weekend." Wow. Also, the place wasn't even that full. I took pics of the empty tables. But I'm unable to upload right now. So that made our wait more confusing and frustrating. (Note to Owners: if you need a restaurant consultant, call me. Something is seriously wrong with the management here.) The food was good, not exactly hot, but good. I was bummed as I had high hopes for this place. If you're looking for a great business venture, Lansing needs more brunch options. read more

I am a sucker for any place that has duck on the menu, which isn't always prepared well. I was a fan of the duck dish here: it was cooked well and had a nice balance of flavors. The service was great. Space is a little small, but great ambiance. read more

Checked this out based on yelp reviews and while it was nicely decorated/different cool I was a bit disappointed with the amount of meat I got in the pork belly hash. There might of been 1oz.. not really a fair shake at 13.00. My lady did like the French toast though( a bit lemony for me) Based alone on the amount of meat ( 3-4 chunks the size of a marble) I'm not sure I'd return Really had high hopes read more

This has got to be Lansing's hippest brunch place. The super cool stained glass entry way, open kitchen with bar seating, and vegan options all tell me so. I started with a Bloody Mary here while waiting for my table. Wow, it's spicy and that's not my bag. Garnish was lame with a few pickled carrot slices and no salted rim. That's where they lost a star. Service was on point once we were seated. I had the frittata. My sister had the super pancakes. All were exceptional. The syrup could've added more if it were REAL, but that carmel butter syrup that comes with was incredible. The bacon jam and black beans in the middle of my frittata were super too. Today we went to people's kitchen for lunch. We find the lunch menu to be a bit more affordable for us. They were serving both breakfast options and lunch. The kid's menu is not written. We opted for the fried green tomatoes, which were delicious, but could have had one more slice (only two included) for the price point. My son opted for the grilled cheese. This was delicious, on a sweet brioche type bread and mild white cheeses. They were served with the crispy roasted potatoes... one of our favorite things about PK. My husband chose the pancakes. They were nice and fluffy and served w melted butter mixed with maple syrup. After my waiter's suggestion, I went with the jerk chicken wrap. I liked the sweet and savory mix along with all the crunchiness. Our server was great. Service took a minute because he was also mixing our drinks. We always love their Bloody Mary cocktails. They are horseradish forward, and we opted for the "better" version so we could enjoy the "lil buddy" small beer side car. The Street Kitchen food truck found a permanent home, like with a roof and everything! The People's Kitchen features some of the most unique dishes in the area. They are not afraid to push the culinary envelope so, while every once in a great while the result may be not one of my favorites, the 98% of the time they hit... they hit a home run. Now that they have a kitchen (and bar!), the speed of the meal seems to be a lot better. To be fair, I never minded the slowness of the food, because Zane's concoctions were completely worth the wait... but it is nice to have the meal served quicker so you can get in and out during lunch. read more

It's taken me a while to check it out after hearing so many things about it, and I can say that I'm delighted I did finally make it! I've been for both dinner service and lunch and can say that this is truly one of the Lansing area's real gems (maybe MI in general?). I would describe the food as creative, accessible, and incredibly well-executed comfort food. Everything I have had there has been excellent -- a great combination of well-prepared flavors. As for the reviews that ding them for the service, I will agree that it wasn't quite as snappy as some places, but it wasn't excessive by any means. I hope that they work out some of those things as time goes on. I can't wait to try breakfast as I add this to my list of go-to restaurants in Lansing. read more

Checked out People's Kitchen for brunch. Holy $hit!!! This was good. I had the Vegan Chilaquiles and my boyfriend had the pancakes that were worthy of the "to die for" description our server gave us. I decided to splurge for once and get myself the full portion of the scallop entree ($28) and this is what I received. The 2 stars are for the cool vibe of the place and the apples were great. However the portions were ridiculously tiny for that much money. My boyfriend got the cod sandwich for $12 and it was twice the size. And if the food was spectacular, I definitely would have been less upset. The 4 half slices of portobello were crazy acidic and the cauliflower purée was so salty I couldn't finish it. The scallops themselves were alright but a little salty too. Overall, I really wanted to like this place but it was just very disappointing. If you go, stick to the cheaper plates. read more

The presentation was nice. However, the scallops had a nice legume purée, unfortunately something in the presentation "broke" so there was this watery substance on the fringes which was unappealing. This is probably the best place I've eaten at in this town! I have to apologize to Zane for not eating here sooner! My loss ... Many a mediocre meal has passed through this palette. This piece of candied bacon was the single best piece of bacon I've ever eaten in my life! (And this girl knows bacon!) I got the crunchy waffle with the candied bacon, strawberry jam, granola and pearl sugar. Let us not forget about the whipped cream! What an amazing combination! Never knew I wanted all these things together... thankfully he did! I love the vibe in this restaurant. The seating is great! The service was top-notch! This is our favorite place for brunch in the area. Excellent coffee, service, and food. The staff is always very kind and I take friends there whenever they come to visit. The menu is changed fairly often and my partner and I are always excited to see what's new on the menu. Whoever makes the dishes is very creative and we give some major props to them! The only reasons I gave a 4/5 is because I think they could use more "fresh" elements to the dishes. Some can be rather heavy, requiring some nice dressed greens on the side or fresh fruit to cut the richness. If there were these additions, I'd be over the moon! Otherwise, we still love it here and probably go once a week because it's that good! Highly recommend. read more

It was really good food, with really good service. It was a great place to stop by after looking at colleges. We got the crispy chicken sandwich and the Mac. With the sandwich we got potatoes and I'm telling you they were to die for. Just ask for salt and ketchup and you'll be all set. For dessert(which is the only thing I took a second to take a pic of before devouring it)we had a cheesecake and the chocolate crème brûlée. Absolutely awesome. I don't like lemons, so I didn't like the cheesecake as much as I would have liked, but it was cooked perfectly so it's just my preference for why I didn't like it. Plz go here, it was awesome. Stopped in for dinner and I was not disappointed. I love the atmosphere, my mom thought it was too loud, it didn't bother me...If you prefer a quieter spot they have a really nice outdoor seating area. I had one of their specialty drinks which was delicious. We had the fried cauliflower appetizer and I coulda drank the sauce it was so good. My mom had the scallops and I had the fried chicken and duck fat smashed potatoes and both dishes were delicious and I recommend both! Service was great. Food came out hot and not a long wait.
