Ok, so the food is decent and it's dirt cheap. And that's more or less where the accolades end. We're semi-locals--that is, we live in western NJ and therefore end up eating somewhere in the Lehigh Valley about once a week during the school year (2-3 times a week or more in summer). People's Kitchen has been on our loose rotation of regular LV places for several years. And we loved it, as per most of the reviews, in the beginning. But over time we've come to realize that it's just not that good and now we seem to go only when we forget how not so great it is. Today, however, is likely to be our very last visit ever. First, we'll start with today's special which was a Mexican breakfast burrito. When we sat down between 11-11:30 on Saturday morning our waitress informed us that it was no longer available. Fine, I didn't want it anyway--although PK's regular menu is so limited its always nice to have options. The issue I have is that while we waited for our food (a Full Monty and a couple of sunny side up eggs, bacon, and toast), which took the better part of an hour, I saw several burritos leave the kitchen. Maybe some of them were for people who'd been waiting even longer for their breakfasts than we did. But certainly not the one being eaten right next to the cash register as we were paying--she came in nearly an hour after us. Speaking of the wait for food, did I mention we got the Full Monty and some eggs? The couple two tables away from us sat down at least half an hour after us and got served before us--they also paid and left before us. And the couple in between us and them sat down even later and got served the same time we did. We weren't the only ones waiting so long either. You'd think with only 6-8 items on each of its menus (breakfast and lunch), they'd be able to batch cook orders more efficiently. Of course, the other possibility is that some customers rate better service than others--so much for the "peoples" egalitarianism implied by the restaurant's name, if true. LOL. During our long wait, I did get a refill on my coffee as one of the other waitresses wandered around with the pot. My husband, on the other hand, had to wait until our food arrived before he got a refill on his iced tea. And I had to ask for it. And some ice water. And more coffee. We also had to ask for butter for his toast because it doesn't automatically come with it. My husband, at first, thought maybe its because they want to respect vegans. Then he pointed out that the two eggs, and bacon, on his plate kinda made that point moot. Now let's talk about that iced tea. I propose the following to all those who enjoy a challenge: 1. order an iced tea and an ice water. 2. Close your eyes (or better yet, put on a blindfold) 3. Now have someone hand each of them to you randomly. I guarantee at least half the people who try this won't be able to tell the difference between the iced tea and the ice water. The coffee isn't much better. I made the mistake of adding milk to mine before tasting it and it ended up tasting exactly like milk. So I drank my refill black...it could best be described as "lukewarm water with coffee notes". Regarding the food, we've had nearly everything on the regular menus and they're all good. Nothing is spectacular. Except perhaps the bacon. My husband says its very good. Conversely, nothing is bad either. I would suggest that the menu makes the food sound way better than it actually is. As I wrote before, the prices are way low, although the portions are rather smaller than a typical breakfast joint, so its not like you're getting some huge bargain. But still, its good value for money. You do have to check your bills--I see someone else mentioned they were charged for refilling a coffee (at least that was their impression). The last time we were here, we got charged for two iced teas when we only had one at our table -- but we caught the error while still there. (And see what I mean about forgetting how "not so great" PK can be? Yes we got the iced tea again.) Oh how I wish I could love this place. It's just not worth the bother anymore. read more

Unexpected treasure! My sister is from out of town and she searched this place and was curious about it. Glad she suggested it. Very small on the inside but the place was very clean. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. We were told it would be a 30 min wait but it was more like 15min. I had the mac and cheese and it was delicious! Cooked just right and very tasty! The People's Kitchen certainly makes a statement about its social views by the name on the sign swinging outside its corner door at North and Linden in Bethlehem, Pa. That I share it's egalitarianism has only slightly colored my appreciation for what emerged from its front of shop grill. We drove up from Bucks County to deal with a car repair. As I knew little about this old steel town, I checked with Yelp for a solid breakfast place close to the auto dealer and it's bodyshop. There were several high star choices, but the name of this establishment carried me there (thus, the bias). TPK occupies a corner retail space in a mixed residential/small business working folk neighborhood. Ample street parking. Three steps up to its angled door. Walking in, the cooking area was right there, with dominant grill and huge pile of nearly done home fried potatoes on one side. Yeah! I saw them and a moment later their aroma hit my nose with a mix of pepper, salt and onion. Wham! Whatever else I was going to eat, those babies were invited to the party. We saw a deuce along the wall, cleared, set and waiting. We wound our way passed the exiting customers, and sat down. There was a small dining space in back, as well as those few wall huggers and a 6 stool counter. Our server brought over the one page menu on a clipboard, followed soon by a big mug of their coffee. He gave us time to settle, discuss our options and enjoy the java, before returning to take our order. Strong tasty Joe was another good sign. I was in the mood for traditional french toast. They had it, along with sexier croissant versions with "bourbon banana," berry compote, or chocolate/Nutella toppings. Ouch! Tempting. But, the availability of pure maple syrup for a small up charge, made it easier to stick with my choice. Love Grade B Dark. She opted for the quiche and side of homefries (at my pathetic suggestion). Everything arrived about 10 minutes later. Spread some butter at each layer and slowly poured the maple over that. They melted and pooled in the hollow of the top slice until I knifed through all three and watched it drain and spread around its foundation on the plate. Very good. The bread was saturated with the egg, vanilla, sugar mix, yet still absorbed most of the syrup. It could have used a final searing to caramelize the edges more, but I wasn't complaining. The quiche was baked and served in a small white oval dish. It was a bacon cheese onion Lorraine-like combination. Excellent. Could have eaten a lot more, but I wasn't invited to share beyond that small tasting. Don't blame her at all. Finally, those homefries. They were crisp, tender and flavorful. Lots of burnt nubs of tater and onion in the mix, just the way I like it. Luckily, I was allowed to share and appreciated each morsel. The coffee was strong, smooth and plentiful. The People's Kitchen makes me glad I will be coming to Bethlehem regularly for the next few years. It is a first rate destination for a great breakfast. read more

Unprofessional! Planned our day trip to Bethlehem around this place. Even called an hour before our arrival and the lady in the phone just said "see you soon." Then we arrived to find the open sign turned off and a hand scribbled note above their normal hours saying they are closing early Dec 23rd at 1pm. When I checked the door it opened and the man at the register said they are closing in a few minutes. Update your holiday hours online!!! I saw that there were one or two cooks but our food came right away. Simple menu with extremely reasonable prices! Can't wait to come back and try everything else on the menu. My husband had French toast which he loved....and the basin was SO good. Great little brunch spot! There is a limited menu and limited seating. There's a couple of tables and bar seating. We arrived around 11:30 on a Saturday and had a 5-10 minute wait, which wasn't bad. The menu is nice and concise without being distracting. The service was great, everyone was very friendly. I had the Mac & Cheese with an egg served in a cast iron skillet. It was delicious with the melted cheese and strip of bacon, I would definitely recommend it! My fiancé had the croissant french toast with bourbon bananas. This place is so small but it works! The kitchen looks extremely functional without a lot of hype. The menu is just as small with only one side and a few options. I decided on the shrimp & grits. The shrimp were cooked perfectly. The cheese grits came wrapped in 4 crepes and drizzled with a chipotle bbq sauce. The server offered Tabasco, Cholula and Sriracha. I didn't need any because the flavor of the chipotle bbq sauce was amazing and had a nice kick on its own that i didn't want to cover up. The coffee was good diner coffee, much better than my hotel's. I got out of there with a tab just under $12, excluding tip. This was a great little discovery. I'd like to come back to try the quiche and some other menu items. ****2nd visit**** The menu seems to be the same about 6 months later, but is full of great items. It was hard not to order the shrimp and grits crepes again. Today I tried the Bourbon banana croissant french toast. It was outstanding! It wasn't overly sweet like some restaurants serve. The portion was large but I didn't leave a bite. Once again, the coffee was perfect and much better than my hotel's coffee. Super easy to find; corner spot on Linden, playground across the street so our kid could play while we waited for food (yes, this is the kind of stuff I think about now), plenty of street parking. Service was excellent. We walked in and were greeted by the most handsome chef I have ever seen in my life. A table closer to him would have been nice, but our table in the back was comfortable. Our server was really friendly and immediately brought our kid a drink with a very cool straw so he was happy. The brunch menu was varied and had something for meat lovers to vegans. It's very small inside, with only 8 stools at the bar and 2 four tops, and 6 two tops, so I this isn't really a hang out spot, but the food was very delicious. We came for breakfast and had the bowl special, which today was a ribeye hash and whiskey sauce. Potatoes and eggs your way. The croissant French toast with bourbon bananas and the Mac n cheese. Everything was great, from the service to the food, makes me want to move here. The kitchen is all behind the bar, which I found to be the best thing about this place. Great little place for breakfast and lunch and unlike so many places these days, all cooked from scratch. So don't be in a hurry when Billy is the only one there, but it's worth the wait. Menu is simple but with some nice twists to it. I had an omelette that was nicely prepared, coffee was great and get this, real creamer in a jug, not those horrible UHT, no need to refrigerate, horrible creamers. Best buckwheat pancakes I ever had. Got the bourbon bananas on the side. Good choice because the pancakes are great with just butter with a slice of banana. Bacon was perfect. My son enjoyed his TWO dishes including the Aunt Barbara quiche (with Jalapeños) and the French toast ( forget the name). Very friendly. Surprisingly high end breakfasts from a classic corner joint. The site has been a restaurant since dinosaurs roamed Central Bethlehem, going through various iterations of cheap eat/greasy spoon to the current setup. It feels like a 40s/50s lunch counter, with big band music of that era to compliment the effect. The place is quite small, so don't plan on bringing a big group. Sitting at the counter has in People's feels like the quintessential Americana/Rockwell-esque experience, sans the polio and war in the Pacific. The food is tuned up versions of classics.
