For a little place with a café type ambience The Perfect Cup is my cup of tea for impromptu casual breakfast, brunch or lunch. The new owners have kept the same framework but they've put their own touch with excellent quality food. Their fresh squeezed lemonade hits the spot on a hot day with the correct tart to sweet balance & there's no doubt it was made with fresh hand squeezed lemons! All 4 sandwiches were fantastic from the ubiquitous egg salad sandwich to the turkey, chicken & rueben selections we ate. The sides of coleslaw & cucumber salad were refreshingly crisp. Wife and I stopped by after driving up to Kennett Square, and we were not disappointed especially as it was a random google search for a quick bite to eat that led us here! Super friendly guy at the counter (didn't catch his name) who recommended our coffee drinks and breakfast options, and everything came out awesome! Bacon was crispy and the hash browns were pure perfection. Pancakes were great and the eggs were wonderfully cooked (something as a chef I really look for). Ordered lunch at 1pm and was told should be ready in 20 minutes. Got there 25 mins later and paid for my order, and what i'm assuming is the owner that took my payment, said my food is almost ready. Waited 10 minutes and nothing, while watching the cook. Asked the person if my order was even started and she says no. I asked for my money back and left, after wasting my time. I'm all for supporting local businesses, as i'm a local business. But don't tell someone on the phone 20 minutes if you can't have it ready in even 30 minutes, let alone starting making the food. I would've been totally OK if they had said 40-45 minutes, but don't say something if you can't fulfill your orders in said time. Also, the cook told a guy waiting for his order that he ran out of bacon, and as soon as he leaves, he throws a bunch of bacon on the grill. read more

What a nice little place! You go in and order your food at the counter. They give you a number and will bring your food out when ready. Even with a party of 6 our food came out quickly and together. The staff is very friendly, the décor is very heartwarming and comfortable and the menu is extensive. They have everything on their breakfast menu from eggs to French toast. They even have a lunch menu which I didn't have a chance to scan over, but I will definitely be back to try their lunch. My mom and I essentially had the same meal. I had the breakfast burrito, and she had it in omelette form. I loved the fact that the burrito was not calorie ridden; eggs, a tiny bit of cheese and amazing sautéed vegetables topped with salsa was found inside the perfectly warm tortilla. They even had two different types of hot sauce I could choose from. Price points are average and definitely worth it for the quality of food you are getting. I cant wait to come back! read more

It is nice to see they have reopened. The new owner is nice and the staff all seem to get along, but I think they are all related which makes some things easier in that environment but also some challenges. Like how much cooking experience do they have? And the ladies behind the counter seem to not know what ingredients the cooks have or if they can make certain meals on the menu. They should not have to ask if they can make a sandwich, they should know. The main issue I have is the prices are very high for the quality of food. The last owners raised the already high prices which we were alright paying since she was an experienced chef. Now the food is just ok. For example, two plain pancakes (I actually ordered banana but they either forgot to put the banana in or did not have it) are over $7. The belgian waffle is $9. I tried the perfect grilled cheese and it used to be loaded with vegetables but had a small amount of anything inside and had a strange taste. And it should not be $11. This is Hockessin and not NYC. And the wait time for the food after ordering was very long. I give them credit for the staff being friendly, but that only goes so far. I expect the food to be decent and at the prices they are charging, more than decent more like phenomenal. read more

When I first came I noted the fact that the cashier asked me so many questions about what I'm ordering. Since I'm on a strict diet, I really appreciated it. Some people may complain that "the lines are long," and they probably do that at the grocery store or at wawa too, but when I want something specific for breakfast, I really like how thorough they are. Then the coffee came - a vanilla latte. OMG it was the best one I've ever had... for real. Better than any independent coffee shop or Starbucks. It was amazing! The food came quickly. I've ordered Gluten Free French toast (amazing), gluten free blueberry pancakes (crazy good), eggs & bacon with GF bread (tasty), and today I got a breakfast sandwich with GF bread (awesome). The food is consistently great and cheaper than any restaurant. Sitting down and waiting for a waiter or waitress somewhere would have taken longer but the personal touch from everyone from the cashier to the chef to the bussers made this place feel like home. read more

Ordered 2 bacon, egg and cheese on an English muffin, and 2 med. coffees. $22.00. $22.00!!! Waited, waited and waited...as were most people seated around us. Then we're served. One greasy slice of bacon per tiny sandwich. One! Previous owners soaked every last bit of oil from the bacon for the crunchiest bacon ever! Server walked by and asked us if everything was ok. I snarled, "One piece of bacon? Cut in half? Really?" He offered to bring us more (and he did) and I ungratefully snarked that it should've been on the sandwich and were we going to be charged $100 for the extra bacon. It's unfortunate that I am giving The Perfect Cup just one star. It's not because of the food, it's purely based on the way in which the "head chef" or likely manger runs the business. I had forgotten why I stopped going there... and within moments of sitting down today, I certainly was reminded why. The female manager/head chef speaks down to employees beyond words. She is rude and relentless. She actually seems to get joy out of being so mean to the employees. I can't imagine that the employee retention rate is extremely low based upon the way she treats them. Certainly seems like she needs to take sometime to attend leadership, management and communication courses. This could help her in numerous ways while also improving the business, employee retention, staff satisfaction and improve number of returning customers. She could benefit from some humble inquiry. If I worked for her, I certainly would walk right out and never turn back. To the employees whom I have seen her speak so rudely to, keep your head up and don't let anyone disrespect you like that. She isn't making you strong or better... so whatever her excuse, it isn't acceptable. I am upset with myself for not saying something in person today and am even more upset seeing the number of Yelp reviews that discuss her negative behavior. Looks like this small local business should really assess what quality work is. I can't support such a negative work environment. read more

After I wrote my initial review, I witnessed the most disrespectful conversation I've ever heard between manager (maybe owner?) and employee. The manager, a woman, chewed out the employee because she had just answered a phone call and didn't handle it as the manager thought it ought to be handled (she was going to take a message instead of handing the phone to the manager). Now this employee was my cashier just minutes earlier, and she was extremely friendly. She was fast, knowledgable, friendly and welcoming. Great service! The credit card machines were down that day, and it was clear that the entire staff was stressed out, but this employee still had a smile on her face. I can see why everyone would be stressed... if the manager treats all the employees the way I witnessed her treat this employee, I'd expect morale to be low. It was so disrespectful, condescending, and downright nasty that I am kicking myself for not saying anything. Worst of all, there were several customers within earshot. If you need to talk sternly to an employee, at least don't do it in front of paying customers. Very unprofessional, not to mention an added level of disrespect to the employee. I would not come to this cafe again even though I very much enjoy their lattes and their coffee flavors, if for no other reason than to protest the way the manager treated her employee. Absolutely inappropriate. To that employee, if you ever read this: walk away from that place!!!! You deserve to be treated far better than the way your manager treated you that day. read more

Not sure why anyone would bother coming here. If you ask any questions about where their food comes from, you'll be sorely disappointed. Their "house baked" muffins are just packaged pre-mixed batter squeezed in a pan. Their hummus comes from a jar. Their roast beef comes pre-cooked, pre-sliced. Even their turkey, which they brag about roasting themselves, just comes as a pre-seasoned, plastic wrapped block that they just toss in an oven. Make no mistake, nothing you eat here is even close to being cooked from scratch. When I spend my hard earned money on a restaurant, I expect a little more than dumping premade food out of a box. Also, celiacs beware. If you order anything gluten free from their menu, it's probably contaminated. They cook their gluten free pancakes on the same surface as everything else without sanitizing and even stack them right next to wheat pancakes and bread. That's just lazy and shows a lack of respect for their customers' food safety. Another warning sign is the smell. The whole place smells like a dirty grease trap. Definitely not what I imagine when I walk into a cafe. I expect smells of coffee and fresh baked pastries, and instead it's burnt oil and smoke. Had breakfast here and still had the smell in my hair and clothes when I went home in the afternoon. Another sign of laziness. If they can't be bothered to keep the clean their greasy cooktops, think about how dirty the food is. Be warned. Spend your money at a better establishment. read more

Well, I have lived in the area for two years and visited the Perfect Cup frequently before the new owners took over. The food was still good when things changed hands but I would loose my appetite after sitting and listening to the owner berate her staff loudly and in full view and hearing of us, her paying customers. I experienced that a few times and stopped going because I thought she had outstanding staff with good customer service skills, but you would never hear a complement, only harsh criticism. That was about a year ago. Today I gave it another chance thinking maybe the owner has worked out the links and gotten over her self-righteous attitude. Sadly, I was disappointed. She has toned down the berating of her staff to conversational volume...I wasn't there five minutes and she began berating the busboy. Unbelievable. Why she thinks we want to be witness to her horrible management skills escapes me. Furthermore, the coffee was burnt (I can get way better coffee at work for free) so at $2.25 for a large to go cup ($.75 refills) it is way overpriced for my taste. When I left the cafe, and got into the car, I realized I was still smelling the cafe. It was ME! My clothes wreaked of grease odor. I wasn't even sitting near the grill. I don't understand why there were other people staying there absorbing up those odors. One positive was the breakfast sandwich. I had it on sourdough bread which was nicely flavored and I picked goat cheese for my cheese choice which I LOVE on anything but don't get to choose very often. I would maybe go buy a sandwich or pastry to go, but someone really needs to tell that owner to take better care of the good workers she has. That's just sad. read more

A really local cafe spot to grab a quick coffee or to have a nice lunch. Came with the family on a weekend, and we ordered some salads and a sandwich, all of which were actually pretty good. I got a chicken and artichoke salad that had homemade bagel crisps - great stuff. The food is simple and veritably well-put together here. Now, I must actually agree with Nichole E. on her sentiments about employee interaction that is completely visible to the dining room. They need to have some kind of wall or divider between the dining room and prep/kitchen area, because everyone can see what is going on with the staff behind the counter. It makes the experience a little bit uncomfortable if you're not expecting such a thing, and I also think diners will appreciate a little bit of separation from the kitchen in terms of watching food prep. Definitely give TPCC a try if you're in the area. The staff is friendly and patient, and they need the local community's support! read more

I pass The Perfect Cup on my way home and have wanted to stop in for months. I finally made it in. The decor, menu, and food cases looked promising. We ordered a simple meal that was so overpriced that I had to look at the receipt twice. Food arrived and looked good. Tasted ok, but not as good as I could get at other local restaurants for a better price. I was excited to have a true cafe experience and enjoy some quiet, work time. Instead the smoke from the kitchen was so intense that my eyes and throat burned and my hair and clothes smell like I worked a shift in the kitchen. Even worse was listening to the manager berate the employees. It was completely unprofessional and not conducive to a fun cafe experience. Then the manager made a the staff shout everything they were doing each time they did anything or left the line. This went on the entire time I was there. I'm so disappointed because I like to support local businesses. I read past reviews to see if this was a one off and if I should give it another shot.
