I had lunch with a friend on Monday. The restaurant was busier than I expected it to be. The clientele was seventy year-old women, for the most part. This is generally the population of people that I see around this time of the day in Hockessin. It came out with a ton of fries. The fries were the second best in Hockessin that I tasted. The meal was especially excellent because I bought a friend who is always fun to be around. I have not been to this restaurant for years. I would recommend it to anyone who love to eat steaks. The next time I am here, I will choose a different steak, and a non-fried vegetable. read more

We dined there recently. We have eaten there in the past and were always pleased with the experience. Our recent trip, not so much. I ordered the 6 oz filet which was properly cooked but the meat was extremely dry. One of my dining companions ordered another steak and instead of medium well it was medium rare and she had to send it back to the kitchen. This is restaurant that prides itself on their beef entrees and charges accordingly. I don't know what happened in the kitchen but it was definitely an off night for the chef. On a positive note, the service was excellent thanks to a waiter named Collin. The manager also stepped in to apologize for the not so well done steak. I don't think we will be back since there are other restaurants who offer steak and do a better job. I would give the staff 5 stars if I could split the rating. This was my first visit back here since 2018. I had grouper back then and have never had Redfire's steak, and RJ has never been here at all. We got seats at the bar right away, and the bartender was knowledgable and friendly. She got RJ signed up for rewards which include another restaurant he visits often. We started with cheesesteak spring rolls which we try every time we find a new version somewhere, and they were crispy and delicious. I'm not 100% sure which steaks we ordered because we forgot to grab the detailed order receipt. However, I only order filet mignon and I believe it was with au poivre, and his was probably some type of strip because that is what he usually gets. The steaks were juicy and cooked perfectly with that buttery smoky flavor that comes from whatever magic it is they do back there in the kitchen. It was melt in your mouth goodness, and RJ was jealous of my mashed potatoes and broccolini. We finished with the cheesecake which was so original and different with apple butter and pecans. The sliders have this amazing maple pepper bacon - so good and cheddar cheese with 1000 island dressing and the onion rings are homemade with a dipping sauce. This place is going downhill. The food overall just isn't as good as it used to be and is very inconsistent. I'm not sure whether they're trying to be a casual restaurant or a steakhouse or what. They removed one of my favorite vegetarian entrees off the menu which was the black bean burger and it was house made. They replaced it with this cauliflower burger which was so bland. I couldn't even finish it. Clearly others felt the same way because they removed that. Now it's some pasta dish. The crab cakes that used to be delicious are now gross and salty. The first time they changed how they made them management fortunately made it right and didn't charge me and got rid of it. I tried the crapped cake two more times and it was just not edible. I do like the chopped salad which is my go-to. It's really the only thing on their menu I can eat without getting sick because of my dietary restrictions at this point. I'm afraid to order any of the other seafood dishes other than a side of shrimp because of the saltiness and whatever else is going on. It's large and fills me up and has a lot of goodies in it. When sitting at the bar if I want to snack in want to eat healthy, they'll whip me upl some carrot sticks and ranch dressing. When I'm in a position to cheat, I do love the artichoke dip in the crab dip. They do a beautiful job with those. Again very inconsistent. The wait staff is still really good. And we do enjoy sitting at the bar because we can get an affordable bottle of wine that we like. It's their house wine and It's pretty okay! They have an extensive wine list with wines priced from high twenties to the hundreds. If you order a wine that costs three digits, they'll give you a decanter. We are not those people. I ordered a Belvedere martini and they charged me $20. I pay that in a major city. This is Hockessin. Come on. Do better. But then I can get a martini that's another top shelf vodka for $16 which seems to be the going rate. This used to be our go-to restaurant, but it really isn't anymore. This is a restaurant we'll choose as a last resort if our plans fall through or we need a quick dinner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Even the appearance has just gotten dingy. Had previously been here several times for birthdays and anniversary's and I raved about it, bragged about it, endorsed it. Came on Sunday the 4th of February, 2024 and I am flabbergasted at how this place has destroyed itself in such a short period of time. Got here at 7 20, ordered Bao Buns immediately and then the rest of dinner 15 mins later. The Bao Buns are no longer proper steamed Bao Buns...which is not indicated on the menu...they are now fried and the manager assured me that was an intentional choice and their customers love it. Well...if you appreciate a proper bao bun you know that flattening them and frying them are not indicative of a good Bao Bun. Whatever, we let that go. We ordered our main entree's at 7 35...there were three tables in the restaurant. I had to get up and go to the bar over 45 mins later to ask what had happened. Manager came out and apologized and the food came out. My ribeye was ordered Medium Rare...it came out rare and the fat wasn't rendered. It wasn't edible so quickly gave up. Took another 15 mins for anyone to check on us. Finally came out and the waitress relayed the manager (who wouldn't come back out again) had taken the steak off and was sending out a dessert for free. At this point our babysitter was already on extra time and we declined and asked for the check. The dessert came out anyway which we had to send back. The waitress never apologized a single time through the whole experience, whom we assume forgot to even place our order as nothing else explains why it took nearly an hour for our meal when three tables were in the restaurant. The manager never came out again. We had been here many times, always enjoyed it. Will tell everyone I know not to go. It was appalling. Still tipped 20%+ on what the total would have been cause I'm still gonna give the benefit of the doubt that the kitchen botched it all...but I don't feel it's likely this was isolated to kitchen staff... Ate here last night with my husband and a friend and was very frustrated with the service. We were seated in the bar area as there was a band we wanted to hear . Our waiter came over and took our drink orders fairly quickly. But then we waited 30 minutes for the drinks to arrive. The waiter came over at one point and told us that he was only 18 and it would take longer for him to get his drinks ( he said the older servers could make the drinks themselves) . After waiting 30 minutes I went over to the bar which was extremely chaotic and saw a manager and the server with our drinks. When I mentioned to the manager we had waited 30 minutes, she got an attitude and told us that the server was only 18 . Ok - WHY would you have an 18 year old working in the bar on a very busy bar night.? In all honesty this kind of spoiled the evening for me . The food was ok - very salty . But nicely presented. I don't know where to begin with this... but let me positively say: we enjoy this restaurant. The food is always good. Our not so positive experience: It's a Saturday night.... I understand the restaurant industry.... but we were in the doors before 4:30. We tried to be responsible (and respectful to the service industry) & go out early because we have our 6 month old son. The restaurant was EMPTY. The host explained the only table we could have was in the bar area and we had to be done within 1 hour and 50 minutes... ? Huh? I was so taken aback. So, I was confused and questioned the host again. Why did we have to sit in the bar area with our obvious infant/carseat carrier and all? I asked if we could be in the main dining area like off to the side .... Cause ya know: a baby? He said no and that they have 250 seats reserved for the night... Ok. We're a family of restaurant workers. We get the "weekend dinner rush", but it seemed so far fetched and over the top as if we were the inconvenience... Thank goodness we were done eating by 6 !
