Phil's Tavern is my favorite happy hour spot. Their happy hour menu is amazing. Where can you get 2 lollipop lamb chops for 7.50$ and Mom's old fashioned MEATLOAF??? Will make you slap somebody! The pieces are hefty and smothered in a buttery mushroom gravy with homemade mashed red bliss potatoes and you know they are hand mashed because they still have little chunks of potatoes. Have been here many times but the visit yesterday compelled me to write a review. Busy day on Father's Day and no reservations but we were seated quickly outdoors with our dog. The staff was so nice to the dog and treated her like a human guest! I ordered the Santa Fe salmon wrap for the first time and WOW it was amazing!! Not sure what the sauce was that it was marinated in but it was delicious. Salmon cooked to perfection and in my opinion the best fries in Montco. My partner had the cheese steak as usual which he claims to be the best in Philly. I have never had a bad meal here and the serving sizes are very generous and always take something home. We have been patrons of Phil's for decades. Yesterday we order 2 hot roast beef sandwiches for take out. So we paid the same price as we would have paid had we dined at the restaurant which was fine however, this sandwich is served with chips, pickle, extra au jus and horseradish. We didn't receive anything other additions we just a sandwich nothing else. The bill came to $36 and change my husband gave her $40. After he got home he look and she only gave him $2.00 instead of $3.00 plus change. We were greatly disappointed. read more

Went to Phil's Tavern for the first time in a pretty long time. Just don't live over that way anymore, and some of my family used to live down Skippack Pike just a few miles away. Went tonight, on the first Monday Night of the 2022 NFL season and was expecting a decent crowd. Place was kinda empty which was kind of shocking, but at least we got seated right as we walked in. A plus Place our drink order right away and ordered food shortly after that. Waitress at first was right on top of things and was helpful with suggestions for our order. Wife and daughter both got salads which were very tasty and good size. The entrees were 2 burgers, a cheesesteak and the lobster BLT which was one of the "specials" for $24.99 I believe. The 2 burgers were cooked as requested and both good quality and size. The cheesesteak was a decent size with plenty of meat but very dry, the cheese you definitely had to look for and it just lacked cheesesteak taste and quality, for the area I'd rate that a 3 out of 10. The fries also, were a little under cooked and underwhelming to say the least. And finally I saved the worst for last. The lobster BLT was just a sandwich that shouldn't be on the menu and especially for the price!!! My wife who knows lobster sandwiches was very disappointed. The meat was scarce and the lettuce and tomato were mealy and just nothing like the salad lettuce!!! Sadly the bacon was the worst part which it was barely cooked unlike the bacon for my son's bacon cheeseburger which was cooked well with a nice crispness. Sadly spent $150 for food that I wouldn't expect to pay more than $75 for the way it was cooked and prepared... sadly, and I do mean sadly, we won't be going back to Phil's anytime soon, as I'd rather give my hard earned dollars to a Five Guys for burger and fries at still half the price where the quality is what you'd expect for your money spent, but so much tastier and precisely cooked. Had to write this after tonight's poor experience. Our waitress also disappeared too, so no refills on drinks until we were finished eating pretty much just the burgers... We also took some of Tommy's Buffalo wings home for another daughter to eat after getting done work, and she liked them a lot. So not everything was like the Lobster BLT, hence the 2 out of 5 stars. With its huge menu, this spot seems to be a local favorite. I ordered takeout and decided on the kappa spinach salad, a healthy choice with ahi tuna. Portion was huge and I couldn't finish it! The tuna was cooked well but still rare but there was too much spinach that the ratio was a bit off. It may have been better with goat cheese which is didn't get. Plenty of olives too, further affecting the ratio. Maybe this would be better in person, and I'd be open to trying again since the menu is so large and I'm sure they're not known for their salads. read more

The roll did an admirable job. The extras were not mixed in. The cheese was non existent until I saw some (unmelted) at the end of the roll. The tomatoes were weak. Love hanging out here late, getting some drinks, and having drinks with friends. Wings are great (order them well-done for extra crispy), the cheese steak nachos are perfect for sharing, tons of delicious sandwiches, brisket is pretty darn good, meatballs are the size of a softball, and everyone loves the salads. On the other end, the services is really slow late, as one server seems to wait on the entire restaurant. Could take 15 minutes to get your drink after ordering. The menu is honestly too big. I know options are great, but it take you forever to find something and it makes you question the freshness of the food. Beer list never seems to change much. I'd love to see some fun new stuff on there, or just something different. And the prices can be steep or at least add up quickly. Hard to go without spending $25-40 if you're getting some beers and even a sandwich. Would love to see more inexpensive items. I'll be back plenty. It's a great place to go for a late meal with a big group, but there are improvements that could definitely be made. read more

The food is really good, I will say that. My husband has a dairy allergy. He ordered a sandwich without cheese. When he took a bite, his mouth and throat immediately got itchy. I took a taste, and it definitely tasted like there was sharp cheese remnants. We sent the sandwich back to exchange with something else, but the waitress came back to the table with the food still in her hand. She told us that the kotchen staff said there was no cheese. We then had to explain that his mouth was itchy, and there was absolutely cheese/dairy. I had to reiterate that he had an allergy. It's absolutely ridiculous! Went for an early dinner on Tuesday. The restaurant was not crowded. Ordered Maryland Crab Soup and a sandwich. When the soup arrived, the server just put it on the table, not even in front of me. Upon tasting, it did not taste like the soup I ordered. Took a few minutes to get the server's attention and told her it was not the correct soup as you could not even see any crab in it nor did it taste correct. She said that they only use crab shavings in the soup not the real thing! Never heard of shavings in a soup that is supposed to be a crab soup. After that she did not return to our table until we were finished with our meal and asked if we wanted the check. Another server brought our check to us. I don't even know where to begin with Phil's Tavern! This bar/restaurant has been a go-to for my family and I for as long as I could remember! We recently stopped in for my mother's birthday. This was on a Saturday night, we probably arrived closer to 6:30p-7pm and we didn't wait for a minute! I was shocked! It is a large place, but very popular! I am not a huge fan of the wait staff at Phil's but that doesn't ruin the experience at all. They all seem too busy (which I'm sure they are), but then you look over by the bar/kitchen and they're all standing around there talking and on their phones. I personally didn't have any issues in which I needed staff, but it's a little off putting to me - again, this doesn't make me dislike Phil's. Now the food. SO MUCH FOOD! The menu itself is about 5 pages, front and back. If you can't find something on their menu, then I believe you just don't eat, simple as that! I did like that they have a Gluten-Free menu on the first page or so, so that makes it easy for those people with special dietary needs. They are very accommodating when it comes to anything on their menu, so again, you are bound to find something to eat. From meatloaf, to gourmet grilled cheese, to seafood - I can keep going. AND, not only is their menu huge, but the amount of food you get is incredible! I usually get 2-3 meals out of my orders! The prices are so reasonable for the amount of food and the taste of the food, just treat yourself! They have happy hour Mon-Fri (can't remember the exact times and offerings, but I'm sure someone else wrote about them). The food is delicious and the portions are HUGE. I almost always end up with half of whatever I ordered in a take home container unless I was feeling extra hungry. My faves so far would probably be the pastrami sandwich or the sloppy mashed burger. Order either or both and thank me later. They have a pretty good happy hour special for drinks and food as well and plenty of selection as far as drafts on tap. It's a local staple for the most part so you'll see plenty of regulars flowing in and out. Phil's is a neighborhood mainstay. Broad Axe is a rather sleepy intersection, but cars overflow Phil's parking lot every time. (Extra parking is available across Butler Pike). It's the local bar and tavern, with a good amount of bar seating and multiple dining room spaces that make you feel like you're in a comfy but somewhat dated house. I've been here many times over the years - it's my parents' go to for nights when they don't want to cook. Lots of people of all ages crowd the place, but you rarely have to wait for a table even at peak hours. The food is solid but just ok, big portions that are a bit more expensive than you'd think. My dad's dish is the roasted chicken, and some of the servers know his picky food preferences by now. The ribs are also sticky and spiced, a dish my mom and the Tall Man gravitate towards, but it's sometimes dry without the lathered sauce. There's a short gluten free menu available, and I've found the salmon to be pretty reliable in this category if I don't want a simple salad. Some of their veggie sides come out somewhat plain and tasteless, and another time their crab was definitely canned and tasted gritty. I don't love Phil's, but I know I'll get a reliable meal here and will be full when I leave. read more

If you're into soggy , mushy , tasteless , and skim on cheese type of steaks , this is your place. The food was AWFUL. All we wanted was a burger, and a roast beef sandwich. Most diners can handle that, and this tavern is priced like a restaurant. The burger was so-so. The gravy on the burger appeared to have come from a can. The beef was INEDIBLE - just a dry mass of boiled stuff that was impossible to chew, and had no taste at all. I couldn't eat it at all, so no dinner for me. We took it home but ended up throwing it out. The WAIT STAFF were SUPER NICE, and the place is really, really nice inside - we loved it before the food showed up, and we were shocked at the bad quality. We will never set foot there again. Went to "The" Phil's Tavern (what's with the "THE"?) last night because we had too long a wait at other bars bc of the Phillies game. Haven't been here in a million years but a tavern, how could you go wrong? Ugh. First, the prices are ridiculous. Literally insulting. $40 for a dry burger and two draft beers. Second, I ordered a burger ("Best Burgers in Montgomery County" the sign says) - dry, unseasoned, a roll like rubber. How does a tavern make a bad burger?! Fried pickles were the special app and they were crispy but the batter inside was soggy. Dessert menu came - $13.99 for pieces of cake and pie. $14 for a piece of pie! At a bar! Judging by the burger, I'm sure they would have been awful too. Oh, and the manager was snarky and a smart ass. It will another million years before I ever even drive past this "tavern". read more

The food at this place was just ok. I had the cheesesteak and it almost tasted like something I could have made myself. It was a decent portion, so maybe that's how they try to wow people. If you like large portions, this place is for you! We had a lunch party with 20 people yesterday and it was pretty good. I just had a burger and it was very good. Others had various sandwiches and entrees and everything looked pretty good. I have been here a few times in the past and have always lived their cheesesteaks and wings . It is a classic old style restaurant where not much has changed in along time. Every time I visit I always want to return but never seem to make it. Ism more of s quality over quantity person so the mammoth portions don't excite me like others, phils is definitely known for their portion sizes. My cousin ordered a meat loaf entree and it easily could have fed 2 adults and 2 small children. The sandwiches are huge too, I do have a picture of the roast beef sandwich. Bottom line , if I lived a little closer this would be a go too place for weekend lunches and casual dinners. I am not sure if I would try their higher priced entrees and steaks. Our food was brought out by a different server, I had a cheesesteak ordered hot peppers on the side along with the pickles our friends had ordered sandwiches for which needed tweaking. Hot Prime Rib sandwich - do it ! You won't regret it. My beau has been coming here for years, and his company ordering lunch often - I finally got to check this place out with him and I'm sad I didn't get a chance sooner! He recommended the prime rib sandwich, he got one as well. Fries, and a side of home made pickles rounded it out. The bread, garlic bread I might add, was awesome. We spoke not a word to each other, and just ate in silence. Giving winks and smiles to each other here and there noting how good the sandwich was. The fries were great also, requested well done. I retracted a star, for a few things. The plates were seriously old, like scratch marks and chips out of the plates, dark marks that wouldn't come off. Granted it's not a frilly place, but...I think the plates should have been replaced. The prime rib had a LOT of fat. I was able to work around it and it was still delicious, but this was seriously fatty...fattier than any prime rib I've never come across. The price, the prices of sandwiches are high - but you do get a gigantic serving. Service was stellar, friendly, attentive just enough during the busy lunch rush. This place has a lot to like. First, the food is great but it's not for those watching their figure. I tend to get a cheesesteak. Hey, I'm a tourist. :-) The staff is really nice and very welcoming. Lastly, and certainly not least, the pours are HEALTHY. 4 whole ounces to be exact. That's right. You get four ounces of liquor when you order a bourbon, scotch, whatever.
