We didn't eat on site due to covid but we picked up and the interior is literally like a log cabin - interesting choice for a Vietnamese place. The food is quite good. The banh mi was good although I personally would've liked the bun to be toasted a touch more. The spring rolls were pretty good as well. The beef stew was interesting and almost tasted more like a hybrid in between a stew and a curry. The carrots in it were big and soft but the sauce was pretty heavy on cumin. The pho wasn't bad but it was my least favorite. This comes down to personal preference but their broth for my taste was just a bit off. Personally I think you can split it with a person and still be full. I am also a big fan of their crispy egg rolls, which are $4.95. They are fresh and delicious. Oddly, I've always gotten everything to go here but I think the restaurant looks clean. It's got a log cabin kind of feel to it. The staff is exceptionally nice. I once called near the end of the restaurant hours and they still let me order take out. I really appreciated the kindness after a long day at work. I came here on a Friday afternoon at 2pm. Located right on the corner of State and 3rd Street, parking can be a little bit of a challenge given that it's downtown Los Altos. Upon walking in, I'm immediately greeted and seated with a menu. As I take in my surroundings, I appreciate the wood cabin decor, complete with a fireplace in the corner. There's plenty of sunlight pouring into the large windows, making it a very bright and homey feel to it all. Inside there are a decent amount of seating, breakdown of 5 2-person, 3 4-person, and 1 6-person tables. The 4 and 6 person tables are comprised of multiple 2 person tables so it grants more flexibility to seat a variety of groups. There's also 5 or so tables outside comprised of 2 and 4 seaters as well on the patio. The place is busy, even for 2pm. During my 20 minutes there, I saw 5 other groups and 3 take-outs. The place is quite clean, the floors could use a little mopping but I suspect it was the damage after a busy lunch shift. A staff member wiped down every table as people left. They're also all very friendly and accommodating, checking in on me every once in a while to see if I needed anything. At the end as I proceeded to ask for some to-go boxes and the check, one of the staff members told me that I could stay as long as I needed to, to take my time, and that there was no rush even though I was the only one left in the whole place (they were closing soon to prep for the dinner shift). It was really nice to hear that reassurance, it really made me feel welcome. Anyway onto the food part of the review! Since I'm a week and a half away from popping out this baby, my hungry pregnant self couldn't make up my mind of what to get, so I got both the pork bahn mi sandwich as well as a small order of combo pho. My food came quickly and piping hot. First the sandwich came - the bun was perfectly warm and toasted with a beautiful crispy crunch with a soft fluffy interior. The meat was flavorful and juicy. The veggies were crisp and fresh. Everything about the sandwich was really good, definitely one of the better bahn mis I've had. The size is quite reasonable too, came out to be maybe 10 inches long. Up next was the pho. The noodles were cooked to perfection. Just enough chew. The meat was decent, not the most tender, but pretty good nonetheless. But the real star of this dish was the broth. So flavorful, not overpowering, perfectly salted but not over. I could have downed the entire bowl of just the broth! And while I ordered a small, the portion size I'd argue is also generous. I ended up taking half the sandwich and half the pho to go at the end (and I'm usually the person you'd want to bring to an AYCE situation to get your money's worth, although arguably baby had squished my stomach capacity by a little bit these days so take this comment with a pinch of salt). Both items came out to be $22.78 before tip, which isn't the best deal, but I'm happy with the price given the quality of the food and experience. My one complaint of the entire experience is that the front door was open the entire time. While a fresh breeze was wonderful, it also welcomed a number of house flies that continually landed on me during my time there. For this I dock 0.5 stars from my total rating, but it's an easy enough fix that I lean towards a final score of 5 stars instead of 4 since Yelp doesn't allow for half star ratings. read more

What would happen if you could imagine that Vietnam has no rice fields and instead of seeing a flying lemur, pangolin or gibbon you see things such a cute bears, elks, and beautiful redwoods instead. Well welcome to the fantasy word of a place called the Pho Cabin in affluent DT LA, not the angles one but the trees one. Frankly this place has always been an outlier pho place for as long as I've been tracking these streets of town. If memory serves me correctly last pho place tried to be French as in the Eiffel Tower but it never worked and the food sucked. So when I saw hot and new on my feed and there seemed to be veggie options I was like ok let's check out the cabin. As many of you know I'm always on the hunt for a good bowl of Pho and some of my favs are in Mt View. But Los Altos is a different story. Always not worth pursuing. But I'm always willing to throw a few bucks to gamble that maybe I'm going to get a good bowl in this town. Walking in I was kind of surprised how homey the place looked from what it was prior, I mean it felt like you kind of did step into a cabin of sorts. Wood planked ceilings with pictures of what you would normally see in Yosemite or other American wildlife park. I can dig it. The menu seemed straight forward. They do a little "veggie" graphics next to items that are vegetarian which was nice. Choices are mostly tofu oriented and include thing such as tofu cubes, egg rolls and vermicelli rice bowls with tofu. And of course the Pho Chay which is always going to be my first round of order when I'm new to a place like this. Ordered that and the spring roll. Service was prompt and friendly here, they frequently check on you and fill your water glasses. Wait takes a bit longer than other places but it's not too bad. First came out the spring rolls and they really hit the spot. Nice thinly sliced tofu with carrots and rice noodles. It's was fresh and had a nice savory seasoning that made them taste great. Peanut sauce is boring but I just add a little sriracha instead. Definitely would get that again. The pho came out and it was a different story. It looked all beautiful and I was getting pumped up to dig in but one sip of the broth and I was like meah not much going on as in watery tasting and little flavor. I tried adding more jalapeños and sriracha but it still was missing something. Veggies and noodles were solid but the broth was the deal breaker. Now I know it's hard to make good veggie broth but I can go down to Pho Ave in Mt. View and slurp my way to Ho Chi Minh city heaven. This just didn't do it at least this time. Really wanted to find a regular spot in Los Altos to slurp my Pho noodles but I'm afraid for now that ain't going to happen. I'll come back to try some other veggie stuff and definitely go for those fresh spring rolls so I'm not totally giving up on this place. 3 stars for now. read more

Great new restaurant from experienced Vietnamese restaurant people. They brought the staff over from another restaurant so they were up and going quickly. The food too is excellent. We had the beef Stew - flavorful, meaty and perfectly prepared. We also had the rice and beef cubes (a version of shaking beef). Tender and oh so tasty. This is not your run of the mill Pho restaurant. They use quality ingredients, proven recipes at a fair price point. An excellent addition to the downtown Los Altos restaurant scene. I work in the area and would frequent the restaurants nearby. This was always a cute place with decent food, service was ok. But now it's under new management and the food and service has improved BIG TIME!!!! It's real authentic Vietnamese food like the places in San Jose but now closer to me.
