After a long ride on the DurangoSilverton R.R.3 hours+we went to find some vittles and found them at this joint. I had the bleu cheese and bacon burger which I couldn't finish, meat, yes bun no!, While good made it, as Rodney Allen Rippy used to say "It's too big to eat!" Mu bride had the BLT and we shared some excellent fries. We came here because out in front a sandwich board sign said " Home Made Beefstew! When seated and said stew please the waiter said "excellent choice, Sir!" a couple moments later, he said "sorry, sold out! Wah! Oh well! come here if you can, it's worth the bumpy scenic ride. Don't judge this book by the cover! The look is rustic bordering on rundown but the food and service are very good. Fresh salads (try the ___ poppy seed dressing). Good-sized portions of well-prepared foods. Not a huge menu but enough variety for most. I had the filet which was of very good quality and done as requested. Great homemade pies for dessert. Just don't get it warmed up or else specifically ask to have it thrown in the over for a few minutes. On one visit, ours was apparently microwaved and spoiled an otherwise great crust. read more

Using Yelp, I had a list of six places to eat and drink in Silverton. Five were closed. The open one was only serving drinks and said the Pickle Barrel was open. As foodies, we shy away from low-brow American food and ordered cautiously. Heck, we were at a two-Michelin starred restaurant two nights earlier but I sympathetically understand (but have never tried) to cook at 9300' elevation where water boils around 195 degrees. The dinner salad had real greens and not just iceberg lettuce, but boring. Steamed vegetables weren't mush which I demonstrated to my girlfriend by needing a knife and not just a fork to cut through them (so yes, I'm not just a foodie but also a douche), but boring. The baked potato had a semi-crisp skin, but was a little small and boring. The top sirloin steak was shockingly good. Asked for rare which means it was cooked to medium-rare (rare has different definitions depending on the type of restaurant). Medium-rare still meant the steak was juicy and soft fleshed. Regardless of the cooking, the beef was a quality cut and well worth the $22 price. My girlfriend took less risks than me by selecting dishes with more pre-prepared components like the veggie burger which she found palatable and large side of sweet potato fries which were the run-of-the-mill fries that I've had with her at many other restaurants. While at our table, a tourist walked in and shouted, "This place is a ghost town! Is this the only restaurant open?" Not 100% sure, the owner honestly replied, "Might be". Silverton was a ghost town with temporary closures of motels and B&B's. I'm 99.9% sure that the Pickle Barrel was the only place serving food that was open. So, thanks for being open otherwise dinner could have been frozen food from the town market. No great surprise that our motel room smelled like food because guests needed to nuke their own food. We will never return to Silverton. read more

Ok so one star. Yeah most reviews are 1 or 5 but let me tell you why....... We were visiting Silverton, CO which has several decent places to eat for being a small mountain town. All the good places close early here, but not the pickle Barrel. After a 6 hour hike in the mountains our family was ravished and looking for a place to eat. We were eagerly greeted by the whole staff and we were the only customers in the place. This should have been the first sign to not eat here. We sat down and right away I noticed how expensive the food was on the menu for basic foods. The waiter or waiters immediately wanted to take our picture, linger around, and pry into our personal lives ...way beyond the welcome to small town hello talk. After our meal one of the host said "I guess I shouldn't mention the "D" word", he meant dessert but who says that in such context?! Then after we said no and declined, he said "look at her she could eat 2 or 3 desserts" was he trying to get the kids to throw a fit? Weird. We left with such an uneasy feeling that maybe the staff collects the customers in their sleep from their hotels rooms or RVs. Our family was ready to leave after a brief encounter with the staff "One two the pickle barrel is coming for you" "Three four better lock your doors" Eat anywhere else and it will be much better read more

Ate at the bar...service was great, had the king prime rib!! Was delicious!! Family owned and operated owner was friendly ...was not overly busy but I believe they are at the end of tourist season...good salad and top notch prime rib...only reason I didn't give star it was I wanted to get a piece of salmon by itself...didn't care if it was half piece or full piece...just need some seafood in the diet...only way they would sell it was if I purchased the sides with it..doing this low carb thing so the potatoes bread ect is useless..typically small businesses would find a way to make it happen...but no worries was still a good experience read more

This is my favorite place in Silverton! The food is great, & the service is wonderful. It's more on the upscale for Silverton, but really- it's Silverton! With tourist season winding down, the town of Silverton was sleepy and almost deserted when we rolled in before noon. After a quick walk up and down Main Street one of the only eateries open was The Pickle Barrel. I ordered the special which was the buffalo burger with a side of cole slaw. It was decent with good flavor. Not exactly juicy and succulent but still good. The cole slaw was very fresh and had a kick too it that might have been horseradish. My sister and bro-in-law had the portabello mushroom burger and they liked it as well. But....if you are a coffee snob skip the java. They brew Folgers here. After my bro-in-law commented on the mustiness of the coffee, our server promptly offered him tea instead. That's service! I would rate this 4 star but like to raise their overall rating. Quick glance at the previous review and were mostly about the price they charge, we decide to give it a try anyway as they advertise chicken pot pie as we walked by. As soon as we sat down someone asked for our drink order, I wouldn't say friendly staff probably bc they are busy, but they are prompt. We ordered chicken pot pie and she said its $10.95, I appreciate she mentioned it since it wasn't on the menu and it's better to know at the time of ordering than seeing it on the bill later. Chili is spicy but just right. Kids chicken stripes is pricey but after getting our food I can see why, there's nothing frozen, crust on chicken pot pie were crispy, chicken stripes is freshly dipped and fried. Four layer chocolate cake is rich. Will come back again. Just check and make sure the price is ok before ordering bc the price is btwn a wide range. read more

Good burgers! Great service! We came into Silverton on the morning bus, and arrived in town about 11. Since we were on the early side, this place wasn't busy at all, which made me very happy. We sat right down, and with hardly any wait at all, were served a great burger. The waitress was very nice and helpful, and patient.
