I can't eat tomatoes or have the juice from them and every single time that I order and confirm that no tomatoes are on my sandwiches...I somehow always get home to open my sandwich and see them on. I can't eat the sandwich and I end up tossing it..every time. Happened over last weekend and Monday I called about it. Whoever I spoke to that way was very nice about it and told me that I would be refunded and the owner would call me back when he came in around noon that day. I never got a call back. I called on Tuesday morning and spoke to a different girl. She was awfully rude when I asked when it would be that I could speak to the owner she said "I'm not doing this" and hung up on me. I've thrown out one too many sandwiches and when it happened this past weekend again I decided I should probably get my money back for it at this point. It has now been almost a week and I still have not heard back from the owner and I'm still upset with the way that that girl spoke to me on Tuesday. She certainly was not the same girl that I spoke to on Monday about it. The way she spoke to me I am more annoyed about than the money. When I called back to speak to somebody else instead of speaking to her, I asked what the person's name was that I've spoken to and the girl that picked up the phone told me that she didn't know her name because she just started and had just that day so you mean to tell me that your brand new employee spoke to me that way? First time here and it's one of the best antipasto salads I've ever had, not one of those cheap ones where it's full of lettuce but an excellent variety of quality ingredients. The fact that there's seating for 15 or so is nice for a deli. And it's 2:45 on a Monday afternoon and the place is really busy so that means they must be doing something right. My husband and I found the Pickle Barrel and would occasionally pick up two sandwiches on the way to a day trip. The first time we went, was in the middle of lunch hour, crazy busy, and the lines were confusing. I asked someone in line, was this the line to order? They said no, this was the line to pick up call-in orders. The second time, we called in an order, just two simple sandwiches, toward 1:45 pm, well past the noon to 1 p.m. lunch crowd. We got there, I went to the pick-up line, was ignored for more than 10 minutes, then, when I asked, I was basically "scolded" for not waiting (while they were busy with other customers). We went back two more times (in large part because it reminded us of a place we used to go). Each time there was an issue of rudeness. Yesterday, I phoned in an order for two sandwiches, both simple, tuna on rye, was told they'd be ready in 10 to 15 minutes, then showed up 15 minutes later. In the pick-up line. Lots of activity in the other check-out line, the woman there ignored us, I assumed someone else would come to ask for the name on the order. Evenutally, someone did. 10 minutes past the 15 minutes when we arrived. Really nice woman, asked for the name. AND...there were our two sandwiches sitting to the right. Since before we came in. The offensive woman checking out, looked up and said, "Oh, you already ordered? I thought you were waiting to order." So she saw us there. She ignored us. Behavior that's typical at Pickle Barrell. But the insult to inury? I paid this person and she gave me the wrong change. By nine dollars. I had to bring this to her attention, which bothered her. When we went to the car, I was really furious! My husband said we'd just not go there again, which I was fine with. I was only willing to keep going since it reminded him of our old deli, but I really hated even thinking of going there anymore. I don't appreciate having to fight for a simple order, never mind having to insist on receiving the correct change from an employee who couldn't care less. Also, this last time, a quarter of one slice of the rye bread was hard and stale. "Let the buyer beware" is a very apt phrase if you're considering going to the Pickle Barrell: "Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, the third time indicates deliberate action or intention." I stopped in there this morning 10:00. I stood there and marveled that a deli could have 11 people working behind the counter. However, I stood there for five minutes and not one of the 11 employees asked me if I was being helped. OK..Have only been here once. Judging by the reviews, they seem all over the place. I like them because they have such a large selection and they have Boars Head which not every place does. I did not notice any issues at all with service but as said, I have only been here once. I had a Cold Cut Sandwich. I love that they pack the meat on! It is in Stratford and I have not always had the best of luck finding tasty choices i n that city. I LOVE Umberti's which is close to Pickle Barrel and I like Solerno's for pizza. This seems a good deli to me. The main reason I have not been back is I just do not get to the area much. read more

Pickle Barrel Deli is a fun, unique deli in Stratford, CT conveniently located on Main Street. They offer a daily selection of hot food including some sort of pasta, grilled chicken, rice or potatoes and a delicious, fresh made Turkey breast. Of all those options the Turkey is the best. However their signature sandwiches are where this place shines. Sure, you can get your usual deli favorites; rueben, roast beef, BLT, Italian Combo etc, but by far the standouts are the unique specialt options such as; American Combo, The Rachel, Beef Eater, Steve Special, and the Gobbler(Thanksgiving dinner in a wrap) The best and worst part of this deli are the staff. Though extremely friendly the service is extremely slow. I don't think it is without hard work but maybe their system is just a mess. I ordered ahead 10 times in a row. I arrived 15 mins later each time between 11:15 and 12. I waited an average of an extra 17 minutes each time. The wait I dont understand. Busy or not there is an army of awesomely friendly and conversational employees busting their butt. The Pickle Barrel gets 4/5 because of the friendly staff and quality food. For that extra point they need to tweak their service system. The large heavyset girl with tattoos really should not be working the front counter. Her appearance as well as her attitude= NASTY!!! To boot-there are signs all over the place-"This line to order, this line for pick-up"-etc. YET the STAFF are totally oblivious to the signs-don't follow them- and ordering and picking up as well as cashing out is just so disorganized. I've also asked the cooks and staff-several times- please wear masks or to please wear them properly-covering their nose and mouth -not hanging off their ears. I was not going to write this review-because a few weeks ago-I ordered a chicken pot pie special and it was SO GOOD!!! I was going to give the place- 1 more chance-but after today- YET- with being told YET again-there was no order- YET again- placed- after I called it in and being told this by a RUDE staff person without any apologies. They serve you whatever they want, if you order a salad with lettuce tomatoes and onions, guess what you get huge green peppers, olives, cucumbers, whatever they feel like giving you.
