SLOOOOOOOWWWWW. If a pizzeria in Jersey told you there'd be a two-and-a-half-hour wait to pick up a pizza, they'd be out of business. Tried one of their special pizzas and the "fresh mozzarella" was as lifeless and plastic as the regular mozz on the same pie. Cheese wasn't even melted, sauce was meh. Wood-fired ovens are supposed to turn out pies with bubbly, airy crusts. The pizza here was flat and doughy, like a Domino's pie. Don't know what all the hype is about. read more

Crystal River has always been a go-to vacation spot for my family and I. This particular building has housed a variety of businesses in the past 20 years but I must say; after trying the pizza, I am very excited for them to be there. For starters, the customer service is superb. They are very friendly and welcoming everytime I visit. The pizza selection is great as well. They usually have 5-6 different flavors and the slices are HUGE! My go-to is pepperoni and it is amazing! They toss it in the brick oven for a few minutes and it leaves the crust super crunchy and the cheese chewy. There's nothing better after a long day at Rainbow Springs. The salads are generous as well. Their house can easily feed 2 and the toppings are way more than I expected from a pizza shop like this. Way to keep the surprises coming. Lastly, the pricing. I was down there recently and I got 3 slices, a salad and a drink and after tax it came to $13 something. What?! Whether you are passing through or exploring all that Crystal River has to offer, I would definitely recommend adding The Pizza Joint to your "gotta visit" places. read more

I was excited to try this place because of good reviews and choice of toppings and I thought it would be worth a try despite the cost. Maybe it depends on who is working that day and how they make the pizza because the one I got was NOT GOOD. It had no aroma, no garlic taste (which was one of the toppings i had them put on) and the "extra" cheese did not seem like extra cheese (see pic) and the artichoke topping was not cut up or diced at all, just put on there in whole chunks (see pic). I noticed there was NO smell to the pizza as a drove home home and usually there is with takeaway food. Just not tasty at all. Crust way too thin. Wood fired pizza? So what?! Not worth any of the extra costs for "special" toppings or wood fired. Ate a couple of slices and threw the rest away and got Dominoes instead. After a day on the river we were starving! I'll admit I was a little nervous going to a pizza place that is part of a gas station, but the many high ratings made me the low ratings and go for it. Plus, like I said we were starving and there wasn't anything else in town open on a Sunday evening. My wife was torn between a calzone and the meatball sandwich. Staff told her to definitely go with the meatball sandwich. I ordered a large pizza with tomatoes and mushrooms. Like I said, we were starving! We topped off our order with a cannoli, which they said was out of this world. They were spot on with the cannoli. It was absolutely fabulous. The meatball sandwich and the pizza however were honestlty the worst we've ever tasted, although I shouldn't use the word taste when talking about food from this place. The meatball sandwich was "spit it out of your mouth" bad. In all seriousness we both took bites at the same time and both spit it right back out at the exact same time. We were in shock. It was the nastiest, salt filled, processed, horrible tasting excuse for a "meatball" either of us has ever had in our 50+ years of eating. The sauce didn't help any, because it was as bland and tasteless as the meatballs were salty and horrid tasting. Thank God we ordered the pizza or we would have starved. Except when opened the pizza box, there was our burnt pizza. They must have a hot spot in their oven because half the pizza was burnt black. Ok, thank God we still have half a pizza or we would have starved. Except.... YUCK! We can now tell you where to go to get the absolute worst pizza on the planet. This wasn't cheap canned sauce... this was the cheapest canned sauce ever. There was plenty of cheap canned mushrooms to go with it, and a good amount of totally bland rubber "cheese-like" substance on top. Funny thing was, the mushrooms, cheese and sauce all had absolutely zero taste. You could not tell the difference between them because there wasn't a speck of flavor to be found anywhere. This entire mess of cheap bland ingredients was placed on top of a thick, almost indescribable crust. The crust also had the complete lack of taste, like cardboard except it left you wishing they used cardboard. This thing was hard to even bite into and was disgusting when mixed with the cheap toppings. Like I said, we were STARVING, but even as hungry as we were my wife could only manage two bites from a slice, and I made it to three bites before we gave up. I've never actually been mad at a place for serving bad food, until now. We felt 100% ripped off. Don't let the family and friends reviews fool you like they did us. This place is in fact a Gas Station Pizza Joint. It ranks right up there with old hotdogs that have been on one of those roller machines for months. Bottom line: Do not eat here, unless you only walk out with a cannoli, or you are on a diet and seeking food you'll spit right back out of your mouth. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE food. And please do not send us messages asking us to change our review because this is a small family business. One of the top ten best pizzas I've ever had!!!! Blown away by this pizza joint in middle of nowhere. We had two pizzas; 1) The works 2) New style margherita with spinach and mushroom added. The pizzas are a good size. We had some left over. Tasted even better warmed up next day!! The crust was crunchy, bubbly and chewy delicious. All ingredients super fresh. Even saw one the people clipping basil from herb garden in front. Also had the joint salad with feta. Super tasty, fresh with baby spinach and spring greens. What a find! Down in Florida to take in some Spring Training Baseball Games this week and was starving on the way back to my parents place in Ocala from Dunedin. My mom remembered a friend of theirs that mentioned The Pizza Joint in Dunnellon. Asked Siri for directions and off we went! It was a ways away from where we thought it was going to be and when we finally found it we thought it was a joke! In the same building as a gas station and a small engine repair shop... lol. Well, we were starving, so what the heck. The place was packed! All 4 tables ( yes 4 tables ) were being used and they had quite the pick-up business too. We put in our order of 6 bread sticks and our 16 inch pizza ( just one size ) and waited a few minutes for a table to clear up. The front counter/order taker was amazing talking all about the business. We waited 10-15 minutes tops for our breadsticks first which were absolutely fantastic and just a few minutes later our pizza arrived. HOLY MOLEY!!! What an AMAZING pizza!!! Brick oven perfection! Not only was the food great, but the entire staff was amazing too. I can't recommend The Pizza Joint any higher! An absolute MUST if you're even remotely close to Dunnellon, Florida. read more

My husband and I are doing a "pizza quest" project in this area to find the best pie, and this place shot to the top of the list today. Wow! What a tasty crust! The wood-fired oven makes a HUGE difference. The sauce was nice, the choice of toppings plentiful and top quality, and tables were equipped with plenty of condiments (red pepper flakes, Parmesan cheese, oregano, garlic salt, etc.) to customize the excellent pie to your own personal taste. We were in the area for a tubing trip and saw the good reviews on Yelp. It's definitely a hole in the wall. Apparently the owner also owns the gas station next door. There were 3 guys behind the counter working their fannies off. They could have used another person to just take the orders. Ordered the salad, wings, and pizza. I think the guy behind the counter was in such a hurry to take my order that he didn't listen to what I was ordering. The small salad I ordered came to table as a large salad and was just ok and the wings I ordered had no seasoning on them...none. When the wings came to table I asked the guy if these were the marinated ones on the menu and he said no. Since I didn't ask for sauce he assumed I wanted the plain ones. Be sure to specify marinated wings. Pizza was best part. Crispy crust and tasty. The place was very busy that evening and the guys were really hustling but would have liked for them to offer to correct our order when we told them the order wasn't right. The Pizza Joint is a hidden gem tucked into the country side on the gulf coast of Florida. Tonight was our first visit (of what will be many) to this small cozy family owned and operated pizza shop. This pizza is cooked in a 700° wood burning pizza oven. The ingredients are fresh and full of flavor. The crust is charred by the wood fire but remains chewy and very tasty. So we were driving up the nature coast and decided to Yelp a place to eat...Pizza sounded good so we decided to try this joint (pun intended.) We pulled up and got a glance of this little hole in the wall attached to a gas station convenience store. But don't let the outside fool you. The inside was full of goodness. It is a small restaurant but they will be knocking down a wall for more space according to the owner. By the way, the owner was very friendly and great to talk to. We enjoyed the meat pizza. Delicious crust...don't let the charred crust fool you...it is meant to be like that and tastes awesome, sauce was very good and toppings were great. Could use a little more cheese, but I can understand not wanting to take away from the crust and toppings. My son had some wings that I am glad I tried...great flavor.
