Fabulous wood fired wings, better than fried! The truely home made meatballs are great on the pizza. The pizza was perfect, lots of vegetables, not too much cheese or salt. Better than south Philly, and I'm a Philly boy. If you visit Crystal River you must make the drive, it's only 10 or 15 minutes. This pizza joint is delicious! They have a wood fueled oven that just makes heavenly crust. And fresh ingredients and herbs, some of which are home grown. We had a ricotta and mozzarella cheese pizza with spinach tomato and onion. The location is actually conveniently located near Rainbow River where you can enjoy a tube or kayak ride. I mention this because after a day on the river this pizza joint is the cherry on top of a fantastic day! The atmosphere is friendly and laid back but there was not very much seating and they keep the wood pile near the seating area. This is the first time I have posted a negative review concerning a restaurant experience. While we have enjoyed "The Pizza Joint" dozens of times in the past, now the opposite is true. The original owner was a perfectionist but we are disappointed with the new owner. We might give them ONE more chance to return to the previous standards of quality. The exact menu items we enjoyed so many times in the past were left on the table, uneaten. We heard those at the next table complaining to the manager, and he said "nothing has changed," (as if it was their imagination) so we didn't take the time to complain. Walk in order counter right there, look at menu and place order, cash only. Clear glass case with many choices of fresh made slices of pizza which are huge I must say! Only serve soda's, bottled water, bottled ice tea, you may BYOB. Pizza is NY style cooked in a beautiful wood fired stove, perfection! A nice brown on the crust, our preference! Wings were so tender and the Siracha sauce was medium heat and tasty. Pizza was very good as well. Everything was nicely cooked and ingredients fresh. Pizza had a touch too much sauce but that is just our personal taste. It was a very good meal and every last morsel was consumed quickly! My personal favorite was the caprese salad. It is a bit of a kneejerk reaction to want to turn around in the parking lot - after all, let's recall the pizza you normally associate with a gas station. At worst, microwaved 7-11 slices. At best, a lukewarm Godfather's or Papa John's pie. I originally recommended The Pizza Joint to our group based of off reviews, and I had second through fifth thoughts as we walked through the parking lot. As soon as we got inside and took a look at the oven, my worries were alleviated. It isn't the best wood-fired pizza place, but it is still damn good. And there is NOTHING like this in Citrus County. We were staying in Crystal River and had no problem driving to Dunnellon to get this pizza. If everyone in your party is settled on pizza, don't think about it, just come out and get the best pizza available. read more

Friends just brought us to this pizza place that is Excellent!! Been coming to crystal river all my life and never new it existed (my loss cause we love trying all the local mom n pop pizza places we go. I think the oven is the key and delicious fresh ingredients makes this crispy hot pie so good! We got the pizza two way half sausage and half pepperoni and mushroom with Greek salad with homemade dressing that's delicious, wings and a couple adult beverages and everything was great! Went last night and got one of the last tables available. We ordered two pies, a meat lover's add garlic and the shrimp fra Diablo. Both were awesome. The service was quick and courteous. I have been there many times for take out, this was my first dine in. Place is small but nothing better than the pie right out of the wood fired oven. They only accept cash, so come prepared. We have been coming here for the last 3 years, everytime we visit Dunnellon. Don't let the location deceive you. This is 1st class fire oven pizza. The owners are friendly and welcoming and the pizza is amazing, especially thier spicy versions. My only complaint is that they are cash only. I wouldn't mind if they charged a convenience fee for cards, but having to walk next door for an atm is a turn off. If they decide to step into this century with payment methods I would definitely give them 5 stars. read more
