A small, locally owned Hawaiian spot with a lot of heart, but the poke missed the mark for me. I love supporting small businesses and I came hoping to find another great poke place. I'm slowly learning my lesson: stick to the spots that treat their fish with the care poke bowls demand. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case this time. The Kilauea bowl had great flavors, but the main ingredient, the fish, let everything else down. A few pieces were cut sashimi-style and were surprisingly tough, and many had thick white bands of connective tissue running through them, making the bites chewy instead of melt in your mouth. My mans kalbi ribs were definitely the better order. Just a heads-up for anyone visiting and on a time constraint: expect a longer wait. Ours was just over 20 minutes, which makes sense for a small operation with only two people doing everything. The island music helps pass the time, but plan accordingly. Literal hole in the wall, there was no sign on their door. We walked right by and had to double check where it was lol. On the way home from a play in Chinatown, I stopped at The Poke Shack & Grill I had found on Yelp. I had planned on ordering my own bowl but when I looked at their menu board, I knew I had to get the Angry Tuna with its red pepper to denote spicy. In fact, the woman warned me it was spicy. That was fine with me. They have cans of soda on the counter to help you choose if that's what you want. I got a diet Coke. I had a seat, got a chance to take some photos, and in a short time, my poke bowl arrived. It has creamy wasabi ahi poke, spicy tuna, crispy onions, imitation crab salad, cucumbers, avocado, jalapeño, on rice topped with sriracha. A fine meal in a bowl. It was spicy and I liked it very much. I did have some Coke to cool the mouth a bit between bites. There is much more to the menu and I'll have to go back and try other things. If you need a sign that asks people to ring a bell for service, we already off to a bad start, in my opinion. We rang the bell and were greeted and had our orders taken. we asked to dine in. During the wait, 3 groups of 2 entered. the first also laughed at the bell that summoned any sort of service, but they rang it and delivered take out. Fortunately for the next group, they came while the previous group was placing an order, so they didn't need to ring a bell! but they were sat down and offered water and had the happy hour menu explained to them. - this was a completely different "dine in" service than we were offered. but maybe if we were greeted upon entering, there would be consistency in service. then lastly, the last person to place an order, fell asleep while waiting and just left with his food in the 35 minutes it took for me to wait for my food. eat it and write this review !! to the food : chicken katsu - should not take 25 minutes. again i'm thinking staffing concerns affected this heavily. well, i hope at least. taste was fine, portion is small. I really wanted to give this place five stars, the ambiance was great, the store itself was very clean and the customer service I received from Non (the owners brother) was superb. The only issue I had was with the quality of the fish. There are plenty of other Poke spots that is "deli style" which carry a higher quality of fish. Besides the fish quality, my tuna bowl was flavorful. In "The Poke Shack & Grill's" defense, they do serve more than just poke, which other poke spots might not. Even though currently I think four stars is justified, I still do plan on coming back because of the ambiance and service. Don't walk--RUN to this place! My wife and I had passed by this spot so many times on our way home, not realizing the hidden gem it was. We usually go to a different poke place across town, but didn't feel like driving that far, so we decided to give this one a try since it's much closer. We showed up a little before closing, so our expectations weren't high. We figured the selection would be limited and the food might not be that fresh. But we were completely wrong--the staff was incredibly welcoming and never made us feel rushed. Even though we're currently doing keto, they patiently helped us choose toppings that fit our diet and still made the bowls delicious. We got our food to go, and once we opened it up at home, we were blown away. The presentation was great, but the taste? Unreal. After just one bite, my wife and I looked at each other and both said, "This is the best poke we've ever had." One thing that stood out: they explained that unlike some other places in town that use frozen fish, their poke is fresh--and you can absolutely taste the difference. We are now lifetime customers. I visited this restaurant on a weekend for takeout lunch. I tried the poke nachos ($16) and build your own poke bowls ($14-17 + extra for certain toppings). I enjoyed the nachos which have both spicy mayo and sweet eel sauce. The ahi poke tasted fresh and was well portioned with the amount of crispy wonton chips. I would get this again! The poke bowl had a base of spring mix and the included toppings left something to be desired (definitely pay extra for at least seaweed salad). I would prefer bigger cubes of fish personally. The food does take awhile to come out so maybe call ahead for takeout. This restaurant is located in a shopping center with a decent amount of parking. A+ food here... top to bottom... my go to is a triple protein create your own, with all the free toppings, half spring mix/half rice as the base, and usually a couple of the add-on ingredients... again, friggin A+... They have a legit lunch specials menu, that is extremely good value. Hit up one of their "bomb" items in there and holy hell it was delicious. Like a mini poke bowl above rice, covered in a spicy sauce. Went there for Father's Day lunch and in addition to my frankenstein inspired bowl, tried the pulled pork sliders (whole family confirmed one of the best bites of pulled pork they've ever had), the small crab nachos (really good, and good value) and some katsu sliders (a+)... saw the table next to us order a burger... holy hell... looked amazing. It would be hard to pass up the poke, but I may make a trip next time I'm specifically looking for a burger. Only caution I have, is they do seem to be in island time haha. Some places, you pop in, they slope raw sauced fish in a bowl, toss-it like a mad man and slop it in a to-go container... they create legit masterpieces haha. I came during their grand opening and I absolutely love how friendly all the staff are! When you come in you order at the front and everything is made to order. The restaurant is clean and has welcoming decor. I ordered a Thai iced tea with boba. The boba was surprisingly fresh and the Thai tea was pretty decent. The boba comes with the order. As for poke, I ordered the Super LV which had salmon, crab salad, edamame, cucumber and rice. Everything was pretty tasty. Cute little place to enjoy a poke.. It was my first time visiting, and I really felt satisfied. We were greeted warmly. The server at the front was a sweet young lady who suggested some ideas and was not bothered at all from all of our questions . The food arrived quickly and it was delicious. Just so you know the portions are big (I mean it was for us), we thought we could get one type of bowl and share, but the bowl is really rich with the ingredients, and I can tell you it could feed 3 maybe 4 people, not only 2 . I've been coming here a lot the past few weeks, I've tried several things off the menu and all of it has been delicious! I highly recommend this place for anyone that loves poke. Yesterday I unfortunately had a bad encounter with one of the workers who was talking rude and aggressive to me so I left. Today the owner called me and apologized for his behavior and we had a good conversation and I really appreciate the transparency and communication. Coming from a service Industry background I totally get people have bad days and the frustration that can come with a busy day can be overwhelming so for me it's all water under the bridge! I can't get enough of the Lau lau, it was so juicy, smoky, and flavorful. It was my favorite. Had kalbi ribs as my other protein and loved its marinade and sweetness. And the poke was so refreshing. My friend and I went to this restaurant as it popped up on my Instagram feed and looked enticing. We ordered the Nacho Sampler, The Hawaiian, and The Angry Tuna. The Nacho Sampler was good, but we only liked the Salmon Poke Nachos and the Ahi Poke Nachos. The Kalua Pig Nachos portion was okay, but we did not enjoy to Lomi Salmon part of it. We thought the Lomi Salmon was "too mushy" and expected it to be a little more "chunky." The Hawaiian was okay (I took off the Lomi Salmon before eating it), but the two other pokes (Shoyu Ahi and Limu) did not have much of a flavor difference to me. My friend enjoyed The Angry Tuna but stated that it didn't have enough sauce for her liking and that the fish did not taste as fresh as she hoped. She also stated that the Thai Tea she received was "too watery" in her opinion. The place itself is cozy and the staff were helpful. The tables were semi-clean, but we did notice some hair on the table when we sat. The white plates that we received we did not use as they had some smudges of some sort on them (possibly fingerprints? I'm unsure).
