Solid option in Ann Arbor, really surprised by the low reviews wheres I think there are wayyyy worse options in AA food wise that has better Yelp reviews but that is just my two cents. I've come here for dinners and the food has been great both times, with decent prices. Solid selection of beers. Was able to even snag tables here after big football games. I am a Super Fan of the Pretzel Bell, historically known for serving up to University of Michigan fans! The decor is all Michigan sports with many televisions throughout. The main dining area caters more toward families, while the downstairs bar is definitely for sports fanatics with a wall of televisions behind the bar. The downstairs bar has a fun atmosphere, replete with bell to ring on your birthday, and a vending machine of beer where you can test your luck for $2.50 - Will you receive a lowbrow canned beer or something fancy in a bottle? A fun test of fate. ;-) The food is served as overly generous portions that include bar favorites of burgers and chicken sandwiches to great appetizers to share. The chorizo meatballs were a personal favorite! As my final argument as to why The Pretzel Bell is Ann Arbor's best new bar/restaurant for sports or a good meal with family and friends: I found myself there everyday this weekend! We stopped in for lunch on Mothers Day. It was a beautiful day so we chose to sit outside. Very nice outdoor space and the inside of the restaurant has plenty of seating. The food was good and the service was as well. It was very busy so I think the wait time was appropriate. We had the soft baked pretzel (of course!) and is was good but nothing special. The fish and chips were very good and a huge portion. We also had the Grain Bowl which my daughter liked and I had the PBell Crunchy Bird chicken sandwich. Everything was good. We went to pretzel bell while visiting Ann Arbor and it was great! The staff is wonderful and accommodating. There are a lot of gluten free options as well. I had the nachos, made without any tomato product because of an allergy, and they made it perfectly. They even added a plain grilled chicken breast instead of their regular seasoned chicken. My fiancé had a chicken sandwich which was great, and my friend had the meat and potatoes, simple and delicious. We'd definitely return! read more

Came here with some friends tonight before going out in Ann Arbor. Pretzel Bell is relatively new (well, kinda, if you know its history) so we were curious to try it out. I had the blue cheese burger ($12) but with Swiss since I hate blue cheese. It came with a tomato bacon relish and lemon aioli, which also came with the sea salt fries. The waitress also let me try the curried peanut sauce with the fries, as that was another option, and it was okay, but I liked the lemon aioli better. PB would have gotten 5/5 stars from me except the service was a little slow - our waitress was very nice but we waited a bit for forks/napkins as well as water refills. That being sad, the food was extremely tasty and next time I'm getting the fried chicken sandwich, as it's pickle-brined and sounded delicious. read more

Ambiance, service, and my dessert was great-a huge bowl of ice cream topped with caramel and giant pretzel bread bites for a shockingly low price can serve as your meal by itself. However, I'm writing this 5-star review because of what happened after I accidentally forgot my debit card. This is honestly only the second time in my life I accidentally forgot my debit card. The first time, I was lucky that the card was going to expire the next day (maybe I subconsciously chose to leave it?). This second time, it wasn't expiring anytime soon and it took two days for me to look in my wallet and notice it was missing. I called and they were so compassionate to me, which carried over when I arrived back in person at the restaurant to pick it up. The same waiter who served me two days ago was there when I showed up. Not only was he understanding but also while I waited for the manager with my card, he made me feel comfortable by chatting with me about our hometowns. The host at the ​front also joined us and provided some comic relief. A blessing in disguise that I received ​one of the greatest customer services I've ever had. There are plenty of restaurants in A2 I need to try out before my 16-month grad program ends. But if anyone from my classmates to family visiting asks me to suggest a new restaurant to try out in town, I'll take them back to Pretzel Bell. read more

Quick summary of my experiences here: yummy, nice service, cool interior, a little pricy for what it is.. That being said, I still like it and hope it sticks around. So usually it'd be a 3.5 but I'll bump it to 4. So far I've come twice and both experiences have been decent. Service is quite friendly and fast, waiters know the menu well and are sociable and fun. The interior is pretty unique, there's some sort of ship motif going on here and a lot of Michigan school pride decals. The trend with the food is that it's portions are nice and tasty - but overpriced. I've tried the crunchy bird burger, sweet potato fries, pbell fries, and the pbell burger. I think the crunchy bird was my favorite, generous portion of chicken and fries on the side, the chicken was crispy but juicy, satisfying. At $14 for the burgers and fries, it's a little hard to say it's worth it. None of the items are special, they're just well made versions of common foods. But not that well made ya know? It's not expensive compared to the rest of Main St but the place isn't exactly upscale or super special so it's understandable for someone to be disappointed if they came here expecting a nice Main St restaurant. Likewise if you just wanted a casual burger place and came in and saw the prices, it's also be a bit shocking. So it's just a weird combination and I think if Pretzel Bell was on State St or something and everything was 20% cheaper, it'd be a lot more favorable. All in all, I'd say give it a try. They have different deals every day of the week and happy hour is nice, drinks end up being not that expensive if you're not getting a cocktail. read more

Yesterday was nice-out day for our son at University of Michigan. We were excited and looked forward to celebrating at Pretzel Bell in one of their cozy booths with yummy Detroit style pizza. We arrived to a fairy empty restaurant. Told by hostess all booths were dirty - give her a few minutes to have one cleaned. We dashed to restroom... Upon return to hostess stand, I caught the end of a rude conversation between the hostess and a waiter (large dude with a Mohawk and arm tattoos). Waiter with Mohawk: You can tell them they can continue to wait until I have time to clean a booth or they can sit anywhere else and be served now. He was clearly agitated, wasn't planning on cleaning a booth for us - and was upset with the hostess for promising he'd do something to welcome a customer. When my wife returned from restroom, I explained and she first wanted to wait...after 10 minutes and no movement, we walked out and across the street to Jolly Pumpkin - please read my fab review and pics! Maybe the waiter dude with Mohawk was just having a bad day.. I don't know -- but again, the Pretzel Bell was fairly quiet for a Tuesday night. There were two waiters; it only takes 30 seconds to clear a table (used to be a bus boy). Came here for dinner with some friends and had a good time! The interior is really cute, and it wasn't too crowded at 6 pm on a Thursday. We started with the soft pretzel and the Brussels sprouts. The soft pretzel was so delicious and came with a honey mustard sauce and melted cheese. The Brussels sprouts were also pretty well done! For dinner, I had the varsity burger. It was pretty good, although the meat is shredded instead of a patty like I expected. I also got a berry mule which was delicious! I'll start off by saying the pretzels are amazing. If you have a particular food item in your name, they better be! I didn't even get a chance to try the mustard dip, because the warm cheese sauce was that addicting! The decor is simple, yet appealing, staff members are helpful and accommodating, but the rest of the food is meh. I tried the nachos sans pork and they were probably the least flavorful nachos I've ever had. Not because it didn't have the pork (the meat eaters with pork nachos gave them a thumbs down too), but because it was lacking something - queso, jalapenos, lettuce, maybe? Also it comes with an almost sweet bean/chili type sauce which isn't listed as an ingredient on the menu. The nachos would have been better without it. I was torn between the chickpea burger and the mac&cheese (the two veg options, minus a salad), but after reading bad reviews about the mac, I opted for the chickpea burger. I love garlic, but wow. WAY TOO MUCH. Luckily the sauce balanced out the flavor so it was palatable. The side salad was plentiful and very fresh. Came here during restaurant week for lunch. The inside has really cool memorabilia, definitely a cool place to grab a drink and watch the game. The pretzel bell is a relaunch of the same restaurant at a different location. They where open from the 30' to the 80's, I believe than closed. After Lena took a turn for the worse the owners decided to revive pretzel bell. To start we ordered the pretzel, I mean it is in the name right. Gotta say the pretzel was absolutely delicious and really enjoyed both the honey mustard and cheese sauce, $7 dollars, I thought was a little pricey, thought it should be more like $5, but, I probably would order it again it was that good. For entree we ordered the pretzel coated fried chicken and the salmon club sandwich. The chicken looks like it is burnt, but that is just from the pretzels they use, it was actually cooked perfectly. However, the fried batter was a little bland, would like to have more aioli sauce in every bite, or they should serve the honey mustard with the pretzel as a side sauce. The salmon club was nice and flavorful no complaints. I am definitely going to be back to try some of their other menu items and happy hour. read more

First off I will say that I stumbled upon this place with my boyfriend spontaneously. Their food is absolutely delicious. I am vegan and they offer tons of plant based options with phenomenal flavors. Alex the server is the best I've had in a while. I was in there couple weekends ago on a Monday hungover with my boyfriend. I ordered the speciality cocktail berry rhubarb Moscow mule. Due to my hangover, I barely touched my drink. My boyfriend and I split it over the time span of one hour. We ordered their breath taking Brussels sprouts, fish n chips and their grain bowl salad. After eating a bit, I ordered an Oberon. I also took time to sip on that. Then finally I had one more Oberon before I was told by the server I had to be cut off by the manager. Note that I am TIPS certified, servSafe certified, and have a culinary degree. I am an industry gal if you will. We were not loud, not rowdy or inappropriate by any means. I have never been so offended before in a restaurant. It wasn't the servers fault. The cowardly manager told the server I was cut off for absolutely no reason without giving a reason. The best thing about pretzel bell is their drinks. Great beer selection and a ton of great cocktails. But they also have a ton of mocktails for those under 21, which is great for the fam. The food is good, good bang for your buck. The appetizers are the best, we always order a bunch for the table like small plates instead of individual meals. The service is average. During lunch it can be hard to get your waitress's attention, but around dinner they're usually around more. But that's pretty common in a restaurant when it's slower. Overall, a good restaurant and a staple for Ann Arbor. They utilized a lot of their old building and make it feel like a fun place to be yet also somehow it's cozy and homey. Meh. Been in here a handful of times. The "meh" is mostly for the food. The atmosphere is pretty cool in the basement and the service has always been solid. Their pretzel is pretty dinky for $8. It was fresh out of the oven at least. Heard they had Detroit style pizza, so I was excited to come in and try it. It had the unique ability to appear perfectly done/browned on the outside, but was raw in the middle. I was starving so I still ate it. Granted, not every bite was raw, but it was lacking that crisp, yet pillowy crust I expect when someone is advertising Detroit style pizza. Ran into someone I know and he said the pizza is raw "every time." Anyway, if you're looking to feel like a 21-year-old again, or play some bar games or trivia, the basement is worth a look. I stopped by during happy hour which really included everything I wanted to try: Soft pretzel (5/5) - I got this without the salt. It was super soft and buttery. Huge pretzel for $2 during happy hours, it honestly MADE MY DAY. The honey mustard sauce is yummy, but I was not a fan of the beer cheese. It tasted processed as per previous reviews. Meat and potatoes (4/5) - For how much gravy was over it, it was still super crispy. My only complaint was that it was pretty salty (the fries, gravy, and brisket all had salt in it, so together it was salt explosion). I definitely would come even if it's just for the pretzels. This place has all the workings of a fun new restaurant on Main Street, but there were a few things that were off the night I was there. We sat down at a table in their patio section (which is huge and awesome!) and ordered drinks. After we ordered, another table right next to us sat down. Throughout the meal, the table next to us had a perfectly timed experience and yet timing was the major problem for us (same server). Our drinks took about 10 min, appetizers took 20 more (while said table next to us had already enjoyed their apps and were being served their entree) and then our entrees came out with our appetizers! The waiter apologized profusely and we are pretty laid back, but it definitely was a quirk. For appetizers, we tried the pineapple wings (can't remember the exact name) and the peanut curry fries! The fries were outstanding! Still thinking about them & craving that combination! Wings were good but not nearly as memorable. For an entree, I had the pickle brined chicken (fried) with mashed sweet potatoes & brussel sprouts. Hubs had the carnitas tacos. My meal was decent - the brussel sprouts were heavy on the salt, the sweet potatoes were perfect, the chicken was good and perfectly crisp, but didn't taste any pickle flavor at all, which I was a little bummed about. Carnitas were better - the verde salsa on top is to die for! This place has a lot of cool potential. The name is a little strange...makes it seem more casual than it is. I had never been to the original Pretzel Bell, but my mom wanted to celebrate my birthday at the new version. I can't compare to the old one for menu or decor. Let's just say it was an OK place to have a family event. We had an 8-place table near the front where we could glance at the UofM sport of the day (softball) on TV while we waited for lunch. Well, half of us. There was not a TV facing the other direction. We were not there for the TV, so it was OK. When I knew we'd be going to Pretzel Bell, I did what anybody with a restricted diet would do -- I went to the website to check out the menu. The page of lunch items said I could build my own salad. There was nothing else on the menu that would not require major deletions or revisions. It sounds boring but I was looking forward to a birthday meal of lettuce dressed up with all kinds of nuts and seeds and carrots and cucumbers topped with some kind of protein. Except that the "pick your own ingredients" salad is NOT available for lunch! That meant I had to go with one of their regular salads, the Orchard Salad, however, all I could actually have was lettuce and apple slices. No to the candied walnuts, which were quite sugary once they arrived, no to the cheddar cheese and no to the gluten-laden pretzel croutons and the dressing because I would not know what was in it. BOOOO-RING! OK, I can have a chicken breast if it's really plain. And I add my own dressing that I bring myself because I can't trust a vinaigrette with "natural flavors" added. I believed the website. I had not brought my own salad sprinkles (nuts and seeds). Plain lettuce and plain meat bores me to tears. So why don't I just bring my own entire meal and then I can have something I like? Oh, and the side order of Brussels sprouts was generous but they were all burnt tasting instead of caramelized. I think the fire they incinerated them in was just too darn hot. I'm never going back to Pretzel Bell because they simply don't have anything to offer me besides lettuce and chicken or a bare hamburger patty. Hey, don't blame me for needing the special diet. Thank your lucky stars you don't require one yourself. If you can eat anything you want, try the potato chips that they bring to the table, sprinkled with tons of mystery spices. You can get burgers and pickle-brined fried chicken sandwiches and such. My hubby said the choices on the menu were a bit slim at lunchtime. He expected more variety. He said he didn't like the sound of "pickled" chicken, so he passed on that one. He ended up getting the Pretzel Bell burger, and asked to have the blue cheese on the side, but it arrived on top, so he slid it off. Just a little of the flavor was more than plenty for him. My friend got the same salad that I had but had asked the kitchen to chop it up fine for her so it would be easier to eat. It arrived with big lettuce pieces, so she had to chop it herself anyway. I think she had the right idea, since my lettuce pieces were somehow difficult to stab with my fork. So, after my own modification, the salad was slightly nicer. Continuing my saga of yesterday evening after leaving one restaurant due to terrible service and not so good appetizers. My coworkers and I hungrily decided on this spot. We were met with very friendly and eager staff members. Our server was super nice and helpful. We ordered the baked pretzels and Wolverine wings as an appetizer. Both were good but the pretzel was amazing! Now to our dinner: I ordered the North Quad noodle bowl with chicken, and everyone else had the carnitas tacos, chicken Caesar salad, and the Pickle-brined Chicken. The Quad Noodle Bowl: Although the grilled chicken in the noodle bowl was tasty and full of flavor, the broth locked in flavor and amount. It made the bowl very dry. Very bland. Too many noodles and the noodles need to be a smaller size/shape to help absorb the flavors from the broth. My coworker thought the carnitas tacos were tasty, and chicken Caesar salad eater had zero complaints. Pickle-brined chicken eater liked the chicken but was not loving the 'au gratin potatoes' as a side. I must say, the au gratin was very different on appearance and taste. We opted for outdoor seating because the air was set too low inside, and it was quieter outside. Our quick bite to eat for lunch turned into an hour and a half. Words of wisdom--don't come here if you don't have time to wait. We waited for someone to show up at the hostess stand. We waited for our waiter. We waited a long time for our food. We waited for the waiter to bring extra plates. We waited for our waiter to bring ketchup for the rather bland $16 burger. We waited for a box for leftovers. We waited for a smaller box. We waited for the bill. We waited for the waiter to pick up the bill. There are also positives to our experience here. My in-laws shared a cheese steak sandwich. There reported it as spicy, but in a good way, and said the sandwich was great. My daughter's wings were meaty and cooked perfectly. The BBQ sauce was too spicy for her taste, so she used the honey mustard that came with the giant pretzel. We all agreed that the mustard is delicious, and we'd buy it by the bottle. The warm pretzel was light, fluffy, and wonderful. I don't think anyone even tried the cheese sauce because the mustard was so good. The Jones burger I split with my husband was ok. It needed something extra, so I added a healthy serving of ketchup (that we had to retrieve ourselves after waiting over 5 minutes for the waiter to bring some out). The bottom bun was sliced too thin and was too small for the burger, but it was quite tasty. Overall, the food was good. Nothing special. I lived in Ann Arbor for four years, and I never had a desire to dine at Pretzel Bell. During a recent weekend visit, my friends and I ate here, mostly because it was a big football weekend, and the wait for a group of eight was too long everywhere else. When we sat down, our waitress served us some complimentary kettle chips. I thought this was a nice touch, and my friends and I finished them pretty quickly. Unfortunately, we had to remind the waitress a couple times before she came back with a refill. I ordered the Crunchy Bird, and I enjoyed it! I thought it was delicious, and I liked the texture. The fries, however, were quite lukewarm. There were even a few that were cold. The service could be improved quite a bit, and this restaurant wouldn't be one of my first choices in Ann Arbor. We sat down at the bar and ordered a drink. The bartender was great and friendly. The drinks, not so much. It was one of the worse mixtures of a long island and a margarita that I have ever had. Maybe it was because it was pretty busy but not sure that's a great reason because I have been to many of busy locations. Maybe it was this particular bartender. I would like to add that this is a younger persons spot but I did not feel out of place. No one was looking at me like who is this older guy? Anywho.....Hey, there's a dance floor, I don't do this often but Lets Dance! The DJ was great and played some great dance music. The music was flowing and I danced up a sweat. I'll admit that at first, there were more things I didn't like than things I liked at Pretzel Bell. The basement bar has a very bro-ey vibe, and the place gets packed on weekends. But that aside...it's a really fun place for going out with your friends on a Friday night. Their DJ's are consistently on point, and they have a decent tap list. My go-to drink, though, is actually their "mystery machine." For $2.50, you leave your beer choice up to fate and whatever comes out of the machine is your drink. I've gotten everything from Founders IPA to Natty Light. It's a risk, but the price is right! They also have plenty of games, like Jenga and ping pong. And the sheer amount of space they have is unrivaled. So if you need a place to catch up with your crew over beers and ping pong, Pretzel Bell is your place. read more

This place just opened this week so we decided to come check it out. The interior is...interesting. Lotta Michigan paraphernalia around and on the walls. Apparently you're allowed to etch onto the tables (I guess using your utensils?), there were some rather unfortunate etchings on our table. Our table was six inches from the table next to us. Guy sitting down got a view from behind as I squeaked past. Some of the other tables are ensconced in the wall in like little alcoves. Their menus are Manila folders. Burgers, meats: steak, prime rib, duck confit, etc. Their alcohol is listed in a leather binder. Decent beers, wines, and cocktails. (They serve Coke products but not listed anywhere on the menus) All of their food and drink are named after Michigan--to varying degrees of unsuccess. The food was okay. My friend's Potato Tots' we're just mediocre tater tots. My other friend got the fries with the herb lemon aioli that everyone really enjoyed. My other friend said there wasn't enough cheese with her Mac and Cheese (which is cooked in chicken stock). My prime rib was good but really needed a suave like some au jous or something. The potatoes au gratin were really congealed together and also mediocre. The roasted brussel sprouts were astounding fantastic. All in all it was an okay experience. I've been here twice and both times the food was great! The pizza and salmon are both great options although the salmon is a bit small. Inside, there are a few booths which are really nice since they have walls for more privacy. Additionally, the food is always fast to come after ordering, even when it's busy. The only reason I wouldn't give this five stars is the price. Don't get me wrong, I love the food, but it's just a bit more than some other nearby restaurants that are very similar. read more
