After a morning visit to Tate Modern, we stumbled across this establishment - a gin bar! (The English are wonderful.) They have the largest selection of gin I've ever seen and once our server realized we were gin connoisseurs, he brought over all kinds of bottles to show us. We tried amazing gins and the food was fantastic to boot. My goat cheese and leek tart was fantastic as was the banofee pie. During our visit, there was a parade outside for the Queen's birthday. Our server said "Tourists! There's a parade outside for the Queen's birthday! Don't you want to take pictures?" We replied "No, we have gin." Sadly, we were only in London for two days and didn't have time for a return visit. On our next passage through, we will be sure and make a stop here (maybe plan an entire day). Service staff is pleasant, food came quickly, Ambiance is old English pub which is great fun, moderately loud Noon on Tuesday. Both order Fish & Chips w/mushy peas & €5 side salads. Huge filet of haddock, handful of chips, small cuppa mushy green peas (why peas vs slaw?). Note: salt prevails here! Fish very well cooked, skin on one side, moderately coated, crispy and tasty. Forget the tasteless salty mush passing for peas. Salad was fresh and small but dressing was weird combo of salt, pepper and oil. Once we squeezed lemon + sprinkle of malt vinegar taste diluted the salt to reasonably high level. read more

Great local pub stones throw away from Hyatt Blackfriars where I was staying. We liked the food very much we came back here twice. Fish and chips, chicken and mushroom pie, and wings were great. The bartender and wait staff were very friendly and this pub closes late, unlike the other pubs nearby. Saturday night though the music was pumping loud and lots of more of the younger crowd filled up. Be careful not sitting in the reserved seats, as they will ask you to move to another table. We've been coming to Punch's for oven ten years. I used to ADORE it. It's still a gorgeous venue with an awesome gin selection. The food is still solid (it used to be amazing so not sure if they switched chefs . . .) but here was my bummer of an experience this last visit on Monday. It's small, but it irks me. We were greeted by a rather cavalier bartender (he thought he had our drink choices pegged---he didn't) but he charged me for a double wine when I didn't ask. And it's my fault for not saying something when I paid the bill, but he had disappeared into the back and two other very nice women were behind the bar. Then when I talked to my partner, we realized, after we left, there was a service fee. Which makes me think the double charge was deliberate to inflate the 'tip' the barman received. Again, not major, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

After a bit of a rocky start- there was no one working in sight and no sign. We sat ourselves as there were menus on the tables and others sitting. My children and I picked menu items as a waitress emerged serving other tables but clearly ignoring us. After about 15- 20 minutes of this and other tables after us getting served, I asked the waitress if I should be ordering from the bar (bar tender came and went quite a lot) and was told no but I was not seated by her. Please note all the people after us also sat themselves but maybe received service bc they were English? Anyway, I simply asked her if I had made a mistake of some sort, could she not have just explained it to me? I gathered my things and offered to leave as clearly we were not being treated as the others to which she quickly changed her tune and attitude. I can never understand why people do this type of thing. If there is an issue or a mistake just let me know, passive aggressive behavior just isn't productive. Anyway, the food was excellent. We tried this place twice on our last trip and it was great both times. Forest time was as part of a local historical pub tour and we liked it so much we went back again before leaving London. Cool pub with great gin selection. Enjoyed my fish and chips and my daughter had the fried chicken sandwich which she said was good even though it was dry. Their award winning meat pies are something to write home about. The place can be crowded after work. It was worth the wait for a table. My first experience coming here for dinner after a few drinks at another bar. My co-workers all order their meat pie and I ordered their fish and chips. Pretty disappointing. The staff seemed quite confused and incompetent, the wi-fi wasn't working, the pie was dry, the beer selection mediocre. The food took a long time to arrive, and before that, they had tried to give us someone else's order. I had almost no phone signal, so I connected to their Wi-fi, but was told that they didn't have wi-fi. When I pointed out that they did, the staff conceded that they did have wi-fi, but it didn't work. Gorgeous listed building with a nice interior, strangely (we'll come to that in a minute) set up as though it's a restaurant rather than a pub. Which it clearly is. Victorian. Pub. Not filled with tat. only 2 ales, but Tribute and Hobgoblin (someone went to Cornwall?) Then they've got food. There's some sort of special which is a fiver each night from 5-10 or so. Last night? Fish & chips, Which looked at least decent. I'd go back for that. My mate got the "British Empire list-of-adjectives Platter". Which may or may not come with two glasses of wine. Ours didn't, but there was some confusion about that. Everything on the platter (£9!?!?) came from a frozen bag o' things. Samosas. Spring rolls. Chicken tikka. Mini sausages. It was like a bad joke someone came up with while stoned. It was actually pretty terrible. But, as my friend said, "at least it's fried". Then, there were the tables. They weren't proper pubby tables at all-- more resto tables. But we were clearly in a pub. Or at least a tavern. Not to pricey. Clean bathrooms. Just don't get the food. Or don't expect much from it. Pretty darned delightful. After taste tests, I settled on a bright and rich Tempranillo. Small plates: roasted/ spice aubergine topped w yogurt and pomegranate seeds - - amazing flavor-- and baby calamari w garlic aioli and seriously hot pepper slices. Grabbed some food prior to our pub crawl walking tour. This place had a very cool, hip inside. I'm not a gin drinker, but that was their forte. We did have really good food at this place. I had the fish and chips. The batter was incredibly light and crisp. My wife's pie was excellent (so much so that I finished off the extra crust that she couldn't finish). We didn't order food, only drinks. I really want to give this tavern a better rating... nice atmosphere, good hang spot, extensive gin & tonic menu (the reason we stopped in)... but both bartenders made our gin cocktails incorrectly. These were specialty gin & tonics that were on their drink menu, and each time we ordered they either gave us the wrong tonic and/or garnish, which was what seemed to make each cocktail unique - besides the gin. We got the Hendricks (cucumber and elderflower tonic) and the Chase GB (Mediterranean tonic and orange). They garnished the Chase with lemon instead of orange, and gave us two Indian tonics for both cocktails. Second round, we ordered another Hendricks and a Bulldog (Mediterranean tonic and grapefruit), again receiving two Indian tonics and the Bulldog garnished with lemon instead of grapefruit. I had to ask the bartender to fix them. The drinks were delicious, but it really put us off that the bartenders didn't even know how to make the cocktails on their own menu. I'm glad we came here though, because it has given me some ideas for crafting interesting g&t's once we come back home to the US. read more

Nice little boozer, the bar staff were all welcoming and were quick to take our orders as we wanted food. The atmosphere was pretty good for a Sunday afternoon, especially for a city pub. Don't expect a cheap pint but it's certainly no more than any of the other pubs in the area. We all had pies as they seemed to be the speciality. I went for a shepherds pie, but I was left a little disappointed. The portion was decent but it was mostly mash with a slither of mince in the bottom.... It also looked like it had spent a bit longer under a heat lamp than required. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their options though. read more

Damn good fish and chips here. Sizable portions but didn't leave me feeling like I had a bowling ball in my stomach (a common aftereffect of eating British F&C, I've found). They include some peas and pickle slices so you can at least pretend it's healthy. And best of all, the F&C is on lunch special a few times a week so it runs only GBP 6.50. The innards of this old place, which used to be the favored haunt of the editors and writers of the old British satire mag Punch, has a great olde Victorian vibe and is festooned with classic cartoons from the magazine's heyday (though not, blessedly, any of the racist ones comparing Irish people to monkeys). Is it touristy? I don't know what this means. It's in the City of London so you're going to get some tourist traffic inevitably, but I saw mostly office worker types on their lunch break. It definitely doesn't have the hokey generic vibe of the places with huge "AUTHENTIC BRITISH PUB" signs right outside their doors. So yeah, I dig it. read more

Fun pub quiz night, but not sure if it would be destination in the future. It's a nice enough pub, friendly bar staff and good priced food menu, with daily offers. I had a quite disappointing dish of 'Sweet Potato wedges' with basil and parmesan, which was essentially a sweet potato cut into large quarters, with a small drizzle of pesto and a tiny sprinkling of parmesan. We did have a selection of small food snacks as part of the quiz, which included a mini burger and fish and chips, which was better. A very vibrant pub on Fleet Street offering unique interior and good food with a decent selection of drinks. The food is nice but don't be fooled by the menu online - they do serve freshly cooked, wholesome food but you only get a selection of the menu and this changes based on what they cook that morning. That said, the food is very well cooked and the choice is rather good. They serve some of the best pies in the city and the wine selection is worth a look too. For me the noise can be unbearable - you find yourself hoarse after having to shout at your companions to be heard. read more

An interesting pub that offers something different from the rest of Fleet Street. With its huge mirrors, quirky interior, fish-task, and candle-lit atmosphere it is a far cry from the old O'Neills just round the corner, or Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese on the other side of the road. As well as standard Fullers ales (all of them well kept and well served) it seems to excel at spirits, with a good selection, superb service, and decent knowledge of cocktails. The food is nothing to write home about (and on my last visit took an age to come and then only after a couple of queries) but by the same token it doesn't really set itself out as a foodie pub. read more

Mrs. B and I are very glad that we selected the Punch Tavern for our lunch in Blackfriars. I had a nice, cool glass of cider and she had a very tasty ale. The bangers and mash were very nicely seasoned, and the shepherd's pie is creamy and delicious. The waitresses were also very patient with us as we made our way through the menu, since we Americans don't always know exactly what we're asking for! This was a great spot! Skip the beer and drink the Gin! Order an English Rose or a premium Gin and tonic. The first night we had a pie. It was great! Very non traditional for an American, but the food and Gin brought us in for another meal. Tried a mushroom tart. Yummy! Met a some old GS colleagues here after they left work. Even while not having a previous reservation, the wait staff was very helpful in securing me a table for me and my friends. While waiting, I decided to try the £5 meal of the day which happened to be the fish and chips!! Service was quick and the meal was delicious. Fish was a generous portion of cod and salty enough to the point that all it needed was a little ketchup and vinegar. The tartar sauce they provided was also pretty darn good. In addition the chips were hot, cripsy and delicious. The drinks were also pretty reasonable at £3-4 for a wide selection of beers. My friends arrived and were promptly served with beers of their own and a mixed platter of various bar food that they seemed to have enjoyed. Also ordered the £2 dessert that came with the special (it was an apple crumb that came out hot, gooey and yummy). They charged me full price for it instead of £2 (my fault, should have had them change it). Verdict: Good decor, great food, and good for groups (we had a group of 5 people in the end who were easily accommodated on a busy Friday afternoon/evening). All in all a very solid experience and I would come eat/drink here again alone or with a group of friends. read more
