The theme, "Purple Pig" is genius. The people working here are really nice. The ambience is okay. Old school music was good but the volume was too much to bear. How can you relax and have a conversation with your friends or a date if you can't hear yourselves think? The service is nonexistent and that's fine because it's your basic fast food concept. Not a problem. However, the food is more industrial based than true Texas BBQ. My brisket was very dry. They slather a lot of BBQ sauce on top of your meat. Why? Because the meat is either old or dry or both. Mine was very dry. The beans were drenched in sugar. The Mac and Cheese lacked (cheese) taste. We love good BBQ. This is not good BBQ. The place is cute and the parking lot is across the street. When you walk in it is true to its theme of the purple pig. It was clean and staff was welcoming. I ordered the pulled pork combo with Mac and cheese on the side. My husband ordered the brisket plate with a side of Mac and cheese and potato salad and a Sweet tea. We also ordered and pulled pork combo to go for our son. To me the pulled pork was okay. I think it needed more bbq sauce maybe. It was hard to tell what it was missing. You do have to pay extra for extra bbq sauce. We got the sweet bbq sauce an it was okay. I wasn't a fan of the Mac and cheese, I felt it needed some seasoning. The potato salad was good. My husband got the brisket and said it was a little chewy. He didn't like sweet tea, and said it had a weird taste. The parking lot is small. When you walk in you are greeted and can grab a menu to see what to order. They have a few times inside for sitting. I believe it is a family owned restaurant. We placed our order online. It was getting close to closing time. We were able to pay with a link so we can run in and pick up. So the food now the turkey leg was so tender and juicy. That was good. The ribs had a bite to them. Not really tender. The brisket I like my brisket sliced rather than chopped but they only serve chopped brisket. The sausage was ok. The sides beans potato salad was good but the cream corn was not it. But too we did come in close to closing time. I heard the Mac and cheese is delicious and I wish I can say it is but it was sold out. So I guess it is good. I would go back to give another try. The parking for the restaurant is across the street so be on the lookout for the sign. I walked in and was promptly greeted by the cashier. They have menu as soon as you walk in and at the register. The restaurant was a little sparse at the time but it quickly picked up service while I was there. I opted for the rib tips plate with a side of sausage. I have never been here so I was excited to try the barbecue. My sides were the mac and cheese and green beans. The green beans have bacon in them and they were seasoned well. The mac and cheese was creamy but needed a little more salt. The rib tips were meaty, tender and delicious. I also really liked their sausage link. I could get a plate of that again. I just came in for a quick lunch with my son while waiting on our truck to get washed and have to say this place is legit. We had the brisket tacos that were perfect (Flavorful, not too salty, a fresh crisp slaw, with a little bit of avocado salsa on top). The place has a very cute purple pig vibe/theme. You can choose to sit outdoors at any of the several covered picnic tables or indoors. They have a sign when you walk in instructing you to get a menu, find a seat and order at the counter when ready. We ordered 1 lb of brisket, spicy bbq sauce (the best bbq sauce I've had), sausage link, potato salad, and green beans. Note, all brisket is chopped; still very good! Their sausage was great. I was surprised at how much delicious meat came with the plate. Both sauces were delicious, I ended up using quite a bit of the hot bbq sauce because it was so good. The Mac-n-cheese and creamed corn were really good with lots of flavor. My wife got the pulled pork plate with coleslaw. The pork was just as good as the brisket and full of flavor. My wife said the coleslaw was delicious. Some other items ordered by our group were the loaded backed potato and the smoked sausage plate. The potato was huge and fully loaded with a generous serving of meat. The smoked sausage was also really good. My wife saw the deserts and ordered a slice of carrot cake and the peach cobbler. Both looked amazing. Carrot cake is one of my favorites so I was excited to try it. It was good but not the best I've had and was probably the worst thing we ordered (if there had to be a worst thing, because it was still good). It's Black Restaurant Week through this Sunday, March 3. We wanted to show our support so I looked at the list of participating restaurants. Have known about @thepurplepigbbq but hadn't visited to try it out until today for dinner. Not only is this a black-owned restaurant, but it's also a veteran-owned business. Demetric and Cherise Herron are both Army Veterans, who served our country. Made me even happier that we chose to stop by. It was also great to see that there was quite a crowd on a Friday night. The Pork Rib Tip Plate is the featured dish for the restaurant week, where $1 is donated to the Lemonade Circle. TERRIBLE FIRST IMPRESSION!! We ordered take out today and the first young lady who took our order was really nice! The second young lady who gave us our food had an awful attitude. We also asked the male owner a question about parking and he answered but was dismissive. My mom also gave him a compliment on his picture with his spouse and he didn't respond...just kept walking. They weren't busy at all as no one was there but us. What we got: A rib tip plate, a sausage link, beef ribs, a side of Mac and cheese, and a pulled pork sandwich. We were definitely disappointed with the presentation of the sausage link and amount of the ribs for the price. We poured the sauce on the ribs they were plain. The amount of food in the rib tip plate is good and my two sides were Mac and cheese and baked beans. The baked beans were good but the Mac and cheese is really nasty. The rib tips in the meal were good and we really like the sauce. The rib tips that were à la cart were tough and small. We haven't tried the pulled pork sandwich yet. I was definitely hoping for a better experience since I just moved to San Antonio and my husband is active duty so we wanted to support fellow veterans. My youngest son turned 29 last Saturday. We celebrated with a private visit with the capybaras at the Snake Farm before driving to the town of Schertz to eat lunch at the Purple Pig. Believe it or not, that was my first time to ever be in Schertz. Since moving to San Antonio 51 years ago, Schertz was just a name on highway signs when traveling on I-35. I am not exactly sure how my son heard of the Purple Pig. I do know that I am very glad he did. It is now my favorite place to eat barbecue in the San Antonio area for several reasons. The first reason is that it is just a really "cute" place. They decorated and furnished with purple touches that just make it seem bright and cheery. On top of that, it is spotless. The owners are former military. I grew up in the military and can tell you that this restaurant would pass a white glove inspection. My second reason for falling in love with this restaurant is the staff. We only actually saw three people working when we were there, but they were super nice and friendly. The woman who took our order even came to our table to ask us how our meal was. Now let's saunter over to the food. I wasn't purple, but I sure felt like a pig with my order after adhering to a severely limited low calorie diet for the last three months. I got the pork rib tip meal with sides of potato salad and macaroni and cheese. It came served in a to go box. I'm sure they knew that even a fat man like me couldn't eat that huge pile of rib tips in one setting. Believe me... I tried. They were so good. They were those little ribs with those white rubbery bones in them. The meat was juicy and sucked right off of those little bones easily. I chose the mild sauce. It was extra special! The potato salad was heavenly. I told the owner that it was just like my mother's. She told me it was her grandmother's recipe. It was rich and creamy with just a tiny hint of mustard, but not enough that you would classify it a mustard potato salad. The macaroni and cheese was also wonderful. It was super cheesy and the noodles were perfectly cooked and not soggy. My wife and youngest son both ordered the baked potato with brisket. I couldn't believe the size of the potatoes. They looked like footballs! The pile of brisket on them was insanely huge, as well. They both said they were as good as they looked. My son brought a bunch home. My wife gave up and ate the brisket and left about half of her potato. You really need to give the Purple Pig a try. It is not that far of a drive. Plus, we came home using back roads and avoided most of the I-35 mess. read more

First and foremost, they are both retired from the military and their story on how they got started was awesome. The owners parents operate a bbq restaurant in Indiana and that is where he learned how to make everything. After he retired from the military they decided to open up their restaurant. They started as a tent and saved up enough money to buy a food truck and then made enough money to buy their brick and mortar store. They bought it in 2020 during Covid and it took them 9 months to make all of the modifications to the house to turn it into a restaurant. They officially opened in 2021 during Covid and been in business at their current location since. There is a cute little playhouse in the front and the inside of the restaurant feels super cozy. The outside seating area is also very nice. We will definitely be back here and plan to bring the rest of the family.
