Greatest pub in the District. If there was a bar that was like Cheers, this is it, except not only do they know your name and are always glad you came, but the food and drink is damn good. Poutine with pork belly, a full English breakfast, charcuterie, daily specials, it's all great here. Jameson Shandy, and one of the best pours of Guinness in the entire city. Lots of great stuff on tap, like Magners, Newcastle, Belhaven, Carlsberg, and a seasonal cask ale. Are you a Liverpool supporter? A fan of the Reds? A Liverpudlian Scouse of the highest order? Say no more! This place opens early for football matches, and the Sunday roast will have you feeling full and ready for a long nap when you're done. Mixed review. This place can hit a solid triple sometimes in terms of both service and food, and then on the next visit strike out in both categories. Examples: burger, pretty good. Bangers and mash also decent and hits the spot in only a way they can. Good selection of English beer too. The bad: The fish and chips is terrible. Tons of breading to not much fish, and the fish isn't the right type to fry. Once you eat it you feel terrible. Also sometimes you'll get a nutcase as your server. We took friends once based on our first pleasant experience, and we were embarrassed by how the server acted. Great place to grab lunch on The Royal Wedding day! This lovely, "twee" spot was filled for the special event with royal-loyal patrons wearing fascinators, pearls, English costumes, and Union Jack shirts. There was a real party mood as the televisions replayed the day's festivities from England. We had a bucket of nicely seasoned chips and $5/each "food stuffs"--the chicken vindaloo and confit lamb "bubble and squeak" roulade. I love this place. I've been going there pretty much weekly since they opened. They have a pretty good beer selection and have a fun beer cocktail menu. The bartenders are all very nice and attentive. Everyone knows you and have your drink waiting for you when they see you walk in. I really, really like the food. While it's heavy, it's always very delicious and flavorful. I never had anything I didn't like. It's definitely a great place to hang out and enjoy a couple pints. read more

Great local watering hole, with hearty food and fantastic company. Stumbled in here after all the kitchens were closed on H St on a weekday night. Met Noel, the friendliest bartender who not only recommended us great food and drinks but humored us all night with his witty banter. He's one of those people with the rare ability to bring strangers together to join in the fun. Let me start with the fact that the least salty dish we ordered was the chips / fries. My vegetables were so salty they were pretty much inedible. The fish sandwich was on a bun that was soggy, either from the coleslaw they put on the sandwich or from the veggies next to it. The gnocchi was also heavily salted. The rarebit was drowning in mustard. Of the five of us, only one had an entree that wasn't awful. I was planning on rating this place a two. It had a bit of the British pub feel and they had a Welsh flag, which made our kid (briefly) happy. Our server was pleasant enough. They had Samuel Smith oatmeal stout on the menu. But as we were walking to the car my daughter shared with my husband (she tried to whisper so I couldn't hear, but didn't succeed) that she'd seen a cockroach climbing up the side of the ketchup bottle. Ugh. I had leftovers from my sandwich to feed the dogs. Now I'm not sure I want to. I did check the box, though, to make sure there weren't any hitchhikers. read more

Went on a Sunday during NFL football's day-games. Downstairs where the tables are across from the bar are WAY too dark. Tight bottleneck there also between the kitchen, bathroom and bar. Who really wants to eat at a table directly across from a bathroom? Blech. We ordered the fish and chips, the tandoori chicken dish and the steak and chips. I had the chicken, and it was awful. It was vaguely tandoori and largely unsatisfying. Bland. Chicken was alternately tough, chewy and a tad cold. Obviously not simmered well. The rice was crunchy around the edges of the bowl which suggested that it had hardened after being cooked and was then served. Again, it was vapid. I tasted the steak, and it was tough. Needed to be cut thinner and seasoned better---salt, pepper, maybe? The fish and chips looks like a catcher's mitt on the plate. Disgusting presentation. And when you touch it with your fork, it breaks apart into mushy breading and fish, not flaky at all. Too moist. The beer choices are excellent. I might go back to try the bangers and mash---never had it before and only seen the dish on TV. But this is not a place that's worth anyone's time if you're eating anything more than the chips to go with your beer. The menu was adventurous, but the presentation and food were well below par. I want to see H Street do well as I live nearby, but there are much better options either there or on Barracks Row a short drive away. read more

Easily some of the best food on H Street, which I can't believe I'm saying because it's a pub and the food isn't supposed to be good. But, it's a pub with a real chef who's managed to take classic pub fare (fish and chips, bangers and mash) and make it delicious but still accessible. It's not pretentious, it's affordable, and despite far better than average pub food, it remains a laid back bar where you're supposed to wear jeans and t-shirts, not khaki's/polos or cocktail dresses. The place is simple, clean and, much to the pleasure of my British boyfriend, decorated with British sports stuff (I would go into more detail about what that "stuff" is if I knew). I've sat upstairs both times, and that seems to be the quieter part of the bar. Downstairs seems to get a bit louder/busier, where you'd probably want to go if you were just going for drinks. Food highlights: Fish and chips, the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had in DC, and (while I'm told it's not the best) really delicious sticky toffee pudding. Gnochi with peas was also quite good. Overall: Great food, laid back and unpretentious, and one of my new favorite places for a casual dinner/drinks in DC. read more

No matter what night of the week, bumping into a friend on the way to The Queen Vic on H or finding a friend there in a patron, patroness, or bartender, server, or mix of all four works every time. We never heard a bad thing about The Vic--although several bad jokes and some ugly-named foods do surface every once in a while to challenge us. Haggis for example. [You can tell your own bad jokes.] The bartender can tame any potential disputes with an occasional shot or an adroit conversation about some pilsner from deep across what was once an iron curtain. Speaking of curtains and iron. Wow, the place is incredibly well appointed in the modern flare but does not make anyone feel less than at home. We visited friends once there, and what were they doing? Sharing spectacularly prepared foods, some healthy choices, some delicate, and some scrumptiously hearty. The place is not just for the British o files. There's something for everyone. All your friends. Going solo always works as well with a premium seat at the bar that might end up being given up for a table with friends. If you haven't gone, go. If you have, go again! The first time I ate here, about a year ago, I ordered the fish and chips. The fish was so undercooked that it was essentially clear. As someone who likes to give a place a second chance, I went back today. And yes, got the fish and chips. And they were much improved from last time around, fully cooked! However, the Sunday roast was so smothered in gravy that it was essentially inedible. There was no way to tell what you were eating because everything just tasted like gravy. So, the food here is still not great at all. However, the bartender was great. And the vibe of the place was laid back and not too crowded. I came in last Sunday for brunch. I have walked by the place many times and I decided to give it a try after reading reviews and recommendations from people. I was with a party of 4 and we were promptly seated. We got our drink orders in and then ordered our entrees about 5 minutes later. We ended up waiting 45 minutes for our meals to come out. The manager came over and apologized but at this point were all hungry and frustrated. We finally got our meals and we were all pleased. I ordered the fish and chips and I thought it was fantastic. The chips were perfectly seasoned and the fish tasted very fresh. My other friends ordered the eggs Benedict and they enjoyed it, especially the home fries. I went here for the first and was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting typical bar food, but the food was awesome. Sunday roast was absolutely incredible! This is a fantastic bar!!! We brought a big group to celebrate a birthday and the bar staff couldn't have been nicer to us. Noel the bartender was fantastic, funny and very attentive. There is a great selection of European beers that are reasonably priced and the food that we had was fantastic. Our group tried the pasties and the fish and chips. The proper cornish pasties were really good and the fish and chips were some of the best we have had in the US. I can't wait to check them out for a Sunday Roast and their full menu. We were looking for a new place for a chill evening out, and found this place on Yelp. It was great to just walk right in at 7 on a Saturday night without a reservation and be seated right away. We were up on the second floor, where we got a table right next to the window. Half the tables were empty. Loved the exposed brick walls and the comfy chairs. Very chill vibe. I could barely understand what the waiter was saying, but I did catch that they make all of their own pasta. He recommended the special fettuccine, which was awesome! It was so fresh and light. It was a small portion, but I appreciated that it was just enough to enjoy and not feel too full. Even better, it was $9 FOR AN ENTREE. My husband had the half chicken, which was also great. Before my meal at this restaurant, I had never genuinely had the food-sharing experience where everyone at the table HAD to try and try and try everyone's dishes because each and every one was excellent. After a terrible experience at Smith Commons across the street, the service, food and drinks here were so good that we all left smiling, and absolutely stuffed. Highlights from our table included Fish and Chips with a light, subtle batter and Bangers and Mash with homemade sausages and delicious caramelized onion mashed potatoes. Was in DC for the Thanksgiving holiday, and we were thrilled to find The Queen Vic! Excellent selection of British ales - including Boddington's ON TAP!! We had almost forgotten how much smoother Boddy's is on tap; what a treat!! Himself was quite pleased with that, and I indulged in a few Elderflower and gin cocktails - took me back to nights at The Angel in Essex, UK. Atmosphere is very laid back and totally friendly - we wound up chatting half the night with the table of ex-pats next to us. Our waiter was fantastic; despite him being the only server for the entire room, we never felt neglected, and he took the time to give us plenty of info about the dishes on the menu; very sociable guy!! For our meal, we shared Devils on Horseback for the starter - YUM! Himself is not crazy about figs, but could not stop eating these little delights. For mains, I went with the oyster and pork belly special, and he ordered the Full English Breakfast. My oysters were fresh, robustly seasoned, and perfect! The only complaint (of the entire night actually), was the Full English lacked black pudding - he was lucky to get much of his dinner, I kept stealing bits from his plate!! The Queen Vic also has an enclosed porch for smoking - but it is pretty posh! Big screen tv, several tables and a dart board. Nice alternative to going down to the street on a brisk night. Will recommend to any friends visiting DC, and next time we are in town, we will be back - and we will be bringing a West Ham scarf to hang from the rafters hehe!! read more

The food was on point but the service was a bit slow. Not sure if it was because it was packed due to the soccer game or if that's just the way this place operates but it took at least 30 minutes to get steak and eggs and the sausage butty. Came here for the fish & chips and we were not disappointed. We tried the bacon wrapped dates which I liked overall, but the bacon tasted a bit gamey. Twice we have eaten here while on vacation and on both occasions the food was excellent, the servers friendly and setting intimate. The fish and chips rank up there with anywhere USA, the Indian dishes (Masala and Samosas) were flavorful and spot on. The goat cheese and strawberry salad was fresh and satisfying. The menu was very broad, diverse and tempting with everything from chicken and waffles with pork belly kale; fish curry with saffron rice and pesto gnocchi and seasonal veggies.
