I waitressed my way through school so I tend to cut restaurant staff a break, especially for mistakes that are really the fault of the kitchen. I also tend to only write reviews if I have positive things to say. However, I was so disappointed in a recent visit to the Railpenny that I felt I needed to write a review. Six of us visited the Railpenny for dinner two weeks ago. I had been there before with a friend and felt comfortable recommending it to the group. I am sorry that I did. Things were fine at first. We were greeted by a pleasant hostess, seated at the time of our reservation, bar tab was transferred to the table, and the server came quickly. The problems began when our entrees arrived. The chicken and risotto ordered by a woman in our party had a long hair in it. Before our friend had a chance to say anything, a nearby server (not ours) saw it, apologized, and quickly took the plate away. The rest of us ate our food assuming our friend would receive a replacement meal soon. Thirty minutes passed. We all finished eating. One of us got up and reminded the staff that our friend had not yet gotten any food. The hostess came at that point with an appetizer of two pieces of toasted baguette, hummus, and a few carrot sticks and celery and said, she was bringing a complimentary appetizer because she "didn't want our friend to sit there with nothing to eat while the rest of us ate." That would have been quite nice had it arrived 30 minutes sooner. She asked if our friend would like another drink. As this friend only ever consumes one alcoholic beverage in an evening, she politely declined. At least a couple of us, including me, swear we heard the hostess say that our friend's meal would be complimentary. Finally, an additional 15 minutes later, another plate of the chicken and risotto came. It was cold, but our friend didn't say anything because it had been such a catastrophe and she figured it was free so why complain. When the bill came, she had been charged for it. When we questioned the server, he said he'd have to get the manager. The hostess came to the table and said it was not company policy to comp a meal. We were willing to accept that we may have miss-heard her, but we did suggest that the meal SHOULD be free given the hair and the extremely long wait. The hostess reported that she brought an appetizer (that my friend did not ask for after the rest of us were done eating our entrees and only after reminding the staff that our friend hadn't yet received any food). She also said that she offered our friend a drink (that she also did not want). Irritated by how the hostess was handling the situation, a member of our party told her "thank you" in a way that made it clear that enough was enough. The hostess shot back a remark that made it clear she thought he was very rude. So, you can see that a cascade of things put a real damper on an evening that was supposed to be a lot of fun for three couples who got a rare Saturday evening together. Oh, and another of our party ordered a second drink that never came. He got charged for it, but decided to let it go because he just wanted to get out of there. Although some of us thought our food was quite good, I will never go back to the Railpenny nor will I recommend it to others. The management has some issues to grapple with. It would have been a lot cheaper to be apologetic and offer the meal to my friend for free than losing the six of us as customers, not to mention all of the others we will tell about our experience. read more

The best tavern fries ever! We literally eat them with a fork. So good. We have had many meals there and leave happy every time. The atmosphere is great too! read more

My wife and I visited on a Saturday night. Service was extremely fast and overall everything was great. We had a moscow mule, the rum punch, and draft beers. We tried the cauliflower appetizer which was awesome and ordered bacon mac and cheese plus stuffed peppers. This restaurant is a great addition to Epping and we will definitely be coming back! read more

I went in to check out the place, sat at the bar, ordered a glass of Cab, 10$ was good but couldn't see myself drinking here with friends, too expensive. Ordered the buffalo chicken wings, excellent! yes it took 25 minutes to get it but it was delicious. Then all went wrong, i was eating my last wing and the bar maid told me and a girl beside me to move down! which there was no need to because the seat beside her remained empty! at the same time my meal arrived, pork pot pie,15$ I was a bit upset being told to move in the mid meal. The pie crust on top was good, the rest looked like canned beef soup! No thick gravy, just juice which tasted really good! I got to the carrots and peas and both were crunchy! way under cooked! ate half and took the rest home. Not worth the money, nothing special atmosphere was boring. a bunch of four seaters in a room . I started to perspire at the bar, someone asked to turn up the ac and bar maid was of no help! will go for a hamburger and fries if i go back but the price of liquor wasn't worth staying . read more

We went for dinner - very disappointed. Staff was not at all helpful, but the person doing dirty dishes was very attentive. One good person on the team did not make up for the rest of the team. The food was ok, but WAY overpriced for the quality, amount and environment. Stick with Applebees or Telly's. read more

Last Wednesday was our second visit to the Rail Penny.. we do love the renovation ! We ordered the steak Tartare..it was not very good at all ! WE ordered the Salmon and it was wonderful ! we ordered a glass of wine ,, $10.00 !!!! So, The Rail Penny is out of the question regarding a "Cheap" night out / or a varied menu ! read more

I am a local resident and I was very excited to try The Railpenny. Unfortunately I was not impressed. The service was outstanding! The waitress was training a new server, Whom they both were very sweet and did proper check ins. As for the food.. it was terrible and cold. We started with great beer options and I had the Mango Tango which was delicious! We first ordered the Fried Calamari- It was just dipped in flour and fried. Had no flavor whatsoever, and was VERY rubbery. We sent it back and of course took notice to the cook who came out and gave us a stare down by the bar. We were seated by the windows in the back. I then ordered the Roasted chicken breast. The chicken was dry, but bearable. I enjoyed the charred skin honestly. Yet the Risotto was bathing in Goat cheese killing the flavor of everything else on my plate. And the Asparagus was undercooked. I was extremely disappointed. My boyfriend ordered the RailPenny burger, had to send it back as the burger was not cooked enough. The fries were not even salted or seasoned, but we both pushed ourselves to finish. That being said for $80 on a dinner that was displayed all pretty, yet bland and undercooked, I will never go back. There was maybe 10 other customers dining on this rainy day. (Oct 27th around 3pm) There was no rush in the kitchen, so our meals could have been properly made. read more

I absolutely love everything about this new tavern in Epping. Railpenny punch, burgers and fries are absolutely phenomenal!!

Have been to the Railpenny since opening night, 2 times after that, and have had a great experience each time. We usually sit at the bar and the bartenders, Carliegh, Jason and Tuya, are the best! Friendly, professional and accommodating with a flair for great drinks. The food has been first rate since opening night and they are changing up the menu as they go, all the additions we have had are also very tasty. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough, stop in and be impressed. This is such a great improvement over the tired old restaurant they have replaced. read more

The restaurant has reasonably good tavern food with reasonable selection. Unfortunately, the wait staff still seem inexperienced, and the drink menu is limited. Food and drink took longer than optimal to arrive at the table. Worst of all is the appalling acoustics: the hard white walls increase the echo to the point where someone sitting next to you is inaudible. read more

We called before going to a movie to see if we could stop by late and they were super friendly on the telephone saying that we could come up to 10 o'clock and order a full meal without a problem. We got there and they were again friendly and seated the whole family and we had a nice dessert only. The menu seems attractive but we haven't sampled it yet. I will say that their selection of unique liquor bottles is attractive for complex cocktails and when I mentioned one that she didn't have to the owner she was extremely receptive to getting it. This rating is an average of both times we went. The first time was right after they opened and the second was about 4 months later. First time was wonderful - Saturday at 5 pm. My husband got a Tom Collins, which was made PERFECTLY (very hard to do). I got the chicken sandwich and it was very good. The second time we went was a bit of a disaster. Saturday around 7pm, packed house, and it was obvious that this restaurant still has some kinks to work out. No one came by to take our drink order for about 15 minutes after we were seated, and our appetizer never should up. You could say this may have been a bad waiter but looking around we could see other frustrated parties. The food and drinks were good but overshadowed by logistics. If you're coming here before a movie on a busy night then expect 90 minutes for drinks and entree. We will try again to see if any improvements are made. read more

A bit above average, but could be great. Second time there with some friends. Food is generally very good, I had the fish & chips. The fish is fresh and delicious, the fries were underwhelming skinny fries a bit overdone. The portion of fish was small as well. We all couldn't understand why they give you popcorn instead of bread. Bread is fairly inexpensive, and if oven fresh would be a terrific upgrade. The noise is so bad it is was almost impossible to converse with people at our table. The carafe of water is a nice touch, but no ice? It wouldn't take much to make this place great. I understand that it's new and these small issues can be ironed out. However, if it continues they will lose many people, which would be a shame. We need more quality restaurant destinations in the Epping area. I hope they see this and consider the customers input. I do wish them the best! read more

Was in town for the races and went here with my sister. Great service and friendly staff. Our bartender, Twyla, was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. Definitely stop back next time in area. read more

Last night was the First and LAST time me and my 2 friends will ever go to the Railpenny tavern. It's truly a shame because the tavern is adorable and we were expecting so much more out of it. Our food took what seemed like forever to come out. Mind you, there were only 4 or 5 other tables of customers at the time so it's not like they were slammed. When the food did come it was not good. The burger was decent but way undercooked. The falafel PITA was not on a pita it was on a dry cracked white wrap and the falafel itself was like soggy dog food. We would have liked to return our meals but the waitress NEVER CAME TO CHECK ON US untill she came to give us the check and clear the plates! When she did come, we told her how we felt and she took the food away, never asking if we wanted anything else and did not apologize. The meal was taken off the bill but The bill was still $125. For that price I have much higher expectations. If I were the owner of this potential gold mine i would be ashamed and embarrassed. We will not recommend this place to anyone! read more
