Wife had the lamb chops hat she felt were over salted. While I had the rib eye steak which was a little over cooked. But due to the thickness (thinner than I like) it was okay. Also have never been a fan of putting a sauce on a good steak. My salad was delicious, and my wife's tomato bisque soup was good. I am not use to eating very heavy food so I had a little indigestion. I would recommend to eat very early and go for a walk to burn some the heavy sauce and butter that they add to the food. Left a review here 8 years ago when it was my favorite spot anywhere! Unfortunately I haven't been back in the last two years due to the poor service I experienced. Which is a shame because I've dined here maybe 50+ times over the years. I've been going here since it opened and had a relationship with the staff and owners, and just loved supporting local businesses. And seeing Memo, etc. (my fav server) My last experience, I met my family here who arrived just a few moments before me. When I sat down they were just starting to order and the server (a new black haired lady I hadn't seen here before) asked me what I wanted; I asked her for a moment to take a look and if I could see the specials for tonight. She told me I had to hurry, didn't have time to tell me the specials, and I should order now, because there would be other guests who needed our table after us. Though this is a no reservation location. We were here to celebrate our anniversary. I said, "well if I can't even look at the menu, and their isn't time to hear the specials, I guess I don't have time to eat?" The server replied with "oh great, that's even better!" And walked away. Such a strange departure from the quality this place had held for such a long period of time. Unfortunately I have not been back. I would rather spend my money out at a place that I would have a better experience. I guess things could be better or worse over the past couple years, I don't know; so maybe try it for yourself and see if you have a better experience. I ordered the 14 oz ribeye. Worst steak of my life. No meat. 100% fat. I know what a ribeye is supposed be and there was no eye and no spinalis. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING! Be prepared and bring only cash, since this establishment does not take card. An absolute hidden gem in this small town. The Pork Rillette was so smooth and spreadable like butter, but the crostini was a tad too crunchy. It was their special, so don't be surprised if it's not on the menu. Rigatoni Bolognese was creamy and the flavors just carry so well. If you take it home the flavors are more enhanced and taste even better overnight! Coffee Crusted Ribeye was a perfect medium rare and if you're not a coffee lover, don't worry you can't taste it, but it enhances the ribeye. THE ELK IS DIVINE. So soft and not gamey at all! The cranberry sauce is the perfect amount of subtle sweet. Both the ribeye and elk came with garlic mash which was so soft and creamy. Do be aware that the plates are HOT, cause this idiot wanted to turn the plate for a photo and burned my fingertip, but it's okay it was worth it. read more

The Range is a wonderful surprise. Just had our third dinner there in the past 2 years and it continues to blow us away. Most recent family dinner on a rainy Wednesday night the table ALL enjoyed their dinners. I had split the Rib Eye with my wife, it was tender, full of flavor and impeccably seasoned. SO GOOD! And the veggies and mashed potatoes were spot on. One of my sons had the Pork loin chop special...incredible! Other son the Elk tenderloin...first time eating Elk amazing, with a dark cherry glaze WOW...and daughter in law had shrimp scampi that was as good as any she's ever had. The meat comes locally, the veggies too...OH AND THE Lavender Honey Creme Brulee...OMG... You can't go wrong dining at The Range...a bit loud inside (it was rainy) better outside, ambience is ok, but solid service and the food and overall experience was 5 star...remember, cash only! Came here 10/24/2020 (Saturday night) during COVID and honestly, it just wasn't a pleasant experience. I feel bad leaving a poor review during these times when so many places are struggling, but the #1 thing I think about when going out right now is safety, and I did not feel safe here. Our dinner started out on an awkward note. We came from the Bay Area and called a couple weeks ahead to make a reservation as we'd heard great things about the food. At no point were we told that the restaurant is cash or check only - very much an anomaly, and something you should warn people about! It wasn't until we sat down, and flipped the menu over that we saw (at the very very bottom) what we were in for. The waitress tried to helpfully assure us that it was ok if we didn't have cash, because they take check (gee, thanks? who on earth still carries checks or cash for that matter - especially in a pandemic!) So I had the pleasure of running across the street and pulling cash from an ATM (yay fees). We ordered tea and an appetizer while deciding on our mains, and definitely kept an eye on prices since, well, the ATM had a $100 max withdrawal, so we were on a budget. Word of advice to a restaurant - it's really unhelpful to your bottom line to have customers trying to stick to a $100 budget, since that basically rules out any alcohol - your highest margin items. In any case, we ordered the elk and brisket as out mains and enjoyed our water, while people watching. It was during this time that we noticed numerous people approaching the hostess stand and hanging out without a mask, as well as people walking around the restaurant to adjacent tables (assuming this was friends running into each other and saying hi), or people walking to the restroom, all without masks. I'm sorry, but we're in a pandemic and the laws allowing restaurant operations require that everyone wear masks when they are not eating and/or not at their tables. And while it puts servers in an uncomfortable position, it is their job to help enforce these rules for their own safety and the safety of their patrons (and their families who may be at risk). So seeing people not wearing masks, and nothing being done about it, was really uncomfortable! After about 10 minutes, our mains came out (gotta wonder about how fresh it was, given it came out so very quickly). Apparently our server completely forgot our starter, which she then comped (thank you!). The mains were good and hearty portions. The elk was good (though I wouldn't say it was medium rare, which is how I had ordered it), but I did love having mashed potatoes topped with shoestring fries, for the fun crunchiness and, well, who doesn't love every type of potato? We settled our check, which was $76 + 14 tip = $90, so we made it under our cap! However, we definitely would have ordered wine and dessert if 1) this place wasn't cash only and we weren't forced to be on a budget and 2) we were willing to stay any longer. However, seeing unmasked people wandering about was really uncomfortable and all I wanted to do was leave as soon as we were done eating. Though, even that was an annoying experience as there was a party of 6 people standing by the hostess stand as we were trying to leave, none of whom were wearing a mask. The long and short of it is this: the food was perfectly ok (nothing to really write home about), however, the lack of care about public safety left a terrible taste in my mouth, and this lack of care is something I'll remember when the pandemic is over, and I won't dine here again. And a word of advice for the restaurant: either start taking credit cards or tell every single person who makes a reservation (and also call them ahead of time and remind them) that you only take cash. read more

I was pleasantly surprised. No credit card or marketing sounds cool but you're kind of just walking into some steak joint with a load of cash in your pockets and plenty of questions. The service was great. Our server was friendly and helpful. The steak was probably one of the best I've ever had in a restaurant and that's say something bc I've been to a number of famous steak houses. The prices weren't outrageous by any means and fair for what we got. I'd highly recommend it and do plan to return again one day. It's not in our weekly date night budget :-) read more

We came to the Range last night and after several attempts in the past to get into this establishment we finally made it in thanks to the wonderful hostess that said they would squeeze us in. The atmosphere was nice and welcoming. The hostess was pleasant. The server was a delight and very helpful in helping us make our dinner choice. The food was very tasty, with a lot of flavor. The menu was broad with a great selection. We had the fried chicken that was highly recommended. It was fabulous. I had the salad that I throughly enjoyed along with the in house homemade bread. We were asked if we wanted to par take in the homemade dessert. While they did sound yummy, I'm reserving it for my next visit, which will be soon. I highly recommend this place. 5 stars - hands down! Tucked away in tiny Santa Margarita lies The Range, a small town restaurant with a homey Southern feel. You'll meet the whole Jackson family when you dine there. Owner Jeff hides away in the back, busy in the kitchen with his son Shane. Wife Lindsay and daughter Jade can be found serving up delicious meals with smiles on their faces (and in some cases, a hug to go!). Server Demetrius is also amazing! He can be found in his signature cowboy hat. To add to the old school, homey feel - this restaurant is cash only. But no worries, if you forgot your bills, just walk across the street and use the ATM at the liquor store for $2.75. While this restaurant is kid friendly, it has a nicer feel that doesn't necessarily scream bring your kids, but rather leave them at home for a nice evening out. Let's talk about the food - nothing short of amazing! I had forgotten that food can have such flavor! (I know that sounds ridiculous, but I'm being honest). The butternut squash ravioli was absolutely perfect, I wouldn't change anything about it. Because it's a seasonal dish, in the summertime they substitute mushroom for the butternut squash. We visited the range while staying at the Santa Margarita KOA. Unfortunately we weren't able to dine in and had to do the to go orders. We had a chicken sandwich and fried chicken plate. Both of the plates had great flavor but we're a little soggy by the time we got back to our camp (not their fault). We also had a churro for dessert, that was great!
