The restaurant has a huge outdoor dining and many tables for intimacy inside. The service was perfect, filling drinks and on top of everything. We ordered apps, entrees and desserts. Everything was great! Literally, great. FRENCH food! The sauces were highly developed, with huge depth of flavor. Everything was perfectly seasoned and was herb forward! Dragons Breath was GREAT!!!! My second visit and only because the party I was driving the past couple days wanted to have dinner at the Range. Giddy Up! I've been wanting to get back there again for dinner...Cash or Check NO credit cards but since I knew that I figured $80 bucks would cover my dinner and the tip, and it did. I was Sat immediately, we were earlyish and I took a deuce along the wall. I ordered soda water and with that a nice selection of fresh bread was brought to my table, with a pound of whipped butter...yummy. After musing the menu, two starters and a salad, caesar and the special, an expensive protein....I ordered a caesar salad and the pasta with a grass fed high end ground beef meatball with a lite marinara sauce. The caesar had two filets of white anchovy. The salad was basically a third of a trimmed Romaine stalk with caesar dressing and shaved parmesan with the anchovy. It was my job to cut the lettuce into bite size pieces and blend in the dressing, based on the price I thought the work was done. Then the hyped pasta special arrived, the meatball was nearly the size of a tennis ball. Wow, Okay, Rigatoni graced the edges. I had to cut the meatball into bite size pieces...what's with this having to cut everything meal tonight...I was not impressed! Well the prized beef ball was tasteless, in fact it was a tho a kid made a large hamburger ball and baked it for an hour in the oven Tough, not juicy, no flavor, note to self - no more specials at the range. Dessert was the highlight of the meal. Delicious it was a Fresh berries cobbler without the cobble, friggin delicious....and that's how I left the range tonight. I made reservations and we sat outside. It was a nice evening. Our server, I don't believe gave us her name and since we paid cash, not on a bill. Everyone was nice and friendly, water glass was kept filled. They bring you bread and butter and I was very hungry. I had a glass of Pinot Noir and my husband had a Modelo. I got the filet mignon medium rare, potatoes and some veggies. My husband got the brisket, veggies and he asked for mashed sweet potatoes. We shared a sorbet for desert. The ambiance, service and food was outstanding! Our waitress was able to answer every question we had about the food, how it was prepared, and even where it was from. She was amazing!! Not to mention the food was exceptional. She sold everyone at the table (except me, because I don't eat gamey food) on the ELK! And it literally melted in your mouth! This is easily one of the best restaurants in slo county in terms of quality and taste of the food as well as overall dining experience! I paid for my meal with a check as they do not take cards (cash and check only) and the vibe is country western but you can go casual or dress up. What a blessed first time dining experience we had here! This place was highly recommended by several wine educators at different wineries, so it was a no brainer that we had to check it out while we were back in town! Located in downtown Santa Margarita, this quaint country resto is just off State Route 58. There are only 5 parking stalls in front, so if you make a reservation right when they open (and arrive a few minutes before), you should be able to snag a stall no problem. We were welcomed and seated outside on their cozy patio on a beautiful Thursday evening (seating inside as well). Love their rustic country decor and seeing the surrounding lush grapevines, very photo worthy! Kudos to the staff for being so awesome and attentive. We were told about the specials, which all sounded tempting, but we came to try what was highly recommended from their "Main Event". I'll get back to that in a bit, but first... Before we placed our order, their bread service came out hot, fresh, and fast (love it!). Aside from their wonderful selection of delicious breads (that cornbread...yum!), we also tried their Stinking Rose Pizzette (must try if you're a garlic lover, so good!!!). Since we just came from a wine tasting, we opted for Sweet Tea, which was perfectly sweet and refreshing! Okay back to the "Main Event", which for me was their Elk Medallions (medium rare). Absolutely phenomenal! It was my very first time trying elk before, and it far exceeded my expectations. It was perfectly prepared, lean yet melt-in-your-mouth-tender, and not gamey whatsoever! The restaurant is nestled in the small town strip of Santa Margarita, parking is limited in front of the restaurant BUT there's plenty of street parking and a small public parking lot less than a block away. The staff is very kind, patient and fun to talk to. We never had empty water glasses, and had fun talking & vibing with our waitresses. OKAY THE FOOD: * the filet mignon- okay don't judge me, but our entire table had gotten the same entree because of how yummy/ highly recommended it was. The Range is the best in the area, and one of the best in the greater Paso area. I loved it. Allow me to elaborate. Doesn't look like much from curbside with a reminder of a car repair shop, or at best, a little rundown restaurant. But omg, so cute inside. Intimate, small covered patio and 2 small rooms inside, rustic, and a larger door patio with string lights and lovely trees. The menu has a small and mighty menu, filled with meats, pastas, fish, chicken, salads, etc -- something for everyone, and tempting beyond. I had the brisket, wow. Smoked for 14 hours, garlic mashed, veg. It was lean, sliced thin, super tender and didn't need to knife. Incredible, and quite possibly the best I've ever had. My guest had the devils cheese brulle appetizer with was tasty and loaded with garlic and she went with elk - tender and tasty. So good. I have heard of this restaurant for a very long time and finally got to visit last night. My friend had the filet mignon and I had the ribeye. Both cooked to perfection. We split the man salad and it was perfect. We also split the chocolate pie. OMG it was like my grandmother's recipe with cocoa. Award winning. Once again - great meal, great food, great service. We are never disappointed with The Range. The "Original Man" salad is a wedge served with a gigantic steak knife. Our outside seating was in a beautiful setting with fun lights and heaters if needed. All of that was great. Here is a small list of gripes, but the rest of the stuff far outweighed it. 1. CASH ONLY. What are you a strip club? Get with the times. 2. One bathroom for everyone. Boys, girls, theys, thems, whatever. One bathroom. Not cool. 3. Took forever to get our food. But they provided plenty of bread and butter. Still. I showed up hungry and planned ahead to get my ribeye. Reservations at 5:30, ate at 7:15 aprox. Thats about all i can say. this evening, I took my fiancé to the range for a romantic dinner. We were staying in Pismo Beach and we drove three cities away to the range. A friend of mine recommended the restaurant and said it was amazing.. The food presentation looked very nice. I ordered the elk and it was chewy like leather and overcooked . I asked if I could order something else and she said yes. I got the lamb, medium rare.. The Lamb had no char on the outside. The inside was well done and there was so much salt. It made me choke. I sent it back as well.. the waitress seemed offended and was rude to me over this. She asked me how the food was. I was honest... sorry it sucked. When we were outside, the chef came out and seemed intoxicated . She was mad, dogging me, and then she told me. " F you you effing Ahole don't ever come back here. You caused me to get fired tonight.. as we were about to get in our car. She continued to talk trash to us.. rather than leaving a bad review online I called the restaurant later just to give them a heads up about what happened and they could've cared less. Overall this was a bad experience. i would never go back to the Range. They were rude and unprofessional. I love the part where they followed me to my car to harrass me. read more

The food was excellent; very straightforward. We had the French onion soup and it was consistently good as the last time we had it in May. I tried the meatball with bucatini and marinara, fresh tomatoes and shaved Parmesan. It was tasty no frills filling. We also had the special of the night gulf shrimp with au gratin potatoes and a string potatoes (fried) on top. Also, had the mussels with a beurre blanc sauce and parsley. Very straight forward and maybe a touch salty for my taste. The service was excellent; very attentive. Always checking if we were okay. The restaurant has a very small parking lot 5 cars. So you have to find parking on the street. Ambiance is cozy (we always sit inside because of the heat); with old album covers of country singers from the past decorating the walls. If you have boisterous patrons it will get pretty loud even with a normal decibel you can hear the next tables conversation. It was not an issue for my party; it's just the way it is. I had such high expectations for The Range, as their ratings are excellent, and it was recommended by a local. Unfortunately, my experience wasn't great, and we won't be back. It did have great decor, ambiance, and friendly staff. The garden salad was great as well. However, I ordered the $55 ribeye, and the couple of bites I had were full of gristle. I told the waitress, who took it back to the kitchen to get me another. What happened next was the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. A waitress came back and said that the chef suggested I get the filet instead because a ribeye is going to have lots of marbling, and if he made another, he was afraid I wouldn't like that either. I said that ribeye is what I always eat. I am well aware that it has marbling, which is why I love it. I have never had that much gristle in a ribeye. She went back in the kitchen, and another server came to the table and said that the chef had cut all the ribeyes today from the same cut of beef, and another steak would likely be the same. Again she asked if I would prefer a filet since it wouldn't have the marbling. So, after four times of having someone come to the table, I said fine to the filet, which I absolutely didn't want. I was incredibly embarrassed at having so many visits to our table about my meal, that I honestly just wanted to leave. Our entire party was done with their meals by the time I got mine. The filet, while cooked perfectly, was tasteless. I took a couple bites and got a to-go box. For $55, I expected an amazing meal. Super disappointed. read more

As we were guided to our table I noticed really cool patio decor. I didn't snap any photos because there were too many guest dining in that direction, it has a rustic charm. The hostess told us we could try some of the delicious grapes hanging around the back fence though we just admired the view from our table they are stunning! So to start off we're brought waters and complimentary bread the real killer here is the corn bread more like a sweet corn cake delicious and just like this mom makes it ;)with lots of honey! When it came to ordering I had a tough decision to make was it going to be the 14oz coffee crusted Ribeye that I was salivating over? Or the wild gulf prawns our server tantalized me with while describing the specials? I decided to go with Mary's free range Chicken breast potato gratin, fresh vegetables , and lemon pan jus, I don't know who Mary is but thank you! I loved everything about this dish! But after being on a low carb diet for some time now the potatoes were killer!! Stunning dish the chicken was juicy, tender and flavorful, lie it had been roasting away all day and the lemon pan jus was the perfect compliment. 10/10 would recommend!!!! My husband really enjoyed his barbecue brisket I'm surprised he didn't order the lamb or ribeye. Honestly they have so many great options also with a vegetarian were told the owners daughters are vegan/ vegetarian as well and not to be afraid to ask for those options next time they could make a vegetable pasta or a delicious salad simply don't be afraid to say you're a vegetarian at a steakhouse ;) We topped the night off with dessert mango sorbet for the little one and hubs and I split the lemon pound cake with vanilla ice cream and raspberry coulis.
