What a blessed first time dining experience we had here! This place was highly recommended by several wine educators at different wineries, so it was a no brainer that we had to check it out while we were back in town! Located in downtown Santa Margarita, this quaint country resto is just off State Route 58. There are only 5 parking stalls in front, so if you make a reservation right when they open (and arrive a few minutes before), you should be able to snag a stall no problem. We were welcomed and seated outside on their cozy patio on a beautiful Thursday evening (seating inside as well). Love their rustic country decor and seeing the surrounding lush grapevines, very photo worthy! Kudos to the staff for being so awesome and attentive. We were told about the specials, which all sounded tempting, but we came to try what was highly recommended from their "Main Event". I'll get back to that in a bit, but first... Before we placed our order, their bread service came out hot, fresh, and fast (love it!). Aside from their wonderful selection of delicious breads (that cornbread...yum!), we also tried their Stinking Rose Pizzette (must try if you're a garlic lover, so good!!!). Since we just came from a wine tasting, we opted for Sweet Tea, which was perfectly sweet and refreshing! Okay back to the "Main Event", which for me was their Elk Medallions (medium rare). Absolutely phenomenal! It was my very first time trying elk before, and it far exceeded my expectations. It was perfectly prepared, lean yet melt-in-your-mouth-tender, and not gamey whatsoever! Wow, just wow! My husband ordered their Ribeye (medium rare), which he also enjoyed wholeheartedly. Our bellies were so happy and full, but like I always say, "there's always room for dessert!". Two words, Hillbilly Heaven...'nuff said! LOL. Note: Cash or check only (us old school kids appreciate this! LOL!). CHEERS and happy eating till next time...

*visited on a Friday night with a group of 4, with a dinner reservation Came here for a double date with some great friends as they had highly recommended the Range. The restaurant is nestled in the small town strip of Santa Margarita, parking is limited in front of the restaurant BUT there's plenty of street parking and a small public parking lot less than a block away. The staff is very kind, patient and fun to talk to. We never had empty water glasses, and had fun talking & vibing with our waitresses. OKAY THE FOOD: * the filet mignon- okay don't judge me, but our entire table had gotten the same entree because of how yummy/ highly recommended it was. I loved it, the dish was yummy and had different textured & flavors. The filet was perfectly made- I had ordered medium and it was SO tender. I highly recommend it if you're wondering. * pulled pork pizzette - loaded and yummy. It was the perfect appetizer for the table, and though different, pretty delicious.

Pleasantly surprised to find this while glamping in the area! This amazing steak house is nestled in santa margarita and is really top notch and better than larger more expensive steak places I've been to. The service was great. All the food was great...from the bread to the soup, salad and of course the filet and the desert too! It's cash only. We went on a week night so not sure if you need reservations on weekends. Highly recommend!

Everything was wonderful, service, food and ambiance. This was our third time at The Range and it's definitely one of our favorite places

So good. I have heard of this restaurant for a very long time and finally got to visit last night. My friend had the filet mignon and I had the ribeye. Both cooked to perfection. We split the man salad and it was perfect. We also split the chocolate pie. OMG it was like my grandmother's recipe with cocoa. Award winning. I asked our waitress to pick her favorite wine and she did an amazing job. All was to perfection and can't wait to return.

The service and the food are phenomenal. The Elk Medallions, Fried Chicken and Man Salad are a MUST!!!

The Luck of it never ceases to amaze me...I'm driving a B Day party today and the last stop is dinner at "the Range". Sounds like an ideal opportunity to have some dinner for myself. I was seated on the patio with all the early dinner folks. I couldn't dine at the bar tonight because there is no bar, looks like it was at some point but not these days. Apparently the only spirits in town are at the Liquor store, just beer and wine here folks. I got duce to myself, and prompt attention from Jessica. water, iced tea and a nice little plate of sourdough bread slices accompanied with a unique corn bread. Jessica rattled off the specials, shes had some practice having worked here the last nineteen years. The specials...a beef meatball on linguini, a pork ragu something and sand dabs da de da...I started with a Caesar salad romaine hearts no croutons thanks. I had to try the Elk medallions Oh my....delicious, accompanied with smashers and the best combination of fresh vegetables I think I ever had and cooked to perfection and all of it served on a warmed plate. Oh yea... You know when the dinner steak knife comes out and is from Rambo's house it gonna be something to look forward to enjoying. Nuff said, make the trip out here. Dessert backed up dinner a rubarb crumb topped warm compote and vanilla ice cream to help it slid down. Even the iced tea was good, probably because it was brewed fresh & strong today. Ah the bill has arrived with a fortune cookie. do I flip the bill or open the fortune cookie first? fortune cookie first, maybe it says I got a free meal? "Sail into the land of opportunity-treasures await" hum...not free but certainly a good fortune told. CASH or check No Credit Cards. Tip well my friends the range is Highly recommended by the foodguy. Martin

I had no idea this steakhouse existed in Santa Margarita. Started with the French onion soup. It was really good! I had an amazing filet steak that was cooked perfectly. Served with mashed potatoes and veggies. The only negatives are they only take cash and they only had one champagne choice on the menu. Next time I'll bring my own bottle and pay the corkage fee.

A friendly greeting upon arrival. We had made a reservation for our party of five for a Tuesday night dinner of friends. It was a warm evening and the patio doors were open. At about 80 degrees outside, the interior was a little warm; we should have moved to the cute side patio. The menu is Latin fusion, described to us by our server as dishes from across Mexico, South America, and other parts of Central America. The menu has many choices from appetizers, chicken, pork, seafood, and vegetarian + vegan sections. There's also a full page of cocktails ($11), $6 beer (bottled), and wine. The Black Cadillac Margarita stood out for its black color (from powdered charcoal, which gave it an earthy, smoky note) and silver tequila. The other margaritas were reposado tequila based and flavored with the accordant flavored syrup. The Cure cocktail was also a standout, with house-infused watermelon tequila ($11). Wines by the glass or bottle (glasses were $12 for whites or rose, $11 for reds). Entrees came with a small, very fresh side salad or soup (last night's soup was a creamy corn and jalapeño, which was exquisite). Many of the menu items are titled with a type of liquor (for example, Jim Beam Enchiladas, Single Malt Seafood Tacos), which is a thematic choice and does not indicate inclusion of said liquor in the recipe. Everyone was happy with their entrees, which had an appetizing presentation and generous portion. Our server let us know that everything on menu was gluten free except for the flour tortillas (but there were gluten-free corn tortillas as well). I was very happy with my "Dom Perignon Chile Relleno" - a large poblano chile stuffed with shrimp and corn kernels in a cheesy sauce), battered in cornmeal and deep fried, with chopped fresh veggies, crumbled queso fresco, and a chipotle sauce (I asked for that on the side; it was delicious), $24.95. It comes on a bed of white rice or papas chorizo (roasted, mashed potato with chorizo crumbles - yay for that!). The Asombroso Sopas were also a hit (ordered with carne asada, you also had the choice of chicken or al pastor, $22.95). The vegan potato tacos (3 tacos, $18.95) were tossed in a cilantro sauce. The El Charro pork enchiladas came with beans and white rice and were a generous portion ($19.95). The service was 5/5 attentive, competent, and friendly. We lingered after paying the bill as no one was waiting for a table and our server continued to check on us and welcomed the lingering - true Latin style! I plan to return to try the sopas and take The Cure watermelon-infused tequila cocktail with Tajin rim) before the summer is through!

We were seated at the bar, and maybe that was part of the issue. It was quite busy, with both indoor and outdoor seating filled. The wine itself was just mid. Our server didn't seem knowledgeable about what she was pouring, and when it comes to wine tasting, that makes a huge difference. A big part of the experience is learning about the wines. You're there for the story, the vineyard, the tasting notes and none of that really came through. My boyfriend is a bit of a wine snob (in the best way), and usually, if he enjoys the experience, he buys enough bottles to waive both of our tasting fees. This time, though, nothing really stood out or felt worth it. I'm sorry, but there's so much more that goes into serving wine than just pouring it. You have to sell the wine and make people fall in love with it. Unfortunately, that spark was missing here. This is a one and done experience for us.

Despite coming in late, the staff was welcoming and attentive. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the sausage and broccolini gemelli was well executed. My only criticism is the use of burrata on the dish. Because it was placed directly on top of the hot pasta, it essentially cooked the burrata, which kind of misses the point of serving burrata in the first place. Rather than adding richness or contrast, it muted the flavors of the sausage and broccolini and made the dish taste a bit bland. I think a stronger cheese that holds up better to heat, such as Pecorino Romano, would have complemented the pasta much better. That said, the service was excellent and the pasta itself was cooked perfectly. Overall, a very good experience and I'd happily return.
