If I were to review this place by atmosphere alone, I would give it 4 stars. Wonderful, lively, fun place with loud music and nice decor. The seating is comfortable and the servers are nice and smiling a lot. The downfall to their service, however, was that they were quite slow and didn't come to see how the food was tasting which brings me to my next point... The food. The menu has a vegan section which had me SUPER excited. The server was honest that their chicken and waffles are not perfected yet and I really appreciated that. So she suggested the impossible patty melt. I could tell that it would be a really good sandwich if they bread weren't SO ROCK HARD! It was seriously so hard I thought it was going to cut my mouth. I couldn't say anything because she never came to ask. So I just removed most of the bread. My husband's meal was good, but not good enough to come again he says. He got the pork chops and the Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was actually not good at all. Very lacking in flavor. I do not recommend it at all. But the pork chops were good enough that if you choose to go here, it's worth trying. One thing that I really do have to give them props for is their onion rings. When I'm craving a "crappy, basic burger that isn't really crappy or basic" I go to The Rarebit. The Track Burger isn't fancy or huge, but it sure is tasty. Sometimes you just want a no frills burger that is simply delicious. I love getting a side of mac and cheese instead of the fries. The fries are on the skinnier side. Personally I prefer a little fatter or skinny sticks of crispy goodness... everyone has their faves. Their cocktail game is pretty good too. I can't remember what it was called but I do remember it being good. My guy loves the Moscow Mules here and they are his favorite in all of Charleston. He will get a Moscow Mule anywhere else and say "it's good, but it's not quite The Rarebit". They can get quite crowded depending on when you go. We've always lucked out getting a spot at the bar or a table. If you go during happy hour from 4-7pm, the Moscow Mules are $6. That's a deal for a mug of deliciousness. read more

From the minute we walked in, it was exactly what we needed after a long trip - warm greetings from the staff, great atmosphere, and excellent Bloody Marys. I had my first ever shrimp and grits, which were outstanding!! My spouse enjoyed perfectly cooked steak and eggs and, I quote, the "best ever" mac and cheese. Our server, Kimberly, was a "12" out of "10" - genuinely friendly, very helpful and one of those people you are happy to have met along the way. Delicious food with great service. From the hostess, to the server, to the bartender everyone was so nice and accomodating. They dont take reservations so we put our name down and waited an hour for our table (during which time we just bar hopped in the area). Went here for breakfast AND dinner Wednesday 4/7/21. My wife and I both had the omelette with toast for breakfast and it was excellent! It was stuffed with bacon, onions, tomato and spinach. The best breakfast I've had all week in Charleston and at a very reasonable price. We enjoyed it so much that we went back for dinner. For dinner my wife had the crispy chicken sandwich which she said was one of the best she's ever had and I had the ribeye steak. My dinner was great and also the best I've had all week. Too bad we found this place the day before we go back home. The only reason it got 4 stars instead of 5 is because they don't have any low calorie sweetener for coffee, no biscuits and no grits except for the weekend. Whenever we're spending the day hanging out downtown, we always take a pit stop at The Rarebit. They make their ginger beer in house and it is absolutely delicious, I highly recommend trying the Moscow Mule, which of course includes the ginger beer. My favorite menu item so far is the grilled cheese and tomato soup! I could never find a place that actually has the tomato soup part to the nostalgic grilled cheese. One of our regular go to place, and the perfect place to stop while you're running around downtown Charleston for a snack and a cool down drink. I would give it 5 starts but I think the bar staff could improve. Last visit the entire time we sat, the bartender complained to another person working about a colleague, wasn't appropriate to do in front of customers. Shout out to the cook that heard her (Although about 45 minutes later - as we were leaving), pulled her aside and told her it's not the right place or time for these conversations. Sat down at the bar with one other customer and a couple tables. Took about five minutes to get just a glass of water and the bartender immediately walked away. I waited a few more minutes, the bartender took the table that walked in after me's food order and I assumed she would come to me after but instead went to the end of the bar to talk to the patron sitting there who seemed to have been a rep or someone who works within the company. We happened upon this place early NYE2022 and found a great seat at the window for people watching. They do not take reservations so think ahead on seating times. The food was good and the service was excellent. The servers really seemed proud to work there and is showed in the service. I got the Cobb salad with shrimp which was good but I really enjoyed the fried okra. Prices was very reasonable for the quantity and quality of the food. Rarebit is maintaining its 5 star status from me. Each visit opens the door to a new discovery which keeps me coming back again and again. As everyone else has mentioned, the Moscow Mule is among the best. Part of me wonders if anything on ice in one of those copper mugs would be just as delicious based solely on how cold and refreshing it is. Either way, they're amazing... go get one. I recently came in for brunch and was equally amazed with the food as I have been with the cocktails over my past visits. I often times find myself disappointed with breakfast options that sound delicious but end up falling short. According to other yelpers and our waitress, the Huevos Rancheros wouldn't disappoint. They were both right. The presentation was spot on and a unique way to serve up the dish. The corn tortilla stay crispy throughout and the mix of eggs, black beans, sour cream, and avocado were perfect. Don't make the mistake of skipping the pulled pork add on to the dish. The flavor of the pork mixed in is what truly made this dish shine. As a general rule of thumb, I would say that anything smothered in this delicious pork is going to be a winning dish. For me the Rarebit is all about their signature drinks. On that count, a fat affirmative Five Stars. Their Moscow Mule hands down takes it as the star of their lineup, not only one of the best cocktails I've ever had but by far the best Moscow Mule. Done with vodka, limeade and a special in house created ginger beer termed "Sweatman's," then served in a special iced copper mug, it's a total show stopper, delicious, fragrantly refreshing, unlike any you've ever tasted before. However, that is not to discount their other drink offerings like their mint julep, their "Dark & Stormy" rum, ginger, limeade mixture or their Sazerac which with its absinthe rinse is a one up on that traditional drink of New Orleans and indeed does change an old saying around to better read ""Absinthe' makes the heart grow fonder." Better yet, the bartenders who perform these near miracle concoctions are the top notch professionals of their trade, friendly people to really know how to make a drink, tend a bar, and do it well. As for food, they have an excellent Po' Boy with your choice of shrimp or catfish but with an exquisite house made remoulade. Also a great buttermilk batter skillet fried country steak with pepper gravy. As I found their food to be really good but menu abbreviated I can go a solid Four Stars on that but as their drinks are more deserving of a Six Star award, I'm going to give them my full Five Stars. read more

I've been in CHS for almost 4 years now- and it took me 3.5 years too long to find The Rarebit. After having some Friday evening drinks, my husband and I were looking for a place for food and came across this. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with a side salad and he got a breakfast platter and we got a side of fries to share. Everything was very good, with shout outs to the grits- which were creamy, simple, and so tasty- and French fries- hand cut, perfectly fried and salted. Side salad was large with mixed greens and fresh ingredients. After all was said and done, the meal was less than $35, a truly "rare" thing in downtown Charleston. I went here last night for dinner. Every time we come to Charleston we have this on our list of places to try out and this year we finally went. My party of 3 was seated right away. Our server came over and when we asked her about the beers on tap, we couldn't even understand her. We asked her again to repeat the beers/explain then since we clearly didn't know what they were but we were left very confused when she walked away. My friend asked for the Victory on tap and the waitress eventually brought out the beer and it was some Belgian beer in a can. Definitely not what she ordered. I tried for the second time to get the Victory on tap and this time was successful. It was really good. I wasn't super impressed with the menu. I mean there is a variety but how do sandwiches not come with sides? Then I was confused with the breakfast still on the menu. I ended up ordering the vegan burger, one friend for the Po Boy with a side of fried green tomatoes and the other got the beet salad. My friend loved the beet salad and it was fresh and there wasn't too much dressing. The Po Boy was good according to my friend but it was on the small side and the roll could have been bigger. The vegan burger definitely wasn't a burger and more like meatballs. It was flavorful but not what I was expecting. I thought the bib lettuce should have been wrapped around it and the burger should have been shaped like a burger. Overall it was a good meal. The waitress caused some frustration and she look forever with our check. Not sure I'd go back again considering all the other options in Charleston. read more

Thank you yelp for helping me find this rare gem while taking a short trip to Charleston. We came for Sunday brunch and it wasn't too busy so we where able to sit quickly. The decor is very hip and hipster at the same time. My date said upon walking in,"I can already tell you picked the right place." I got the Huevos Rancheros ($8) without the pork, so it came as is. Corn tortilla topped with marveliously seasoned black beans, fried eggs, roasted tomato salsa, avocado and a dollop of sour cream. I've had different versions of his Hispanic treat but this did not top the list. It was missing something and I can't quite place it. I'll just say that it was ok but not the best. French toast ($6) with strawberries honey butter (oh god it was really good) and powdered sugar. This dish redeemed my Huevos experience. The bread was thick and fluffy and the butter was just superb. You'd think all butter is the same but they clearly add magic to theirs. Patty melt ($6) Angus patty topped with american cheese, caramelized onions and rye bread. My boyfriend and I loved this. It's all about the toast and it did not disappoint. Mac and Cheese ($3.5) the dish do not come with a side but they filled us up so well we didn't need more than 2 for both of us. The mac and cheese is as good as they say. It's extra creamy, clearly they don't slack off on the heavy whipping cream. We washed everything down with their Bloody Mary's. These are very good, they add extra A-1 or Worcestershire sauce and I really liked that. Overall I would love to come back and visit this place. Their brunch is amazing and they serve breakfast all day till close, whaaaaat? You heard me right! The prices aren't too pricey for this part of town and the staff is sweet as southerners are famed to be. read more

Could it be that I have found the best burger in Charleston? I'm not sure but darn was it good. I do not like burgers piled high with a bunch of crap to throw you off. I am a simple person who likes the perfect combination between the bun, meat, and typical condiments. I ordered the single patty and fries. Wow! The fries! Think hand cut shoe string. On to the burger......,they didn't ask me (and I didn't specify) how I wanted it cooked so it came out a little more well done than I would have preferred but it still tasted great. What's up with the bun?! It was a cross between a brioche and those old school awesome cafeteria rolls from school! Perfect. The drinks were great and my wife loved the Moscow mule.
