I thought this was a premium local steak house, so I went there instead of Texas Roadhouse. Prices were high, the meat was tasteless, and an over $30 NY strip didn't include a side salad. The atmosphere reminded me of the 80's. The service was great, maybe because my party was the only one in the restaurant (it was early). The steak was forgettable, and was under seasoned. Access to a pepper grinder would have been better. The only toppings available for the baked potato was butter and sour cream. For the price I expected better. Full disclosure, I did not eat any of the food at this restaurant. I never made it past the hostess as the smell of the building overcame me and I immediately turned around and left. The restaurant reeks like an overflowing colostomy bag. I've worked in the food industry for awhile and an old building is no excuse for that bad of a stench. I have to say I spent 180.00 for the worst cut of steak, beyond salty crab imperial, mushy and overcooked vegetables. We arrived at 300 pm were the only ones there and yet it still took an hour to receive this poorly cooked and prepared food. The best part of the meal was the loaf of warm bread I received. The oyster Rockefeller were small hardly any cheese, a leaf or two of spinach....I don't mind paying big prices for great food, but this was far from great. read more

I've driven past this restaurant for over 20 years and always wanted to try it. We went for my sister's birthday and we were looking forward to a delicious steak dinner. Well we were disappointed, the loaf of bread they served first was fresh and warm, I had the French onion soup which was good, not to salty. We had the calamari which was just OK, not a generous portion and not served hot. I was totally disappointed in my steak, it wasn't a good cut of steak, it tasted like it was prepared an hour or so before and left in a warming tray, it was served almost cold, barely warm at all and as I cut into the steak there was not a drop of juice. It also wasn't very tasteful at all. I had a baked potato with it which was very good. My Dad had French fries with his and said they tasted like they were fried in old stale oil. My sister who rarely complains, even voiced her disappointment in the steak, and they raise angus cows so she knows a good cut of meat. The wait staff was very attentive and service was good, just wish I could say the same about my meal. The restaurant has a dated interior but is well maintained and actually kind of cozy. It gets one star because Red Horse did NOT meet expectations. My wife & i expected this to be a top-shelf steakhouse, given the high cost (steaks were $23-38 per entree). Our total bill was $100. Was confused by the cheese ball and packaged crackers, especially when we saw bread & butter on other tables. Our butter came, but it took 20 minutes for the bread to arrive. The steaks looked as we asked them to be cooked- medium and pink in the middle, but they tasted dry and basically tasteless. And, they were the special- NY strip with a balsamic reduction. The wine list was impressive and we really wished the dining experience and meal would have been as well. The wait-staff was young and awkward. We left thinking we should have gone Longhorn Steakhouse and saved some cash. read more

Everything about this place is fine, but not spectacular. The wine list is okay at best (very few wines are available by the glass). The steaks were good, but not life-changing. The steamed veggies and the caesar were the highlight for me, and that seems a little sad. We didn't have dessert or coffee. Our server didn't write anything down, which was impressive, and he did get our entrees right, but the sides and beverages were wrong for several of us . . . it seemed to me that sometimes you have to suck it up, admit that your brain isn't a steel trap, and write orders down! There were 6 of us-- frankly, I wouldn't judge anyone harshly for writing down orders for 6 people. It would have saved time, money, energy, and our frustration. I was interested to try the Red Horse because it has been a Frederick dining establishment for longer than I've been alive. A group of us decided to go there recently and I genuinely looked forward to it. The waitstaff was prompt for the first half of the night and nearly missing the second. The drinks were all correct and at the table, and the meal was brought out all together (no doubt good choreography by the cooks) and presentation was fine. for me, where the restaurant fell flat was the meal itself. the bread for the table was unremarkable, the Caesar salad was unremarkable, and my entree was unremarkable. I got the 12 oz NY Strip (called the Jeff Recommends) and it seems Jeffs tastes are more attune to Denny's steaks than fine dining. It had a greasy feel in my mouth and limited flavor. It came with a vegetable medley and baked potato. The potato seemed slightly undercooked, but I didn't mind it so much. The vegetable medley consisted of green beans. Someone may want to let them know what a medley is. Regardless, the green beans were quite good, tasting the freshest out of all the meal. Alls said and done at the end of the night, I've paid $50 for a 12 oz steak, green beans, a baked potato, Caesar salad, and a pepsi. Sorry, but I don't think I'll be going back. For $30 I can get the exact same thing at Outback, but with bigger portions and more flavor. As a sidenote, everyone seemed to at least enjoy their meal, but I did recieve confirmation from another member of the party that they wouldn't be returning. Another sidenote: the $50 included an 9 dollar tip. The waitstaff averaged fantastic throughout the meal. if they'd been more attentive during the second half, I probably would've made it a $15 tip. read more

Trying to avoid traffic in route to Gettysburg on a Friday evening I pulled into the only Non-Chain restaurant I could find, which in this case had a lower star rating than I choose, being 3 verse 4. However I felt it deserved the try. As I walked in I found the atmosphere is rustic and comfortable. The hostess immediately greeted me and escorted me to a table, "just as I requested," in back and out of the way. Of course it may have helped the restaurant was sparsely occupied, at least initially, but that soon changed as the dinner crowd rolled in. Staff: The welcoming attitude made a world of difference for me coming from the stop and go traffic on I-15. Needing a break and not wanting to be rushed I asked my server to hold off on each entrée until I was ready for the next and he was more than accommodating...as was the rest of the staff that would come by and check on how I was doing when he was busy with a large table to my right. When it came time to order his honesty meant a world of difference to me. Although, they are primarily a steak house the steaks are not aged. He also knew the full menu and how to smile. Meal: I started off with my typical dirty martini made with Tito's vodka, which came as ordered it but was only "good" as it needed a bit more dirty. I transitioned into the Italian Wedding Soup that came with toasted French roll, served with roasted garlic in oil and another plate of butter. The bread was wonderful and the toasted garlic was tasted well but would have been better had it been in smaller pieces for easier placement on the loaf. The Wedding Soup was also good but needed seasoning, harkening to the possibility that it came from a can. My main meal was the one of the specials, Beef Stroganoff. It was done extremely well. Seasoned appropriately, steak cooked to perfection and the noodles and sauce something I would have suspected came from a fine restaurant in Manhattan. Excellent choice. Desert: The homemade desert by a local bakery was also very good. I decided on the Blackberry and Peach a la mode and despite the whipped cream tasting as if it was Cool-whip, I guess I'm spoiled from my wife's homemade whipped cream I was pleased. The coffee came with international delight creamer and was a nice quality. Overall: The bathrooms were very clean and efficiently situated. The dinning room was separate / across from the bar separated by swinging doors keeping the right atmosphere for both. I especially enjoyed the large fireplace that was central to the dinning area. In the end I have very little to grumble over, and whatever I could complain about was overtaken by the very efficient service with a smile. I don't know how the seafood or steaks are but for the meal and service I had I give it four (4) stars. I look forward to returning to Red Horse on my next trip to Gettysburg,...hopefully with my wonderful wife and family. read more

My wife and I met some of her friends here for dinner while we were in Maryland. Unfortunately this place did not meet our expectations. The steaks (I had prime rib and my wife had the filet) were generally tough. Both of our baked potatoes were not cooked all of the way through. I did have to send my first prime rib back because it was significantly overdone. And the best part of the chocolate cake with peanut butter icing was the peanut butter icing -- the chocolate cake was quite dry. Not everything was a complete bust. Was looking forward to a great steak and some crab cakes...what a disappointment. Wait staff was slow and drinks were usually empty for 5-10 minutes before someone would ask if we needed refills. Then you would wait another 10 or 15 to get them. Several of the steaks were over cooked and the replacement took 20 minutes. The grill room is scary! It looks like a place where a horror film could be made. It might impress a date if the best place she ever at was Denny's. Waiter followed us out the door because he thought we screwed him on the tip. It's a tip!!!! The better you do, the more you get. I think a big part of the problem is the bar and the kitchen...way too slow. Find somewhere else to go. 5 star prices should get you 5 star service and food. We were extremely disappointed in what was supposed to be our Anniversary Dinner. When I called up earlier I told them it was our anniversary and the person on the phone said she would make it special with a seperate dining room for us. When we got there we were seated in the basement (which we were told on the phone was a lower level). It was extremely musty and had a mold smell. Our table, for our anniversary, had nothing on it. It was not even set. The server told us they are all dealing with the Pandemic..(I don't buy this). The server, however, was excellent. The issue was the price, food and atmosphere. Here goes...our French Onion soup was bland and cold.Not even made with traditional Gruyere (I can forgive that..). My salad was charged an upcharge of 2.00 for crumbled blue cheese (it was a tiny bit of blue cheese powder and I never asked for extra blue cheese). The bacon was fatty. The blue cheese dressing was good though. My shrimp cocktail was delicious however. The steak, NY STRIP, was cold, fatty and undercooked. My spouse's filet was cold and not butterflied as was asked. I was charge another fee of 3.00 for asparagus subsitution as a vegetable. On the website it says "Half priced drinks and appetizers-3-7pm, they wouldn't honor this!!" The price of this meal for two-get ready-I did leave a 25.00 tip because the server was excellent, and, nice..was..180.00-very pricey..and probably the worst restaurant I have ever eaten in. Not very impressed with this place. Mixed bag. Steak was burned on the outside and undercooked red in the middle. My son loves steak but wouldn't eat his. It didn't smell right either maybe because it was burned. French fries weren't great. The green beans were good. Bread was pretty good too. The place had a bit of a musty smell. But the ambiance was nice (although a bit dark) and the wait staff were very nice and attentive. Service was pretty fast. They did credit us for my son's steak. Don't think we will be back. This is a cute little steak joint right off the interstate. It also does decent seafood. I know because I had their apricot scallops. It's a tad difficult to get to because of the way the roads are arranged but, if you know where you're going, it's worth it. I actually showed up here for a dinner with some colleagues so we were in their "private room" downstairs. Plenty of room but not much ambiance. All the ambiance is upstairs in the main doing area. I took a peak and it looked pretty homey. Lots of wood. Low light. The staff is super friendly and the prices are pretty decent for the quality of the food. "They ask so much, and give so little in return" For the price, this place was horribly disappointing. Some positive...inside is very beautiful and inviting, staff was very friendly. Service was incredibly slow on a night where they weren't even busy. Every aspect of the service took forever, if you don't have at least two hours to kill, don't go here. Now onto what really matters...the food! Beer and wine were good, they at least had good choices there. Bread was good, not as good as a Texas Roadhouse roll, but hot and fresh. After that, all downhill. French onion soup was likely microwaved. Main course was a complete disappointment. Duck had little flavor and was barely warm, green beans were flavorless and cold, mash potatoes weren't any better than what you would get from Great Value Instant (and were cold). Steak was rubbery and by itself not flavorful- when you pay $30+ for a steak you expect it to have been aged at least a little. The main courses here, for $24-$52, are blown away by the likes of Golden Coral's buffet food, and are more what you would expect from your Mall foodcourt kiosk selling for $7, giving it you to on a Styrofoam plate/container. Oh, and there "special", was nothing more than that rubbery piece of underflavored steak smothered in some basic Dijon mustard sauce that attempted to mask the poor steak quality. Their so called "jumbo" shrimp, by the way, are anything but. These aren't 4 tiger shrimp you get stuffed for $25, they are probably in that 20-25 size range before cooking. This one wasn't my meal, so I can't comment on taste, but If I had ordered and gotten those 4 measly shrimp it would have gone straight back. We got desert, against better judgement. Chocolate cake was dry and stale, after two bites we returned it and asked to have it taken off our check. Waitress tried it herself and admitted it was dry and complained to the kitchen. Had better quality out of two day old donuts sitting with the lid open in my works breakroom. This place, like many Frederick restaurants, is making a living on "prestige". Make you wait, overpriced, looks fancy, but at the end of the day the food isn't worth a third of what you pay. Could have had a better meal from literally anywhere else on the Golden Mile, including that crappy KFC down the street. read more

I am from the concrete jungle so this is complete opposite of what I'm used to, however this gem of a location is exactly what I would dream of in regards to restaurants close to where I am staying. I have had the pleasure of knowing the servers and bartenders who have been very warm and welcoming as well as meeting regulars that have been very entertaining to say the least. Some people may say that it is pricy, however I disagree, the quality of the appetizers and food has been phenomenal and spot on to what has been described. It was 20+ years ago since the last time I had eaten at The Red Horse--I was a teenager--so my wife, my daughter, and myself decided to give it a try for my wife's birthday. The first thing I noticed when walking through the door was the place had not changed at all in terms of their decor and interior. However, we were not there for the atmosphere; we were there to eat! Honestly, The Red Horse's menu leaves a lot to be desired. It is two pages total and there are *no* poultry dishes whatsoever. I believe you can add grilled chicken to your caesar salad but that is it. There were also *no* specials the night we were there and while they do give you warm bread, none of the entrées come with soup or salad. I ordered the "Red Horse Cut Filet" which is an 18 ounce filet mignon, and I ordered it medium-rare; it came out medium. Very rarely (no pun intended) when I eat steak do I ever use A.1. Sauce. This steak, however, needed it and it was unquestionably not worth $52.00. My wife ordered the "Steakhouse Sirloin Filet." She ordered it medium; it came out well done. She said the roasted garlic mashed potatoes had hardly any flavor other than an overabundance of garlic. Our daughter ordered the Larger Caesar salad and she said it was just "okay." Perhaps back in the '80s--in Frederick--The Red Horse was the nonpareil of steak houses. Sadly, this is no longer the case. If you want a good steak save your money and go to Tasting Room, Dutch's Daughter, or even Texas Roadhouse. On our way home, my wife and I both asked ourselves the question: How in the world has The Red Horse not gone belly up? We can only assume it is because of the Comfort Inn right next door (i.e., out-of-towners who are looking for a convenient place to eat) and then as another reviewer mentioned an older/senior clientele. read more

We have visited this restaurant before and i don't remember it being so bad. First, one of the busboys was chewing gum so loudly that you could hear it across the restaurant. The restaurant is so poorly lit that you cant read the menu or the kids cant color their kids menus, which was actually my only favorite part of the restaurant. Old school steak house exactly how they should be. The only thing missing was red naugahyde booths. The service at this place was great, very attentive and friendly. Our server was a professional who had been with the place for year and took great care of us. The steaks were cooked right as requested, the shrimp cocktail ice cold and the bottles of proceso flowing. Went to Frederick for first time in a few years Friday night for dinner, drinks, etc at 8 p.m. sharp and asked the witch (Colleen) to be seated at the bar. Nope COVID restriction and sat me at a table that I asked to be properly cleaned due to previous dinners. Ordered a drink from a Sierra. 15 minutes later she brought the drink and could not answer why I was not allowed to sit at the bar when Colleen just sat someone there. Order French Onion soup appetizer from Sierra that I sent back because it was cold and to darn salty. I also asked for butter for my bread. She came back WITHOUT the butter but with the soup that I canceled. GENIUS!!! Ordered the steak medium/rare. It came well done with a lot of fat & gristle. Sent that back to. Sierra said the kitchen is closed (it was 8:55 p.m. Friday night). I cancelled everything. Bring my check and the manager. Dan the manager came out and said next time you come I'm usually the bartender and I'll take care of you (WINK, WINK). I said I'll never come here again asked for owner to call me. After traveling back to area after nearly 15 years, to say the least we were not impressed. Same carpet, same decor and same furniture. Food and surroundings, were not the same as we remember. Steaks and vegetables were cold and a very loud group of Lawyers sat on the other side of restaurant. So loud I could not hear my wife sitting next to me. Also although the whole place was empty excluding loud attorneys a group was seated next to us and immediately backed chairs into my back. They were so close I was able to read her text messages. Time 6:30pm - no space to sit down for a drink. asked for a table to sit down and eat we got a table at 7 pm , waited for service .... 10 mins drinks & appetizer took 30 mins ordered food, then 1 hour later dinner arrived cold & no taste to t-bone steak. now i have eaten here several yeas ago. back then the bar hasn't changed the food was ok. they didn't comp anything for forcing us to extend our night & eat else where. i myself will not return until something changes. read more

Parking was a nightmare. Once I got in, staff were hostile and telling me that I couldn't get a table and seemed to want me to shut up and leave. I had to insist I had a reservation. They finally looked in the system and saw I had a reservation. Good service -- at first. Throughout the meal, the waiter progressively ceased to appear. I had to call the waiter over for the last half of the meal. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium well -- aka slightly pink in middle. Steak came medium rare. Tasted good, but too bloody for my tastes. So I asked them to cook it to medium well, please. They left, then came back with it only warmed up -- not even cooked more. The amount of pink was the same. At that point, five waiters -- not even kidding -- five waiters kept asking us if we were done, if we wanted the check. Keep in mind our plates were only half empty and we were still actively eating. After the third time, we told them if we were done eating, we'd let them know. They acknowledged it, but asked us again three more times afterwards anyway if we were done. Very pushy and anxious to get our table cleared away. There were three others dining with me. Their steaks were cooked exactly to specifications, but had no flavor. Two things they had going for them were a good atmosphere and quite a variety in food selection. All in all, all four of us concluded afterwards that due to how pushy the staff were, and due to substandard service, we would not be returning to the Red Horse cafe. My wife and my meal in total cost me $75, not including tip. My two other dining companions' bill cost them $95 not including tip, but that was due to their ordering a bottle of wine. Plates' cost averaged $20 to $50. Pricey, so if you're budget-conscious, this is not the place to eat at. read more

Just got back from a dinner seminar at the Red Horse. The meal was a disaster. We were given a choice of steak, salmon, and chicken. My husband and I both ordered the steak, since it is a steak house. Everyone at our table was served except me, and the waitress leaned over and told me she hadn't forgotten me, but there was a mixup with another table and I would have mine in just a minute. Meanwhile they served the rest of the other tables. Next, they started putting out sour cream (most people were at least halfway through their baked potato at this point--why wasn't the sour cream put out first?). I asked the waitress again about my meal and she told me she would get it as soon as she finished putting out the rest of the sour cream. I waited some more. Everyone had been served and most people were finishing. I asked again and she said, "You ordered the blackened salmon or something?". I told her no--I had ordered the steak, medium rare. She said she would check on it, started towards the bar and said, "Here it is--it was here right in front of me all this time" and laughed. No apologies. By this time, my husband was totally done, and I was worried how cold it would be and whether the meat had continued to get more well done from sitting. I quickly sliced into it before she got away and it was just slightly pink in the center--definitely not medium rare-/more like medium! (the last time I ate here, I ordered it rare and it was pretty much raw, so I figured medium rare would be perfect). She took it back and said they would do a new one. I asked for my potato and vegetables, at least, and she seemed surprised, but I said, "At least I can eat something". (It was about 8 pm by this point). I waited and she never brought the vegetables or potato until she brought the steak with it. The baked potato and veggies were very hot--they must have nuked them, since it had been quite awhile. But the potato was still under done. And the veggies (green beans, wax beans, and carrots) were tasteless. But the worst part--the steak was almost raw (even though it had taken quite awhile to do a new one). I ate the very edges, then asked for a box, telling the waitress it was very rare. She asked if I wanted them to cook it some more and I said that, no, I would take it home and cook it myself (do what's the point of going to a restaurant?). By the way, the flavor was good (once I cooked it at home), but it was a bit chewy. Dessert was supposed to be included in the meal--vanilla ice cream with raspberry sauce, or raspberry sherbet. People waited and waited and finally 2/3 or more of the people had left since no dessert was appearing. Finally it arrived, but, rather than ask people what they wanted, they brought a tray of one type and tried to push that on people, regardless of what they wanted. When she got to us, the tray she had was sherbet. When I said I preferred the ice cream, she acted incredulous and put out that I would ask for the ice cream and not take what she had. When she finally got it (I was last to be served), it was a very small serving, compared to the others--guess she got the last word in. Not my first time here but by far my worst visit. After my daughter and I placed our order with our waitress, we ended up waiting well over an hour for our food. A couple at the table behind us, who were obviously "regulars", came in and were seated several minutes after we were seated and ordered their food well after we ordered ours but yet they got their food at least 15-20 minutes prior to us. Our waitress did a pretty good job at being non existent and we actually had more interaction with the bus boy than with her, I actually got to the point where I had to go track her down and ask her where our food was. The $ 43.00 steak that I ordered was riddled with fat and was sub par for the amount of money they were asking for it, I was extremely disappointed. You would think that when a restaurant is asking top dollar for their menu items that you would get high quality service and high quality food. They were a "fail" on both tonight. read more

Shitty food and shitty service in a restaurant that should have been renovated 50 years ago. Try the Outback across the street or Miyakos.

They cut the steak to check how it was cooked which drained all of the juices. The steak lacked flavor.
