This is my favorite restaurant in San Marcos. Unfortunately, the parking is terrible & it is not easily accessible for handicap.

Wow! This place, just amazing! My husband and I have come here for brunch lately and it never disappoints. Pictured is the spinach artichoke dip and it tastes homemade! The Belgian waffle with fruit is SO good! Friendly and fast service too! My husband had the salmon and he said it was perfect, which is hard to do with salmon! I love how root cellar is coming out with more vegan options! I love going to root cellar because of the nice ambience, good food, and nice staff! The staff has always been accommodating to my diet. I've tried the beet burger and vegan spaghetti. Both were really good! Vegan/vegetarian specials are on thursdays so I'm going to try to go to more! I came across this place on Yelp and was intrigued by the pictures. I had to see this underground cafe for myself. I figured it would get busy as I was going on a Sunday so I decided to go early... well I got there at about 10am. It wasn't as early as I had planned to beat the crowd, but it was fine because I got in and got seated (table for 1). They offer indoor and outdoor seating and the restaurant is pretty big once inside so if I did have to wait I couldn't imagine it being that long. I really enjoyed the esthetics of the restaurant. It feels intimate and comfortable. I also noticed that it seems like a more mature crowd that comes here. My server promptly came and greeted me, I ordered an orange juice and water to sip on and look over the menu a bit longer. I went ahead with the French toast and side of homestyle potatoes. The French toast came with 3 slices, they were pretty good. I liked that the crust was still pretty soft. The homestyle potatoes were just OK. In my picture you'll see seasoning on the plate, but they had not taste. They were very bland. read more

I've been twice, once for brunch and the second for dinner. I enjoyed both my meals. What brings my rating down is that I tried calling the restaurant before heading over (my 2nd time there) to see what their wait was & was told there was no wait. Showed up 5-7mins later to see the waiting area packed and the wait time at 45mins. I thought ok? The place really filled up that quick? We were sat close to the host stand and during our meal, we overheard the hostess take a call where they told the person there was no wait... yet the waiting area was full of people. read more

Honestly, I don't know much of the brewery portion of this place but I do know more about the café place. I never ate in a cellar and it can be a bit claustrophobic. It became cool. My friend and I were seated at the bar like window table. I do recommend having breakfast there. It's really good all around. Good coffee and good food. I had half of the biscuits and gravy which I haven't had in ages. It hit the spot. Then I ordered the breakfast wrap which had eggs, sausage and cheese. Came here with friends based on Yelp reviews. It was Sunday at 11:00. We waited for about 50 minutes to be seated. When we did get a table, our waiter took our drink and food order pretty quickly and was helpful in avoiding us paying for six flights of mimosas when four carafes would be cheaper. Bartender messed up though and made one carafe and 3 other individual mimosas, which were comped. The remaining carafes finally made our table 10 minutes later. They also ran out of biscuits, so one member of our party had to change his order. Mind you, breakfast is served until 5:00PM, and this was around noon. Is it really that hard to make biscuits from scratch? Anyhow, after about 45-50 minutes of waiting for our food, the waiter apologized for the delay, said the kitchen had been slammed before we came in and gave us a free appetizer of chips and spinach artichoke dip, which was very good. Finally our food came, which was very good. I can see why it is so popular and highly-recommended. I personally had the Brewhouse Burger with mashed potatoes on the side. It was wonderful. I'm not even a big burger guy, and I gobbled that sh*t down. No complaints in the quality of food department. However, our waiter forgot who among our group of 8 was together and was separate, didn't know how to split the 4 carafes he said we should order six ways to accommodate two couples and two individuals. All in all, the food was excellent and worthy of the 4 stars it currently has, maybe even deserving of higher. Communication between the staff, staff experience and timely delivery of food seem to be a little lacking though. If you're not hungry and in a hurry, this place is definitely worth a visit. read more

We reserved a table for 7 and waited for over an hour and forty five minutes. The hostess said it be 45 minutes at most, and when we got back to check on it, she said our table was getting cleaned then sat another group in our table , was rude and rolling her eyes at us. I have loved root cellar for years but when going back I noticed that they took the best thing on their menu off (the chicken and waffles) and they have seemed to make their portions a lot smaller which is a tad disappointing- all in all they need to bring back the chicken and waffles as well as the decent portion size because when paying $20 for an entree I'd expect for it to be a size that is at least filling. read more

This is a cute hidden gem that I went for a date night. It was cute and I had the pecan crusted chicken with mashed potatoes and fried asparagus which was delicious. The meals I have had here are exceptional. Their hand crafted meals are superb! My friends and I came here on a whim when we visited for spring break and found that it is, hands down, the best place to eat in town. If you're 21 and over I would seriously recommend coming here between 4 and 6 for happy hour, and If I may make a suggestion I would advise you have the sangria. I would give this restaurant 3.5 if that were an option as the service was friendly and quick. I ordered the hummus and chose the pita chips as the option but it actually turned out to be pita bread that was extremely soft rather than the crunchy chip I was expecting. If I go back I would probably choose the fresh vegetables. I ordered the salmon with the garlic mashed potatoes and the sauteed spinach the salmon was crispy and cooked properly but the balsamic was scant and though it was very pretty drizzled over the plate it basically stuck to the plate so that it couldn't actually flavor my food as much as I would have liked. The garlic potatoes with the scallions in it were good and the spinach was good. I would definitely come back and try the eggplant sandwich and perhaps the Citrus chicken. The menu definitely had some interesting choices and I'm also interested in their brunch menu, particularly their French toast. I must say that I was here approximately seven or eight years ago and I did not choose to come back because of the musty smell in the restaurant and that seems to have been abated making it a more pleasant dining experience. read more

Ok. I struggled for at least 30 seconds before deciding on a rating of 4 over 3 stars. If you don't want to read my thorough review skip to the end. The food was great. Really, it was all delicious. My husband and sister both got the breakfast wrap which I tried and it was delicious. They both said the breakfast potatoes were extra good. I had the cherry hazelnut oatmeal (spoiler alert: it's regular oatmeal with 4 dried cherries and 7 hazelnuts on top) which was yummy cause I love oatmeal. I had eggs over medium, they were good. I had the house salad with tangy vinegarette. That vinegarette changed my life. Coffee was great. Mimosas we're "average" according to my husband. Here comes the 3 star part. The service was so trash. Our waiter was struggling so hard. And it didn't seem like he was having a hard day. It seemed like he was a terrible waiter. 20 minutes to get our order. 25 to get the coffee we ordered when we first sat down. I ordered toast 5 minutes into our meal. He asked, "How do you want that?" And when I looked at him puzzled, he clarified by listing the types of bread in a tone which indicated he thought I was an actual dumb. For starters the beer was warm, not cool but warm. Not just the tap beer but the canned beer as well. We had to ask for frosted glasses just so that we could drink them down. Our spinach artichoke dip was really good so we had high expectations for the main course. Well that was very disappointing. My daughter had the creamy Mac and cheese and it looked fabulous. Looks were very deceiving at best. It had no taste at all, even after adding salt and pepper it was still just bland. My wife had the chicken with mashed potato's and the Mac and cheese. Food sat in the window way too long it was cold. I had the ham sandwich and tortilla soup. Sandwich was good but the soup was cold too. So not the best experience even though the restaurant had great potential it fell by the wayside due to warm beer and cold food. read more

Super cute place! We opted to get lunch here and it was delicious. I got the turkey tomato sandwich with kettle chips and my husband got the Caribbean stacker with mashed potatoes. Both sandwiches were on point. My only complaint were the bathrooms. The hallway is super narrow like two people can't stand side by side so you have to do this awkward shuffle to get by someone. But I get it this is a really old building and that was probably the best solution. I will for sure be back. read more

Super disappointing meal. We arrived early on Wednesday evening. There were only 3 tables of customers besides us. We ordered the beer bread with honey butter. We received 3 thick slices of mostly burnt bread (burnt side turned down) with a side of butter that tasted like it had honey and cinnamon. It tasted like stale french toast. I had the beet and goat cheese salad. It was all kale, a tiny amount of goat cheese, the beets were the best part. The vinaigrette had no flavor, the shredded carrots were like cardboard. Wonderful, wish we had something like this in San Antonio! I had the frittata with tomatoes. The serving was generous (I enjoyed leftovers for lunch the next day).
