I've been here three or four times now. It's usually a fantastic experience - (once got the ahi salad and was really disappointed.)Tonight's was one of the better meals. My hubby had the Root Cellar Burger - he never gets anything different. It's like dessert with the bacon bourbon jam and goat cheese and fried green tomato it's delicious. I had the hot honey chicken sandwich which was good but I didn't actually taste any hot or honey. But luckily the chicken itself was delicious with yummy batter. Loaded baked potato was dry unfortunately. Kale side salad was super delicious. The best thing on the menu is probably the southern fried egg rolls. They are so so good and crispy. read more

Terrible customer service. Placed an online order and it processed and charged. Never got a confirmation and they wouldn't answer the phone. Called the other store and they said they are open and should be fine. Got there, order was cancelled, because they had internet issues. No apologies, they didn't care. We were given the wrong fish and told they would correct it on the bill but they didn't and when we realized it we didn't feel like waiting another 30 minutes to correct it. I found myself in Lexington SC at lunch time yesterday and decided it would be fun to try a new restaurant that I had never visited. I found the Root Cellar and thought since the parking lot seemed almost full that I was sure that I had found a good dining experience. I was seated very quickly and since it was around 12:15pm I had expected to have a few minutes wait before being approached for an order. That turned out to be longer than 10 minutes and I asked for unsweet tea with lemon. When the waitress brought the tea without lemon I again asked for lemon. She was nice but seemed very busy. I placed my order and had excitement when I had seen brussel sprouts as an option for a side. When she said that they were out I chose a side salad instead. When the salad came out almost immediately I saw that it suffered from lack of refrigeration and didn't complain just enjoyed the great blue cheese dressing that accompanied it. When the meal arrived I was taken back by the lack of eye appeal. It was served up without any appeal. I had a stuffed potato, meatloaf (which was there special) and their version of field peas which they have a name for that I had never heard before. The lunch included a tiny piece of southern style cornbread (served with no butter). I ran out of tea during the meal and the waitress came up and asked me if I was through and I said some tea would be nice. Later she arrived with some. I had to wait for my check and the owner walked around my table twice before taking my used dishes I had sat off to the side on my table of one. When I got my check since I had been in the restaurant for over one hour, I jumped up and headed to the register. I again waited for more than just a few minutes to pay. The owner told me that his wife was offsite doing a catering event and they found themselves short handed on the front of the house. I suspect they could have scheduled an extra person to cover her responsibilities but chose not to. I did not have the experience that I had hoped for. The field peas, meatloaf and potato didn't bring out any new tasteful experience. The food seemed bland and lacked eye appeal and with tip was over $15.00 for lunch. Not somewhere I plan to revisit. read more

For the most part it was really good. But I like crispy onion rings that was the only thing I didn't like. I only had two sides but it still is a really good portion size. The corn bread was the best I've ever had. It is very sweet and soft. Also the loaded baked potatoes are so good. Would come back again. read more

So the steaks were cooked perfectly and tasted wonderful. Too bad the take out person didn't hand us the whole order, no salads. Oh and they were out of baked potatoes so the substituted. Went last night. 50/50 result. Hubby ordered house salad with chicken $12. Menu says mixed greens, grape tomatoes cukes, shaved radishes and cheese. Salad came with ALL iceberg, 3 grape tomatoes, 3 thin slices of cuke, red onion and NO cheese. However the chicken was tasty. Waitress response was "we changed salad after menu printed". Owner came by on his own to check in with guests and said they had had a vendor problem & kitchen too hot for mixed greens. No offer to make it right, give a discount, just offered excuses without being pressed. He missed an opportunity.... Other order was the kale salad with chicken and it was excellent. The almonds were not toasted crunchy, they were soft like they had been poached or something. But tasted good. Wanted a baked potato but they were out and making more...it was 5pm. Alright y'all, this is one of the cutest, nicest places to have lunch (or dinner) around. Our waitress, Kelly, was so sweet, attentive and enthusiastic! The Blackened Catfish BLT was one of the freshest and best BLTs I have ever had. Maybe would not recommend the Shrimp & Grits but all else was really great! We had not eaten here in over a year but decided to try takeout. The process was good. The pimento cheeseburger and onion rings were good. There is a little spice which I enjoy. Our only complaint was with the 4 vegetable plate. Portions were definitely small, especially on collards and green beans- think little more than a salad dressing amount. The containers were half full. The other issue which stopped us from eating there before was the amount of salt. The vegetables were heavy on salt. If they could adjust salt and go back to pre Covid portions, it would be my favorite Lexington location.. Patrons can add more salt but you can't take it out. For $24, there has to be more to vegetables and a burger - no drink. read more

I'd love to give this place 5 stars, but the service just won't allow me to! The food was absolutely delicious! Our server was very friendly, but she was very absent and someone aloof. It took entirely too long for her to take our orders and refill our drinks. She'd disappear for very lengthy periods of time and only take a second to rush past and ask if we were ok. Had been wanting to try the Root Cellar for months. It didn't dissapoint. I had the berry salad add blackened catfish. It was amazing. My wife had a sandwich. It was good, but mine was better. We had dinner here tonight and had a fabulous experience. We are from NY and are just visiting. We were looking for something local and this had good reviews. We were not disappointed. The service was fantastic; prompt and attentive without hovering. We had one of each of the appetizers and they were all terrific. foe dinner, we had the fried chicken, fried chicken sandwich, shrimp and grits, and the Cobb salad (group of 7). Everything was delicious, but especially the chicken sandwich and the Mac n cheese. The banana pudding dessert was the perfect size and just the right sweetness. Horrible customer service! I have now had TWO online orders cancelled by this restaurant. The first time they cancelled 60 seconds after I placed my order with no explanation. When I called I was told I "selected two sides when the meal only came with one" which is not even possible in their online ordering system. No apology was offered and they did not even attempt to rectify the situation. Next time I ordered lunch online, my card was charged but after 20 minutes of not receiving the email as to when my order would be ready, I tried to call. Their phone number didn't work. So I called their other location and the lady who answered suggested we just drive to the restaurant while she tried to contact someone because the owners hadn't told her of any problems so they should have our order. As we were pulling into the parking lot my order was cancelled. The hostess stated that their phones and internet were down - apparently someone was able to get online to cancel my order. Again no apology was offered, no one offered to prepare our order then, and no manager came to speak with us. I was just told I could resubmit my order when they got the system fixed. I had been wanting to try this place because everyone said it was so good. I was slightly disappointed, our fried oysters and my fish were soggy because they weren't drained properly and had grease pooled underneath. My sweet potato casserole was basically mashed sweet potatoes with a dash of sugar, kinda bland. So, I would give the food a 3 but I would give the service a 4 because our waitress did her best considering how busy the place was and maybe that was the reason our food wasn't so great. This Sunday was a return because we had such a good meal on our first visit. The fried green tomatoes were just as good as our last visit......However.... I ordered shrimp and grits... do not order! I was sorely disappointed... the grits were bland and soupy, the "sauce" was greasy and slick tasting- had to wipe it off the shrimp... no sausage, served with cornbread... did not even taste. I eat gluten free. Shrimp was ok, thank goodness. My husband was ok... he had the roast beef Sunday Special, collards and Brussels sprouts......no surprise there, as the roast is the kind you get from The Chef's store. Just heat and serve. I wish there were ways to rate the food and service separately. The food was very good and well prepared. Service was less than stellar. My entree came with a salad that I never got. The explanation was they got backed up. Apparently backed up only on salads because my steak came out in a decent amount of time. But no salad. It took forever to get my drink (water) and to get mo order taken. Server walked by my table several times and never stopped or made eye contact. She did get the manager to adjust my check for the amount of the salad (I asked), and he did. But he never came by my table to acknowledge their error or apologize. In a world where customer service in general is disappearing, it's not difficult to stand out in a crowd. Sadly, they didn't. read more

Our family go to when the kids want chicken tenders which have always been great. We usually start out with the southern egg rolls which are great! I usually go with the burger with the side of brussel sprouts (these are hit and miss) but if you like brussel sprouts then no worries. My wife usually ends up with a salad and finishes off the girls chicken tenders which for a kids meal is a pretty big portion, and it ends in a treat so win! They always have my go to beer, Catabawa White Zombie so that probably hit it with the 5/5, friendly wait staff, good atmosphere, enjoy yourself! read more

Had a very nice meal at The Root Cellar. I had the buttermilk fried chicken, and the food and service were very good, no complaints here. I would add that they have acoustic foam on the ceiling to dampen noise, which I found a pleasant and welcome break from the current restaurant trend of making the space deliberately noisy with hard surfaces and walls. It made for a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere in which to dine. I'll definitely be back. read more

Dined here on a Friday night. My husband called ahead and was told there was a 30 minute wait so he asked to put our name on the list, and was told that they had us down. When we arrived the hostess said she did not have our names down, she was pretty rude about it considering we did call and speak to someone. She should have just apologized and said she would add us and seat us shortly instead of arguing with us. We still ended up waiting around 25 minutes. We were finally sat near the back, front? Of the restaurant. We started off with the fried green tomatoes which were excellent. They came out piping hot with a yummy mayo based spicy sauce. Outstanding!! For my entrée I ordered the fried chicken because it was listed as a house specialty, my husband got the shrimp and grits. Our food came very quickly, we had nearly finished the appetizer when our entrées came, good service! My fried chicken came with macaroni and cheese and literally a tablespoon of grits. I didn't miss the grits because they had zero flavor. The macaroni was not great. My chicken was a little over done, it wasn't golden brown, and perhaps it sat in the fryer for too long, so it was also chewy. The white gravy was good, but I could taste the flour in it. My husband was pretty disappointed with his meal, again the grits were tasteless, the tasso sauce had great flavor but there was very little of it, also it only came with 5, quite small, shrimp. He ended up eating most of my food because he was still hungry. Both meals came with a starter salad that was really good, I enjoyed the ranch dressing. It was probably Kraft though :-P Overall our entrées were underwhelming, the fried green tomatoes were spot on. I'm glad we tried it, but it's just not our cup of tea! I heard complaints about the service, but it seems they have worked those kinks out. Our waitress was great, knowledgeable, fast and attentive. It is very small in here, especially the waiting area. The parking lot is a logistical nightmare, especially if you pull in and it's full, backing out requires skill and patience. read more

This place was not what I was expecting, though not necessarily in a bad way. The food is much more "down home country" than one would expect from the more upscale vibe they are trying to give off. The food is pretty good. A little over salted. The service is great. The salad dressings taste bottled. They have a section of "soups, sandwiches, and wraps." Hit this new Lexington spot up the other night, and was mostly pleased. The restaurant was packed but service was on point in all areas, which is surprising for a new restaurant. Server was attentive enough to our menu customizing needs. Food was good, the root vegetables were awesome, A+. My one suggestion is more vegetarian options. Usually when you get a farm to table hip southern fare restaurant such as this there's at least one veg option, the Root Cellar has none really minus salads and sides. I am writing this review for the new Batesburg-Leesville location. I never write reviews but use Yelp often when looking for restaurants. That being said, this burger took me completely by surprise. I had The Root Cellar Burger cooked to medium and it was absolutely perfect. The others in my party enjoyed their menu items as well but do not waste your time on another menu item. Get The Root Cellar Burger and thank me later. Absolute 5+ star. read more
