I picked this cafe randomly while in the area because it had grass fed and organic food, but was immediately impressed that they had two amazing Keto items!! The keto quiche with almond flour crust was to die for!!! But I didn't have to die because it was ultra low carb and listed the net carb count on the menu, so it was a safe food for me. LI'm not exaggerating when I say it's one of the best things I've ever eaten at a cafe! It had only 6 g of net carbs and was also vegan and gluten-free. It was so good, everyone I was dining with wanted to order it. As a Type 1 diabetic who needs to carefully control my carb intake and know exactly how many carbs are in food so that I can take the appropriate amount of insulin, eating outside of my home often feels like a huge game of risk. So when I encounter a place that has keto items on the menu and lists the amount of net carbs so that I know how much insulin to take, I am actually overwhelmed with gratitude. When there's an item like this on a menu for anyone on a keto diet, of which there's so many of us for many different reasons, I feel like the people making that decision are showing a kindness and respect to the diversity of their customers' needs. It's the most welcoming thing a business can do. My dream is that one day, every cafe offers this. This quiche was so good, I would be willing to make the drive to Westlake Village just to eat it. The staff was also really kind, checking other sugar and carb counts for other dishes so that I can understand more about the menu. Everything at The Royal Egg was just all class. Not what it used to be. Although I continue to appreciate the quality of the ingredients and the concept, the experience has diminished significantly... especially the service. Today, I felt rushed, even though there was nobody in line behind me. The matcha latte arrived lukewarm and gritty. The croissant was gooey (not airy) and too sweet. There was a hair in my bowl; which happens and I don't freak about these things, but it just wasn't handled well enough. I ended up watching my son eat his $30 burger while I sipped my cold latte. The bread was freshly baked and toasted perfectly. My daughter got the French toast which was cooked perfectly that you could cut it with just a fork. It came with strawberries and blueberries and was delicious. They share a parking lot with a few other restaurants and shops but there was plenty of parking. A mandatory 15 percent gratuity for counter service with no wait staff is hard to justify, especially when breakfast burritos are twenty two dollars and a simple breakfast for two can creep up toward eighty dollars. That would maybe be easier to swallow if the portions and quality were holding steady, but they are not. Portions are clearly shrinking, and the ingredient quality feels like it has slipped compared to what this place used to offer. The yogurt bowl is the most obvious downgrade. It very clearly seems like they switched from a fresher, more distinctive yogurt to a cheaper, generic one, which removes a big part of why people ordered it in the first place. When prices keep rising while quality and portions go the opposite direction, it starts to feel less like paying for a premium experience and more like being nickel and dimed.
