The food here was very good so was the service. We got pimento cheese while we waited for one more person. We asked for more bread for that and was brought about 5 more pieces. One of our party ordered muscles and was given 2 pieces of bread. She or course asked for more, that's what muscles are all about!! We were charged $6 for the extra bread. Its not the money and we weren't nor were we expecting any compensation, but as a courtesy we believe they should've told us they were charging. We paid the bill and asked someone to listen to how we felt about the charge. Well, this was not the person they should ever let talk to a customer. He was defensive and had excuse after excuse. We didn't want money back just someone to acknowledge our grievances. You know, we wouldv'e been fine without his remarks. Someone needs to train him on how to talk to customers!! read more

We came to Savory Grain for Saturday dinner. The place looked empty but apparently all the tables were reserved so we sat at the bar without any wait. We ordered Ribeye come with mashed potato and brussel sprouts, and meatloaf with mac and cheese and kale. Steak was grilled to perfection with not a lot of seasoning. It was good but would not blow your mind. Mashed potatoes was pretty average. The food was lukewarm when it came to the table. There were spots in the mash potatoes that were a bit cold. Meatloaf was well seasoned but again seemed to be at room temperature. Overall, sides were good but all the food was lukewarm. It was not a bad meal but not an outstanding meal either. read more

Can you say, "YUM!!"? This place took me by surprise. That little area down there is definitely starting to step up their food game with places like this one. My friend James and I went here for a dinner to catch up with each other and we were impressed. We started out with the sausage dip and moved on to the spaghetti squash and Venison meatloaf entrees. We were definitely not disappointed in any of the dishes. The dip was tasty and appropriately sized - we were able to get a nice snack before dinner and not be too full to eat the main course. This is definitely important for me. The dip itself tasted really good - it was hot and seasoned very well. I honestly could have that for breakfast daily! The Venison meatloaf was tender and cooked surrounded in bacon. It came with a side of greens and macaroni and cheese - definitely a southern inspired comfort meal. The greens had a good flavor, the pasta was al dente and cheesy, and the star of the meal (the Venison) was juicy, flavorful, and wonderfully cooked. The spaghetti squash dish was lovely - the spices were perfect and the vegetables that were sauteed in with the squash were cooked perfectly - not too hard, not too soft. The white wine that they used in the dish complimented the root vegetables absolutely enhanced the wonderful flavor. I'll absolutely go back again! read more

On a whim, my friend and I made an impromptu trip to Richmond from Cville, and little did I know I would end up finding one of my fav restaurants in Virginia that would remind me of the modest yet gourmet places I love in my prior cities of residence in Chicago and Detroit. At around $50-60 total, we snagged two flights of local craft brews, a show-stopping appetizer, a refreshing yet filling salad and a ginormous/regionally based entrée to share among the two of us. This would not be possible at this price point in Charlottesville. Sunday Funday We took advantage of the fact that Happy Hour was still in session. (It's Tuesday through Sunday here.) I was floored when I saw the variety of local crafts on draft that I've never tried before. I went bananas for the Belgian sours and she opted for darker stouts and porters. My absolute fav was the Hardywood Blackberry Belgian White. (I am also a sucker for anything blackberry.) It had the right amount of tart and was not sugary sweet as most fruit-flavored beers are. My only issues with the drinks: The beer samples were presented in a cute manner via muffin tin, but none were labeled, and I'm positive that our server switched a couple while pointing out which was which because they tasted differently. There was also a sign that advertised $5 growlers, but that was totally misleading because that was just meant to represent the bottle, not the alcohol. For a second there, I thought I had actually found a cheaper craft beer growler than the deal I've gotten at Three Notch'd in Cville. (Go there for $12 bottle AND fill for the best beer in town.) Family-style Feast - for two My family and my in-laws each traditionally make large dinners on Sunday evenings, so this hearkened back to my Midwestern days with simple, yet hearty food. We had complimentary bread, the Empanadas for the appetizer, the Summer Salad and the Fried Chicken for an entrée. The bread was very unusual: berry and sun-dried tomato cornbread; herb and nut beer bread. I was surprised when the server put the plate on our table because I'm so used to boring, cold rolls. These were just a tease to... The empanadas: The best I've ever had. The dough was light and flaky like puff pastry. There was a ton of crabmeat and chorizo for the stuffing. And the spicy sauce just made it all come together. We each had one and ate them slowly because we didn't want the combo of flavors and textures to end. In fact, I was actually sad when I took the last bite. I couldn't be sad for too long as our salad was generous, even split up for the two of us. I'm a fan of creamy avocado, and with the combo of fresh sweet corn, bite of red onion and light cilantro dressing, it felt actually more Southwestern than just an average summer salad. Lastly, we managed to save room for our entrée: fried chicken stuffed with brie and mushroom with blueberry reduction sauce and two sides - sweet potato salad (subbed out traditional mashed potatoes) and green beans with goat cheese and Virginia ham. I wasn't completely in love with the chicken, as I would prefer a much crispier and thicker skin. The sauce may have also moistened the skin more so it would have been better on the side, and the brie almost seemed to rich and overwhelming with the chicken. I actually favored the sides even more than the main course, as normally straightforward string beans were richly flavored with the goat cheese and bits of ham. And the sweet potato salad had bits of bacon and other veggies mixed in without mayo, as I would expect with traditional potato salad. We really wished we had room and time for dessert. But we were stuffed, and the service took a bit longer than we had anticipated. We recognize the server was new, but the pacing was a bit too slow and we wished we had a little more attention. But I will definitely return because the menu is seasonal and I want to experience different dishes! read more

FIRST Dinner at 7.30pm on Friday night (soft opening) I would prefer to give 3.5, but have to round down due to slowness of food delivery. We were excited to hear that there was a new restaurant to check out, and that we were able to get a table on fairly short notice. This restaurant is 2 doors down from The Republic, where The Empress used to be. Upon arrival, we were greeted and quickly showed out seat. The atmosphere was great, with a good buzz of people, exposed brick walls, and cozy seating. The restaurant is fairly small, but not tiny and we didn't feel cramped at our two top. After ordering and receiving drinks, it took a few minutes for our waitress to come back for our food order. We ordered all of our food at once - a soup, an appetizer, a salad, an entree, and a few extra sides. Major complaint #1 It took a long time for our food to come out (both rounds). We were twiddling our thumbs for most of our time there. We had the carrot carrot puree soup and the grilled portabella appetizer to start. The soup was amazing, way better than I was expecting. The grilled portabella was also tasty. At this point we though to ourselves "ok, worth the wait." After another long wait, our grilled romaine salad, Cavatappi pasta with shrimp, and sides of mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts came out. The salad was on par with the soup and portabella. I love grilled greens, and this did not disappoint. However, the pasta dish was way too creamy and cheesy for out taste. The shrimp also tasted a little overcooked. The mashed potatoes tasted great, but also were too creamy. After one or two spoonfuls, you had your fill. The brussels sprouts came out barely warm, were way overcooked, and had very little flavor - I definitely would stay away from them. The bar had a lot of beers on tap (no liqour license yet - forthcoming), and the atmosphere was lively but not crazy. It was a little loud, so they should try to fix that. Outside of the wait a few subpar dishes, we enjoyed ourselves. We likely will go back once it has had a chance to establish itself, and give it another try. read more

Savory Grain in my favorite NEW restaurant in Richmond! I think we've been there 4 times since they opened last month and are really enjoying working our way through the menu. A standout is the calamari. It's prepared like no one else's.... It sound a bit odd but all the parts really work together... A wonderful tomato sauce with chorizo on the bottom, perfectly light and crispy fried calamari, topped with a fried egg and grilled jalapeno slices!! We've had salads, sandwiches and almost all of the appetizers, Don't leave with out house made ice cream! I had the mixed berry that was topped with a variety of fresh berries. We initially came for the 24 tap beer selection but come back for the food! read more

Sunday brunch had some tempting choices. Carrot cake pancakes with a cream cheese drizzle and crispy side of bacon, was sweet and a little desserty. The garbage pile doesn't sound appetizing but it's smothered potatoes, egg, bacon, cheese, and a spice stuffed jalapeño Even a tasty hamburger can be breakfast with a egg on top. Little surprising that they didn't have regular mustard, only honey mustard. They have a big selection of tempting cocktails and beers on tap, and bottles of wine. Yelp comes through once again. After taking a day trip from Charlottesville to Richmond, my friend and I stopped by here for dinner. While it wasn't the most perfect experience (slow service, waiting super long to take our order, got stuff after others who were seated after us, confusing signs at the bar) I'll definitely remember the food. You know when they go against the grain (couldn't resist) and serve their own cornbread with berries and sundried tomato and other beer bread with herbs and nuts (which were both different but excellent), that the place is unique. My friend and I split the following three things: The empanadas were on the suggestion of the waitress as we couldn't decide which app to get. Really thin, housemade pastry-like dough packed with crabmeat and chorizo with a lime cilantro chili aioli. I loved everything about it. The bread wasn't thick/heavy at all, the sauce added just a bit of kick and they didn't skimp out on the filling. The summertime salad was another light option that they were kind enough to divide onto two plates: corn, soft, ripe avocado, juicy cherry tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, feta and red onion and a bed of greens in a cilantro vinaigrette. Finally, the fried chicken entree stuffed with brie and a wild mushroom spread lightly fried and topped with a blueberry prosecco reduction. Not my favorite, although the blubbery sauce was pretty good. Just a little too much going on, and after having Southern fried chicken with its crispy skin, that's what I would've preferred. Two sides also came with it: potatoes (which we subbed for sweet potatoes without an up charge) and green beans with tiny bits of ham and goat cheese. If I could do it all over again, I would've gotten the crab crake or the risotto as the entree instead. Still, all very tasty, fresh and plenty full. read more

Came here for happy hour. Good ambiance, not too loud. Super friendly service, very attentive and helpful. Selection of beers and cocktails is nice. I had the Savory Burger which had a nice charbroiled taste to it. Added grilled onions which actually were ever slightly charred which I love since that's exactly how I like them. The ketchup felt fresh and not just out of a cheap bottle. The burger wasn't especially groundbreaking but it was hearty, tasty and well served. Great food, decent cocktails. This is a pretty cozy New American place in Richmond. It's open late and fairly busy at all times, though getting a table was not difficult. The crowd here did seem to be a bit older than I expected, perhaps because Savory Grain has live jazz on some nights. The food here was superb. I tried the Beer Brined Venison Chops, which were perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, and perfectly complemented with spinach and mushrooms. The cocktails, however, were a bit basic - the Hollywood and Appalachian I tried were decent, but really not terribly memorable. I'm somewhat picky with cocktails, so others might enjoy them a lot more than I did. read more

Came here the other night with friends for RVA burger week. Loved the environment, very cozy and cute. Perfect place to bring a group of people or just to go on a date. Our food came quickly, our waitress was kind and attentive. I ordered the bruschetta appetizer and it was delicious as well as satisfying, covered in goat cheese, and drizzled with a savory vinaigrette. Our bowl was filled with bruschetta toppings, which were the perfect blend of salt, citrus, and cilantro with a hint of sweetness. The best part was my burger which had the most delicious warm toasty bread on top that melted in your mouth. The baby arugula underneath gave the burger the perfect amount of balance with the meat to bread ratio, and the melted cheese on top was to die for. Best of all, instead of choosing fries as a side, I choose mac n cheese. The mac and cheese was soft, creamy, and supple coated on delicious shells. The taste didn't overpower you, or fight you it was just right as well as satisfying enough to make you put your fork down and save it for later. Yep, it was that good. The food was so delicious that I decided to savor the rest the next day, and I do not regret it. Great place, great food, great atmosphere, and great service. Will definitely come again. read more

Wow, Wednesday night was by far the best night for me at The Savory Grain. $4 drafts until 9 pm and dollar oysters! Their draft list has variety and is respectable by craft beer drinkers. You can't beat $4 for Petrus Pale Ale. The oysters were fresh and flavorful. Probably the best I have had so far in RVA. Started off with an awesome beer bread with Vienna lager and blueberries. For my entree, I enjoyed the shrimp and grits with chorizo. A good dish but the portion size was rather small for $20. Yes, I understand it was shrimp and grits, but I like a hearty serving of grits which I don't believe is too much to ask. My date enjoyed the meatloaf with succotash and macaroni and cheese. A well put together meal. The atmosphere was very cozy and our waitress, Stephanie, was great. We really enjoyed our time at The Savory Grain and I will for sure go back. read more

Went on a weekday night- no reservation. Only had to wait for 40 minutes. We weren't starving, so we waited. We were seated right on time. The bar was packed and made standing room hard to come by, but the staff was friendly and didn't seem to mind us being in their way. Food was excellent. Love places with raw oysters! I was disappointed when the menu special I had been eying all night was erased just as we sat down... oh well, opted for the steak. yum! Leftovers reheated well too. Would return. I was at the Savory Grain for my sister's birthday a few days ago and this restaurant is pretty great. I've actually been here a couple times before and was super wow'ed. A girlfriend and I showed up really early for the dinner so we grabbed two seats at the bar and ordered a couple of drinks. Their happy hour board is slightly confusing we weren't sure if there were any HH specials for the day (Thursday) of it was just select days. I believe they're everyday but I'd ask first! We ordered a few appetizers to begin with: crab and artichoke dip, pimento cheese, and calamari. The calamari was chocked full of bold flavors, the pimento cheese was just heavenly, and the crab and artichoke dip was great as well. For entrees, I ordered the savory pie which was the perfect choice since temps were dropping in Richmond. It was the perfect dish to warm and fill me up! The portion was rather large so I ended up taking half of it home with me. Our server was great! She was extremely attentive, able to handle a table of 6 women, and gave great suggestions. read more

My husband was looking for brunch spots we could hit up today... while we've been to Th Savory Grain for dinner we've never been there for brunch so we figured why not. This must be a semi decent place for kids because we saw quite a few children when we walked into the restaurant. We sat on the right side where there was a bench built on the wall. My daughter is almost 2 1/2 so she was able to sit on the bench side with me and eat her brunch. We ordered her a milk which came in a plastic cup and straw and some Sweet Cream Pancakes (two medium sized pancakes , honestly good size I'm thinking the size would fill me up... they topped it with some butter and a strawberry). My husband ordered a Bloody Mary (he's not a pickle fan so he asked for no pickle, he said the Bloody mary was super spicy and tasty... I took a mini sip too, and it made me start counting down the days till I deliver our second little one. It also has capers in it, so if you don't like capers you may want to ask for it without) and a coffee. For his meal, he selected the Krispy Kreme French Toast (it comes with 4 slices, apparently the donuts are dipped in Homestead Creamery ice cream... if you have ever had Homestead Creamery ice cream you could imagine the creamy taste if added for the donuts. It also came with 2 patties Edwards of Surry Sausage, so tasty, I could've eaten a couple patties myself), and I selected the Chicken & Waffles (The chicken was fried perfectly, super crispy... but I will be honest I was not too big of a fan of what the chicken breast was stuffed with, apples, bacon and Gorgonzola. I personally think the chicken would've been 10 times better without the stuffing as the stuffing just add some odd flavors and the texture was off... it reminds me of this chicken dish I had 10+years ago stuffed with prunes, apricots, nuts and goat cheese... love all those things but as a stuffing no thank you :) The Waffle was really crisp and the Bourbon infused maple syrup and honey butter added a perfect amount of sweetness... though I wish I could taste more of the Bourbon.) Regardless, it didn't really stop me from eating all my Chicken & Waffles as I am eating for two and I was hungry! The last time we were here for dinner I had the rabbit special which I remember being really tasty and my husband had the special chicken pot pie which he also enjoyed. Honestly hands down the best place I have gotten a meal in a while. Truly an awesome surprising experience! Me and my boyfriend stopped in to grab a late night dinner and we're greeted by this very nice and helpful waitress Sarah. She helped us choose our meals and pair then with the prefect beer/cocktails. My cocktail was amazing and their cocktail list can give any NYC craft cocktail bar a run for their money. The place even surprised us with Jazz music which was the cherry on top of this great evening! The band was awesome! The place reminded me of a non pretentious NYC restaurant with manners and amazing hospitality! This place was on my list of places to try for a long time. Glad that I did. Went Sunday night for dinner and it was surprisingly busy. It's also half price wine bottle night if that's your thing. I ordered a glass on white wine which was really tasty and decided on some chicken soup with dumplings and a grilled apple salad. The soup was very flavorful and pretty filling! I've been for dinner a few times and the food is not consistent. The food is good but the same dish can be a different quality on different days. I recommend the Brussel sprouts - once they were cooked perfectly and the next time they were burnt. The spaghetti squash is just okay. I absolutely want to go back to try more of the entrees. And I want to go for brunch for the jazz! The atmosphere is nice! I usually sit at or around the bar - but I want to try the other room that has more of a dining set-up. 5 star brunch food! Got the classic chicken & waffles and was not disappointed. In fact, these may be some of the best I've had in Richmond. The waffle is a standard Belgian waffle that comes with a bourbon infused maple syrup and honey butter. The bourbon isn't very strong but the honey butter is incredible and probably very bad for my arteries. The chicken was a fried chicken breast that was surprisingly not dry and stuffed with this heavenly mixture of cheese. Supposedly, there should have been bacon in this stuffing but I couldn't really taste it. Portion size was great; I ate all of it and was very happy. There is lovely live jazz music on the weekends! The place is super busy during brunch so service was very slow. Come here earlier rather than later! read more

I wanted to love this love the Savory Grain but I just like it so far. The space is open and nice and has a nice patio. We came on a Friday and it looks like it is hard to get a seat inside without reservations. Still a few seats outside. The steak I had was not the medium rare I wanted (over cooked) and just didn't have a lot of flavor. The mashed potatoes were my favorite part of the dish. BF's pork chop was better and had pretty good flavor along with the mac and cheese. For the price the portions were good but I wish the flavor was a bit better. We had jalapenos wrapped in bacon which was good. Service was great. Good spot and service. Given the great reviews, I wish the food was a little better. More of a 3.5. read more

I have enjoyed several excellent meals at Savory Grain over the years, so I was thrilled to get a reservation for Valentines Day. The reservation did not disclose that they were only offering a set 4 course menu, nor did it disclose the $100 pp price ex-alcohol. When we arrived, the menu also did not disclose the price. Several other diners near us left once they figured this out. We decided to stay, and the food was OK but not great. And to make matters worse, we felt rushed the entire time. So we had an overpriced so-so 4 course meal that was rushed. The Savory Grain is better than this. I hope this review helps them learn this lesson. Broad Street itself is not exactly the most attractive spot in the world, so stepping from it to the inside of the Savory Grain is like day and night! Chic and classy, with great food, great table set up, and a live duet playing in the corner while we ate brunch! My only critique is wishing they had kept their menu more up to date. I had seen pumpkin pancakes as an option online, only to walk in so excited to try them and realizing they were a seasonal dish, with blueberry pancakes in their place. My Benedict meal certainly made up for it, but I am now very much looking forward to going back in the fall. read more

The ambiance was calming and the food was plentiful and delicious. The area may have a whole food moving in soon and a bus stop has been newly built across the street. My husband had the chicken on waffle and I had a dish named Trash which felt funny to order and I believe no food should be called Trash(which Hindus consider very insulting as food is something that nourishes our bodies) so it was very uncomfortable for me to order that. Our friends had the crab cake over kale with capers which looked delicious and I will order that next time we go there. read more

Great food. Good service. Was the bar short on liquid tonight? I like to acknowledge good mixed drinks when I can... the proportions must have been well balanced. But to be honest, I also like a drink because I'm a thirsty dude. I got the $9 marghareta &was surprised to see it barely more than half full and ice reaching near the top of the glass. It looked like 4oz of liquid. $9 gone in three sips. My mother in law complained hers was too small as well & got it made in a pint glass for the same price. Cheap on drinks & we noticed.
