Food is good, menu changes enough to keep things interesting, and they pour a mean cocktail, but the service is really inconsistent. This past visit, we ordered drinks and apps, and over 20 minutes later the server STILL hadn't taken our order. We had to ask the hostess who wandered by to get her so we could order our entrees. She brought 6 corn muffins for our table of 7. I never actually got the drink I ordered, but wasn't charged. Food came out at very different times. The complex entrees came out and about 10 minutes later the sandwiches the rest of us ordered came out. A friend requested no mayo on her sandwich, but it was delivered to the table with mayo by a runner. Took over 5 minutes to find the server again to let her know. Then another 10 minutes to remake my friend's simple caprese sandwich. I also ordered the caprese. It was tasty, but it was mostly bread. I expect a nice slab of fresh mozzarella on a caprese sandwich, and this one had a nice thick slice of tomato and a deli thin slice of cheese. I wouldn't order it again. Everyone else was happy with their meals. However for our 6pm reservation for 7, and a server with only two other tables (a 4 top and a 2 top in the time we were there), it took us about 90 minutes for our meal, and that was only because we asked for checks when our food arrived after being there for about an hour. Great little place! We had the Fried Green Tomatoes and stuffed jalapeños as starters, and both were excellent! We had a special for dinner that outstanding too! Went there for my boyfriends birthday with his girls. It was soooo good. We ordered two or three appetizers and each one was better than the last. I have to say the grilled cheese bites were the best thing I have ever tried. Everyone's meal from the Rib-eye to a hamburger was delicious. I seriously dream about this place. I love Savory Grain. Definitely a well-loved place, but I feel like it's a bit of a hidden gem in Richmond. The interior has a very cozy and classic decor, perfect for a date night, even though I usually come here to go on a date with their mac and cheese. Seriously, the stuff is life changing. So is the meatloaf it comes with. In fact, I've never had a bad meal at Savory Grain. Their chicken and dumpling soup is unbelievable as well. The menu is jam packed with Southern favorites, so bring a big appetite when you come here. Oh, and don't forget to order one of their amazing cocktails. Love the food, drinks and staff here. Always friendly and welcoming, smiles on the hostess and bartenders faces. Happy hour drinks you can't go wrong with: the house red is always a decent cab, sparkling a cava or prosecco. The draft selection is extensive and even at off hours prices are fair. BBQ and bourbon Tuesday's are what draws me in. Plates are always a good size, flavors are big. Their flatbreads are always a solid choice for an app as is their pimiento cheese with toast points. read more

We went to the Savory Grain last night for the third time and it has not disappointed yet! Service has always been friendly and attentive. The menu has really great options, some unique and some old favorites. And the atmosphere is great ... PLUS - Happy Hour! Last night we tried the crab dip and calamari. The calamari was served with an egg on top, and a spicy red tomato sauce at the bottom of the bowl (I am sure there is a more technical term), which was delicious! My husband and I both had the burger which was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. We added sides of the Honey Glazed Brussels Sprouts and the Artichoke and Leek Au Gratin which were both phenomenal. Our friends had the spinach salad and gnocchi which they raved about as well. They have wine on a tap, a great beer selection, and a long list of specialty cocktails. This place has quickly become a favorite and we will be back! read more

We came to The Savory Grain with a group of 8 for New Years Eve dinner. The manager was very accomodating when I called and gave us their back room for the meal. Although it is a separate room it is not extremely private, but they do have a curtain you can close. We did this as our group got louder through the night! We had a pre fixe menu with 4 courses and champagne. Everyone was very happy with the meal and all said they would come again. For the first course most people got either a mushroom duxelle, crab and artichoke dip, or wings. The wings were the least exciting of the three and some felt they weren't cooked as much as they would like. For the second course people got salads or soup. My soup was a red pepper bisque with crab and it was great, the portion was a little small but with the other 3 courses I certainly wasn't hungry. If I had ordered that off the regular menu, however, I would have been disappointed in the portion size. For the main course we had an assortment of filet mignon, shrimp and grits, and roasted chicken. All loved their entrees! For dessert we had chocolate cake and cheesecake, with one person selecting the fruit tart. Although nothing was to die for it all hit the spot for dessert after a savory meal. I would return here because of the great service we received as well as the tasty food and reasonable prices. read more

To start, I would probably rate this restaurant higher if there were more options on there menu. There were only two options that stuck out to me on the menu. I'm not a soup fan or salad fan so my choices were limited. I liked what I got and got to taste a few other dishes that were pretty good. Came hungry and ready for a great burger during burger week. We had just done an intense chest and arms workout and were ready to go in on a burger. We got seated right away despite the place being quite busy. We decided to get the burger plus an order of fries. The burger was cooked to perfection. The only reason I am docking some points is because I feel like the flavor was lacking a little bit still a great burger. The fries were fresh cut and delicious. My friend got the chicken curry soup because he was feeling healthy and I was able to try it and can say it was very well made and had the best flavors I've had in a while from a soup. They have 5 dollar burger nights on Tuesdays so might have to come back and enjoy this burger again. The burger is normally 12 dollars but during burger week it's 5 dollars and on Tuesdays it's the same price. read more

Great atmosphere and food was a delight! The stuffed jalapenos and the fried quail were quite tasty. The former had a perfect blend of cheese and spiciness while the latter was fried with just the right tenderness of the meat. I'm not really a fan of grits, but the ones that came with the quail made me rethink grits. Would definitely go back. read more

Stopped by on the way back to NC. Was everything I could ask for in a locally owned restaurant. Pleasant and professional staff, well decorated interior and spacious bathrooms, reasonably priced for what we got. My wife had the crab cake Benedict and I had the brisket scramble. We thoroughly enjoyed each of our dishes and made ourselves uncomfortable trying to eat everything on the plate. Will definitely stop by again if in Richmond. read more

The cocktails were delicious, service was a solid C minus. Our server was pleasant enough but took a small eternity to get us our drinks and we had to beg for bread. If the food had been amazing, I probably would have turned a blind eye to this like I do with the poor service at other places. If you order the grilled watermelon salad, prepare yourself for a viking feast of 3 lukewarm watermelon slices atop a bed of 8 arugula leaves. Never fear, for there is a McDonald's on my way home, so I did not starve. My husband really liked his meatloaf, so I would be willing to give this place a second try but with so many other options in the city it's probably not happening any time soon. Really enjoyed the food, but this was a stressful and uncomfortable experience. We were a party of 5 on a busy Saturday night, with reservations. (NOTE: reservations highly recommended, otherwise a 45+ minute wait). It's a loud, cramped space with very little room between the people at the bar and the people seated at tables. We were 5 people crammed at a table that would have been tight for 4. The chairs were very uncomfortable to sit in--I'm a fairly slim guy, and I felt squeezed; I cannot imagine how embarrassingly awkward it would be for an overweight person to perch in one of those stubby little armchairs. The tabletop itself was chock full of stuff: excessively large bread plates were particularly pointless considering that the delicious cornbread was served in bite-sized pieces, one per person; side dishes came on side plates, even though there was room for them on the main plate; every drink came with a paper cocktail napkin under it. The savory pie was an excellent, rustic upgrade of a shepherd's pie. My father loved the meatloaf and macaroni & cheese. The chickpea/leek burger was AWESOME. The Brussels sprouts (the honey-garlic side dish, rather than the fried appetizer) were flavorful but frankly overcooked to a dull & mushy olive green: Texture & visual were 2 out of 5, but taste was 5 of 5. I ordered coffee, which was lukewarm and very weak/thin. There were several interesting-sounding entrees and sides that I'd be interested in trying another time. The menu is seasonal, which leaves room for real creativity as local produce changes. The desserts sounded lovely, and I really wanted to try one, but the others felt full and I was kind of relieved that we could leave. I would be willing to go back on a weeknight, when it might be quieter and less crowded, but never again on the weekend. Went here Saturday night for my birthday dinner with friends. I reserved the table and it was ready before we even walked in. Our waitress was awesome and even split the checks without asking [always a plus!] They had prosecco on tap and I'm a huge prosecco fan. The appetizers were insanely good. We got the beer cheese dip with sausage and bacon wrapped jalepenos. Everyone at the table went on and on about how delicious their dinners were and I absolutely agree. They also brought out dessert with a candle in it. Really sweet :) This is my third or fourth time here and I've never been disappointed. I think this is one of my top 5 favorite restaurants in the city. You just can't beat the amazing staff, drink menu, and local dinner items. I've been here for dinner a few times in the past and it was always ALWAYS absolutely delicious so I won't let the star rating factor too much into my latest experience. Went on a Friday night with a friend, place was jumpin, lively atmosphere, short wait for a table. Ordered the pumpkin-beer-cheese dip to start (yea, sounded a little odd but wanted to try something new). Tasted like a pie filling or pumpkin custard, overly sweet with no discernible cheese or beer flavors. Disappointing but we thought maybe it just wasn't for us. Then our salads came and they were undersized (compared to previous visits), very little detectable vinaigrette and with some elements (pear slices, onions) that seemed past their prime. I don't know if they've had a recent change in kitchen staff or what the issue was but I hope it was just an off night. read more

Lunch for 7...6 adults and one child. Two of us had the fish & chips, one had the cheeseburger, one the chicken salad, another the Green fried BLT sandwich. I was told it was really good. My wife had two appetizers. A small salad and the onion rings were tasty...I got to try one. Outcome, my fish and chips were terrific. I also ordered a side of the Mac&Cheese...quite good. They use a white cheese. As always excellent service. We were not rushed and had an enjoyable lunch. The fish was outstanding and I had a slice of cheddar cheese added. This place is so great! I've been twice so far and tried the kale salad, the rock fish, zucchini fries, and prawns with pear salsa. I also tasted the NY strip and the catfish. Everything was amazing. The kale salad is definitely going to be a staple for me. The staff is super nice and welcoming. They have a robust drink menu too. This restaurant was extremely disappointing- the service was slow, the cornbread they gave us (since they were out of bread) was salty and dry, the mashed potatoes/cauliflower tasted so bad it couldn't be eaten. Great new spot! Great atmosphere and vibe. We went on a Friday night, and the place was busy with dinner and happy hour. Bar service was quick, and has over 20 craft beers on tap. While there were some local flavors, there was also a wide selection of brews I had not heard of or tried. Its not all IPA either, which I liked since im not much of a hoppy beer fan. Service was excellent. We ordered a second round of drinks, and the deep fried grilled cheese which was well worth the calories. Appetizer was a little slow to show, but the entrees were quick to follow. I had the roast chicken, with cheese and bacon mashed potatoes. Chicken was moist and flavorful, but the real deal was the cheese and bacon mashed potatoes which are fantastic. My wife got the grilled Rockfish, which she enjoyed as well. Apple pear cobbler with home made ice cream for desert, also very good. The fruit was not mushy which I liked, and while it was well spiced, the fruit flavors still stood out. I am glad we did, the beer selection was phenomenal and the menu unique (in a very good way). I had the Wild Boar, the seasoning was excellent and the sides were paired perfectly. The food was good but the service was honestly so bad we will not be coming back. I made a reservation for 6:45, when we arrived they sat us at the bar, I then clarified that I would like to be sat at a table so we then had to wait at least 30 minutes until we were finally sat at a table and able to order our food. It was very frustrating to make a reservation to just wait for a table- making the reservation totally useless. Once we were at the table we ordered our food immediately (we had the menu to look over at the bar for the last half hour so we knew what we wanted). The waiter took our order and did not come back to the table for an entire hour. I am not exaggerating, it was literally an hour before he came back and apologized for the wait for our food- no refills on drinks or anything before that. It was not extraordinary busy at that point either. It was still another 15 minutes before our food arrived. From time of arrival to time of check we were there from 6:45-9:00pm. read more

We have been several times with friends and have tasted most of the menu, and we never do that however there is so much worth trying that we keep testing food. Food was okay but service was bad. We made a reservation and they tried to seat us at the bar. Nope - that's why we made a reservation. Wait was very slow for food and drinks and when they arrived we had no silverware on the table and they asked if we wanted silverware. Should we eat it with our hands? My second glass of wine arrived after I had almost eaten the entree. We stayed so long we had nothing to drink on the table including water. I almost fell asleep. Went here with my husband and my dad for my birthday. My dad usually sticks to chain restaurants and orders chicken parm everywhere... he may be giving that up after our experience here because it was divine!! He loved it, we all did!! We had the pierogi appetizer, and that's probably the only negative part. They were good but needed a little more taste. To be honest, they could have been horrible and it wouldn't have mattered because the rest of the meal was one if the best I have had in RVA. I had the scallops and they were probably some if the best I've ever eaten. My dad had told the woman who sat us (pretty sure sge was the manager) that it was my birthday and when my entree came out it had a flower on it. I loved that little extra detail. The pecan pie for dessert was out of this world and all desserts are served with ice cream which I feel like they make themselves. It was SO good!!!
