    Pot pie
    Kate K.

I go here for the pot pie, it is fantastic - 5 stars. We have also tried their chicken sandwich, burgers, and pimento cheese appetizer. The servers are always friendly. Parking is my only issue given that I cant parallel park without embarrassing myself. Get the pot pie!!

Pimento Cheese with Crostinis (soft and crispy)

This was a recommendation from my barber/stylist, Danny Smith (Nirvana Hair Studio) who had a shop nearby a while ago. He said that he thought I would enjoy it, and he was right. We arrived around 5:00 or 6:00 in the evening. We didn't have a reservation on a Saturday (surprise, surprise), but there were open seats on the patio and at the bar. We chose the patio, and while patio chairs left something to be desired (some bolts need to be tightened or the chairs replaced, one), it was a pleasant night. Our server came out promptly. She was prepared, knew the specials, and was able to answer any questions we had. We ordered the pimento cheese and crostini for an appetizer. For dinner I ordered the signature burger with the sauteed broccolini as a side, and my partner chose the chicken pot pie. The chicken pot pie came out hot and smelled incredible. The signature Burger was medium, exactly as I ordered it. It was Juicy, tender, and tasted fantastic with its classic potato bun. The desserts sounded fantastic, especially the "fudgy tiramisu" as our server described it, but we were too full to try them. The GM came by our table to personally introduce themselves and ensure that our experience was excellent. I always respect that level of service and integrity. I feel remiss that I neglected to mention the patio chairs. Swing and a miss. The traffic noise on the patio can be somewhat grating, and we were approached by a panhandler/down on their luck individual as we were wrapping up the check. The Savory Grain had kind staff, wondrous food, a delicious sour ale, and even a clean restroom. I absolutely recommend it and plan to return again.

Savory Side Plate: Honeynut Squash, Mac and Cheese, Honey Garlic Brussel Sprouts, Cornbread with Honey Butter
    Connie T.

I admit that it's possible I ordered wrong and if I ever go back, I would try something else. The service was great but the food was quite underwhelming. I often have trouble deciding what to order and I love side dishes so I was intrigued by the savory side plate entree. You have a choice of 3 sides, which is paired with cornbread topped with honey butter. It's a nice option to try multiple things. The best side was the mac and cheese. The cornbread was more dense than I'd like but the honey butter was delicious. The brussel sprouts lacked flavor and seasoning. The honeynut squash wasn't what I expected and I would've preferred the balsamic glaze over the brussels instead.

    Quiche with salad

Another brunch outing with one of my girlfriends and we had a fabulous time! My girlfriend ordered the quiche and it was served with a spring mix salad. The quiche was tasty and the salad was fresh. I ordered the salmon breakfast plate. The salmon was delicious. It was grilled and seasoned to perfection, served with a cream-caper sauce. It was served with fried potatoes, 2 scrambled eggs with cheese along with a Belgian waffle with fresh fruit. My friend ordered the bread pudding and it was delicious but not better than mine!

I loved the Savory Grain! I won't take it for grain-ted! The decor is dark, warm, and intriguing. We sat at a small table by the window and enjoyed seeing the busy Broad Street hustle and bustle. The food was amazing, incredible sandwiches and perfectly seasoned French fries. The menu is so diverse and well planned. Our service was impeccable, and we enjoyed lunching at this cool spot! I loved the small "pint" glasses we were served with that I asked if I could purchase some, and to my delight, the manager allowed me to buy two! I use them at home all the time and I love seeing the logo on the glasses to remind me of our lovely experience! We are definitely going back to explore more menu options !

Savory Grain dining area. So cozy & intimate

This was my first visit to Savory Grain. My husband took me to dinner there to celebrate my birthday. I really enjoyed every experience I had while dining at the restaurant, from the food to the decor to the service, every aspect of our time there was wonderful. I would definitely return to this restaurant again in the future. The decor was very festive. The service attentive & helpful. The food was melt in your mouth delicious. Savory Grain is definitely a restaurant I would recommend if you are looking for a small, intimate & cozy Saturday afternoon dining venue.

Sunday brunch here is awesome. Live jazz, great service. I ordered the Savory breakfast plate with scrambled eggs and bacon. My waffle was delicious. My partner got the SG Benny -- eggs Benedict. He loved it! Our favorite part was the live jazz music. It created such a cool vibe for an already cozy atmosphere. I highly recommend this place for brunch. Enjoy!

    Crab Cakes / Fries/ Mac & Cheese

Enjoyed dinner at Savory Grain. First appreciate the handicapped access with very convenient bathroom which is rare for older buildings. Staff was very attentive to my needs with use of a walker. Friendly wait staff. We parked on the street and didn't notice that there were parking spots on the side, until we left. That would be a good amenity to add on the web site - or with replies to reservations. We enjoyed the Brussels Sprouts appetizer for starters. Well cooked and we both loved the flavors of other components. There was a Loooooong wait for our entrees - which I didn't mind, except that the crowds and noise level increased while we waited. I had blackened salmon with dill sauce (not much dill) which was delicious and flakey while my husband had the crab cakes which had generous portions of lump crab meat, but my husband missed spice (old bay didn't really come through for him) and wanted more breading - (he's picky that way). Sides: zucchini and cornbread for me; fries and mac & cheese for him. The cornbread was notably Yankee cornbread - sweet, thick, cakey with a wonderful crust - but with my southern girl background, it was a difference- abet a delicious one. I was served zucchini when I ordered broccolini and was given zucchini as a substitute without checking with me first. I found it strange that at 6:30 reservation, the kitchen was already out of a staple on their menu. I was offered the chance to change the side if i wanted something else, but with the long wait, I was ready to eat. Zucchini was well cooked, but lacked any spice or citrus to make it shine. Husband appreciated hot fries and mac & cheese, but reported that it was nothing special - in both presentation (no crusty top or sprinkle of paprika to make it stand out) and taste (cheese was milder than expected). With the longer wait for our entrees came more dinner guests and the volume of conversation increased so that we couldn't really have a conversation without repeating ourselves and raising our voices. Savory Grain is overall a nice spot with decent food and an upbeat vibe. But I would caution anyone looking for a quiet, cozy setting to look elsewhere. I would revisit with a group with a more lively activity level. For this specific visit, three stars is all I can muster.

Scallops, steak, meatloaf, vegetarian options- something for most anyone. Lots of inducing side options- Mac n cheese, shoestring fries, broccolini, enticing salads like beats salad, wedge- the usual suspects. Very nice server and hostess. Steak was a lot more rare than my usual medium, broccoli slightly overcooked, my partners meatloaf was covered in spicey barbecue sauce with bacon wrap (bacon very under cooked). I'll definitely try again and go for a seafood option like the crabcakes or salad. My meal was just so-so. Not best fries in town. Good cocktails but on pricey side at $15 each. Again nice, but not a rockstar.

    Crab Cake Sandwich
    Sakinah P.

The food was very good we went for brunch at 11:20am and it wasn't too busy yet but it was steady and got crowded. The crab cake sandwich was the special and very tasty plenty of meat no filler. The waffle was a nice blend of fluff and crisp. The shrimp and grits had a delectable flavor I found the sauce a little thin for my liking but flavorful. The service was good but the wait for our food was slow especially since it wasn't busy when we arrived and ordered. They brought us biscuits as an apology 2 minutes before our food finally arrived after ordering it 35/40 mins before. The jazz was a nice touch and distraction.

Firstly let me say, the food here was fantastic!! The inside is cute. The music was great...There were just a few things during our brunch service that were a little less than ideal that made me give it 3 stars. Despite having a reservation we had to wait about 20 minutes for our table, and that was with me and my boyfriend running late to join our friends. We figured it was just a busy brunch so we let it slide. Secondly, it took a long time to get our food ordered and eventually delivered. There were many great specials and live music during brunch, and we had a lovely seat with cute decor, but this was a bit tough since we were already hungry and then met with more of a delay. I had wanted to order a latte but they didn't have an espresso machine, only drip, and I was fine with that, but they also didn't have any plant milk. Just cow milk, which as a lactose sensitive person, I just couldn't do it so I didn't order a coffee. That really bummed me since I figured at such a busy brunch spot in Richmond they would at least have almond or oat milk for coffee! That said, the food was incredible. Flaky buttery tasty biscuits. The salad was delicious, and I loved that there were so many quiche specials. We all left full and happy but the service was a bit lacking.

Great drinks! Great service! And great food! I went on a Thursday night which featured a live jazz band. I appreciated the host asking if we wanted to sit closer to the band or not. The drink menu is well rounded giving creative cocktails with a variety of alcohol. I'm a huge gin fan and was excited to have multiple options on the menu. All the appetizers sounded good but we went for the spinach and crab dip. It had a nice little kick without being too much. For dinner I got the chicken pot pie which was perfect for a cold day. My friend got the meatloaf which was the perfect comfort food. My next venture to Savory Grain will be during their weekend brunch.

    Shrimp & Grits
    Liz P.

The food was absolutely delicious. I got the shrimp & grits and cannot believe how incredible it tasted, and how much food it was! My fiancé got the scallops and it was unfortunately not enough food for him, but the shrimp and grits were so filling he was able to finish my plate! And we STILL had leftovers. Two happy hour wines, two appetizers (soup and salad), and two entrees ended up being $117 with a 20% tip. Overall, it was a great experience! I would go again for sure. The menu looked incredible and I had a hard time choosing.

Like too many restaurants in the Scott's Addition area, this is seafood cooked without finesse and then absolutely brutalized with absurd amounts of palate fatiguing, brash, loud flavors. Every item on the menu endeavors to conceal mediocrity in the quality and handling of the ingredients with explosive, overwhelming additives meant to shock you into submission. Things like black garlic and chili oil, raw garlic, sesame seed oil, and punishing heat are inescapable on the menu, which really says to me loud and clear "we do not understand the appeal of seafood, and might have a fundamental misunderstanding about good food in general." I don't exaggerate when I say these dishes would be improved (setting aside things like inability to properly cook octopus) by scaling back the flavors to 5-10% the loudness level they are currently at, to let the ingredients speak, and to make the dining experience less of a punishing marathon with no relief. I have had much subtler and more skillfully balanced dishes at Indian and Thai restaurants, cuisines known for strong flavor profiles. I'm through listening to these Richmond restaurants trying to excuse simply bad food by claiming "that's the nature of the cuisine." In this case, Lillian claims that dishes characterized by these cacophonous competing flavors is "South American." No it isn't - the person conceptualizing the dishes is just a bad chef who doesn't know what he's doing, and at the prices Lillian charges, that's inexcusable. Drowning every dish in flavors that overwhelm the palate is not a way to respect your ingredients or your diner, and only communicates youth and insecurity. Anyone who's eaten widely and knows their ingredients will rightly feel assaulted and insulted by this overpriced, unskilled fare. To anyone who decides to go anyway: Good luck with the digestive distress, and with the taste that will still be left over in your mouth the next morning, no matter how much you brush your teeth.
