I'm usually pretty good at fixing my own computer problems for myself and my friends and family, I've built my own systems from the ground up before. One time, and this is absolutely true, I kept an old dying system running for about a year with a twist tie, an old CPU fan from another system and propping the tower up at an angle. But I've also lost systems and irreplaceable data to catastrophic hardware failures in the past and I finally decided that this time, after replacing a power supply in my five-year-old system didn't take care of a repeated boot failure issue, that I was going to have to look for outside help for the first time even though I was really dreading it. I found The Service Department on Yelp and it had good reviews, and most importantly they were still open for about another half an hour and I was dangling from the frayed edges of my very last nerve. I called and I was prepared to have to defensively explain that I largely knew what I was talking about and what I had already tried to do to fix the problem. But Marcus was so, so patient and helpful both over the phone and in person. Even though I was there really late he did his level best to get my computer going again, and he gave me a lot of really good information about the best hardware peripherals - I try and keep up, but things change so quickly! He was able to diagnose right away that it was an overheating problem due to the liquid cooling heatsink bracket being bent and the pump being in the throes of death, and also discovered that somehow not just one but *both* of my hard drives, one only six months old, had been murdered by a system short as I was trying to get it going. A good repair person will fix your issue no matter the cost and time involved. A great repair person will tell you exactly what's wrong but be real with you about the issue being largely unfixable before you dump weeks of waiting on backorders and hundreds of dollars into a failing and aging system. I have a new computer on the way now, and the next time it starts making an ominous noise or bluescreening or randomly shutting down I'm going to be much quicker to take it back here, before part of it detonates and takes my data with it again. I have gone to these guys twice. And both times I was more than happy with the service. I am a poor graduate student but am dependent on my little netbook. The first time I came in, I brought in my less than 1 month old HP Netbook and it didn't even turn on. He diagnosed it within literally about 5 minutes and (I honestly forget details) but could tell that it was in an enclosed space turned on for too long (I thought it went to sleep in my bag, but it did stay on which caused my hard drive to overheat and fry). I was easily able to exchange it at the retail place and luckily didn't have any important documents on it. The guys at The Service Department talked to me about types of hard drives that can easily overheat and ones that withstand staying on...based on their expertise, I bought my now Toshiba netbook which works like a charm...until 8 months later it slowed down a lot. So today, I brought in my best friend, Toshiba, to them and asking if they can help me. I'm searching for jobs and can't afford this thing to shut down. They are amazingly fast, as soon as I come in, they are swamped with other jobs to work on, but take the time to help me with my problem. He right away noticed that chrome was running in the background, and he shut them down, then ran more diagnoses to see that my hard drive may have taken a slight fall or hit in my bag one too many times and it may be slowing down in the near future. He even provided a simple quick application to test how efficient the hard drive is doing since Windows only tells you when the hard drive is already fried. Not when it's about to fry. So based on these awesome guys, I'm going to backup my files and keep watch of my netbook. He also gave me a simple malware app to run once I am not working on it. He was so nice, explained exactly what was going on and how to fix it, and prevent it during both times, they say they didn't do any big work so they didn't charge me. Poor college students appreciate this! Next time I have a big issue, I'm coming back and I want to pay them since they saved me multiple times. I know a good amount of IT background, so I hesitate going to get my pc fixed. But sometimes I just want it fixed without spending hours trying to diagnose my issue. Go here even if you have 10 minutes and you're frustrated with your laptop or whatever device you have. These guys are efficient and cool to learn stuff about IT. Marcus at The Service Department has saved my butt twice now, and it's time to tell everyone about these guys. First time I went in, my laptop had locked up on a %$#@ MS upgrade. The Service Department was close by and open on Sunday, so that's where I went. Long story short, they diagnosed the problem, fixed it, got the upgrade installed, cleaned up my system (and the laptop itself) and had my baby back to me within 48 hours...all for around $30! No, that's not a typo. So, when my hard-drive crashed last week, I didn't even consider going anywhere else. Again - new hard-drive installed, all files transferred over, laptop prettied up...36 hours, flat $100. Not only this, but the guys are friendly, professional, and actually call their customers with updates! Finally...technical expertise AND great customer service skills as well! My son's computer could not find the network, so I brought it in to The Service Department, as my friend had mentioned that they do a great job. I walked in, and right away Marcus walked up to me and I explained my issue. He diagnosed it and fixed it within 10 minutes. A screw had come undone. I have not given a 5 star Yelp review before this one. Yesterday our old desktop computer would not turn on. I needed some tax information on it so I immediately looked at options for repair. "Hmm, The Service Department is very close and has nice Yelp reviews. I will start there." The website said they opened at 8 and I called shortly after 8 and spoke to a man named Paul. He was polite, listened to my issue and suggested I stop by and wait for a few minutes while they looked at our machine as it would not cost anything if I went that route. I stopped by and they began to look at my machine immediately, no wait. There were 3 guys working. Pretty quickly I was told our computer needed a new power supply. I have replaced power sources before and it isn't too hard. I told him I was going to do that and thanked them for helping me diagnose the problem (at no cost). Before putting my tower back together for me to take, the technician/owner told me he wanted to blow the dust out (at no cost). After they finished I asked them what they would charge to replace the power supply for me. 45 dollars. The parts alone would almost cost me that much. They said they would do it while I waited but I had some errands so stopped by 2 hours later. They replaced the power supply and booted the machine up to make sure it was working properly. In a nutshell, this is a place where the guys are nice, the prices are better than fair and they offer service that is very uncommon. I sincerely hope this business is successful. read more

These guys are great! We have had 3 different laptops in for them to work on and each time the problem is diagnosed, fixed and the computer cleaned up "technically" as well as aesthetically! They are fast, knowledgeable, and very good at talking with people of all levels of IT knowledge without making you feel stupid! Their hours are convenient and being open on both days of the weekend makes them lifesavers when everyone else is closed! Marcus has worked on all of the computers that we have taken in and it's been a great experience. Their prices are astounding - we have paid as little as $20, but no more than $40!!!! They're a little difficult to find the first time as they are on the back of an old building (which is really very conveniently located in town) in the basement, but they are WELL WORTH looking for!
