Our family was out in Cali on vacation/business and had a few hours and needed food. This establishment was found on Yelp and we decided to give it a go. In the parking lot a young man that had on a shirt that stated "the spoon " held the door open for us. As we entered the establishment, a very nice young lady with a pleasant personality, greeted us. I later found out that her name was Erica and she made our experience very pleasant. Erica's customer service style was on point. I tried the fried chicken wings with grits and the grilled corn bread! The grilled corn bread is to die for! If you don't try anything else give the grilled corn bread a try. The fried chicken batter is very delicious! My daughter had the FrenchToast, which I sampled and it too was very good! The egg batter of the French toast was very light and gave the bread a good fluffy texture. Oh and that maple syrup.....yum! I topped my breakfast off with a decaf coffee and that also was good . If you are looking to indulge for breakfast or a good hangover meal, this is your place! My friend and I were sat right away because there was room in the bar seating. I wouldn't recommend this because there just isn't enough space to put your purse anywhere, it is hard to get in and out of the seating and not enough space for all of your food. Our server was very friendly and quick. I ordered the chicken wings with grits and scrambled eggs. All very good and very filling. Probably not good for my health, however. I had the cornbread that came much later and it was super dry. It broke apart so fast when I was attempting to eat it. Not really the kind of cornbread I like. My friend and I shared a waffle with cinnamon on it. The flavor was good but I did not like the very thick texture of it. The food here is deserving of 5 stars it excellent, there is a reason there is a long wait. Although I do have to say i was supposed to be sent a would send me a text message to my phone once a table was available, I thought I would wander the neighborhood as the wait time was 1 hour 30 minutes. I never got a text and came back 1 hour 30 min later to ask about the wait, their mistake but they took me right away. The food and service was so god I was able to forget about the incident. I had heard good things about this restaurant. But I'm sorry to say my first experience at The Serving Spoon was not a good one. Ordered 2 breakfasts to go and got home expecting a bomb meal. Instead I found small portions with so so flavor. And, they didn't put the biscuits in neither breakfasts. I tried calling them to report their error but there was only a message saying you have to send them an email. So I sent them an email and so far have not heard from them. So my 88 year old grandmother during her final days was craving all types of down home southern soul food dishes and although her cancer would not let her eat but a few bites or spoonfuls I just wanted her to have what she desired. The only place I could think of was the serving spoon and everything I ordered from the liver to the salmon she loved it really made her smile which made me smile. So last weekend I think I ordered everything on the menu including the catfish nugget's. When the delivery was made I realized there were no nuggets and I ended up going up to the restaurant on my way to my grams. They were so pleasant regarding the mix up and refunded me for the nuggets. I had no idea that would be her last meal, I didn't even care that she only had a spoonful but she knew it was there and was delighted to taste. That was my last visit with my grandmother she was called home on 2/3 oddly that same day I was notified by my bank that the restaurant refunded my entire order! The Serving Spoon came up on Yelp with raving reviews, which persuaded my husband and I to check this place out. We came on a holiday Monday so there was a bit of a wait, probably about 30 minutes. The hostess gives you a menu to look at beforehand and if a counter seat opens up, she will give you the option to sit there or wait for a booth. We requested for a booth so we waited a little longer. By the time we were seated, my husband and I knew exactly what we wanted. So I will take about the food next. We ordered: Chicken Drummettes with mac and cheese and collard greens- the chicken came with 4 pieces, wasn't enough for me, but doable. It was well seasoned, though, I still ended up putting their red rooster hot sauce on it. The mac and cheese was great and collard greens were okay. Fried Catfish with grits and egg whites- my husband loved this dish. Also, I wanted to mention that I loved eating with the slow jams they put on! My son and I came in for the first time on a very busy Saturday morning, the wait was an hour and they asked if we'd Ins sitting at the bar. We said no problem whatsoever, this nice Woman asked us to hang on and she literally went to the bar where there were two open seats but not together and asked the patrons to move down a seat so that he and I could sit together. Our waiter came over took or orders and it just seemed the entire staff was super friendly even though the were swamped. The service was excellent!!!! Our food came quickly much faster than we expected especially considering how busy they were. Our food was hot and seasoned to perfection. As a business owner, I know how difficult it can be to get all of your staff well trained and on the same page and this place has figured it out. We most definitely will be back!! I wanted the oxtails but they don't start serving that until after 10am. So watch out for that. I then ordered the fried catfish, yams and greens with corn beard. I could do without the cornbread was a bit dry. Everything else was amazing !! Who need tartare sauce?! Not this person. The sides were finger licking good. My cousin got the chicken and waffle and order extra sides to go. The food didn't take that long to come out. I'm sure they cook the sides in batches and the main things as ordered.
