We got the lobster bake and a crispy chicken sandwich. The lobster was definitely fresh super good and same for the clams the clam chowder was pretty thin and could have had a bit more content but it was a good over all chowder. The chicken sandwich was pretty good and a great option for someone who isn't a big seafood fan, although the pasta salad as a side was not great little dressing and tasted like it may have been sitting out for a while. My friends and I traveled to OOB for Memorial Weekend and unfortunately our first day was very cold. So we were on the hunt for some warm clam chowder. I don't say this lightly but this is the worst restaurant I have ever been to in my entire life. Let me start off by saying that the host gave us a stack full of menus way more than there were people didn't even bother to count and shortly said your tables around the corner. We also ordered three apps only one came out as an appetizer so basically 5 of us sat there with nothing with 1 person having a half full cup of clam chowder. The food took about 55 minutes to arrive close to an hour, that's ridiculous The most important part of this is the food. I have never left a restaurant hungry, ever. There's always many options. We got the clam "belly's" and not only was there no belly (we got told by the waitress after we got them that the clams here have tiny belly's, that could have been useful to know before) they were completely over fried and didn't even taste like clams! Just little crisps, and a handful of them at that. We sent back our clams and got a fish and chips that was again, completely over fried the fish was hard, and smelled, definitely not fresh fish. My sister got a burger, can't mess that up right? Wrong. She never complains and even so, took one bite and said I can't eat that. We left HUNGRY. The last bit of info is that this place for the amount and quality of the food is the BIGGEST rip off I have ever encountered. Over $30 for clams "belly's" that didn't even taste like a clam? Much less clam belly's? $27 for old, over priced, over fried fish? The sad thing is EVEN the steamers were awful, how in the world can you mess up steamers?! Okay, so this place was... Ok. This was the first place we tried on our trip to Portland this past week and it happened to be on the beach in a very touristy area, which was probably our first mistake. Everything was priced a little higher than we found the rest of the trip. I understand we are paying for the great ocean views on the patio and the convenience of the area. The servers were really nice. The problem was, each of the foods we tried ended up being a little bit better elsewhere. The lobster roll was probably our favorite thing here, but the lobsters weren't quite as good as the other ones. We tried later on, and the biggest disappointment were the clams. They were extremely tough and gritty, obviously overcooked and not cleaned. Well. We decided that we definitely didn't like clams, but my husband who has had them before swore that these were just bad, so we tried a different restaurant the next day and they were much much better so I could definitely tell the difference. I liked the corn, did not care for the coleslaw. My husband's fries were pretty good. The clam chowder was okay. Definitely not terrible, but not a place I would recommend for someone wanting an authentic lobster meal experience while visiting this area. read more

Was in the area and decided to consult Yelp for last minute casual dinner near the beach. OOB was surprisingly light on tourists and lots of properties still aren't even open. So with a 4 star rating we went to The Shack. Now with a extra couple of months of good weather and downtime due to covid, as well as strict health and safety guidelines for reopening one would expect immaculate restaurants. The Shack was not close to immaculate. Beyond the peeling paint, dirt stained doors and graffiti riddled bathrooms among other things ....the health and safety guidelines were essentially nonexistent. My hair stylist has to wear a mask, glasses, face shield and gloves along with a smock. They had to install plexi glass between areas were there could be close contact or difficulty maintaining social distancing. All this to cut my hair while I am masked. There was no plexi glass at hostess stand or anywhere else. No hand sanitizer. One bathroom each for men/women. We sat at a table with a caddy containing ketchup bottle, salt and pepper as well as a glass with utensils in it!!!! And a stack of napkins. The staff were masked and they used every other table. These were the only guidelines followed. Wait staff did not clean menus between customers nor did they serve food with gloved hands. In additional we watched a table be cleared and "cleaned" after a party of 4 with kids left. She took the caddy and clipboard with pages of laminated drink menu and put them from a dirty table onto a clean table. Then she wiped the table and benches and put the unwiped caddy as well as the unwiped clipboard back onto the cleaned table. This is a gross practice even before covid!!! The cleaning cloth was reused over and over and sat hanging on the spray bottle when not in use. I will say after using our own hand sanitizer we enjoyed our crab cake app. Although service was seriously slow for the reduced volume. Our entrees were meh.... my husband felt his lobster in the lobster mac and cheese was over cooked. I asked for seared scallops with a little extra time on the searing (i like them quite carmelized) them came with no color on 5 of the 6 scallops. The accompaniments were satisfactory but nothing great.... grilled asparagus and a corn and zucchini hash. It was quite lack luster for the price. Each entree was $27. Our meal time was an hour and forty minutes. So while the food certainly wasn't the worst i have had.... in combination with the undeserving price point and what appears to be a complete disregard for their customers health and safety.... the shack will be a once and done dining option for me. read more

I'll start by saying we've visited The Shack multiple times in the past and have always had a great experiences but this past week while we were visiting OOB for the week we had the worst experience here. To start we showed up right around 430 and multiple tables had just sat down and we asked the wait for a party of 3 (Me , my husband & our 4 year old Daughter ). The hosted said to give her a minute to find out if their would be tables leaving soon in the back and returned to tell us the wait would be about 30min unless we sat at the high top seating(not ideal for our daughter) but because we have always loved eating here we agreed to sit. We looked at the menu & realized that my husbands favorite dish had been removed from the menu (lobster Mac and cheese) so I asked assuming it possibly could be made. Waitress stated they removed it due to product availability... which was an odd response since lobster is included in just about every dish on the menu and pasta isn't hard to come about these days... anyhow we decided he would chose something else and ordered a round of drinks. At that time about 10 min settling into our high top seats 2 different tables cleared out and we asked if we were able to sit at one of them. The waitress told us unfortunately those tables were only available for larger parties ...extremely disappointing since we did have a child and she knew it wasn't ideal for our situation to sit where we were and requested a picnic table to start. Also the tables weren't reserved and no one was outside waiting for a table so it's not right they wouldn't allow us to sit comfortably with a child. Our waitress then returned to apologize saying they unfortunately didn't have any Heineken which is what my husband ordered. After that , we decided it was best to leave as we were extremely upset with the seating situation and how that was handled and the fact that they didn't have multiple things we tried to order. I understand times our rough , but had they moved us to a table maybe we would have overlooked the lack of product but felt they weren't accommodating. Disappointed is an understatement and have always had a good experience here. Management should take notice. Leaving multiple tables opened for possible future guests while current guests are sitting uncomfortably is unacceptable and very unfair! read more

As someone who has been coming to Old Orchard Beach their whole life, it was a surprise to see a new restaurant open up by the shore. Not only is the view amazing from the top deck dining area, the service is friendly and quick and the food is DELICIOUS! Good lobster is always expected when visiting Maine, and The Shack delivered! Came here three times in three days during my summer vacation this past July and the lobster roll was just as amazing each time! The cocktails were fresh and fruity (I may enjoyed quite a few pina coladas before happy hour) while my boyfriend enjoyed the cold craft beer from local breweries. The hot buttered lobster roll was full of tender lobster with just the right amount of butter. The roll was toasted to perfection! The other 2 people I was with got the steak and cheese- both said it was really good! Their fries are thick, crispy, and delicious- I recommend paying the extra $3 to get them as opposed to the chips that most sandwiches come with. I asked for the spicy mayo to dip my fries in and the waitress brought it to me without hesitation. I recommend asking for it too! This restaurant was amazing! We were seated on the back porch that overlooked the boardwalk amusement park. We tried the Thai chili wings, the fish tacos, the poutine, and the crab cakes. The crab cakes were INCREDIBLE. The aioli that came on it was delicious, and I loved the pairing with the arugula. The wings had a perfectly balanced sauce that was sweet and savory. Despite the heavy amount of sauce, the wings remained crispy! The haddock in the taco was cooked to perfection. The pico de gallo was a nice accent to the taco. While I wasn't a fan of the poutine (simply because I don't like poutine), my family enjoyed it. Definitely would return! read more

I came here starving after a very long drive up from Philly. I ordered a lobster roll and a beer. The lobster roll was phenomenal. It was full with tons of meat and it tasted fresh. We started with a cup of chowder it was ok at best and to thin for our liking then the meals came out I ordered a combo plate as stated on the menu whole clams and haddock. First the clams were strips not whole and about six on the plate the haddock took all of three bites to finish. The wife ordered scallops fried and I have to say I never saw scallops cut in half before not even a quarter of a inch thick if supplies were low just stop serving them or is this the shacks normal practice.needless to say we won't be back . We were staying in OOB for the weekend, in Maine for the first time. We didn't realize how quiet OOB gets once the warm weather leaves. We arrived in town somewhat late and found several of the restaurants closed already. We were happy to see that The Shack was open until 10:00. The service was great!
