I would have given them 3 stars but unfortunately we just happened to pick the wrong day to try this place for the first time. I read the reviews ahead of time and decided we had to try it. After our experience I have to disagree, it is definitely NOT the best brunch spot in Albuquerque. I won't name names but there are at least a half dozen restaurants within 2 miles that are exceptionally better. The food was good enough and the service was okay. I ordered the huevos rancheros, and later settled for the french toast. It was noon and they were out of just about everything. Had we not already paid before finding out we wouldn't be receiving what we ordered, we would have gone elsewhere. The real kicker was that after being told I'd have to pick another menu item, my only options all cost less than what we had already paid. I would have expected them to offer something for their mistake. The french toast was fine, nothing special and definitely not enough for a fulfilling breakfast. My other half settled for the Kentucky brown because they were also out of his first choice. They had to substitute his bacon. We were both still hungry when we left. Been here twice. Had the shrimp and grits - great - once and the duck confit sandwich the other time. Both were excellent and plenty to eat. This is probably the best sandwich place in ABQ now. My wife had the Qbano which she loved. The yellow mustard on it isn't my favorite but guess that's traditional on Cubanos so .... For those who complain about the cost of the chilaquiles, they usually don't come with steak, they normally come with shredded chicken or just an egg. Steak adds to the cost and, believe it or don't, if a restaurant doesn't recover its costs by pricing properly, it'll go out of business. You can't really make up your losses on volume. I personally wouldn't care for steak with chiliquiles so wouldn't order it (and because it's too expensive). I'd much rather have it with chicken than accompanied by steak. If you think it's too expensive, just don't order it; no need to carp about it on Yelp. And yes, they're trying to do something different here, which is good. Don't complain about places being different. Who wants the same old crap rehashed? At least they don't automatically load everything up with red or green chile like just about every other breakfast place in New Mexico. My wife had the bacon mac once and it was great and lots of it. Most of the mac and cheese we've had in ABQ has been nearly inedible but excellent here. This place deserves to be much busier that it was when we were there but we've gone pretty close to their 3 p.m. closing time. read more

The boys at The Shop aren't afraid to let the grits just be delicious on their own, not smothered in cheese (which I like too!). The shrimp were wonderful and the bacon lardons and egg were perfect. A plain old buttermilk waffle is fantastic, with plenty of butter and real maple syrup. But the crowning jewel is the chicken and waffle. I am a big fan of restaurants celebrating the bounty of NM produce and meats. Over the past several years, we have witnessed a revival of spaces that celebrate local ingredients, and local art. The Shop is also committed to this spirit, which by itself earns it a star or two in my book. So then why only a 3-star overall review? Well, two reasons. First, I found the service to be somewhat cold and impersonal- not really a 'Burque thing usually! While everything was perfectly efficient, it was completely devoid of any warmth. Second, the food. Good food can mitigate a lot of other flaws- including poor customer service. However, the food here was mediocre at best. I had the falafel. The best part of the dish was the side salad. The greens were clearly fresh, local, and delicious. However, the falafel itself was quite dry. More glaringly, the "eggplant yogurt sauce" promised on the menu was nowhere to be found on that sandwich. Instead, it was full of goat cheese, which was just not a good substitute, and created all sorts of flavor clashes! The Shop- local ingredients with a decidedly non-local attitude. The Shop was a nice little find while debating on what to have for breakfast one morning. (I've been craving shrimp and grits since I arrived at ABQ and everywhere I've been the portioning hasn't been right.) The Shop is quite local, is in a nice locale, has friendly people working, a nice decor, and though the prices are on the mid to high end for breakfast. It can be worth it. My coffee, for the life of me I can't remember what I had, but it was delicious and well prepared. There play on shrimp and grits was decent. Although, the young waitress asked if I'd like hot sauce (Chalula, yes please, my favorite), but DON'T DO IT! In my opinion it was better without the addition of said hot sauce. All and all, The Shop is a legit breakfast spot. It's local, in an ideal location, has a nice setting, and more importantly good people. I've grown to love this place, It's come as you are, friendly little hipster dive. Breakfast or lunch, you're in good hands. The food is made with local ingredients and always sits well with me, because ingredients are always lite, fresh, and nourishing. Some of my favorites are the breakfast sandwich, and the cornmeal lemon blue berry pancakes. Ordered biscuits and gravy and to my surprise the plate was served with one egg instead of two, they tried to disguise the second egg with egg white from the one egg served. This was blatant, not an accident. I returned the plate once they admitted that one egg was served instead of two. We happened to be in Nob Hill, hunger pangs in tow, and decided to come by The Shop, per recommendation from a friend. I ordered the biscuits and chorizo gravy, which is topped with avocado and poached eggs. Very well made, biscuits were fluffy with just enough crumbling crunch, poached eggs cooked perfectly, and the gravy just the right consistency. My fiancé had the duck hash, which was also made well and delicious. The coffee was especially good, Panamanian I believe was the roast I had. With so many good restaurants in the area, I believe this is a solid choice, at least for breakfast. And, they use local ingredients, so that's cool. read more

My SO had been telling me about this place since we moved to ABQ. Since it next door to UNM he frequents it during the week. We finally got the chance to go for brunch one Saturday morning. Knowing it was dog friendly we also brought along our pup, Peter. The three of us sat outside and enjoyed the breeze while eating good food. I had the chorizo and egg torta and he had the chilaquiles. The torta was incredibly rich. I had a difficult time finishing it because of that but it was delicious. A friend recommended The Shop for brunch but warned to go early since they sometimes run out of stuff. Unfortunately, he was right and 4/5 people in my party had to modify their order. Kind of annoying but the staff were great about suggestions and substitutions. (I do wish they crossed off what they were out of on the board to make it easier to order) The food we did get was pretty amazing. Lots of flavor and good presentation. I'm pretty stingy with the five stars, but this place has earned it! It's a laid back breakfast and lunch eatery with an eclectic menu. Make sure to browse through the menus at the ordering bar since the chalkboard menu is a bit bare bones. The food is fantastic! Came here for breakfast. The bread was great, but we waited 30 minutes for food that doesn't take long to make. My Croque Madame was delicious, but my husband's bacon was burnt and his eggs and potatoes were not seasoned. It was also very warm in there. Two ceiling fans going. read more

Great little hipster place located in Nob Hill. Only had a few minutes before meeting friends at the theater, so I ordered the huevos rancheros. They were excellent despite having run out of black beans. The double potatoes were excellent despite blowing my carb allotment. The over easy eggs were cooked perfectly and everything was complimented by the excellent red chile sauce. I will definitely return. read more

This is one of my absolute favorite places for breakfast and brunch. It's a smaller restaurant by the UNM main campus, right in the Triangle shopping area. My boyfriend and I ordered the Eggs Benny and Duck Confit sandwich, and neither of us were disappointed. The food was incredible, and came out promptly after we placed our order. My only concern is with how sanitary the water is, because it is self-serve from a pitcher sitting on the counter by the register front. A little funky place with local art and a somewhat worn look and I gave it a 4 star because it seems that most the seats in the booths are torn up and sitting in there with shorts on in the summer was uncomfortable! I first was invited to the Shop a few years ago and was taken by the combination of artwork, inventive menu, good coffee, and no nonsense vibe that, taken together, I can only characterize as bistro-dive. It took us a while to try the place out but once we did, the Shop immediately made it into the regular rotation of breakfast/brunch places for my wife and I. They have a good selection of breakfast items with some standard items like the Americana, some items with a bit of a twist to a classic such as the biscuits and chorizo gravy, and some fairly unique items such as the duck hash. We have tried a good portion of the menu including the items named above as well as some others and we have generally have really enjoyed our meals. In particular I thought the duck hash was delicious. The biscuits and chorizo gravy is good as well but the gravy was a bit over-salted when I had it. Most recently I had the chorizo & egg torta which was very good. Some of the breakfast items come with a side salad which is tasty and I find to be a nice alternative to the typical side of potatoes that most places default to. They also do a good cup of coffee. Each time we have been there they have given the option between two different roasts which have some very distinct differences which is nice. I usually try a cup of each roast that they have available and I have been pleased with the coffees that I have tried. The Shop is a nice local joint, with some good food and coffee for breakfast. I would definitely suggest given it a shot. read more

The Carrot pancakes are filling, not to sweet, but you can add as much maple syrup and cream cheese icing as desired. The look of the place from the street may turn some off, but inside you are welcomed but delicious smells and an intriguing menu. You better come early though as they sell out quickly on their popular items! My college age kids tried the Cuban sandwich and the duck hash. Both very good.
