To my surprise they were open and ready to take my order on a Monday afternoon. Too many businesses have reduced business hours since the pandemic, so this was a welcomed surprise. Decided to visit this place while visiting Chicago. I live in Houston so I love a good BBQ. Although this isn't a dine in restaurant, the decor was decent. What wasn't, was the customer service. Deplorable would be an understatement. The staff was very loud and inattentive. I had to wait for the cashier to finish his conversation to even be addressed. He gave me a can of soda with no straw and when I asked for one, he could not even hear me over the jabbering of the other staff. To make matters worse, on my way out, I asked for ketchup and hot sauce ( I'm staying in a hotel) And I was told, " we don't sell ketchup or hot sauce". For all the lack of service, I assumed that at least the food would be on point. I was wrong. My wings, fries and tips were drenched in awful tasting bbq sauce. U literally could not tell the difference in taste of any three items. I spent a whopping $17 for a meal I was barely able to eat a quarter of. I've tried this place a few times and have never had a good meal. Each time I've ordered the The St. Louis ribs and each time they have been dry, overcooked, and tough. Could it be that they go in the microwave? I don't know. I've always ordered online, so maybe you have to show up in person, place your order and wait in order to get good ribs? I don't know. Also, I've never tried any of the other meats, so I can't speak to them. Normally I go for lunch I decided to go for dinner. The cashier with the black rim glasses was very unprofessional. I always prefer center cut pieces she said they don't do that, now when I go for lunch it's an extra $4 that's fine, she ended up charging me $2 those pieces were so thin with a ton of fries on top I couldn't even get to the meat. The place is next door to my hair salon & I dropped in for lunch. The prices! Whew chile. Lord the prices are OUTRAGEOUS! I ordered a tip & link combo with mild sauce. It took maybe 10mins to get my order. I ate it in my car and my food was hot, and packaged well. Looks like a decent portion, but not decent enough for it to have been $15. I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE THIS PLACE... PASS! 1st Impressions are IMPORTANT! So let me preface this with this, my favorite BBQ places right now locally are LEM's (southside) and SMOQUE (northside), Big Ed's BBQ (Waukegan). All of the aforementioned are distinctively different styles, yet CONSISTENTLY wonderful. 1.) So let's cut to the chase, ordered a LARGE tip (small, large and jumbo), the ribs tasted like they were boiled first and only had a hint of smoky flavor on them inspite of them in the pit, for whatever reason. 2.) The handcut fries, personally, handcut fries are good, but I personally don't think it works as a "bed" for the bbq. Otherwise, they were pretty basic, can't really mess up handcut fries. 3.) The sauce - Sauce was delicious 4.) Meat getting cut - So, they had a really tall young man working with these special weird looking eye glasses, I'm just going to go out on a limb and assume he's probably related to the owner(s), but regardless, couldn't cut meat. The tips were not EVEN and in my humble opinion, for a LARGE tip, I should've gotten MORE meat. There was more FRIES on my basket then actual MEAT! The tips weren't cut evenly. At any rate. the presentation was not the best. Final Thoughts: It was midday, about 1PM during the weekday and there was a line, in spite of about 5-6 people in the back. I believe they need to take the time to invest in PREPARATION. I watched 2-3 people walk away after a tall older man in a baseball cap tell people that they're out of st louis style ribs and that the wait would be another 45-60 minutes. I watched a postal worker walkout angrily after it took 60 minutes for her food to get ready. That is unacceptable. I think this place has a lot of potential, but they're not reaching high enough. I'll share my thoughts as to the contrasting differences of my prefaced preferred restaurants and why they remain superior. In short, CONSISTENCY...Anytime I walk into LEM's which has a much smaller waiting area, I've NEVER waited more than 10 minutes for food, any food, PERIOD! No matter what day or time. NEVER. The FLAVOR of their ribs (small end, large end, tips, links, etc. ALL taste FULL of flavor, the ribs really don't need any sauce, but the sauce makes it better! They're also VERY liberal with their portions and sauce. They also cut their tips relatively evenly, same with their slabs. There's also only SMALL and LARGE tip, no 3-4 different options. BOTH are plentiful. I ordered a LARGE tip and didn't feel like I had enough. A small tip for LEM's is practically an entire slab, a Large is TWO! The meat literally falling off and over the tray basket. Smoque and Big Ed's, basically competition level smoked meat that's delivered at a fast pace with an assembly line type of order! I believe their consistency in service and food delivery also is synonymous with their food quality in regards to taste as well as their side items. I spoke with a young lady while waiting in line at SLAB who seems to be a repeat customer regarding their sides, which she said were pretty mediocre. This was disappointing. Bottom line, I think this place has a chance but they got to get a system down and get their consistency up. I'll be back in a few months, hopefully, things will change. However, if you're reading this and you're on the fence and you don't want to take a $15 chance on a large tip like I did, just go to LEM's. read more

I heard about Slabs on the news, so I decided to check them out. When I got there the place was packed, which I figured was indicative of good food. I ordered a full slab, rib tip and link combo, potato salad, cole slaw and baked beans. I got there at 5:30 and didn't get my food until 7pm. I'm all about good food but customer service is import ant as well. After waiting about 50 minutes the young lady came out and asked me what did I order. I told her what my order was and she said it was going to be another 15 minutes. Needless to say it was another 40. Once I got home and opened the bag my order was wrong. Instead of the ribtip and hotlink combo they gave me the ribtips and chicken combo. The food was ok but not worth an hour and a half wait! I hope that they put more effort into customer service. This is my go to place for ribs. Tender and juicy and seasoned just right for me. I always ask for sauce on side as I like my own sauce. Fries are great as are greens. I haven't tried other sides. Service is excellent. I had a problem once and they made it right. Things happen, but if restaurant makes it right, I'll go baCk. I think it's only fair to bring it to management's attention rather than go off and badmouth place. One problem is getting them on phone during busy periods. read more

Food tastes really good. They have some Kinks to work out. I placed a phone order that no one could find when I got there, but I didn't have to wait long for the order to be made. Told my friend about it the next day and she called to order. They said they don't take phone orders but they'll do delivery for $5. Called back twice to place an order for delivery and they never answered the phone. There are a few places in the area with good food and bad customer service. I got a large end without sauce. Nice portion of well seasoned, meaty ribs. Great smoke ring, tender, juicy and clinging to the bone. Slab BBQ offers pork, turkey and beef hot links. I got the pork. It was ok, flavorful and not too spicy. I also ordered rib tips with sauce. Tips are cooked well and consistently cut. Sauce is a smokey tomato base and a bit on the sweet side. It pains me to have to write this review as our community and nation grapple with the coronavirus pandemic. Last night I made an order that included one order of ribs, one hamburger, one small spaghetti, and one small mac and cheese. The total came to about $50+, which was expensive. This is not the first time I've ordered from The Slab and this is not the first time I felt their prices were excessive, but this is the first time I am compelled enough to share my thoughts about this place on Yelp. Despite my lukewarm feeling toward this place, based on past experience, I continued with the order for two reasons, one was because I wanted to offer my household something different to enjoy that I could not prepare at home. Since I don't own a smoker, obviously BBQ was an option. The second reason I ordered, specifically from The Slab is that it is reportedly an African American-owned restaurant. With so many restaurants going belly up, I know the impact this economic crisis will have on black-owned businesses, especially those in the foodservice industry. Lastly, I wanted to do my part by supporting the economy by supporting businesses that are able to stay open during our Shelter In Place order from Illinois government. Now to the issues: 1) The prices are too high for the portion sizes; 2) food preparation varies each time; 3) and the food was nasty. I ordered a medium hamburger with minimum condiments. I WRONGLY assumed that since this was a BBQ place that the burger would at least be smoked or have some sort of cue taste. I also WRONGLY assumed that a $9 hamburger would include fries or some sort of side, like most restaurants. I was wrong. The burger, which was a good quarter pounder, was not the correct temperature, had no seasoning on it (not even salt and pepper), no smoked flavor, meaning it tasted as if it was cooked on a flat top grill; had MINIMSCULE condiments as a topper (my family member only wanted mayo, onions, mustard, and peppers, thinking BBQ sauce would either be on the burger or on the side); and it came with nothing else! It was nasty as hell. We had to scrape off the tiny bit of onion (think the size you'd put on a hamburger for someone living in the fictional land of Lilliput), and the two toothpicks full of condiment and season the burger ourselves and then microwave it to get it properly cooked. The $15 ribs were tougher than leather on cowboy boots. The six pieces (pre-sliced by them!!!) had ample BBQ sauce and a smattering of fries. If you have been to the famous Lem's then think of the Slab's portion size as almost half. But again, I didn't complain previously (though I was disappointed) because I'm trying to show my support. And, to be fair, I have only ordered from that place three times since it opened--with this being the third. I figured you have to get people a chance to get up and running, to get feedback from customers, and to make adjustments. Since the last time I ordered, apparently, they've adjusted to making half cooked and have decided to stick to (and possibly reduce!) portion size. The sides were OK (though the mac had no seasoning), still I wished I had just ordered ONLY them--because they were edible. But as I thought while ticked off about being ripped off of HALF-A HUNDRED (when I honestly could have spent it better elsewhere), that made me even angrier. Who would go to a BBQ shop just to order sides? And, if that's all customers order then that's another problem. I gave a thumbs down on Uber Eats and then attempted to protest the price and quality of only one item (the burger). I felt it was not clear on their menu that this high priced item did not include BBQ sauce nor fries, nor was it prepared in the smoker, or with their signature BBQ seasoning (which apparently they don't have). As I quickly balanced out this horrible meal by preparing homecooked items to supplement what our household needed for dinner I really thought about reporting to the IL Attorney General. Yes, I was that angry. A $10 burger with no fries from a hole in the wall on the city's South Side felt like price gouging. I felt taken advantage of. I also felt helpless because during this crisis Uber Eats only offers customers limited options for a refund--and ineptly prepared, bad tasting and bad portion sizes and misleading advertising wasn't one of them. Slab owners: I was so happy when I first heard a barbecue joint was opening up in this part of South Shore that has few options. I also knew it came as the community grapples with gentrification and sweeping changes that started well before the COVID-19 pandemic. But, you should show some sort of love to your neighbors. I get you to want those "gentrification prices" in order to take care of the new South Shore. But in a time like this, could you have thrown in some damn fries? I will not eat there again. However, I hope they grow and learn, we need more not less black-owned firms. I'm still rooting for them! Stay safe everyone! read more
