Heading north back home to Virginia, husband says, I want some good NC BBQ. So, here I go on Yelp and find The Smoke Pit. Start reading off the menu, and see, burnt ends... then the Alabama White Sauce... then the sweet potato casserole... ok, let's try it. I got the pulled pork platter with two sides, he got a pulled pork sandwich. We were not disappointed! Taste preference, I like a little more bite to my potato salad, but, that was still good. I had never had red slaw before, and I am picky about cole slaw. It was delicious! Love the vinegar, and the crunchy cabbage! And the pork was wonderful! Didn't need sauce, but, of course I had to try a couple flavors anyway. And let's discuss portion size! I had to wave the white flag, or I would have just kept eating. His sandwich was HUGE! Tender pork falling off it. He agreed with me on the potato salad, but, again, taste preference. Then we split a banana pudding, and after paying a very reasonable amount for what we got, slowly made our way back to our vehicle to head home with full stomachs. One of the best meals I've had out in a long time... the best sweet tea, the BBQ salad to die for, the dressing, sides (Mac and cheese omg!, and potato salad almost a good as mine ). There was a 1 star review from about a month ago that should be removed. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that guy must have had an axe to grind. I've eaten bbq in just about every region of the country that claims to have good bbq, & this place was top notch! Now granted, I didn't have the ribs, but based upon how tastey the brisket, smoked sausage & pulled pork were, I can't imagine the ribs are anything but delicious. The sweet potato casserole was like eating dessert! Good bbq sauces rounded out the meal, but you didn't need them at all! Thank you for a great meal and friendly, fast service! Loved this food. Went here for lunch. Very busy and tons of room . The brisket was fantastic and so much food! Definitely a keeper.

Today I can finally say , "Goodbye ",to this restaurant. Whenever we travel thru this area we have to stop here. .. hubby's favorite. I always thought it was over cooked and much to heavy, well speaking of HEAVY, while dining today a shift manager went nuts and fired an employee. HOLY COW! This bbq was unbelievable!! We were driving back to Va and craving bbq, found this place and so happy we stopped! Being our first time here, we did not know what to decide but our waitress Sherri was amazing!! She gave a sample of the bbq which helped us decide!! GONE DOWNHILL! Increased prices. Took away all the good sides. Less food. I have recommended this restaurant to countless people and those days are long gone! You used to get so much food and now it's scraps. Only 1 side now and they took away sweet potato tots and okra. Hate to say this but will be calling my friends and telling them about how it has gone downhill and how terrible the new menu is! We love this place and always take our out of town guests here. Its not NC bbq! Its great stuff especially the brisket. We ask for the fatty slices, seems to be juicier. I would give it 5 stars but the beer choices aren't great. The hash brown casserole when available is great as well as baked beans. They changed vendors on the French fries and they aren't as good as they use to be. read more

This is the best barbecue in the area. The staff is so friendly which makes the whole experience awesome. If you order a two meat combo I'll bet that you will have two meals from it. Great selection of sides as well. I didn't expect the wings to be so good. read more

Of the many local places downtown Salisbury has to choose from to fill your belly, the Smoke Pit is in my top 3! Never ever had a bad meal. During peak hours there is normally a full Resturant with quite a waiting list but that only means that we love it! read more

My best friend was in the area and we decided to meet here for lunch/dinner. Neither of us have ever been and it was in the middle meeting spot. Service was great but food was okay. The sweet potato tots were soggy/greasy and my medium rare burger was well done, dry and crumbly. read more

This place has very good food. Really good. Fast, friendly service. I sat at the bar during lunch because I was by myself. One problem. They have a clogged or backed up drain behind the bar somewhere that was emitting a very foul odor. I mentioned to my waitress (who was super nice and attentive) and she said that she could smell it too and that she would mention it to the manager. I worked as a bartender for about 10 years. I remember the smell very well. It did make enjoying my lunch a little difficult. I hope they get that situation resolved. read more

We fell in love with the Concord location, but driving to Concord is a big hassle. We were ecstatic when they opened a location in Salisbury. However, the quality in Salisbury is not consistent. I ordered wings today and they were not cooked all they way through. I told the server and he tried to educate me on smoked meats. Wrong! I am a seasoned cook. I know what smoked meat looks like and I know what raw chicken feels like. The chicken was raw. Maybe I got the one piece that didn't get cooked, but I was not about to risk it. He was nice about it though and offered up a replacement meat for me, which was fine. The sweet tea is never good and the water is not filtered (yum, city water). The wait staff tries hard to keep up and for the most part they are at least friendly. I just wish the quality was on level as the Concord restaurant. read more

Finally made it to the Smoke Pit. Seated quickly and ordered a couple of drinks, a very nice waitress told us they were sold out of a couple of items but no worries there. Ordered the Bbq chicken tacos with the Texas caviar. Extremely good smoked chicken flavor that wasn't over done. Portions were large and I ended up taking one of the tacos home. I would recommend this place for a great meal and something on the menu will surely please everyone !! Bottom line is great food , large portions and a decent price ! I will return again. read more

Stopped here after NC train museum / wife had Texas brisket and I had 2 taco plate , everything and I mean everything was great even the chips and salsa !!! Food is not worth the price. Brisket was dry, fried pickles were so salty they were almost inedible, pulled chicken sandwich was drenched in, too-sweet sauce ruining the only moist meat we were given. Waitress was terrible. Never asked how we were doing, never asked if we needed a box or if we wanted dessert. She didn't give a damn what we needed. It seemed to us she just wanted us to eat and get out. We did one better--we barely ate any of it and left! We'll never return either! read more

We stopped here while driving thru town. We really enjoyed it. The food was awesome, best ribs we have had in a while and excellent burnt ends. You must get the beans and cornbread, yum. Excellent. Epic BBQ. You NEED to eat here. I'm from out of town and was looking for a good hometown restaurant. The clerk at the hotel just kept offering chain joints--no thanks. Saw this place and noticed it got really good scores. So here's another good review. Food was fanatic. Service was friendly and prompt. Dining room was very clean. I got the burnt tips platter with two sides. Believe me the small portion was huge and I'd hate to see what comes with a medium or large platter. It's located in the downtown area so parking was a little bit of a challenge for this out-of-towner. I found a lot behind the place but it was marked for permits only. But don't let parking discourage you. This place is worth the walk. Delicious. I'm marking it down for a return visit when I'm in the area again. read more

Can't really comment on the food, just the lack of service. My family went here to celebrate my wife's grandfather's 75th birthday , when we arrived there was a short waiting list to get a table , we had 6 people . As we waited for our name to be called we noticed another group of people came in and added their name to the list . About 15 minutes later the group that came in AFTER us were being seated, my mother in law went over to the hostess and asked about our table, the hostess told her that she didn't see our name on the list, then she turned back one page and saw our name was actually there and we should have been seated ahead of the other group. The only thing that happened was , we were told it would be another 30-40 minutes before they could seat us. So I can't really comment on the quality of the food, but the lack of service was enough for me to never go here read more

Hmm I was not happy with the food...I ordered a brisket platter..mac and cheese was decent.collards taste like they dumped cayenne pepper n crushed red pepper flakes and that's it.now the brisket was sooo SALTY UNEDIBLE I asked why it was so salty...waiter said those are the burnt ends...I told her I did not request that..she stated tht is all we had left...she did not offer me anything else.so I brought it home and gave it to my dog.20 bucks what a waste... read more

I've had food from here twice. The first time the order was to-go and beyond delicious. I ordered the four -bone rack of ribs, mac-n-cheese, greens, and cornbread. The portions were generous and on par with the price. Fast forward to our dine-in experience today, approx three weeks later. It was hard for me to believe this was the same restraunt. I ordered the same meal with the addition of fries for my daughter. The ribs were so tough that I could barely chew them, the greens had way too much hot pepper, the mac-n-cheese tasted refrigerated and reheated and the cornbread was cold. To be fair, the waitress, who was pleasant enough, did replace the ribs, but the next rack wasn't much better. There was so much fat that I could barely find the meat and I could barely taste the seasoning. I had to add sauce to make it edible. I finally gave up after my stomach started hurting. Today's meal was so terrible that I'm not sure there will be a third chance. read more

This is some seriously good bbq. I'm in town on business and wandered in for dinner and couldn't be more pleased. The pulled pork was outstanding, local beers are great with good variety. Our waiter Chase was very friendly making great suggestions and bringing samples. This place will definitely be a permanent stop on any trips through town. read more
