Cluckin good, broccoli and kale side
    Rebecca R.

Color me impressed. What a cute spot. I sat at the bar for a quick dinner and, with the help of the employee, settled on the "cluckin' good." I had a side of steamed broccoli and kale with my indulgent sandwich. The greens were cooked perfectly, which I know sounds simple, but I so often get served limp greens that've lost their color. Now on to the sandwich... Omg. The flavors and textures were so good. I loved how crispy and crunchy the chickn was. The onion jam gave the perfect sweet balance, and the aioli tang rounded everything out. I would absolutely come back. Thank you for a great introduction to Asheville!

    Trashy Burger (GF bun) Fries

Service and ambiance was successful. I got the Trashy Burger (consisting of vegan cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and thousand island dressing on a GF bun) with fries and a slice of strawberry cashew cheesecake. The burger was cooked well, the flavors were classic and balanced, and the bun was well-warmed, albeit a little crumbly. The fries had a good crisp and amount of salt, and the cheesecake had a decent strawberry flavor to it. Overall, this is how to get a vegan meal.

Took the family to enjoy lunch. We chose The Smokin' Onion because of their vegan/vegetarian options. There were five of us so we took our time choosing which items to eat. The staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant was clean and comfortable. Two of us enjoyed the chicken and waffles; two had the French toast and the last enjoyed the chimichanga. Everything was delicious. We enjoyed the meal and would recommend it to everyone.

The Smokin' Onion is definitely a hidden gem; so good. Great food, great location, friendly staff, very chill spot. Definitely recommend checking out The Smokin' Onion for sure!

I'm a vegetarian and would prefer that dairy options were available, but in Asheville, strict veganism is pretty common, and certainly preferable to other spots where, sadly, meatless options are afterthoughts at best. Didn't get pics of all our orders - others in my party were rude and dug in quickly. The fries were very good. The ketchup tasted a little wrong but the aioli was nice. The standout here was the Cluckin' Good sandwich, which I upgraded for $1 to feature the Asheville hot chick'n patty. My oh my, the CRUNCH y'all! So stinkin' good. Wow. Service was a bit slow but I'm forgiving that because all the staff were super-cool and mega-friendly. Ambience was fun and eclectic. The dining area seemed clean. Will def be back.

    Bodhi Bowl
    Marlene K.

Came for breakfast and chose the Bodhi Bowl which consisted of kale, roasted potatoes, black beans, broccoli, avocado and a couple of sauces. Some of the kale was roasted, which was a nice touch. After my first bite, it seemed a bit salty, but I soldiered on. After awhile, all I could taste was salt from the sauces, to the salty beans to the potatoes. Someone was pretty heavy handed with the salt. I'm not sure if this was a one time thing or not, but since it was my only meal, it's what I have to judge it by. If I were in town again, I might give it another try. The staff was friendly and engaging and the space is decorated really cute.

This was a great find as we drove through Asheville - a city known for its vegan scene. Sandwiches were generously portioned for the price, atmosphere was warm and inviting. French fries served with grilled onions were perfection! My only complaint is that the meal was so big I didn't have room for one of their yummy deserts. A bit off the beaten path but well worth the detour!

Reviewing the food only, I nonetheless feel compelled to point out that the political signaling I was greeted with upon entering was disturbing and out of touch with reality. The Asheville area is dynamic, but it contains all sorts of extremes. Fortunately for them, the country (and me) are more tolerant than whoever owns this place. The menu promises to render a very vegetarian-unfriendly Southern cuisine in entirely vegan form. Based on the breakfast platter that I ordered, mission accomplished. A resplendent variety of deliciously breaded tofu, grits and bread, and fruits and vegetables represented a balanced meal with an excellent variety of flavors. I still might consider spending my money elsewhere.

Vegetarian chimichanga (front) and town gyro made with seitan, with a side of hand cut fried (rear)

This review is for The Smokin' Onion restaurant (they also have a food truck). It's a cute little place tucked away in the back of the same West Asheville strip shopping center as Botiwalla. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. There are only a few tables, but probably enough unless they are super busy. The staff was very friendly and efficient. The food was some of the best vegetarian food I've ever had -- so flavorful! The portions are large. Prices are reasonable. The chimichanga was so big there was enough left for another lunch. The outside was fried to perfection and the inside was stuffed full of rice and sweet potatoes. It was served over black beans with avocado slices, lettuce, pickled onions and sour cream. The Chipotle Baja sauce drizzled on top was also very tasty. The Town Gyro used seitan in place of meat, but you wouldn't know the difference. It was well seasoned and had a nice texture. It was served on a fresh pita with mixed greens, cucumber, tomatoes, diced onions and their own tzatziki sauce, which was better than some Greek/Middle Eastern restaurants. We got an order of their hand cut fries to go with it and they were fabulous. We'll definitely go back and will also try the food truck (which has a more limited menu) when we see it at one of the local breweries.

When you are having one of those days where you just wish you could go grab some comfort food, it's always a little difficult for vegan folks. Smokin' Onion is the perfect spot for this. They have a pretty varied menu with a bunch of delicious comforting meals (some healthy options too!). The folks who run this place are kind and I love that it's counter service. In the former home of the beloved Trashy Vegan, I'm glad that the cozy, vegan vibes still remain. Thanks for being here Smokin' Onion!

Had the food truck at Whistle Hop! We got the fries and nachos, and both were so so so good. Very quick, too! It was all we smelled when we got out the car in Whistle Hop's parking lot and we knew we had to try it out

A visiting vegan introduced me to this fabulous lunch spot! The smoking onion served delicious lunch, entrées that were truly out of this world! I now know where I will bring my next vegan friend...

My takeout was ready on time. While the falafel roll still might have been better fresh, I wanted something that I could plausibly eat several hours later on a mountain without a ton of restaurants nearby, and that choice worked out well. Many falafel rolls come with add-ons that I don't like, but the pickled turnip offering here was both flavorful and colorful. I also got their fries, drizzles with tahini and parsley, which is a good way to eat fries. A case of baked goods and a small market section of canned items were also available. There was certainly space to eat inside or out for someone without my travel schedule. It's also notable that in addition to the usual falafel, they offer ample vegan options as befits the Asheville community, including a house seitan and some other vegetable and fake meat options. I was happy with what I got, but the choice is always appreciated.

Overall, this is where to go if you've got a seriously empty stomach and are craving Middle Eastern cuisine.

Given the…read morecomplementary relationship with the many craft breweries that don't do food themselves, plus all the local outdoor events for 9 months of the year, there are some truly great food trucks based here. Cassia is definitely one of the top ones. This is some of the best and most original Thai food I've ever had. They are a regular at Cellarest Beer Project in West Asheville. The food is prepared fresh, but the wait is not too long. And if you sit in the right spot, you may be able to enjoy the fragrant scent of Thai food as it is being prepared in their mobile kitchen. We started with the Firecracker sweet potatoes. These amazing little jewels are mashed sweet potatoes wrapped in the same coating as you'd normally have with a spring roll or won ton. They had a wonderful crispy outside with a flavorful sweet potato mash inside. The spicy mayo dipping sauce was excellent, but we also loved dipping these into the golden curry sauce that came with our curry duck. Where do you ever see curry duck BTW? The duck was cooked perfectly and not at all grisly or chewy. The curry sauce was absolutely incredible. Great flavor along with a nice kick. Between eating the duck and jasmine rice with the curry sauce and dipping some of the Firecrackers in it, there was literally not a speck of curry sauce left behind. We also had chicken Laab Gai. The mint leaves in this were really tasty and not overwhelmingly minty. The sticky rice was good. These came with cabbage leaves that you can roll the meat and rice up in to create a sort of Thai taco. This was good, but not at the same level as the duck curry. Maybe a bit more sauce would help. Prices are restaurant level but well worth it given this is restaurant-quality food or better. We paired the food with two fine beers from Cellarest. The Czech-style Moonglade Tmave pivo had great character. The Weald Oktoberfest Marzen lager was also excellent. Both went very well with the Thai food. Apart from maybe the dead of winter, this will be a place we go back to for more great Thai food.

I had heard of it from Doc Brown, of Doc Brown's BBQ food truck fame. He spent much time describing just how amazing this little taco truck in front of the Dollar General super market was. After working a wedding, I just happened to drive by the place and decided to stop in. There's a hand written menu outside of the little trailer, a couple of chairs, and an umbrella to keep you shaded while you order and eat. I decided on 3 tacos, al pastor, carne asada, and lengua (sup, I like tongue). At $2 a pop the price is right! They had a couple of other items as well, including a spiced pork in flour tortilla and something that sounded a lot like a mexican huarache, but was different and called a tlacoyo.... which I'm not even going to try to pronounce. My order was taken by what I assume was the mother of the family that operates this lovely little spot. My tacos were up super quickly. I can't say for certain... but I think that the tortillas are hand made. Either there, or somewhere close by. They were ultra fresh, and had that slightly imperfect edge. The tacos were served with roasted onion, grilled napoles, and their red and green hot sauces, which both packed a spicy punch. The carne asada was pretty good. Not the explosion of awesome I was hoping for... I was anxious. I wanted this place to kick ass. Looking at my other two tacos I was hesitant to try them. What if they weren't as good as I was hoping for? I bit into the lengua taco and my fears subsided. This is fucking great I thought to myself. Thank goodness. I consumed it with voracious zeal. The Al Pastor was next and the best of the three. The PERFECT balance of spices, carmelization, and just a hint of pineapple. Wow. For 6 bucks this might be the best deal in town. The hours are a bit whacky, I was told they're open Thursday - Sunday from 6 til 11. I'm going to make it a point to be a regular here.
